Viewing Transactions In SQL Server 2005 Express
Aug 22, 2006
Hello,
I'm trying to follow some sql sentences that my system send to SQL 2005
express and I don't have a deep knowlegde of databases. I know that
there's a transactions log that keeps all sentences that go into
database motor. Is it correct? in case yes, is there a way to look at
this archived sentences?
Thanks in advance

I need to live update my SQL-Server 2000 database from AS400 database.
I usually use Access 2002 database between the AS400 database and the SQL-Server 2000 database to reflect any live update.
I use the (Link Tables...) option when creating a new table in access and link it with the ODBC to connect with the AS400 database.
After that I work with the Access link table.
Is there any tool in SQL-Server 2000 to show the live transactions in AS400 databasee so I can work on it?
Please advise

I have built the reports that I need using Visual Studio and the SQL 2005 Reporting Server, but now I need a way to view the reports via a web browser.
I am not much of a web/programming expert, so any help that could walk me through the process of publishing the .rdl files that I have created via a web browser would be much, much appreciated. Again, I am a novice in the the web arena, so the more straight forward the steps the better.
Thanks!

We still have some Legacy 2000 DTS packages running on our 2005 Server. The DTS packages have been configed to save the logs on the 2005 SQL server. We can manually look at the logs in 'msdb.dbo.sysdtspackagelog' and 'msdb.dbo.sysdtssteplog' table but I am looking for some GUI tools so our tech support can view the package logs without writting a query.
In 2000 Enterprise Manager, you can right click on a DTS package and select 'Package Log...' and then a nice GUI window will show up for you to browse through all the dts logs. I just can't find this tool in 2005 Server Management Studio for Legacy DTS packages. If I right click on a Legacy DTS package, all the option I get are 'Open, Migrate, Export, Delete, Rename, Refresh'... Since the log tables are still the same, I am wondering if there is anyway I can use that 2000 DTS log viewer in 2005?
Thanks.

When I installed VS 2005, it installed the default version of SQL Server 2005 Express that ships with Visual Studio 2005 installer media.
How can apply SQL Server 2005 Express SP1 to update this existing instance?
Currently, if I run this query:
SELECT @@version
I get the following:
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 - 9.00.1399.06 (Intel X86) Oct 14 2005 00:33:37 Copyright (c) 1988-2005 Microsoft Corporation Express Edition on Windows NT 5.1 (Build 2600: Service Pack 2)
After applying SP1, I should get 9.00.2047.00.
Should I just go to this link and download & install the SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP1:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/sql/download/
Thank you,
Bashman

Hello guys!
I am working with SQL Server 2005 a few months, and i need your help about transactions topic.
In first, i hope you are patient with my english, i will try to explain it the best i can ;-)) and now... my question and thanks you in advance.
I am trying to set the transaction option of a foreach loop container task in run time using the Expressions option. There, I have configured the transaction option of this task with a variable value (var type int) and this variable is informed at the beginning of my dts using a script task (values: 0 for Not Supported, 1 for Supported, 2 for Required).
The problem is the transaction option gets the variable value but... the variable value by default. After, during the dts execution, the variable gets the new value but not the transaction option.
In summary, my question is ... is it possible to set the transaction option during the run time?.
Thanks for your help!
Chris.

