Validating Imported Values
Jan 18, 2005
I am using the following SQl statement in a DTS vb file.
The data is coming from an Excel spreadsheet and being put into a SQl server table.
oCustomTask1.SourceSQLStatement = "select `Order No`,`Country`,`Desc`,`Amount` from `Sheet1$` WHERE `Order No` = 1 "
I want to validate the data being put into the table to ensure no duplicates records are entered UNLESS the record has changed in any way.
E.g. If record 1 had a column called "NumberOne" which changed to "Number1" change this information and move the original value to another table.

Hi,
I have imported 3 DTS from SQL 2000 to the SQL 2005 server. The wizard went fine, everything is ok. When I close the wizard window, I cannot see any of them. If I reimport it, it asks confirmation to override it. Where are the 3 DTS in the management Studio if they are not under Legacy DTS?
Thanks

I installed SQL 7 on a new computer and imported DB from another SQL 6.5.
Tables were imported but index and SPs were not.
I had to script those objects and run it on SQL 7.
Any shortcut to import all objects directly?
Again I was importing not upgrading.

Hi. I am working on a dynamic website and backed up the data from our database (SQL Server) into a .bak file from our server. I want to develop the site locally on another machine (doesn't have SQL Server, but MSDE) using the database so I restored the database backup using RESTORE DATABASE FROM... (in the DOS prompt). I found a tutorial how to do this at
http://www.popkin.com/customers/customer_service_center/tip_of_the_week/01_19_04/tipofweek.htm
It did the restore successfully (or so it said) but all that it restored was the database structure (table structure, user information, etc.) but not the actual data in the database. I am using Specify (www.specifysoftware.org) as a database manager.
Could anyone help me out? Can I not go from SQL Server to MSDE? This doesn't seem to be the case because the structure restored okay.
What should I do to correct this problem?
Thanks for your help in advance!

Dear All,
I am making web application using Asp.net C#(Visual Studio2005). And Sql server 2000 as a back End.
Actually I am fetching data from other database(named as retailexcel but in same server). I have wriiten a view (in retailexcel database) to get required data from four table of other database. My problem is when I fetch those data(about 40000 to 50000 record) It taking to much time. I tried catch feature of asp.net2.0. Time reduced but not significantly. So I am trying to import those tables to my database (named Inventory) from that retailexcel.
Now problem is every day or two, record of those tables changes. How can I keep update my tables (which are importing from retailexcel)
Please suggest me some idea.
Thanks

We have an OLTP application with multiple one to many tables relationships that are edited client side. For Example the primary table has descriptive components. One of the multiple table have things like parts and quantity ordered linked by a record number back to the primary table.
When our client transmits their transaction, they actally running a batch job which sends all the client side tables to the SQL Server and then we are trying to issue a stored procedure server side to push this data into our 'dbo' owned server side master tables.
Our problem is generating the fully qualified table name for the from clause.
We have tried declaring a variable but the stored procedure won't compile. Tried user, user_name().
Any solutions would be greatly appreciated.

Has anyone import into SQL Server a text file generated by DB2?
the DB2 files has bunch of weird characters in it that look like they are used for formatting...as opposed to actually being data.
Also, SQL can't find a row terminator.
I received a cobol declaration copy book for the data, but I have no idea what to do with the special characters.
Any help would be appreiciated.

Hi All,
I am importing data from an oracle db and one of the columns is a nclob. I would like to truncate the value if it is more than a certain length. I want to use a derived column transformation. I cannot use the len and substring functions because it is not a string. I could convert it to a unicode string and use those functions, but I am afraid there is a size limitation (4000 characters) on it. Is there smth I am missing? Can anybody please suggest any ideas?
Thanks a lot.

I have a file I'm pulling from another type of database into an Excel spreadsheet and then using my dtsx package to import the spreadsheet into my SQL database. The problem I'm having is that one of the fields coming out of the database to the spreadsheet has the thousands seperator in the field that I want to use as a numeric field without the ",". Right now I have a macro that I run on the spreadsheet to reset the field to straight numbers without commas before importing it, but would like to configure my Integration package to do it automatically.
Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks in Advance

