View Output File For Job From SSMS
Dec 7, 2007
In SSMS, when editing a step in a SQL Agent job, on the Advanced screen for a step there is a button called View by the Output File. How do you get that to be enabled? It's always disabled for me and I wish I could view the file right from the job. This is something I miss from 2000. However, the button is there so I would think that I am just doing something wrong.

While working on a forum posting on this site, I came up with this code:
WITH JoinedTables(UserGroup, UserName) as (
SELECT 'UG1', 'Tom' UNION All
SELECT 'UG1', 'Harry' UNION all
SELECT 'UG2', 'Albert' UNION all
SELECT 'UG3', 'Jim' UNION all
SELECT 'UG3', 'Sam'
)
SELECT UserGroup "@name"
, (SELECT UserName "User" FROM JoinedTables T2
Where t2.UserGroup = t1.UserGroup
FOR XML PATH(''), TYPE)
FROM (SELECT DISTINCT UserGroup FROM JoinedTables) t1
FOR XML PATH('UserGroup'), ROOT('UserGroupsInfo')
The code does what I want but SSMS seems to have problems with the results. Every so often, if I click on the results, instead of opening a tab showing the XML, SSMS crashes.
I'm running SP1, version 11.0.3000.0.

I have several views in a database that I need to edit in SSMS 2008.
If I right click on a view, I can select "Design" and do the changes and save. Everything saves ok.
However, I cannot enter comments that way. I have tried View Script As -> ALTER To -> New Query Editor Window but this method creates a new view e.g. SQLQuery1 i.e. I can't save the origial view name.
Is there a way to alter views in code and save them back into the database under their original view name?

When I execute the following command, I get the output truncated to 79 characters, including three dots (as an ellipsis, I suppose).
EXEC master..xp_cmdshell 'powershell.exe "Get-ChildItem D:Databazepaleontologieprilohyverejneg -filter g417*.* -recurse | select Fullname | out-string -width 255"'When I execute the core command directly in Powershell, whether the text or ISE version, it works correctly, with or without the out-string -width command.
Get-ChildItem D:Databazepaleontologieprilohyverejneg -filter g417*.* -recurse | select Fullname | out-string -width 255What does it take to get SSMS to not truncate my output strings?

I want to provide access to one of my users to a database on the production server. I do not want this user to be able to view anything other than the tables in that database, or the other databases on my production server.
I gave him access to one DB - TestDB- and made him data_reader on that DB. I had set that as his default database. However, when he logs in using SSMS he can see from Object Explorer a listing of all the databases on that server, although he can't access any of those. This is an external user and I don't want him to see any of that stuff, including other objects (SPs, Views, etc.,) even within TestDB.
To summarize, I want to grant access to a windows user to see/select from ONLY tables in TestDB of my production server, and I do not want him to be able to see any objects other than tables of this DB from SSMS.

I am using SQL 2014 RTM (may be it's time to upgrade).
I have the following view:
create view [dbo].[SiriusV_Max4SaleList]
as
select m.id as Max4SaleId,
mt.[Description] as [TypeDescription],
CAST(m.[type] as tinyint) as [Type],
m.start_time as [StartTime],
m.end_time as [EndTime],
[Code] ....
I am thinking I may want to remove CAST for department, category, item later on as I don't really care if these columns would be defined as key for my EF model, but I do want to search by these columns. Anyway, this is my current view.
I executed the following select statement once
select * FROM dbo.siriusv_max4saleList where department like 's%' or category like 's%' or item like 's%'
And I believe I got 29 rows initially. However, when I execute this statement now I'm getting just 13 rows. If I execute just the department like 's%' I am getting 0 rows although I can see in the first result a row where department has s in in.
I guess I keep it here since I've created the message already but now I figured out why I am not getting the expected result. I used the condition like 's%' and not like '%s%' which application is doing.