I have a million plus line program that uses DAO and JET/Access databases. We are modifying the code so that it will work with BOTH JET and SQL Server databases with an eye to moving to just SQL Server eventually.
Much of the code works just fine without change when using DAO and SQL server as 90+ percent of the code is accessing data READ-ONLY. (Jet's ODBC capability is used)
There are however some transactions that will not work.
When I examine the SQL Trace, I notice that after the transaction has begun, the SPID has changed. This happens often when cursors are used, BUT happens even if the only activity after a DBEngine.BeginTrans is issued DO NOT USE CURSORS as in the following code:
DBEngine.BeginTrans
strSQL = "INSERT INTO [TestTable] (MyKey,MyData, MyData2) VALUES (1,'apple','fruit')"
DB1.Execute strSQL
strSQL = "UPDATE [TestTable] SET [MyData] = 'apple2' WHERE [MyKey] = 1"
DB1.Execute strSQL
DBEngine.Committrans
The second DB1.Execute times out: [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver]Timeout expired
The trace shows a new SPID is opened when the UPDATE query is executed. A new SPID is spawned and the JET engine is sending an SELECT SQL to get the value for the MyKey:
SELECT "dbo"."TestTable"."MyKey" FROM "dbo"."TestTable" WHERE ("MyKey" = 1 )
The second SQL statement is waiting for the first one that is being done in a transaction to be completed. The program is expecting that both of these will be being done on the SAME SPID or at least the same transaction scope.
So, since I have no way of knowing how and when a new SPID will be spawned using DAO, we are not going to use it for when we do transactions.
I have tried to use ADO (Provider=SQLOLEDB.1), but ADO has the same problems as DAO as far as a new SPID being spawned in some circumstances, but it works in more situations than DAO.
The Connection Object is not guaranteed to be attached to a specific SPID - it can change at will. So Cn.Execute done twice in succession may be done on separate SPIDs.
My question is this: Is there a way to make sure that no new SPID is spawned?, Is there a way to know when a new SPID will be spawned so we can know how to avoid this situation? Is there a better way than using ADO? Keep in mind that this program has to be able to use BOTH Access/Jet databases and SQL server.
Note:
I have spent over 160 hours reading about Jet, the VB Guide to SQL Server, searching MSDN, Google etc. No article really does justice to this subject of transactions using DAO, ADO and SQL Server and the issue of the SPIDs (equivalent to a session and the session is the scope of the transaction). If you could be sure to stay on the same SPID, then you could just issue your own SQL Begin Transaction and control it all if you only plan on doing SQL statements without the need for cursors. A Microsoft article on this subject would be really helpful to all the programmers that are just now getting around to migrating to SQL Server.
Also, note, that if we did not do transactions, then we would not have to modify a single line of our code to make it work with SQL Server.
There is virtually no documentation for much of what I have written about in this Thread. I am very surprised as it seems this would have come up for thousands of programmers. I must be missing something, so thank you in advance for your help.

Hi,
I'm trying to learn some VB programming with the VB 2005 Express Absolute Beginner Series video tutorials (which I think is great) and have come across a problem that I can't solve.
When I follow the instructions in Lesson 9 (Databinding Data to User Interface Controls) my application will display the data from the database correctly and I can edit it (and as long as the debugger is running the data remains changed). However, the changes won't propagate back to the database. I don't get any error messages but after I edit the data, save (with the save button on the BindingNavigator toolbar), and end debugging the data in my database remains unchanged. When I use a MessageBox to show how many rows where edited/updated in the
Me.myTableTableAdapter.Update(Me.myDatabaseDataSet.myTable)
I get the correct number back. I'm sure the problem is not due to coding errors since I've also tried running the accompanying Lesson 9 project file that can be downloaded from MSDN and the problem persists.
I'm using Windows XP SP2, SQL Server 2005 Express Edition and VB 2005 Express Edition. I've tried installing SQL Server 2005 Express with a number of different settings, including default settings, but it doesn't make any difference.
Would greatly appreciate any feedback on this as I'm keen to resolve this problem so I can get on with the next tutorial lesson.
Thanks,
Ieyasu

i) How do I include image files into this column [Picture]?
ii) How do I get this image to display on Visual Basic 2005 Express form, so that when a product is selected the product image is displayed accordingly?