This question is rather open ended. Basically, I'm wondering the different approaches people use when validating input into a stored procedure. The rest of my post just describes a rather simple approach I'm using, and some ideas I have, but I'm eager to know what others are doing. So, if you'd like to comment on this, feel free to do so without reading the following.
I often find myself calling a stored procedure, and needing to validate some of the inputs before proceeding with the rest of the tasks. Such as, making sure a matching record isn't already in the database before adding a new record. Ideally, this sort of validation will report back to the user interface immediately, so that the user can get real-time response to their form input, instead of the all-too-common approach of redirecting to an error page if something goes wrong in the database transaction.
It's also convenient, at times (though perhaps not efficient in all cases) to let your database perform business rules validation of inputs (let the user interface make sure data types are valid, and such), so that you duplicate less code in the event that the stored procedure is called in more than one context.
To address these issues, I've taken to making two stored procedures instead of one. Let the stored procedure be called AddRecord. I'd create that, as well as the procedure named AddRecord_Validate, which would take identical inputs as AddRecord, whenever possible. Nearly the first thing done in AddRecord would be to execute AddRecord_Validate. The user interface would also call AddRecord_Validate, and return any validation errors to the user interface.
This seems rather convenient to me, in many cases, but often it doesn't work as well as I prefer. It's not uncommon for me to end up performing the same queries in the _Validate SP as I do in the parent SP. For example, let's say I'm passing a parameter that I use to look up a record I plan to edit. In my validation, I query the database to verify that the record is found. But in the parent SP, I run the same query again in order to get the stored ID of the record I need to edit. This ends up duplicating queries, making the pair of procedures less efficient on the whole, as well as introducing the likelihood of bugs when code changes in one of the SPs, but not the other.
So I've been brainstorming other approaches. The first idea is to execute a single stored procedure, but when I want to run it in "validation" mode, I simply rollback the transaction. This would let me know if the stored procedure would have run with the specified input, but won't ultimately change anything. Unfortunately, I see some badness in this, such as the entire SP perhaps taking a lot longer to execute that simple validation would have, and side-effects such as incrementing Sequences, or locking the database, and basically just doing a whole lot more work during validation than needs to be done.
The next idea was to require that the user specify the "run mode" via a parameter, either 'validate' or 'run'. Then, all of the validation would be performed at the top of the stored procedure, and a simple IF statement would exit the SP before actually making any changes if it's run in 'validate' mode. Otherwise, it will continue, and do the real work. The only real downside I see to this is forcing the developer to deal with an extra parameter. And, perhaps, it's not really a "relational" approach.
So, what do the rest of you do?

no matter where i put the try statement it says its unhandeled
this error triggers when when i leave the combo box (when its validated) i have even tried placing it here

Ideas - any good articles with quick fixes ???

hi, I am importing data daily to many tables, I want to keep track of the #of rows for each import process. I already have created a trigger as follow:
CREATE TRIGGER tr_bcp_log ON dbo.A
FOR INSERT
AS
declare @name varchar(30),
@row_count int
select @name=name , @row_count= @@rowcount
from inserted
insert into bcp_tracks (name,row_count)
values(@name,@row_count)
GO
The problem is that I am getting a row for each inserted row in table A.for instance if I have 500 rows in table A, I will get 500 rows in the log table like this
table_name,#of rows
A 1
A 1
A 1
etc up to 500 rows for table A
This is not what I want, I want to capture the num of rows for every bcp process , so in the log table I want to see the following :
table_name, #of rows
A 500
B 600
C 450
A 250
etc
Any help ?
thanks

I have a stored procedure which will run automatically. I've got try...catch code in the procedure, but I found a bug with the code where if there are any import errors, it doesn't recognize that that there was an error and it runs through the try code as through there was no problems. (I reported the bug).
I added some code using @@rowcount to check if there were rows imported, and if not, it moves the data file to a error folder so I know there was a problem with the import. But this only checks if at least one row was imported, not if all the rows in the datafile have been imported. (i.e. if the first row imported correctly, and the second did not, it still sees it as successful).
The problem is some of the data files have only one row to import and some have multiple rows. Is there a way to count the number of rows in the datafile, then count the number of rows imported, to verify they are the same number imported?
Thanks,
Laura

Hi there,
Today I tried out Integration Services and after a couple of hours of confusion I am impressed by the power of this product. I was wondering if I might get some help on the 'best practice' for the following requirements:
I have a foreach container that scans a directory and calls a data flow task for each file in the directory. The files import to the database fine, but I want to modify the procedure so it only imports files that have not yet been imported. There are a couple of scenarios:
- a file is created in the directory
- a file is modified in the directory
In both cases I want to insert (or reinsert) the file. How can I modify my package to accomodate this behaviour? Storing the filename is an option, but I am not sure how to also bring in the file creation/modified dates.
Is this the right approach?
Any other ideas?
Cheers,
Alex