Hi all,
I have "SQL Server Express" as well as SSMS-E installed on the same machine. I am trying to get SSMS-E to connect to a database (i.e., an .MDF file) that resides in a folder on the desktop.
After establishing a connection to my "SQL Server Express" instance within SSMS-E, I right-click on "Databases", in the "Object Explorer" window and select "Attach..." and click the "Add..." button. The resulting dialog box opens in the directory:
"C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLData" where I see several MDF files. But as I said, my MDF is not in this directory - it's on the desktop.
If I try to navigate to the proper directory on the desktop I see no MDF files. In fact, I cannot even navigate past my username -- that is, I cannot even navigate to the desktop, let alone folders on the desktop. I don't know why.
Of course I *could* put the MDF file in the SQL-E approved directory but shouldn't I just be able to navigate to it using SSMS-E? Incidentally, I *AM* able to connect to the database on my desktop if I use Visual Studio and I specify "UserInstance=true". Not specifying "UserInstance=true" results in this error:
An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file C:Documents and SettingsRobinDesktopMyCompany.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share.
Can someone explain what might be causing the problem with SSMS-E, and, for that matter, why it's necessary to specify "UserInstance=true" in Visual Studio?
Thanks so much. I hope these are not too many questions.
Robin

Normally, whenever I've wanted to export data to a file (which is very rare that I do), I have used SSMS. Yes, I'm sure there's a way to do it in T-SQL, but I've just done an export using the SSMS wizard.
But that appears to me to no longer be available in SSMS 2012. So, how is it done from SSMS 2012? Or is it only done using T-SQL/DDL?

OK,
I have two data tables where depending on the time line item it is, it needs a different join.
So, it's like this:
Table Credit Card
Table Memo
If Credit Card is VISA, join on column A
If Credit Card is MA, join on column B
So, I created two views. One view has all the info joined on column A. The other view has all the info joined on column B.
How do I create a third view that will output all the data from View A and View B without making it into a cartesian product?
I can't change the table structure due to legacy application/data issues.
Thanks!

hello all,
i am trying to create a view but i keep getting the error 'View definition includes no output columns or no items in the FROM clause.'
below is the select statement that's the basis of my view. the explanation i got from the F1 help of enterprise manager was ...
View definition includes no output columns or no items in the FROM clause.
A view definition must have at least one table or table-structured object in the FROM clause, and must have at least one column in the select list. The view definition is missing one or both. Modify the view definition accordingly.
query:
select
Case_CaseId,
Logged,
CAST(DATEDIFF(minute, Logged, Waiting)/60.0 AS NUMERIC(9, 2)) AS Waiting,
CAST(DATEDIFF(minute, Logged, Investigating) /60.0 AS NUMERIC(9, 2)) AS Investigating,
CAST(DATEDIFF(minute, Logged, Rejected) /60.0 AS NUMERIC(9, 2)) AS Rejected,
CAST(DATEDIFF(minute, Logged, Resolved) /60.0 AS NUMERIC(9, 2)) AS Resolved,
CAST(DATEDIFF(minute, Logged, Solved) /60.0 AS NUMERIC(9, 2)) AS Solved,
CAST(DATEDIFF(minute, Logged, Closed) /60.0 AS NUMERIC(9, 2)) AS Closed

Hi.
My company has upgraded some of the database systems to SQL 2005 while other have a fresh install.
The problem we're seeing is that the view button located in the Advanced section of the steps in the Job properties windows is greyed out. The path is valid as we can copy the path and paste it at the run command and view the log.
Does anyone know how this problem can be resolved? If we select to log the results to a table; we have access to the corresponding view button but not the one for the file system logging.
We rely heavily on this feature since we used it often under SQL 2K. Can anyone provide any helpful details to resolve this or has anyone seen this problem before???
Any helpful replies would be highly appreciated.
Thanks!

