Error : Only Constants, Constant Expressions, Or Variables Allowed Here.

Jun 9, 2004

hi all,
when I try to do the following insert for the table test

create table test (outputs character(10), chk integer)

insert into test values('a',((select count(*) from test where outputs='a')+1))

I am getting the error
The name 'outputs' is illegal in this context. Only constants, constant expressions, or variables allowed here. Column names are illegal.

when i tried the same in DB2 it's working fine. is there anyerror in my syntax or this kind of function not allowed in SQL Server.

The Name 'HeaderID' Is Not Permitted In This Context. Only Constants, Expressions, Or

Oct 5, 2007

I'm pulling data from one database in which the headerID is the primary key which automatically increases by one on each insert. Modifying all of the other fields from one data type to another and then inserting them into another database after the convertion is done. I keep getting this error.

The name 'HeaderID' is not permitted in this context. Only constants, expressions, or variables allowed here. Column names are not permitted.

INSERT INTO [DatabaseName].[dbo].[InvoiceHeaderConverted]
([HeaderID], [InvoiceNumber], [StoreNumber], [DeliveryDate], [DueDate],
[TotalInvoice], [TotalTax], [ManifestNumber])
VALUES(HeaderID = @HeaderID, InvoiceNumber = @InvoiceNumber, StoreNumber = @StoreNumber,
DeliveryDate = @DeliveryDate, DueDate = @DueDate, TotalInvoice = @TotalInvoice,
TotalTax = @TotalTax, ManifestNumber = @ManifestNumber)

Can anyone point me in the right direction on this one. The headerid isn't autogenerated in the second database but is still the primary key.

GROUP BY Expressions Must Refer To Column Names That Appear In The Select List.

Hi,

Is there any way to group variables present in a select statement.

My code:

SELECT @var1=something, @var2=something_else

GROUP BY @var1

I wanted to group by 'something' hence I used a variable to assign it to. But I'm unable to group it.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Sybase OLE DB And Variables Expressions

Feb 17, 2006

I just tried to read data from a sybase db by using a simple "select * from " + @[User::Tablename] defined as expression in a variable, using this variable as command in a Sybase OLE DB source. EvaluateasExpression is set to true, connection usually works fine.

When I try the preview now in the ole db source I receive an error from the

[DataDirect ADO Sybase Provider] "Incorrect syntax near the keyword WHERE"

My Variable does not inlcude any where clause, so does someone know, if the Sybase OLE DB provider add keywords to a statement or where does the WHERE come from??

Thanks in advance

Logical Error: Using Expressions && Package Variables

Jun 24, 2007

Hi,

I have encountered some strange output when testing an SSIS package I've been working on.

Please see this thread for background information: http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1590716&SiteID=1. The previous thread was resolved and i have used the tips listed here to create a package with Data Flow Tasks that use expressions to create 'dynamic' queries.

The Data Flow tasks use two package-scope variables to determine the date range that they're operating on - this allows me to script the from / to dates (usually 'last week' range) or, in event of error, 'back date' the job easily without having to update each individual components.

However, something weird is happening - when I have two data flow tasks (DFT) in the same Sequence Container (tasks that are not 'connected' or configured to operate in a flow) only one DFT is picking up the package variable & returning the rows. The other DFT is not returning any rows & seems to be using the default value of the variables.

I have tested this by simply enabling DFT A and disabling DFT B - debugging shows only one DFT executes correctly. The same point is illustrated when I disable DFT A and enable DFT B. However, if I configure DFT A to run after DFT B then both pick up the correct variable values and return the correct row counts!!

I want Data Flow Tasks that pull data from the same remote source to be the same sequence containers so when an error occurs I can get container level transaction support.

Note:

I have thoroughly checked the 'evaluated' expressions in IDE and in Management Studio - this is an SSIS specific quirk (or me!).

Questions:

What's happening here, have I made a conceptual error of how this should work?
On the same variable topic: is there a way to set values for package level variables at execute time .e.g via command line execution / dtsexecui??

Let me know if you need any extra explaination / diagrams etc to understand this, the other (closed) thread I have listed above should provide more context for my problem

Thanks for your support!!

Dynamic File Names For Raw Files Created By Conditional Expressions

Feb 26, 2007

Hello,

I have a huge table of around 6.2 billion rows in Oracle and I need to load this table to SQL Server. I am creating multiple raw files based on contact_dates in the table. I have used conditional expressions to branch out and create raw files. I need to specify static file names for each branch or I have to create multiple variables for each branch and use expressions to create file names.

My intention is to create only 1 variable and evaluate the expression based on the conditional expression description. Is this possible?

How To Do Type Casting In The Derived Column Expressions Field

Jan 10, 2007

Hi:

I have a Derived Column, called Column1, which has a value "PS" in the Expression field of the editor. SSIS detects it as a Unicode string[DT WSTR] in the Data Type property. In the source table, the column is a char datatype with the lenght of 4. How should I cast this in the expression field, so its converted to char(4). I would need the syntax for it, so I can use it in my Expression area. By the way, i am setting a constant value for this derived column, so in your example, pls use the value instead of column name. I would like to see, how it would be coded?? And also, is there a reference for the expression language somewhere for newbies??? thanks a bunch.