Hi,
I have an reporting services (SSRS 2005) installed locally and I am trying to access it locally through : http://localhost/reportserver, but all I get back is this page.
localhost/ReportServer - /
Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services Version 9.00.3054.00
Also when I try to connect to reporting services through SSMS I get the following error message.
Cannot Connect to Server ServerNameSQL2005
Unable to connect to the remove server (Microsoft.SQLServer.Management.UI.RSClient)
No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it(System).
About my set up, I have SQL Server 2005 (SP2) installed in a named instance called SQL2005, I have reporting services set up to run under local system and I have gone through the RS config tool and everything in there appears to be correct. U double checked in IIS that the report server folder is "ReportServer" and not "ReportServer$SQL2005". I have set up full read write permissions to all the virtual directories, to my domain account which is also a local administrator. The user logs in under windows authentication (marked in the directory security tab in IIS, for the virtual directory & the default website).
Whenever I start the service however I get the following errors in the windows application log:
Report Server (SQL2005) cannot create the trace log C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.3Reporting ServicesLogFilesReportServer__05_15_2008_10_27_52.log.
&
Report Manager cannot create the trace log C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.3Reporting ServicesLogFilesReportServerWebApp__05_15_2008_10_27_07.log.
Also I am unable to deploy my SSRS 2005 project from BI studio with more errors, I get the following exception thrown in a windows. (I am trying to deploy to the root "ReportServer" folder, not a sub folder.
A connection could not be made to the report server http://localhost/reportserver.
System.Web.Services.Protocols.SoapException: Server was unable to process request ---> System.InvalidOperationException: Unable to generate a temporary class (result=1)
error: CS2001 "Source File "C:WindowsTempc-zsc7th.0.cs" could not be found.....
I don't have sharepoint installed, I do have the dashboard designer for Performance Point Server 2007 installed though.
I have been on this thing for hours, I have tried appending "$SQL2005" on to the end, stopping and starting RS Service multiple times. Change all the permssions in IIS so that the user can full control over the IIS virutal directory. I am at a loss at what else I could try.
Any Idea's?
Thanks!!

Hi all,
For the first time, I want to set up the configuration of my SQL Server Management Studio Express (SSMSE) to allow me in doing the non-User-Instance/ADO.NET 2.0 programming from my VB 2005 Express. The SSMSE and VB 2005 Express are in my Windows XP Pro PC that is part of our NT 4 LAN System in our office. I read the article "How to configure SQL Server 2005 to allow remotre connections" in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914277/ about (i) "Enable remote connections for SQL Server 2005 Express", (ii) Enable the SQL Server Browser service", (iii) Create exception in Windows Firewall, and (iv) Create an exception for the SQL Server Browser service in Windows Firewall. I entered the SQL Server Surface Area Configuration and I could not decide what options I should take for doing the non-User-Instance/ADO.NET 2.0 programming from my VB 2005 Express. I have the following questions on the page of "Minimize SQL Server 2005 Surface Area":
(1) I saw "Configure Surface Area for localhost [change computer]". I clicked on [change computer] and I saw the
following: Select Computer
The Surface Area Configuration of this surface area of this computer or a remote computer.
Specify a computer to configure: O Local computer
O Remote computer
Should I choose the "Local computer" or the "Remote computer" option?
(2) Below the "Configure Surface Area for localhost [change computer]",
I clicked on "Surface Area Configuration for Service and Connections", Select a component and then configure its services and connections: |-| SQLEXPRESS
|-| Database Engine
Service
I picked => Remote Connection
On the right-hand side, there are: O Local connections only
O Local and remorte connections
O Using TCP/IP
O Using named pipes only
O Using both TCP/IP and named pipes
Should I choose O Local and remorte connections and O Using named pipes only?
Please help and tell me what options I should choose in (1) and (2).
Thanks in advance,
Scott Chang

Everything was working fine. I have been able to connect using windows authentication. Then, I went into the ODBC manager to add a data source and it failed to connect so I went back into the Server management studio to modify users. After doing this I now get an error when I try to conenct the management studio to the SQL server.
I wasn't modifying the login for my windows account that I normally use, I was modifying a different one, however I now get the message "An error has occured while establishing a connection to the SQL server. This kind of problem can ocure because the default behavior of the server does not support all connection methods" blah blah.
Does anyone know how I can attach to the server? Or, do I need to somehow remove the server and create a new one? How would I do that?
Thanks in advance for any input.