Hey,
I'm looking for a good way to rewrite my T-SQL code with 'bcp' to SSIS package, any help would be greatly appreciated?
I have table1 contain account numbers and output-filename for each account,
I need to join table2 and table3 to get data for each account in table1, and then export as a txt file.
Here is my code using bcp (bulk copy)
DECLARE @RowCnt int,
@TotalRows int,
@AccountNumber char(11),
@sql varchar(8000),
@date char(10),
@ArchPath varchar(500)
SET @RowCnt = 1
SET @date = CONVERT(CHAR(10),GETDATE(),110)
SET @ArchPath = '\D$EDATAWorkFoldersSendSendData'
SELECT @TotalRows = count(*) FROM table1
--select @ArchPath
WHILE (@RowCnt <= @TotalRows)
BEGIN
SELECT @AccountNumber = AccountNumber, @output_filename FROM table1 WHERE Identity_Number = @RowCnt
--PRINT @AccountNumber --test
SELECT @sql = N'bcp "SELECT h.HeaderText, d.RECORD FROM table2 d INNER JOIN table3 h ON d.HeaderID = h.HeaderID WHERE d.ccountNumber = '''
+ @AccountNumber+'''" queryout "'+@ArchPath+ @output_filename + '.txt" -T -c'
--PRINT @sql
EXEC master..xp_cmdshell @sql
SELECT @RowCnt = @RowCnt + 1

Hi
This should be incredibly simple and easy, but I can't find any examples of how to do this.
I just want to make a File System Task move a file, and have the destination be filename + date and time. For example \serversharefilename02072007.txt
What syntax do I use in a variable to make this work?
Thanks

In my SSIS Package, I have to write my [FileHeaderRecord] row, then my [BatchHeaderRecord] row, then my details. How can I do this in a SQL Server Query? When I try my SSIS, my file looks like so..
FHTEST 00000208262015 BH000208262015
I want my BH, Batch Header data, to appear on a new row in the file.Do I have to build a dynamic query to do this?Is there any trick in SSIS to do something like this?I did try creating separate Data Flow Tasks to Query the [FileHeaderRecord] and then use a Flat File Destination and then another Data Flow Task to Query the [BatchHeaderRecord] and use a Flat File Destination again NOT overwriting the file.

I am transferring data from an OLEDB source to a Flat File Destination and I want the column width for all of the output columns to 30 (max width amongst the columns selected), but that is not refected in the Fixed Width Flat File that got created. The outputcolumnwidth seems to be the same as the inputcolumnwidth. Is there any other setting that I am possibly missing or is this a possible defect?
Any inputs will be appreciated.

sample file name:
Unique identifier + query output + systemdate();
The expression is looking like this.
@[User::FilePath] + @[User::FileName] + ".CSV"
-- user filepath is a variable from ssis package. File name is the output from SQL query. using script task i have assigned the values to @[User::FileName] .
When I debugged the script task the value getting properly but same variable am using for Flafile destination. but its not working.

Hi all!
My question is quite simple I think... I am directing the result of my query to an output file my problem is how to set the rowsize of my output file to more than 256 (that is the default maximum)? My query result is quite long per row (assuming one column) in query anlyzer, I can easily adjust the result to more than 256 but the result in the output file is truncated because the ouput is more than 256 characters per row...how can I set (in the code) the length of the row of the result in the output file... thanks for the help... this is quite urgent...

I'm using SQL Server 2005 / 9.0.3042
I'm not new to sql server, but making my first experience with xml in sql server 2005.
I have a query like this (based on <Table> with neccessary data):
SELECT TAG, PARENT, <columns...>
FROM <Table>
FOR XML EXPLICIT
This query creates a xml file exactly as i need it when i execute it in Management Studio. Well, with one exception. It does not write the <xml...> tag at the beginning of the xml file. But i'm sure i get that in there somewho else. What i need to do now is get that output to a file on disk. And that's where my problem starts.
I tried SQLCMD within Management Studio, but that doesn't accept the ':XML ON' tag and ignores it. the resulting file written is not usable, as it also contains query summary information.
Any direction would be greatly appreciated!

Hi, All
I have a header row and a footer row and a bunch of detail data I have managed to split up into temp db tables, know i need to know what would I need to do to write the header , detail data and footer to the same file after all my validations have completed , this would be a different file then the one I originally imported all the data from (append to text delimited file).
Idealy I would only like to change the header and footer from the original file.
Any ideas - I am thinking of writing a application that does this for me and just executing it from
SSIS but I would really like to stick with standard SSIS components first before starting to write my own stuff.
Thanx in advance