Are There No Computed Column Types? For Storing Expressions (results Of Other Fields)

Jun 4, 2006

I just read something interesting here: http://www.informit.com/library/content.asp?b=STY_Sql_Server_7&seqNum=101

A column type that helds an expression, and in queries returns the results.

That sounds excelent in my database, to save some code in my client applications. E.g adding price totals, and taxes of an order.

I can't find any info about this in later versions of SQL server. Is this not possible anymore?

All,

I am trying to achieve something as above. Basically, the Months subtotals are represented by A and B. Then (X-A) and (X-A-B) are also the subtotals at the same group level as A and B but don't simply display the total for respective years 2007 and 2008, instead those are remaning totals from X. In order to calculate the remaining totals however, one need to consider the subtotal in previous group. For example, for 2007 its X-A, but for 2008 its X-A-B. I would like to know if this can be achieved using Matrix control. If so, what would be the steps?

Thanks.

Using Variables To Select Column Names

Oct 20, 2006

Hi

I've tried declaring and setting variables in my sql statement and then trying to use them instead of defining a column directly - sorry quite hard to explain, i'll do a simple example

eg

DECLARE @column
DECLARE @value
SET @column = 'col1'
SET @value = 'bloggs'

Select * FROM table1 WHERE @column = @value

It keeps returning no results even though i've tried

Select * FROM table1 WHERE col1 = 'bloggs' -- which returns results

I realise its the column which is not being selected, but there must be a way by using a variable?

thanks

Passing Variables And Column Names To EXEC

Oct 9, 2007

Hello, I'm quite new to T-SQL, but since I'm trying to create a statistics page on database contents (Counting savesets in Enterprise Vault saveset Databases) I prefer to do the coding in the databases.
I create temp tables for the distinct partitions in the saveset table. Then I pass 2 variables to the EXEC function, but it seems unable to pass the ['+@idpartition+']-variable as a value:
Declare @EVBase varchar(20)Declare @IdPartition INTSet @EVBase=(SELECT EVMbxName from Servers) Set @IdPartition=(SELECT TOP 1 Dist_Partitions FROM TEMP_EV1)EXEC('SELECT COUNT (IdPartition)FROM ['+@evbase+']..SAVESET SS LEFT OUTER JOIN SavesetStore SSS ON SS.SavesetIdentity = SSS.SavesetIdentityWHERE [IdPartition] = ['+@idpartition+'] AND StoreIdentifier IS NULL')
Server: Msg 207, Level 16, State 3, Line 2Invalid column name '0'.
If I change the last line to: WHERE [IdPartition] = 2 AND StoreIdentifier IS NULL')The script runs fine - but I need the value from the table. Any help will be appreciated.
Best regards, Tim

Expressions

Jun 7, 2006

When creating expressions we have access to a list of functions. It is my understanding that while these functions seem to have the same names and parameters as SQL functions, they are not so. They are implemented in the package libraries themselves. It is also my understanding that this function library cannot be extended to add new ones.

Am I correct? If so... why not?

Leaving alone the fact that they follow the same screwy names as SQL (instead of .NET on which SSIS is built on) and what seems to be a limited library (i.e. You have YEAR(), MONTH(), DAY() functions but no HOUR(), MINUTE(), or SEC() functions -- instead you have to use DATEPART())

I mean honestly... a common expression for most people is using date and times for folder and filenames... So instead of a simple .NET type expression of DateTime.ToString("yyyyMMdd") or Format(DateTime. Now, "yyyyMMdd_hhmmss") I end up with the very complex:

(DT_STR, 4, 1252) YEAR( GETDATE() ) + RIGHT("0" + (DT_STR, 2, 1252) MONTH( GETDATE() ), 2) + RIGHT("0" + (DT_STR, 2, 1252) DAY( GETDATE() ), 2) + "_" + RIGHT("0" + (DT_STR, 2, 1252) DATEPART("hour", GetDate()), 2) + RIGHT("0" + (DT_STR, 2, 1252) DATEPART("minute", GetDate()), 2) + RIGHT("0" + (DT_STR, 2, 1252) DATEPART("second", GetDate()), 2)

Personally I find myself using Script Tasks and Variables to "build" my expressions and just use Expressions to set the property to the variable. (Which I think may defeat the full purpose of expressions.)

Any thoughts?

select * from CmnLanguage where IsVisible = 0select * from CmnLanguage where IsVisible = 1select * from CmnLanguage
I want to make a method which handles these queries.
But at the back end on Stored Procedures
We have to write 3 queries
Which I don't want to do.
I want to minimize the queries and conditions
and want to just write one for these 3
Can any one do it?

My question is how can I combine these three queries into one so that I only get one record set?
Thanks for all the help!

