Here is the brief to my problemWe had our database on SQL Server 2000 and Windows 2000.This machine
had 2gb of RAM and dual Penitum 3 processors and about 25-30 users were
connected all the time. The size of database is around 2 gb. Even on this setup
rate of data retrival was good, never had any issues. We moved to SQL Server 2005 and Windows 2003. This machines has
2 Pentium Xeon 3.4 processors and 2 stick of KINGSTON 1024 MB 333
MHZ DDR DIMM ECC CL2.5 DUAL RANK X4 INTEL. The rate of data
retrival is awful and its very slow. It using about 1.7 to 1.9 gb of RAM all the
time. Page File usage is about 2.07 gb and Virtual Usage is about 1.7gb.I dont quiet understand why is it so slow to get data. We use bespoke software,
so nothing has changed there. Hardware specification of our server is far more better then the recommended
system requirement for SQL Server 2005.Am i missing something out or i havent set up the SQL Server properly? Any help would really be appreciated.Mits
An SSIS package to transfer data from a DB instance on SQL Server 2005 to SQL Server 2000 is extremely slow. The package uses an OLEDB Source to OLEDB Destination for data transfer which is basically one table from sql server 2005 to sql server 2000. The job takes 5 minutes to transfer about 400 rows at night when there is very little activity on the server. During the day the job almost always times out.
On SQL Server 200 instances the job ran in minutes in the old 2000 package.
Is there an alternative to this. Tranfer Objects task does not work as there is apparently a defect according to Microsoft. Please let me know if there is any other option other than using a Execute 2000 package task or using an ActiveX Script to read records from one source and to insert them into the destination source, which I am not certain how long it might take and how viable will that be?
In a Data Flow Task, I have an insert that occurs into a SQL Server 2000 table from a fixed width flat file. The SQL Server table that the data goes into is accessed through an OLE DB connection manager that uses the Native OLE DBMicrosoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server.
In the OLE DB Destination, I changed the access mode from Table or View - fast load to Table or View because I needed to implement OLE DB Destination Error Output. The Error output goes to a SQL Server 2000 table that uses the same connection manager.
The OLE DB Destination Editor Error Output 'Error' option is configured to 'Redirect' the row. 'Set this value to selected cells' is set to 'Fail component'.
Was changing the access mode the simple reason why the insert from the flat file takes so much longer, or could there be other problems?
is there a step by step paper to get there? here is what i need to consider. I Iwill have many customers that will need their own set of records and access pages "branded for their company" each customer will have many clients. I am hosting this application on a windows 2003 server with SQL 2005 server enterprise.
I am using windows authentication, I have created a username in windows, then i added the windows user in SQL management studio in security, granted "DB Read" and "DB write" and again under the database security tab. still from the web authentication fails. i must be nissing a step or two?
I expect to set up a username for each database as i setup new customers.
I have one column in SQL Server 2005 of data type VARCHAR(4000).
I have imported sql Server 2005 database data into one mdb file.After importing a data into the mdb file, above column data type converted into the memo type in the Access database.
now when I am trying to import a data from this MS Access File(db1.mdb) into the another SQL Server 2005 database, got the error of Unicode Converting a memo data type conversion in Export/Import data wizard.
Could you please let me know what is the reason?
I know that memo data type does not supported into the SQl Server 2005.

I have 25+ WinXP SP2 workstations on a Novell file server (Novell login) and also have a W2K SQL 2000 Server for our database. We are usint Win NT authentication to the SQL Server.
One AND ONLY ONE user is having trouble with this setup. Her workstation is PAINFULLY slow accessing the SQL server through my Delphi programs, through our third party programs, and through ODBC connections.
I thought it was her workstation until I configured a clean workstation for her, and it too had the same problem. I then took a brand new Dell 9200 workstation with 2gb memory, gigabit NIC, etc. and configured it to use our servers. It too had the same slowness connecting to the SQL server. Everything else is fast.
I deleted her entry in the NT domain users table, and re-entered her. No help.
We have several people accessing the SQL server 7.0 data thru' MS Access Server has been slow on queries etc.Everything looks good,other than this one finding of MS Access being used for update/select. Is MS Access a potential problem? How to solve the problem of slow response time?
Note: MS Access is running on the client desktops retrieving data from SQL Server and joining data from MS Access to SQL Server.
I've got a football (soccer for the yanks!) predictions league website that is driven by and Access database. It basically calculates points scored for a user getting certain predictions correct. This is the URL:

There are two sections of the site however that have almost ground to halt now that more users have registered throught the season. The players section and league table section have gone progressively slower to load throughout the year and almost taking 2 minutes to load.
All the calculations are performed in the Access database Ive written and there are Access SQL queries to get the data out.
My question is, is how can I speed the bloody thing up! ! Somone has alos suggested to me that I use stored procedures and SQL Server to speed things up? Ive never used SQL Server before so I am bit scared about using it (Im only a hobbyist), and I dont even know what a SP is or does. How easy will it be upgrading the whole thing to SQL Server and will it be worth the hassle, bearing in mind I expect my userbase to keep growing? Do SP help speed things up significantly? Would appreciate some advice!

