VS.NET Debug Website Gives Connection Error To SQL Database
Dec 28, 2006
Hi all,
I've got a little problem.
I'm working on a ASP.NET project. The applications has 4-layers. When I look in the Data Access Layer and test the typed dataset, then the "Preview Data" works fine. I see the right records from SQL Server 2005.
But when I run the app (default.aspx) in debug-mode, then the system gives the following error:
"An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)"
Please help.....

In trying to upgrade my sql express install from express to developer edition, I ended up having to delete all things express from my computer and do a clean install of developer edition (as i installed developer edition initially over sql express but this didnt seem to work; express edition still appeared in add remove programs etc). Anyway so i blew away the install and have a clean install of developer edition. Now when I create a new website in Visual Studio 2005 and try to add a database to the project, it gives me an error stating that i need to have sql server express 2005 installed to function properly... Do i need to have express AND developer edition of sql installed to do this? I would think developer edition of sql would enable me this functionality...http://img277.imageshack.us/img277/4228/sqlerrorie2.jpgThanks!It is also worth noting that I get the dreaded remote connection error when trying to connect to a db that I used to be able to connect to when I was using sql express (the aspnetdb database that is created when you user their membership stuff)"An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. I have an exception occur when the "open" method is called on the connection object. Although I have this within a try/catch block, it doesn't get caught by the SqlException block and instead only gets caught by the "catch all" exception block at the bottom. I know that method is causing the problem because I set the text of an asp:label element at several places in the script to find out where the exception is being thrown. Shouldn't this be caught by the SqlException block.
Does anyone have any ideas why this might not be getting caught?
Thanks for any thoughts.

I have had a local Website up and running based on the MS Personal Website Starter Kit using Visual Studio 2005 Professional and SQL Server Express.
I am now trying to get the databases to run on SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition but can't get the connection to work.
I have changed the connection string in the Web.Config file from:
connectionString="Data Source=.SQLExpress;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True;AttachDBFilename=|DataDirectory|Personal.mdf" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"
To
connectionString="Data Source=.scastle;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True;AttachDBFilename=|DataDirectory|Personal.mdf" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"
But am getting the following error:

Line 9: End If
I am able to connect OK in both Server Management Studio (Server Name: SCastle, Windons Authentication) and clicking Connect to Database in Server Manager in Visual Studio (Server Name: (local)).
Have I got the connection string wrong or do I need to set up additional permissions in the database?
Thanks for your help.

I am getting the error message below when trying to connect to SQL Server 2000. Here are the details:
Problem is occuring with a new website trying to connect to SQL Server. The error occurs right at the open statement.
Using SQL Server 2000
Web server is on a different machine than SQL Server
I have many websites connecting to this SQL Server. Websites are all on the same webserver.
I can connect to this SQL Server using the Query Analyzer using the same ID and PW as in my connection string
My web application runs OK using this SQL Server when I run it from my laptop - just changed the connection string Initial Catalog parameter.
Any help would be appreciated.

I have followed the instructions for SSIS Lesson 1 exactly but i get these 4 errors when I come to debug at the "Lookup Date Key" lookup transformation. Last step in the lesson.
1. [Lookup Date Key [66]] Error: Row yielded no match during lookup.
2. [Lookup Date Key [66]] Error: The "component "Lookup Date Key" (66)" failed because error code 0xC020901E occurred, and the error row disposition on "output "Lookup Output" (68)" specifies failure on error. An error occurred on the specified object of the specified component.
3. [DTS.Pipeline] Error: The ProcessInput method on component "Lookup Date Key" (66) failed with error code 0xC0209029. The identified component returned an error from the ProcessInput method. The error is specific to the component, but the error is fatal and will cause the Data Flow task to stop running.
4. [DTS.Pipeline] Error: Thread "WorkThread0" has exited with error code 0xC0209029.
I have tried this on 2 hardware setups and recreated the package several times on both. The only thing i can think of is that the collations on both servers is SQL_Latin1_CP1_CI_AS and British English (I have huge legacy databases from SQL 7.0 and cannot get my tech support to change language settings of server to UK English). Is it possible that this is causing the lookup failure mentioned above (Q1)? How can I change the collation/language settings within the DTS so that the text file matches the AdventureWorksDW database settings if this is the issue (Q2)?
Are the error codes listed anywhere and if not can they be added BOL (Q3)? I have read other threads and they suggest 0xC0209029 means lookup failed due to differing lengths. Can dates have differing lengths (Q4)?

