How To Migrate Data From Sybase Views Into Tables

Oct 8, 2015

Is it possible to get SQL Server Migration Assistant to read data from a Sybase view and store it in a SQL table.  My problem is that I have a legacy sybase application that is being decomissioned and I have been asked to migrate the data into SQL Server.  The problem I have is that:

The account I have been provided to connect to the Sybase database does not have select privileges on all the tablesI don't have the sa password for the Sybase database to alter the security. The vendor support contract has expired and it does not appear I have any way to get the sa password

The account I've been given has access to query data in several views even though it does not have access to the underlying tables that the view pulls data from.  Since this is a legacy application whose data is now static, I wonder if it's possible to read the data from the Sybase views and dump it into SQL tables.

Foreign Key Pointing To Two Tables. Is This Possible?

Jan 4, 2008

Hi guys, i have a little question, i hope you can back me up please.

I have this tables:

Code:

TV
IdTV - autoincremental int, Primary key
IdCamera - int, foreign key
DeviceType int

Code:

DayLightCamera
IdDayLightCamera - autoincremental int, Primary key
DayLightCameraName - varchar(30)

Code:

InfraredCamera
IdInfraredCamera - autoincremental int, Primary key
InfraredCameraName - varchar(30)

now, when in insert a row in "TV" the foreign key "IdCamera" will relate to a row in either "InfraredCamera" or in "DaylightCamera" depending on the "DeviceType" value.

in other words, if i insert a row with DeviceType=0, then IdCamera will have to point to a row in the "InfraredCamera" table. And if i insert a row with DeviceType=1, then IdCamera will have to point to a row in the "DaylightCamera" table.

so, my question is, how can i make the constraints relationship so that the idCamera relates to a row in DaylightCamera or in InfraredCamera depending on the value of DeviceType? should i make 2 foreign keys with allow null? or should i place both relationships to the same foreign key? im not sure what to do

Thanks guys for your help. it is really appreciated!

Re-pointing Stored Procedures

Jan 19, 2005

How do I "point" a set of stored procedures to operate on different linked servers?

In other words, I have the following linked servers:

DatabaseA
DatabaseB
DatabaseC
DatabaseD
...and in the future, there may be added additional linked servers.

All the linked servers have identical schema, but they contain unique data--each linked server represents a company.

I have a database which will contain stored procedures which I will want to operate against these linked servers. How can I "redirect" my stored procedures to operate against a chosen linked server?

If these were not linked servers, but SQL Server databases, I'd be able to replicate the same stored procedures in each database. Then, when I called a stored procedure, it would act against the data in that database. But these aren't SQL Server databases, so that idea is out.

Unfortunately, the USE command cannot be used within a stored procedure, and even if you could, I can't get it to respond to a database name given as a variable. That idea is out.

The only alternative I have left is to use the string catenation facility of the EXECUTE command. Unfortunately, with 100s of complex queries, setting that up is going to be a nightmare.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Pointing My New .ADP File To My New SQL Server DB

Oct 25, 2005

I hope this question belongs in this forum.

I have a .ADP application (access 2000 front end, SQL Server 2000 back end)
I basically want to create a new .ADP file and point it to a different SQL Server 2000 Database.

I've copied the current SQL Server DB and recreated it. Same for the .ADP file, but it is currently pointing to the old Db, where do I go to have it point to the new SQL Server DB?

Thanks

Pointing Server Name / Instance Name At AG Listener?

Jul 3, 2015

I've started working at an organization that has a sql 2005 cluster with a named instances on it, lets call it Instance1. What they done is to create a dns alias for servername that is the same as the instance name, so when you connect to the sql server you connect "Instance1Instance1".

We want to move to SQL 2014 cluster with AlwaysOn Availability Groups doing the HA/DR, the question is if I create a listener name called "Listener1" is there a way to using DNS or anything else to point "Instance1Instance1" to "Listener1"

SQL Server Admin 2014 :: DNS Pointing To A Listener

Jun 25, 2014

In our environment applications are using a DNS name which points to the physical server ip address. Now we are planning to move to 2014. We are planning to have servers in different subnets so we will be having two ip adresses for listener. How we can point the DNS to the listener ips? If failover happens can the DNS point to the exact ip address of the listener where it's primary node?