I have a customer using a web app where the data is drawn from a database in SQL Server 2005.
In addition to its normal tables, the database has two lookup tables which are deleted, recreated, and repopulated once a week. The data for these two tables comes from two queries in an Access database which essentially turn many related tables into two flat tables.
I know this can be done with SSIS, I've done it, I suppose it could be done witth SSMA for Access, but could this operation be done with a stored prodecure ? Most steps would not be a problems. They would be:
- Drop the two tables in SQL Server (no problem) - Recreate them (no problem, maybe better to just delete all existing records, either way)
- Connect to the query in the Access database (here is where I have questions) - Simply do an INSERT from the Access query to the SQL table.
So my question is whether we can connect to an Acess query from a stored proc, I suppose using ODBC.
Can this be done? If so how? Are there any papers on this topic?
I have a database in ACCESS and i want everytime that there is a change made in Access the cude in SQL server to be automatically updated .Is there a way that this can be done with Integration Services?
I have an application built with Access 2003 (MDB). It is running under Windows XP without any problems. If I run it under Vista, it works technically well but I get the data very slow from the server.

I am using two almost idential laptops, one with XP and one with Vista, the only differences is that the XP laptop has 1G of RAM and running Office XP and the Vista has 2G RAM and is running Office 2007.
I have a MS Access database that has linked tables to a SQL Server 2000 database. The performance of the Access database on Vista is 5-10 times slower on the Vista machine. Just flipping through records or opening forms can take 5 - 15 seconds on the Vista machine while the XP machine takes 1 sec or less.
What gives? I looked at the CPU performance and the network performance while the Access database was busy flipping through records, the network traffic was < 2% and the CPU would spike to 40% on one of the CPUs (dual core) but would remain under 5% most of the time.
I also previously had Office XP installed on the Vista machine and it had the same performance issue so bought and install Office 2007 on the Vista machine and it did not solve the problem.
It seems that Vista is doing something that is slowing down Access with linked tables. Is this a issue between Vista and using an ODBC connection to SQL Server?
I have to export data from SQL Server 2005 express to Access database. I have done many import/export using DTS package via SQL 2000. I don't have BI installed in my SQL SERVER 2005 Express. I understand that I have to use SSIS for sql server 2005. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Here is my situation: I am creating a database driven ASP.Net web application that will be used over the internet. My ASP.Net application connects to my SQL server 2005 database/server by using a SQL server login. I am using the DPAPI API to encrypt my connection stings with a hidden entropy value for extra security. I am using the SQL login for obvious reasons, as my users will not have a windows login.
What I am trying to do: I want to limit this SQL login account to be able to just run/execute stored procedures and NOT access the tables or views directly. In my ASP.Net application I am using the MS applications data block, and I am using stored procedures for every single database access action. There is no inline SQL being executed from my web application.
What I have tried so far:
I created a new schema and made the above SQL login account owner of this schema. I then granted "Execute" permissions to the SQL login and DENY permissions to all other permissions.
I created an database role with "Execute" only permissions and DENY permissions to all other permissions.
What Happened: In BOTH of the above scenarios I tested a direct SQL statement against one of my tables, from my ASP.Net application and I was able retrieve data back, NOT GOOD, exactly what I am trying to STOP.
If someone could give me (Step-by-Step) guide on how to setup the situation I am looking for, I would be very grateful!

I am having a problem ,SQL server is running very slow.This is happening some days only.For example my stored procedure ususally runs less than 2 minutes, some days will take 13minutes.I dont understand the problem.All the stored procedure having the same problem.Sorry, I am not a DBA,basically a devloper.Daily morning we are taking the DB backup and indexes already applied.DB size 10461.06 MB,RAM 4GB,CPU usage is less than 50%,This is a Cinema Database,so lot of users are accessing at same time(Web,IVR,cinema ticket counters etc).We are using SQL reports.Because of the stored procedure running slow,can not view the reports.pls advice..

