Can Reference A Column In A View
Aug 14, 2014how can i reference a column in a view.
My duplicate check runs against the entire column. There might be another test field that has the same value, and that might be valid, so im trying to make sure that when i do the check, i am checking only against the serial number field and not all test fields.

I have a ranking system where I wish to update the ranking every time a result is reported. Performance is no issue what-so-ever. More specifically, two players are to devide their points after each series of games to reflect the fraction of over-all games that each player have won.
I've written the trigger below, but Visual Web Developer 2005 Express (SQL Server 2005 Express) complains about the references to the 'inserted'-table.
I find it very difficult to transform the code below to something that looks like the examples found in documentation.
Could someone get me started in the right direction?

Does A View Refresh Itself When I Reference It? (was Question On Views)
Feb 24, 2006guys, ive never worked with Views before so forgive me.
i know how to create one, and that it creates a virtual table in memory, but i've got one small question.
if i create a view:
CREATE view dbo.myView
as
select Distinct FirstName,LastName from SomeTable
When ever i reference that view, such as
Select FirstName,LastName
from myView
where LastName like 'Jo%'
does that View Refresh itself??
in other words does it run each time i Reference it??? or is it static from when i created it.
Wouldnt it be easier just to use a #TempTable or some other Table thats used to hold a few values?

I created an application role in a database (DB1) and gave it all the rights on a view in DB1 which refers to a table located in another db (DB2). I also gave the rights to the app role on a table of DB1
I tried to use this app. role through the sp_setapprole launched by a user (server principal?) which is SQL Server administrator (and local administrator (Win 2003 Server)).
With the following query
SELECT USER_NAME()
I see that the approle is being used.
Than, if I query the table on DB1 everything works, but if I query the view, referring a table in db2 I get following error:
The server principal "NameOfServerPrincipal" is not able to access the database "DB2" under the current security context.
What should I do to make it work?
The table in DB2 has the same schema of the view in DB1 which refers to it.
I put the DB1 TrustWorthy and both the database have the db_chaining option activated.
Any idea on how to solve the problem would be widely appreciated.

Aug 6, 2014Just encountered something that I wasn't expected, in that a user who has an explicit deny on a column in a table was able to select it when referenced through a view in a schema they have the SELECT permission on. This seems to me to go against the principle that DENY overrides everything when it comes to permissions? Is this how it's meant to work?

I need a trigger to be fired when a Connection ([sys].[dm_exec_connections] .[connection_id]) drops.
Is it principally impossible to create a trigger on a system view or is it just a lack on permissions making my SQL fail?
Is there any other way for surveying wether a connection is alive or not, without polling?

just started to write my first trigger for a view. Of course I got some errors, which I could could resolve except one.
Whenever I run my script I do get the following message:

Problem Creating TRIGGER On A VIEW

I have a problem that definitely has me stumped.
I have a view that looks at data in a different database. Some of the fields in the view are updateable and some are not. I am trying to create a trigger against the view that will allow me to audit the updates into an audit table. I am having problems when trying to execute the CREATE TRIGGER statement.
I keep getting the message...

Where vwDC_DocInfo is the name of the view.
Does anyone have any idea why I might be getting this error? The VIEW definitely does exist and I am executing the script in the same database as the view.

Mar 11, 2015I have a view made up of a few base tables and another view. I have created an INSTEAD OF trigger on this view, but it doesn't seem to fire whenever a new record shows in the view. The purpose of the trigger is to insert a sister record in a table whenever a new record shown in the view. Here's the catch, the table that the trigger is supposed to insert into is not a base table within the view and the view is not an updatable view. My question is... Do INSTEAD OF triggers only affect the base table(s) within the view and does the view itself have to be an updatable view?

I created a View...the view looks at four seperate tables.
Next, I created an Instead of Update trigger on that view. It works fine...for a regular UPDATE...SET.
However, it throws an error when I try an update and self join based on that view:

UPDATE is not allowed because the statement updates view "Taxroll..Taxroll" which participates in a join and has an INSTEAD OF UPDATE trigger.
There are a few caveats:
First, I thought the join issue was in the view itself. I re-created the view using no joins...all subqueries and still get the error. Second, I re-created the Instead of Update Trigger with no joins, and still get the error.

Nested Trigger Error When Doing A Select On View?
Jan 9, 2013In a SQL db we have we get the following error when just doing a simple select query against the view. Msg 217, Level 16, State 1...Maximum stored procedure, function, trigger, or view nesting level exceeded (limit 32).
No changes have been made to triggers or stored procedures recently and all was good prior to that.I understand that if my triggers loop this error will occur. But the select query does not fire any triggers functions or any other items. and the select worked with no issues last week.

My trigger works when I do an update/insert directly to the view, but it doesn't seem to fire when an insert/update is made to any of the tables that the view is based on. Is there a way to have the trigger fire when something happens to the tables that the view is based on? The application that the database is using is something that was purchased so I don't have access to the code to change any SQL statements that it's using.

Today for example, I wantedto modify a function that was being called by a trigger. The problemis that I don't want to change the function, for fear that it is beingcalled by one of the other SP's or triggers in the database (there arehundreds of them)Essentially, I need a tool that allows me to view where functions andsp's are being referenced from. At the very least, I'd like to performa "full text search" in the database objects, so that let's say I havea function named "fn_doSomething", I can search the schema for thisstring and get all the places where it appears.As you can see, I'm in the dark here. I've never worked on a systemwhere all business rules are at the database level. Apr 21, 2015I have a situation where I have Table A, Table B.
View C is created by joining table A and table B.
I have written a instead of trigger D on view C.
I do not insert/update/delete on the view directly.
For every insert/update in table A /B the values should get insert/update in the view respectively. This insert/update on view should invoke the trigger.
And I am unable to see this trigger work on the view if any insert/update occurs on base table level.
Trigger is working only if any operation is done directly on the view.