WMI Event Watcher - Pointing Directly To A Machine Name

Nov 27, 2006

Hi,

I am using a WMI Event Watcher task to watch for files dropped into a directory over a network drive.

It seems to work fine when it is pointed to a physical drive name, but not when I use a machine name.

I.e.

This works -
SELECT * FROM __InstanceCreationEvent WITHIN 10 WHERE TargetInstance ISA "CIM_DirectoryContainsFile" and TargetInstance.GroupComponent= "Win32_Directory.Name="C:\\temp\\folder1\\folder2\folder3""

This fails -
SELECT * FROM __InstanceCreationEvent WITHIN 10 WHERE TargetInstance ISA "CIM_DirectoryContainsFile" and TargetInstance.GroupComponent= "Win32_Directory.Name=\\\\machineName\\folder1\\folder2\\folder3"

The failing code does not throw any errors (i.e. SSIS thinks the WQL syntax is correct), but it doesn't pick up any dropped files.

Am I doing something incorrect with the syntax, or must I use a physically mapped drive letter?

Thanks
H

How to "CREATE credentials pointing to SQL SERVER logins" and "creating proxys for SQL server agent pointing to SQL SERVER login.

As The SQL server login does not display in the CHECK NAMES list when we are trying to select the identity but All the other Windows logins display correctly in this list .

So using the SQLserver login fails to run a SQL server Job (which uses the credentials and proxies pionting to SQL server logins)

Cyclical Reference Problem With 2 On Delete Cascades Pointing To Same Table.

Apr 13, 2007

I am not sure if this is necessarily a simple question, but I'm somewhat new to SQL so I thought maybe there's an obvious answer I just don't know about.

The problem is that I have one "master" table, and a child table that has two foreign key references back to that master table. Both of these foreign key constraints are marked as "on delete cascade" with the intention that should a row from the master table be deleted, any rows that reference that object in EITHER foreign key field should be deleted.

I am wondering why this causes a cycle. It seems logical enough to me, it just involves two passes of the table, one for each affected column.

Thanks,
Logan

Are Embedded Views (Views Within Views...) Evil And If So Why?

Apr 3, 2006

Fellow database developers,I would like to draw on your experience with views. I have a databasethat includes many views. Sometimes, views contains other views, andthose views in turn may contain views. In fact, I have some views inmy database that are a product of nested views of up to 6 levels deep! The reason we did this was.1. Object-oriented in nature. Makes it easy to work with them.2. Changing an underlying view (adding new fields, removing etc),automatically the higher up views inherit this new information. Thismake maintenance very easy.3. These nested views are only ever used for the reporting side of ourapplication, not for the day-to-day database use by the application. We use Crystal Reports and Crystal is smart enough (can't believe Ijust said that about Crystal) to only pull back the fields that arebeing accessed by the report. In other words, Crystal will issue aSelect field1, field2, field3 from ReportingView Where .... eventhough "ReportingView" contains a long list of fields.Problems I can see.1. Parent views generally use "Select * From childview". This meansthat we have to execute a "sp_refreshview" command against all viewswhenever child views are altered.2. Parent views return a lot of information that isn't necessarilyused.3. Makes it harder to track down exactly where the information iscoming from. You have to drill right through to the child view to seethe raw table joins etc.Does anyone have any comments on this database design? I would love tohear your opinions and tales from the trenches.Best regards,Rod.

Problem:long Running Validation When Pointing OLEDB Source To A View.

Jan 24, 2007

One of our developers has written a view which will execute completely (returns ~38,000 rows) in approx 1 min out of SQLMS (results start at 20 sec and completes by 1:10 consistently).

However, if he adds a data flow task in SSIS, adds an OLEDB Data Source and selects Data Access Mode to "Table or view" and then selects the same view, it is consistently taking over 30 minutes (at which point we've been killing it). I can see the activity in the Activity Monitor, it is doing a SELECT * from that view and is runnable the whole time.

If we modify the view to SELECT TOP 10, it returns in a short time.

Has anyone run into this problem? Any suggestions? It is very problematic, as if the views change we have to hack around this problem.

Thanks for any responses.