Hi! I have a SQLServer 2005 running om a 64bit cluster. It is used to run a SharePoint 2007 portal. My problem is that the access to the database from the other servers in the farm is very slow.
I made a test program in C# that creates a standard .Net sqlConnection and runs a simple query 100 times. When run on the database server it takes less than a second, but when I run it from the web frontend server it takes 30 seconds. It never fails, it's just slow. The network connection is fast when copying files etc.
I see nothing out of the ordinary in the event log.
Do any of you have an idea what might be the problem or know how I could try to find the problem?
hi~ our system to run the the job with SSIS package is slower than DTS package. The SSIS package action is the same as DTS package. Why? What do I take care??
P.S. When perfoming a simple Query on the databases (with 1.000.000 rows result) with SQL Server Management Studio Express, I see 37 seconds for SQL Server 2000 and 33 Second for SQL Server 2005. That is more the result I expect.

The request is performing quite well on the SQL Server 2000 but on the SQL Server 2005 it takes much longer. I already installed the SP2 x64, I'm running the SQL Server 2005 on a x64 environment. As I stated in the comment in the query it takes 90 seconds to finish with the line included, but if I exclude the line it takes 1 second. I think there must be something wrong with the join's or something else which has maybe changed in SQL Server 2005. All the tables joined have a primary key. Maybe you folks can spot the error / mistake / wrong type of doing things easily. I would appreciate any help you can offer me to solve this problem.
On the web I saw that there is a Cumulative Update 4 for the SP2 which fixes the following:

Anyhow I think the problem is something else, I haven't tried out the cumulative update yet, as I think it is something different, more general why this query takes ages to process.
Hi, I am using SQL2K for a HMS application database. And I have several database in it. After a long periode of time (about 6 month) the the application is slowing down when accessing the data. I use full log for the database.
I keep only the last 3 days transaction data and every day I delete transaction data older then 4 day, so the number of records in the transaction table is just about 3000 to 5000 records only. Please help me. Thanks.
Hello,I have a Win2K3 Server with SS2005 developers edition. I am working on aWindows XP Pro workstation which has SQL Server 2000 installed as well asthe SQL Native Client. I'm using an MS Access ADP to connect to the serverand for some reason it's extremely slow, even to the point of throwing timeout errors and "can't generate SSPI context" messages. I've hit the MSwebsite and found info on the SSPI error, but none of the items thatgenerate the error apply to my situation. I've tried using the surface areamanager to change the connection to name pipes, name pipes and tcpip etc,but no luck.Is there anything I should be looking at or any known issues that wouldaffect this kind of performance?Thanks!Rick
I have the following configuration: - Server with 8 AMD Opteron Processors - 24 GB Memory - Windows Server 2003 64 bit - SQL 2005 64 bit - EMC Storage
The main instance is defined to use 7 Processors and has about 10 databases.
The problem is: When I run a "simple" Query (DISTINCT or GROUP BY) on a Table with something like 1 million rows, SQL 2005 is very very slow !!! The same query is on a SQL 2000 about 1000times faster ...
Does anybody has some ideas how to configure the system to make it more useful ... ??
I am using the 3-tiered architecture design (presentation, business laws, and data acess layers). I am stuck on how to send the image the user selects in the upload file control to the BLL and then to the DAL because the DAL does all the inserts into the database. I would like to be able to check the file type in the BLL to make sure the file being uploaded is indeed a picture. Is there a way I can send the location of the file to the BLL, check the filetype, then upload the file and have the DAL insert the image into the database? I have seen examples where people use streams to upload the file directly from their presentation layer, but I would like to keep everything seperated in the three classes if possible. I also wasn't sure what variable type the image would be in the function in the BLL that receive the image from the PL. If there are any examples or tips anyone can give me that would be appreciated.
We have an information retrieval application in which there is a single connection to a database followed by multiple table open, read, and close commands. Response time is consistantly less than 1 second on a LAN. When Internet connected (not VPN), the first table read is typically fast, but the response time becomes slower and slower after multiple table open, read, and close commands. There seems to be a considerable amount of handshaking based on monitoring of the router's status lights.
I have a problem with bad perfomance with my import of data from a SQL Server 2000 database. I use an OLEDB datasource in my SSIS package to connect to the sql server 2000 database. My 2005 server runs 64bits but i dont think this is an issue. With this configuration the import is VERY slow, we are talking about 40+ minutes to get 3.5 million rows with about 20 columns. When i create a test DTS package on the SQL Server 2000 server itself and run it, its blazingly fast. Has anyone run into something similar?
