SQL Server 2005 And Express Permissions Nightmare/Cannot Open Database ASPNETDB.MDF Requested By The Login

Apr 12, 2007

I just spent the better par of 3 days creating a prototype in ASP.Net 2.0 and SQL Server Express only to discover that nobody from outside can see it...
ERROR with impersonation=true
User does not have permission to perform this action.
ERROR with impersonation=false
Unable to open the physical file "c:inetpubwwwroot------.mdf". Operating system error 5: "5(Access is denied.)".An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file c:inetpubwwwroot-----.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share.
What makes this so difficult?
What am I missing?

Moved Aspnetdb To SQL Server - What Permissions Do I Need To Give The ASP IIS Service Account For That? (Getting: Cannot Open Database Aspnetdb Requested By The Login. The Login Failed.)

May 12, 2008

I am getting the error:
Cannot open database "aspnetdb" requested by the login. The login failed.
When I browse to my ASP.NET 3.5 LINQ web application on the IIS 6.0 server on Server 2003.
I imagine this is because while I granted SQL Server 2005 login and permissions to my database that the application stores its data in, I did NOT grant any rights to the service account the IIS Application Pool uses for its identity to the aspnetdb database on SQL Server which is where all my roles information is stored at.
My question is what are the MINIMUM permissions needed for this database so it can perform its roles related functions?
I'm using Windows Authentications with the SQL Role provider for authorization.

Thank you.

EDIT: I think I only need to open the aspnetdb database and add my login to the aspnet_Roles_FullAccess role.  Is that correct?

Problem With Creating New SQL Server Database In VWDExpress Using SQL Server 2005 Express

Jul 1, 2006

I have two problems on creating new SQL server database in Visual Web Developer 2005 Express using SQL server 2005 Express.

The 1st problem: (It is resolved)

After installed SQL Server 2005 express and Visual Web Developer 2005 Express. When I tried to create a SQL server database in VWD the following error occurred:

"connection to SQL Server files (*.mdf) require SQL server express 2005 to function properly. please verify the installation of the component or download from the URL: go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkId=49251"

I was stuck with this problem for few days. I did several times of install/reinstall of VWPExpress and SQL server Express, made very sure following proper de-installation sequence as specified in the release readme. But it did not resolve the problem.

Latter I found out that if I login with another Windows XP user account, I don't get the problem.

Changing the security authority of XP file systems and IIS didn't help.

And to prove that I was doing the installation correctly, I tried a new installation of the VWDExpress with SQL server 2005 express in another machine, it worked and I could create new empty SQL database.

After 2 days of frustrating changing of options, parameters, server names, messing with the registry etc.... Finally, I found a way to overcome this problem.

The solution is:

In Visual Web Developer 2005 Express, select:

Tools -> Options -> Database Tools -> Data Connections,

Change the setting: "SQL Server Instance Name (blank for default)" to "SQLEXPRESS". (where SQLEXPRESS is the default server instance name)

That solved this 1st problem.

I still don't know the exact reason for this problem. But I recalled I did installed the VWDExpress few weeks ago, I might have installed it without selecting SQL server 2005 express at that point. I guess the subsequent install/re-install did not clean up those junk in the registry.

I still have the 2nd problem:

The "Create new SQL database..." option is always grayed out when I right click on the Data connections in the "Database Explorer" tab.

I have a bypass for this difficulty for time being:

I have to do it by using the "Add connection....", put in the server name: "myserver/SQLEXPRESS" and a new database name.

Any input form anyone ? Appreciated!

MS SQL Server 2000, And ASP.NET 2.0 Membership Controls (login)

Dec 14, 2007

when my ASP.NET 2.0 web site working against MS SQL Server 2000,I Usually have a connection string to the DB, I create a connection, and start working on the data.
While reading about the MemberShip provider of ASP.NET 2.0 (Login control, Forgot password, etc.),I read that it's possible to save the MDF file of the membership controls, within the APP_DATA folder.
But how can it be ? the MDF file must be at the server folder,How can I access this MDF file ? with which connection string ?How does MS SQL Server 2000 syncronize against this MDF file within my APP_DATA folder ?
And by the way, if my hosting company allow me to use 1 db schema of the MS SQL Server 2000 server,Does this method (saving the MDF file within thr APP_DATA folder) allow me to use multiple schemas ?
Thanks.

Updating SQL Express With Bound Controls Problem.

Mar 20, 2008

I'm using VB.NET on VS 2005 with SQL 2005 Express. I have one master table with two child tables related with a FK. The master table in the SQL 2005 database has an Identity Column set up as the primary key with Increment as "1" and Seed as "1001". Each child table in the database has one Identity Column set as a primary key also with Increment = 1 Seed = 1001. Each child table also has a column set as a foreign key to the master primary key. The typed dataset was created in Designer and the table adapters, bindingsources, bindingnavigator and DGVs were created by dropping the tables on the form. I added some code for each child table in the bindingsource button save event for the two additional child tables:
' my added code
child1BindingSource.EndEdit
childT1ableAdapter.Update(ds.Child1Table)

child2BindingSource.EndEdit
child2TableAdapter.Update(ds.Child2Table)

Now the trouble. I changed the dataset (not the actual database) columns for each table's PK to AutoIncrement with Seed "-1" and Step "-1" to allow the client to create new records that do NOT match an existing key in the backend database. I've read on the forums where this is best pratice to prevent collisions. Please correct me if this is not true. When I create a new record by clicking the "+" button on the binding navigator, I see the "-1" inserted into the correct bound field for the primary key column of the parent table. I can then click into either or both the child DGV empty rows and see that same "-1" value appear in the correct FK column of the DGV. Everything looks good until I try and save the newly added rows were I get the "The INSERT statement conflicted with the FOREIGN KEY constraint "FK_Parent_Child" error. If I change the dataset back to Seed 1, Step 1 then it does not throw an error during save and does save the child data. However the value of the Primary key on the DGV cells displays the value "1001" (or the next auto incrementing value) and NOT "1" which is the seed value for that dataset's table's primary key column. I can change the Seed and Step back to "-1" on the dataset tables and get the error during save or change the dataset table primary key column to Seed 1, Step 1 and the data is saved but with an incorrect identity value. Why does it use the identity value from the database and not the dataset? It seems to me it should work the same no matter what I assign to the autonumber seed value.

