Variables To Hold Filenames

Feb 8, 2007

I was wondering if it is possible to create a variable that holds the filename as an expression. I am using a For each loop to pick up files and i want to insert the 'Filename' as a colum in to the destination Table so that i can differentiate among the rows in my destination Table.

Using the 'Derived Colum' in DTS I can link the colum to a variable. However i do not know how to create the variable which will dynamically store the filename for each file....

Any Clues...
Would really appreciate the help.....

Or is anyone knows any other simple way of inserting the filename as a column in the destination Table ...Been stuck on this for a while...

Script Objects To Different Filenames

Oct 10, 2007

I'm using SQL2005 and need to script a bunch of Tables (and possibly other objects) to files. I can't make one big file with all the objects in it. I need to create an indiviual file for each object and each filename needs to be something like dbo.objectname.sql. I will be checking each file (object script) into VSS. Can someone tell me how to do this withouth having to manually generate a script for each object? Is there a way to check each object you want scripted and the SSMS spit out a file per object?

EXEC

I’m just not sure out I pass this to my loop 1 element at a time.

E.g. Let’s say there are 10 files in my folder, I wish to loop through each name using my @Filename parameter

DECLARE @Path
varchar(50), @FileName
varchar(20)
SET @Path
= 'C:myFiles'
EXEC

Sp Hold

Aug 23, 2005

Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone could help...

I have a usertable which adds anyone whom is new to the records. However the site has had quite an increase in traffic and the stored procedure (SP) The problem is that if two new users call the SP with say a second of each other the sp tries to enter the same user key.

The sp basically checks the last id and add 1 on to it.. Simple but inbetween checking and interest someone else is doing the same creating a violation ...

Basically ineed to put a hold on the select and intert until complete... A sort of que up ...

Sorry if it a dumb question...

ps i've read about changing the entire conection but i only need it for this SP...

Thanks

Is There A Way To Change Logical And Physical Datebase Filenames?

Aug 23, 2006

A database was set up as a test database and then the database name changed but the logical and physical filenames still have test in their name - obviously not a good idea. I have tried to change the physical file name but get the error message that the physical file name cannot be changed once the database has been created. I have also tried detaching the database and renaming the mdf and ldf files but these could not be re-attached so had to revert back to the original names.

Retreiving TranLog Filenames From Windows Directory

Jan 24, 2006

Due to circumstances beyond my control, I have to restore a full database backup from October 1, 2005 and then over 4400 transaction logs to bring a database up to Jan 01, 2006 on a development server (storage team lost all daily full backups from 10/02/2005 to 01/01/2006). Since the backups were not taken on this machine originally, the information I would pull from the sysjobhistory tables to get the transaction backup names is not available. Does anyone have a link or a script to pull the filenames from the backup directory into sql server so I can build a dynamic script to apply the tran logs instead of running all 4400+ of them by hand? Thanks, Tom

SQL Server 2008 :: Split Apart Filenames Into A Database?

Oct 11, 2015

I am trying to break apart a list of filenames that was inserted into a database. It only breaks out the first one then moves onto the next record. If I do them individually then seem to work but not the whole table when queried. I need to break out each file into a temp table then insert them into a documents field in a database.

my filenames look like so and can have from 1 file name to 10 file names in the string.

test.pdf,test2.pdf,test4.tif,test5.pdf
somedoc.tif,test.docx,test4.pdf

This is my current method, I needed to create a cursor around it to go through all the records, split out the filenames and insert into a temp table. But if there is a better way ill do it. The problem with this is only the first file is getting inserted into the temp table and nothing else even if the filename has 4 files in it.

Create table #tempFiles (OldStrId int, OldPercent int, strfilename varchar(max), RequestId int, OblId int)
declare @OldStr int, @OldPer int, @FileName varchar(max), @intcount int;
Declare filenames CURSOR FOR Select intSTRBonusID, intPercentID, strFileName from tblSTR where strFileName > ''
UNION ALL
Select intSTRBonusID, intPercentID, strFileName from tblSTRHist where intPercentID in (61,62) and strFileName > ''

Package Configuration For Generic Pathnames And Specific Filenames

Apr 3, 2007

It's very easy to make a generic xml configuration file for the connection to the database for all packages my project contains. The connectionstring is the same for all these packages

Now I want to do the same for all flat file sources I have in my project where the connectionstring is not the same for all packages.

For example I use the following flat files in my project:

c:AAA.txt

c:BBB.txt

c:CCC.txt

If I move the packages to the production database the flat file sources are located in another directory.

So in fact for the flat file sources there is a generic part for all files (in this case 'c: ') and a specific part ('AAA.txt', 'BBB.txt' and 'CCC.txt').

Can I indicate this in the package configurations sections? And how?

Thanks,

John

How To Get Hold Of Data From Web Provider Using SQL Server?

Feb 16, 2006

I am new to SQL server so apologies if this is a stupid question.