Hi !
I almost finish my website and ready to upload it to internet. However, I have a thought of how the database will work.
Here's the scenario. My website is a data-driven dynamic website with SQL as the database manager. I have 3 database files.
After I finish with everything, I will have to deploy the application
to the webserver right? Now, let say I deploy / upload it to a hosting
company. Then, people start using my website, all traffic coming in,
and database are getting larger and larger. Then, let say I decide to
make some changes to my website. I change the website here and there.
However, I haven't uploaded / deployed it to the hosting server yet. I
just make the changes in my computer. I test the application and
changes that I make, everything works fine.
My question is: If I deploy / upload my website to the SAME hosting
company after I make some changes, what will happen to the database in
the hosting server? My website has been used my many users and database
is getting larger. If I deploy ./ upload the website that I have made
changes, will it overwrite the database in the hosting server? Or how
does this work?
Anybody has any idea or maybe has already done it?
Any articles or thoughts will be appreciated!!!
thanks you sooo much in advanced!!!

My database contains over 50 tables of information - some tables are quite large. Rather than upload the entire database (which I imagine could potentially lock out many users from browsing the website), I would like to upload changes to individual tables. My local database contains the most recent table information. What would be the best way to upload individual tables that would only lock one row at a time while the updates were taking place? A DTS package?
Thanks.

The state 8 indicates bad password, but it isnt... because logging into sql server with that user and password works.

I intend to used SQL Express database in my website so that I don't have to go through all the database deployment effort when deplying my website.
In this regard, can anyone please tell me what features would it require in my hosting package so that my application works fine (in database context). Would I have to purchase any additional features (like the way we purchase SQL Server database(s) in hosting package) for SQL EXpress in order to deploy my application??

I found an article on the CodeProject website named T-SQL MapReduce. I'm trying to duplicate the SQL code there into a SQL Server 2914 Developer Edition database I've got, and also the C# code using Visual Studio. I've defined the user data types fine (e.g.: word_t, words_t and so on), but I got an error when I tried to create the UDF dbo.mapper from the page. The error I got was:
Msg 102, Level 15, State 1, Procedure mapper, Line 5
Incorrect syntax near 'CALLER'.
The SQL code I used is straight off of the page; it looks like this:
create function dbo.mapper(@documents DocumentsWithAutoIncrementIndexTable READONLY, @sep nvarchar)
returns @t TABLE ( wordindex int, word word_t )
WITH EXECUTE AS CALLER
What have I done wrong? I'm guessing that the author has done something like left off a variable declaration or something like that. what am I missing?

Hi,
I encounter few errors when I try to create a login page using tool in Microsoft Visual Studio 2005, please refer to below :
'-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I create a Login screen from Toolbox.
When I try to configure the setting for Provider Configuration in the ASP.NET Website Administration Tool using Select a single provider for all site management data or Select a different provider for each feature (advanced) options, the error ‘Could not establish a connection to the database’ appear.
I have tried to run aspnet_regsql to configure the server and database and return to this tool to configure the Provider configuration but the same error ‘Could not establish a connection to the database.’ appear.
When I click the Security Configuration link in ASP.NET Configuration, the error as shown below appear :
'There is a problem with your selected data store. This can be caused by an invalid server name or credentials, or by insufficient permission. It can also be caused by the role manager feature not being enabled. Click the below button to be redirected to a page where you can choose a new data store.
The following message may help in diagnosing the problem: An error has occured while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections.(provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)'
When I try to choose Data Store in the Security Configuration screen(Figure 4), the same error(‘Could not establish a connection to the database’) appear.
'----------------------------------------------------------------
I also have tried to configure the SQL Server Surface Area Configuration but the same error still appear….
Is there any other configuration I need to set before I can create this login page?
Any advices or help is much appreciate.

HiI’m abut developing a website that has a 200 megabytes SQL database ,in my estimation the maximum online users are 100 users for first year , I want to make shore a SQL express 2005 database in good enough for my purpose. Another question is how much can I count on a SQL express 2005 database? I mean how much it could be grown and abut security (I mean is it as secure as SQL server?). Thanks.

I don't know whether this question belong here, but....
In the past I had many customers using the same website each with their own domain name and their own database. To accomplish that, I used MS Access and placed each customers database in separate directories. I steered the customer to the correct directory using their domain name. I am now trying to accomplish the same thing using aspnetdb.mdf and other .mdf database files. I am using the aspnetdb.mdf database for membership, etc. I want the aspnetdb.mdf database file to be unique for each customer. Does anyone know how to accomplish what I was doing with MS Access using aspnetdb.mdf? Is there any way to have multiple web.config files each of which would be dedicated to a particular customer?