Hi,
I have imported some tables from msaccess but as the datetime field from access is different from SQL Server I had to change all columns type from datetime to varchar...
Now in SQL Server i'm trying to convert this data into datetime, and I'm using cast(field as datetime) and sql give me this message..."The conversion of a char data type to a datetime data type resulted in an out-of-range datetime value."
how can I select these rows that are giving me errors ??? OR is there a way to convert this data ??
I don't know if in this data it will give the error... but as the table is too big...I can't post everything here...
------------------------------- EDIT
I got the problem...
I have data like 4/11/2006 9:23:19 AM and others like 11/21/2005 6:02:13 PM
So the first one 4/11/2006 9:23:19 AM it converts without problem, but wrongly...cause the month is "4" and not "11"
the other one 11/21/2005 6:02:13 PM it tries to convert the month as 21 and not as 11....
How can I solve this ??

hi guys, have a good day.
i have a table with a column named "cardRange", that column can only have integer values from 0 to 5.
i want the validation in the value that will be inserted in that column to be made in my sql server rather than in my programmed software.
Is there a way to validate (through a storedprocedure, or a trigger, or a column propertie) the values i want to add to my table??
In other wordsI just want my table to make sure that only a integer from 0 to 5 (or any other simple validation) can be added to the table.
Any help? thank you very much.

I'm totally new to SSIS and need some direction.I'ved worked with the Import/Export wizard to create a package that imports a text file into a SQL Server table. However, I'm told the format of the text file changes over time and that's not good. I need to program in a format validation check on the source file before it gets imported. If it changes, I'm suppose to throw an alert or something.Let's say the file has the columns: field1 (string[10]), field2 (date), field3 (integer), field4 (decimal).I did some testing and tried to change the data to a longer string in field1, and SSIS recognizes that and errors out. How do I get it to send the bad record to an bad record file? Do I just set a destination file connection for bad records and connect the red arrow from the source file to the destination file?I forget if the source file connection recognizes a bad date and errors out. I'll have to check again. But when I changed the data in the datafile for field3 from integer to decimal. It didn't recognize that as an error. It read it in "successfully". That's not good.Similar thing happened when I changed field4 from decimal to integer in the data file. But I'm not too worried about that.Any hints on how to do this or a better approach on checking for file format changes would be appreciated.Ken

I have an InstallShield project, which launches SQL Server 2005 setup using a .INI file for the settings.
During the installation interview, I prompt the user to enter their PIDKEY. I then replace a value in the .INI with this key.
The problem is that if it is entered incorrectly, the obvious occurs where the SQL Server 2005 setup fails.
Is there a way for me to validate the PIDKEY before calling setup for SQL Server?
Thanks!

Hi,
I have one date parameter in my report. The user will be able to manually enter or use the calendar control. In the case of entering manually, is there any way to validate the input string? How can we prevent users from entering alphabets?
Also, is there any way to reduce the length of the parameter textbox. Can you please help?
Thanks,
Sonu.

Hi there,
I have a Problem with my SSIS and it is that when you open the package it says "Validating <Data Flow>" and it takes a loooooong time to finaly open ( by long I mean like 3 or 4 hours to just for open!!!). In 3 of the DF, I have conections to a Unisys server and in exactly in this DF is where it takes its time. This Unisys system its kind a slow but not that slow. I am running on a server that have 4 G and 8 processors, so it cant be the machine.
my question is, How can I make it validate faster ? I have tried to work Offline but when I run the package I need to be online.
Any Ideas? Am I doing anything wrong here??
thanks!

I have a table imported from excel(5 var fix and 5 val fix) like:
Var1 val1 var2 val2 var3 val3 var4 val4 var5 val5
Color Red Size 4 Height 2inch NULL NULL NULL NULL
Color Red Size 5 Height 2inch NULL NULL Length 1 cm
Color Red Size 4 Height 3inch NULL NULL NULL
Color Black Size 6 Height 1inch NULL NULL NULL NULL
I need the output as
Var --- Val
Color --- Red,Black
Size --- 4,5,6
Height 1inch,2inch,3inch
Length 1 cm
Var or val can be either NULL or white space. I cannot use a function.