Hi all,
In my office computer network system (LAN), my Windows XP Pro PC has SQL Server Express and VB 2005 Express installed and I was granted to have the Administrator priviledge to access SQL Server Express. I tried to create a SQLCLR project in my terminal PC.
1) I tried to set up a remote connection to SQL Server Express in the following way: SQL Server EXpress => SQL Server Surface Area Configuration. In the Surface Area Configuration for Service and Connection - local, I clicked on Remote Connection of Database Engine, SQLEXPRESS and I had a "dot" on "Local and remote connections" and "Using TCP/IP only". Then I clicked on "Apply" and "OK" buttons. Then I went to restart my database engine in SQL Server Management. When I went to check SQL Server 2005 Surface Area Configuration, I saw the arrow is pointing to "Service", not to "Remote Connections"!!!??? Is it right/normal? Please comment on this matter and tell me how I can have "Remote Connecton" on after I selected it.
2) After I restarted the database engine (I guess!!), I executed the following project code (copied from a book) in my VB 2005 Express:

Downloading and installing VS 2008 Express also created a Miscrosoft SQL Server folder. How do I install the SQL Server 2005 Express? The following is what I found from the HELP menu bar of the VS 2008 Express. Where can I find the sqlexpr.exe?
TIA,Jeffrey
To install SQL Server Express To begin installation, double-click sqlexpr.exe. Note: SQL Server Express is available as a self-extracting executable file (sqlexpr.exe) from both the Visual Studio 2005 CD and the SQL Server Express Web site. SQLEXPR.EXE installs on x86-based computers and to the 32-bit subsystem (WOW64). For more information, see Hardware and Software Requirements (SQL Server Express)

Hi,
I had some issues on my server and had to uninstall .Net Framework 2.0, SQL Server 2005 Express, and SQL Express Toolkit. I installed SQL Server 2005 Express and it seemed to be ok.
Then my problems all started when I tried to install SQL Express Toolkit because I needed to install DTS Wizard again, and it errors out and wouldn't let me install it. So I uninstalled everything that's listed above again.
I then tried to install SQL Server 2005 Express again, and on the second from last screen, while its listing all the components and configuring them, I get the following error as it's configuring the last component... which was the SQL Server Database Services.
TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Setup
-----------------------------------------------------------
The SQL Server service failed to start. For more information, see the SQL Server Books Online topics, "How to: View SQL Server 2005 Setup Log Files" and "Starting SQL Server Manually."
I tried to re-install the SQL Server Express another 7 times wth no luck.
If anyone can point me in the right direction I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks,
Bill

On my home machine without permanent network connections enabled, I cannot get the Management Studio connect to the database server. Always get this error:
Cannot connect ot MPLIAMSQLEXPRESS
Additional Information:
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, erro: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)(Microsoft SQL Server)
I have used the SQL Surface Area Configuration Tool to reset the defaults to allow remote connections, stopped and restarted the server, but still get the same message.
Please help.

This is a question about the movie collection starter So here it is:
I am running Vista RC1 (Build 5600) and vb express 2005
I downloaded and install SQL Server Express 2005 Edition SP2 - Since SQL Server Express 2005 Edition SP1 does not work with Vista
But when I try to run the collection app or if I try to download and install the Amazon version I get the following error message:
There was a problem loading data: An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be cause by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)
I need any advice you can give me to solve this problem, how to change the default settings, because I do not know where to start.
Thanks

Hi all,
In the last one and half years, I used the Northwind Database in SQL Server Management Studio Express (SSMSE) to learn the programming of SqlConnections, Data sources, Database Exploere, ADO.NET 2.0, etc. via VB 2005 Express.
The Northwind Database in my SSMSE got lost very often, but I was not aware of it. How can I know where the Northwind Database is used or processed by my VB 2005 Express projects that were the examples of some tutorial books or my trial projects? How can I release the Northwind Database back to my SSMSE from the VB 2005 Express projects? Please help and advise.
Thanks in advance,
Scott Chang