I have a website built and hosted by another company, with SQL server
back end data. They don't want to analyse the data but I do. I am
familiar with SQL and have SQL server express running on my laptop.

So I was thinking I could get them to send me the data from the server
(it will be less than 1GB I imagine), and I could analyse it myself.

So my questions are:

will this work?

and what do I ask them to send me? Is it just a couple of files they
have to copy and send me? Or is it more complicated than that?

Many thanks for any advice you can offer.

Many Data Entry Tables - Which Ones Hold Records?

When data entry is complete, it needs to beprocessed. Here's where the questions start.How can we easily determine in which tables a customer has data and howbest to select that data?We're not opposed to putting all the data in a single table. Thistable would wind up having ~15 million records and constantly have CRUDoperations performed against it by up to 5000 users simultaneously.With sufficient hardware, is this too much to ask of the db?

Variable To Hold Two Digit Month In A Expression

Mar 27, 2007

I'm using a file Task to rename files to include a Month and Year in the FIle. Part of the requirement in the file name is a two digit month. I have the following query built which will return a two digit month regardless if it's a one or two digit month.

SELECT REPLACE(STR(MONTH(DATEADD("Month", -1,GETDATE())), 2), ' ', '0')

This works perfect when running in T-SQL, but when attempting to define a variable in the expression

REPLACE(STR(MONTH(DATEADD("Month", -1,GETDATE())), 2), ' ', '0') expression keeps failing the evaluation?

Anyone run into a simliar issue or have a suggested work around?

How Do I Use A @variable To Hold On Value Return From An Exec ('string Command') Statement.

SQL 2012 :: Design A Table To Hold Filters For Selection Criteria?

May 5, 2014

I have an ordering database with several tables that store data of orders belonging to a wide variety of clients. There is a generic report that I need to run which outputs the same data elements. However the criteria to select these orders will vary widely between each client. For e.g.

i) for client# 1 it could be all orders that are still open after 30 days of placing an order

(
OrderStatus = 'Open'
AND
GetDate() - OrderCreationDate >= 30
)

ii) for client# 2 it could be all orders that have been completed 60 days or earlier

(
OrderStatus = 'Completed'
AND
GetDate() - OrderCompletedDate >= 60
)

iii) for client# 3 it could be a combination of different things (all orders in West Region that are in hold status for more than 10 days + all orders in Eastern Region that are in shipping and are expected to be delivered in the next 2 days + all completed orders for the rest of the regions).

(
OrderRegion = 'West'
AND
OrderStatus = 'Hold'
AND
GetDate() - OrderHoldDate >= 10

[code].....

I want to have a stored procedure that selects all data and dynamically attach the where condition at the end for filtering. This way I wouldn't have to worry about any additions/changes that are made to the selection criteria. I can build an interface for admins who can use the UI to maintain the selection criteria and not worry about any code changes to accommodate it. I would like to design a table that holds this criteria. At this point in time, I am thinking of using key value pairs (Column Name, Column Value) but I am not sure how to implement multiple logical operators.

The DTS 2000 package have 3 global variables that I can identify on " Execute DTS 2000 Package Task Editor - Inner Variables ". I believe the SSIS variables must be mapped on " Execute DTS 2000 Package Task Editor - OuterVariables ". How can I associate the SSIS variables(OuterVariables ) to "Inner Variables"? How can I do it? Much Thanks.

How To Design A Package With Variables So That I Can Run It By Dos Command Assigning Values To Variables?

Jan 24, 2006

Hi,

I would like to design a SSIS package, which have couple of variables. It loads a xls file specified in a variable [varExcelFileFullPath] .

I will run it by commands: exec xp_cmdshell 'dtexec /SQL ....' (pls see an example below).

It seems it does not get the values passed in for those variables. I deployed the package to a sql server.

are there any grammar errors here? I copied it from dtexecui. It worked inside Dtexecui not in dos command.

exec xp_cmdshell 'dtexec /SQL "LoadExcelDB" /SERVER test /USER *** /PASSWORD ****

/MAXCONCURRENT " -1 " /CHECKPOINTING OFF /REPORTING EW

/LOGGER "{6AA833A1-E4B2-4431-831B-DE695049DC61}";"Test.SuperBowl"

INSTEAD OF UPDATE Trigger To Hold Update

Apr 3, 2008

hi!

i have a database with about 20 tables. i appended to each table a column "UpdatedOn", and i want to write a trigger to set the date of the update date in that column, using a trigger.

i want to avoid the trigger launching for the last column (UpdatedOn).

how can i detect the rows that changed, and modify only the update date/time?
i read something about TableName_Inserted and TableName_Deleted, but i would prefer to copy as generic as possible the data from there, meaning, not to write column names in my script.

another idea i thought about was to prevent the trigger executing if no other column except for UpdatedOn changed, but... i encounter some trouble, when i try to pass column name (as string) to UPDATE() function.(Error: Expecting ID or QUOTED_ID)

thank you in advance.