I had previously posted this in the Windows Forms forum but with no solution.

Regards,

DeBug

SQL SERVER 2005 Express Login Problems

May 5, 2006

I have two applications added to a single solution. A Web application and a ClassLibrary which contains the Unit Tests. From the ClassLibrary I am trying to open the SQL SERVER 2005 Express Database. The database is in the App_Code directory of the Web Application folder. I have added the App.config file in my class library which has the following credentials. <connectionStrings>    <add name="ConnectionString" connectionString="Data Source=MYSERVER;Initial Catalog=MyDatabase;User Id=AZAMSHARP;Password=mypassword;"/>  </connectionStrings>Now, when I run the test:   [Test]        public void CanOpenDatabaseConnection()        {            string connectionString = ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["ConnectionString"].ConnectionString;            SqlConnection myConnection = new SqlConnection(connectionString);            myConnection.Open();            Assert.AreEqual(myConnection.State, ConnectionState.Open);            myConnection.Close();                 }It throws the Exception: ThingsTODOTestApps.SqlConnectionFixture.CanOpenDatabaseConnection : System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException : Login failed for user 'AZAMSHARP'. Reason: Not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection.I tried the same connectionString with the WebApps and it worked fine and displayed the results. Any ideas! PS: AZAMSHARP is my windows authentication account.

Porting VB 6 Data Controls To Use SqlDatasource Controls - Please Help!!!!

May 9, 2007

Hi,  I am porting a massive VB6 project to ASP.net 2005.  Most of the code is fine, however because the original developers used lots of data controls and my own time restrictions I thought to replicate the functionality by using Sqldatasource controls instead.
These data controls are bound to DBtruegrids.   The project has has lots of code like...
 AdodcOrders.Recordset.RecordCount > 0 or  If AdodcOrders.Recordset.EOF  or  AdodcOrders.Recordset.MoveNext()  or
AdodcDetail.Recordset!FieldName
The problem is the sqldatasource control doesn't have a recordset/dataset property which I can access and manipulate, or does it?  What should I do to get round these?  The project has thousands of lines like this in so its not feasible to rewrite it (although if I could I would!).
 Any suggestions please gratefully appreciated.
many thanks

Remote Connection To 2005 Express: Login Failed?

Feb 9, 2006

I followed the steps outlined in a blog I found to setup SS2005 express for remote connections. Everything appeared to go smooth until I actually tried to logon ;)

I have Sql Server 2005 Express installed on my WinXP PRO machine at home (no domain). I have opened the ports on the firewall, etc.

When I try and login from the SQLCMD command line tool I get a Login Failed error. Here is the connection string that I'm trying to use:
SQLCMD -S **.***.**.*SQLEXPRESS -U Steve -P MyPassword

The error:
Login failed for user 'Steve'.

When I use Management Studio Express on the same machine running Sql Server, it shows the User name: NEVERSTILLSteve

'NEVERSTILL' is the name of my computer.

If I try and use that same username with a remote connection I get the same error.

I have googled for the error and msg code, but nothing fitting my situation is coming up.

Anyone have any ideas for me?

I have SQLExpress and full SQL Server 2005 running on the server. I want to remove SQL Express from the server.
So can I simply do a backup of the SQL Express membership db and restore it to full SQL and change the connection string in my app or
do i need to run the membership wizard on full sql and then do the backup / restore?
Or is there another way.

Problem Inserting Data Into SQL Server 2005 DB From WebForm Controls

Mar 30, 2007

Hello all,
I am having problems running a stored proc from an aspx.cs file. Basically I want to extract data from webForm controls and create a new record in a DB table. I have watched the "Getting Started" videos on thi site, and the only difference between my code and the code of the demonstrator is the connection string.   My conn string:- dataSrc.ConnectionString = ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["ProjectTblConnString"].ConnectionString;Demonstrator conn string:- dataSrc.ConnectionString = ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings("ProjectTblConnString");When I debug with the string as shown by the demonstrator the error list reports that ConnectionStrings is a property and I am trying to use it as a mothod, which is fair enough, but I am just confused as how it worked for the demonstrator and not myself. When I debug with the code I used above I get no error, but nothing is inserted in the DB.Also, it looks as if the only class in my aspx.cs file that is actually being executed is PageLoad() - the remainder of the code seems to be ignored. Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Datamining Viewer Controls Feature Pack

Oct 24, 2006

Hi,

I downloaeded "Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Datamining Viewer Controls" feature pack, and tried to run the dataminingviewerclient.exe.

When i view my local time series data mining model, It works well for single series model, but when i load a Microsoft time series model containing multiple data series, an unhandled exception occurs.

I post the error message below:

See the end of this message for details on invoking
just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

************** JIT Debugging **************
To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this
application or computer (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
enabled.

For example:

<configuration>
<system.windows.forms jitDebugging="true" />
</configuration>

When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer
rather than be handled by this dialog box.

Can someone help to figure out what went wrong? thx.