MS SQL:- Regular Expressions

Hi, the Microsoft SQL Server version is 2000

Basically I want use a basic regular expression but can't seem to get the syntax right.

i want to compare ID_short = ID_Long

ID_short is a truncated version of ID_Long, and I want to search on the beginning only (hence I can't use the 'LIKE' comparative on it's own).

What is the syntax to use Reg Expressions (or if anyone knows a non RegExp way of searching the beginning please let me know).

Can I Set Expressions Programmatically?

This is the only thing I'm hitting a brick wall on at the moment; Books Online has been excellent in detailing how to create packages via code up to this point.

For the sake of argument, let's say I want to set the SqlStatementSource property of an Execute SQL task to this value:

"INSERT INTO [SomeTable] VALUES (NEWID(), '" + @[User:omeStringVariable] + "')"

What would the code look like?

Boolean Expressions

Nov 12, 2007

I have a unusual problem, well it is unusual becaue i cannot understand it.

I am retrieving the following data, Revenue, Sales, Commission, and calculating Commission Rate in the report itself.

I got warnings that a textbox that was attempting to calculate the Commission Rate was trying to divide by zero.

When I analysed the data, I realised that indeed there were instances when Revenue was 0.00 and therefore when calculating the commission rate, commission/revenue it returned an error.

I then thought I'd do the following in the expression field

=iif((Fields!RevenueGbp.Value = 0.00), "Zero", (Fields!Commission.ValueGbp/Fields!RevenueGbp.Value))

However this does not work. However if i tried the following Boolean query

=iif((Fields!RevenueGbp.Value = 0.00), "Zero", Fields!CommissionGbp.Value)

it does work. In fact if I use any other identifier or use two field thats add, subtract or multiplied with each other it will work. The problem only arises is when I decide to divide two fields together.

Strangely if the condition is satisfied - [Fields!RevenueGbp.Value = 0.00] - it will still try to work out the division even though it should just return Zero!

Anyone help?

Using Expressions In FOR LOOP

Apr 11, 2007

I need to create a While Loop with the FOR LOOP task.

According to my SSIS book, "to set up a While Loop in the For Loop, simply create an expression that tests a variable that can be modified by some workflow either inside or outside the For Loop"

What I want to do is, put an FTP task (whose job it is to receive a file) inside the For Loop.

I want the control flow to go like:

FOR LOOP --> FTP task --> file received? --> NO --> set variable 0 --> FOR LOOP --> check for variable --> is variable 1? --> NO --> FOR LOOP --> FTP task

and so on, until the variable is set to 1, indicating the successful transfer of the file

According to my book, this can be done simply with the use of expressions.

My question is, how do I write the expressions, both for the FTP task (which will set the variable to 0 or 1), and then the expression for the For Loop, which will evaluate the variable in its expression?

So, seems like I need to write 2 expressions, but not sure how.

Any help appreciated.

I have this so far:SELECT DISTINCT DATEPART(month, dte_date) AS Expr1, DATEPART(yyyy, dte_date) AS Expr2 FROM myTable ORDER BY DATEPART(yyyy, dte_date), DATEPART(month, dte_date)And the query returns the information that I want, but I can only bind one field to the dropdown. I was thinking that if I return the results a single expression (concantenate?) then I could bind that to the dropdown. I'm not sure as how to go about this. Also, the month returned is numeric and I would rather have the name of the month returned (like "July" instead of "7"). Thanks in advance to anyone who helps me.

Numeric Expressions And Aliases

Mar 8, 2006

I'm in the process of building a site and converting views/tables/queries from an Access database to SQL. I've done this quite a few times, and never had any significant issues I couldn't figure out on my own.

In Enterprise Manager, I've created a view and in the query, I need to create an alias that is similar to below:

SELECT ((monthmult) + ((b2avg*15)-(av2*10)) + (lp1+lp2) + ((b1avg*30)-(av1*20))) as PIndexValue

which is how the formula reads in the Access view.

However, when I got to run the query, SQL strips out all of the parentheses and calculates the value in left to right order:

(monthmult + b2avg*15-av2*10 + lp1+lp2 + b1avg*30-av1*20) as PIndexValue

Which gives me an incorrect value.

Does anyone know why this is happening, or am I just unaware of the right way of doing it?

Thank you,

Derrick

? On Check Constraint Expressions

Sep 15, 2004

I am creating a check constraint on a field (GRID_NBR) for values between 1 & 99. I am a little confused on creating the expression for it (Books online is vague).

Can I use the following expression: GRID_NBR BETWEEN 1 AND 99

Or do I have to use: GRID_NBR > 0 AND GRID_NBR < 100

Thanks!

SSIS And Regular Expressions

Feb 9, 2007

Hi,

I have a crappy old database that has an email field with a lot of bad data, and I need to use SSIS to extract a list of names & email addresses.

I have an OLE DB Source set up to pull the relevant columns out of the database. Is there a way that I could setup a Regular Expression based filter to disregard any rows where my email Regex does not match the value of the email column?

Thanks,
John