Jeff

SSIS Check Pointing - Is It Possible To Override The Point At Which The Package Restarts On Custom Condition

Jan 17, 2007

I have created a package that use SSIS check pointing for failure-retry mechanism. I knew that when this package fails, on restarting the package it starts from the task where it got failed.
Is it possible for me to override this on a custom condition and start the package at an earlier task where it executed successfully?
Ex:
Check pointing is enabled.
FTP task è Write to Staging Table è Write to Target table.
Assuming I am downloading XML file through FTP and writing to a table.

FTP Download is successful.

Read from XML file and write to Staging table task failed because of downloaded file is not a well formed XML.

Here, FTP task is completed successfully; it failed only in the second task. When I re-run the package; it starts from the second [Read from XML file and write to staging table] task because of check pointing.

Is it possible for me to restart from the FTP task on a custom condition where it executed successfully?

Recompiling Views That Reference Other Views

Jun 28, 2007

Hello.

Newbie here. I've only been using SQL for about a year now and have some minor questions about sql objects that reference other objects.

We have some views which reference other views in the joins. I will call one the primary view and the one being referenced in the joins as the secondary view.

Recently we made changes to the secondary view.

After which the primary views which referenced it would not work because of this change and had to be 'refreshed' by using drop/create scripts which essentially just dropped it and recreated the exact same view. I do not recall the exact error message that was returned other than it seemed to suggest that it could no longer see the secondary view since it had been changed. Nothing in the primary view was changed in any way, just the secondary.

Some here where I work have suggested off hand that this was a recompile of the primary view because the contents of the secondary changed.

My questions are:

1. Exactly why did this happen and is there a proper name for it when it does?

2. The same problem does not seem to occur when we have stored procedures referencing views in the joins which had just been changed. Why is that?

Thanks for any help on the matter. I greatly appreciate it.

Views Dependent On Other Views

Mar 14, 2006

Hello There,I'm trying to create a view that has calculations dependent oncalculations, where the problem resides is that each time I make acalculation I must create an intermediate view so I can reference aprevious calculation.for example lets say I have my_table that has columns a & b. now I wanta view that has a & b, c = a + b, and d = c + 1.this is grossly simplified, the calculations I actually use are fairlycomplex and copying / pasting them is out of the question.so what I have is my_view_a which makes column c, and my my_view_finalwhich makes column d (however, in my real application I have 5 of theseviews, a/b/c/d/e/)is there anyway I can consolidate all these views into one? I wasthinking of using a stored procedure with temp tables or somethingalong those lines.I just which I can use the aliases that I create for c in d in onestep.any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Sybase And MSSQL

Apr 20, 2004

Hi Everyone -

I have a master database (sybase) that is in place as a company
legacy server -

I am setting up a web server to act as an intranet and data entry
terminal system.

I want to ultimately remove sybase from the picture, but
for now, i need to grab information from the sybase server
and populate the MSSQL database with the values from the
sybase database.

So my question is this -

Is there a way to setup a "auto polling" or synching between the MSSQL
and the sybase system.

If there isn't then i will need to do a DTS job to grab the values from
the sybase ODBC connection, and populate my database that way -
but there must be another way to accomplish this task.

thanks

take care

SQL 2000 Vs Sybase On NT

Dec 13, 2000

We plan to convert our current OLTP intensive application from Sybase on NT to SQL 2000.
Which one is the winner in terms of performance. I was told that SQL Server has less tools
to tune the database especially for OLTP intensive database.

Have you done any test comparing the performance between Sybase and SQL server?
What is your opinion on this? Do you know any good third party tools to tune SQL 2000?

MS SQL Server Vs Sybase

Mar 18, 2003

Hello,

We have Trading Applications (Equities & Portfolio written on C++) on MS SQL Server 2000. Now the management is deciding to move it on Sybase 12.5. We currently don't have any issues on any matter, but because everyone is SYbase fan here, thinks applications are critical and we need to move to Sybase. Can anyone who has worked on both knows the major pros & cons of both the system. Actually I wanted these systems to be on MS SQL Server. I need solid reasons except being cheaper than Sybase to show why we should use MS SQL Server

If anyone can share their experiences, it would be really great.
