Visual C# And SQL Server Express
Sep 10, 2007
I wrote an application on my home machine using Visual Studio and SQL Server. The application runs fine. This application needed to be installed on a server for a company.
I copied the executable and the library files to the company server. The Machine is a Windows 2003 Small Business Server with SQL Server engine installed already. So I installed SQL Server Express to be able to use the Engine and build my database on the server.
When I ran the executable it would not connect to the server even though I changed the settings in the connection string to the sql server on the SBS Server.
I installed Visual C# Express on the machine to debug the application and I can not get the data source to connect to the SQL Server.
I get the following error
SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified
any help will be extremely appreciated. thank you

I've downloaded and installed both of these (VWD installs both) and have been trying to run through the walkthrough of setting up a web application which supports membership. However, no matter what I do I invariably get errors like the following:
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: -1)
I'm concerned why VWD and VSQL express versions don't run correctly out of the box (so to speak). I'm not an expert on configuring these services -- but that's the point of offering these tools to hobbyists: So we can learn about how to make some of these great applications using MS tools.
My configuration::
Windows XP SP2 -- clean machine as of about a month ago, never had any dev tools, web servers, or the like on it.
IIS is installed and the service says its running
VSQL and VWD express versions installed (no errors on installation)
SQL server service indicates it is running
.Net 2.0 framework installed (no errors on installation)
Note: I've tried installing on two separate machines. Obviously I'm missing something fundamental.
Would someone please help me go through the million things I [apparently] need to do to configure all these tools so I can get on to actually coding up my first web application? If this is documented somewhere, all I can say is I tried to find it but it certainly wasn't obvious.

When I downloaded/started using Visual Web Developer I was under the impression that I needed to install SQL Server Management Studio Express in order to create/manage databases, and to provide the engine to access the data.
Since then I have found tutorials and have successfully created/used databases solely from within Visual Web Developer. I'm assuming that Visual Web Developer includes a database engine, much like the webserver that is included. (This is an awesome thing).
When I tried to upload my web application with database to my production server, the database would not work, it started working after I installed SQL Server Management Studio Express on the server.
Is it my understanding that you need SQL Server Management Studio Express if you do not have Visual Web Developer Express installed in order to provide the data access engine?
Also, I am unable to "attach" my Visual Web Developer Express created database to SQL Server Management Studio Express. Are there any posts that provide more information about this topic?
The only reason I'm asking is that I have extra whitespace on the end of my text fields, and I thought ANSI_PADDING was turned on. I do not see the option in Visual Web Developer Express, but have found it in SQL Server Management Studio Express.

I have an Excel add-in that connects to a SQL Server Express 2005database. I've decided to create a configuration piece for this add-inin Visual Studio 2005 Express. I added a data connection using the dataconnection wizard and all appeared to go well. Anyways when I attemptto open SQL Server Express to administer the database, it was corruptedand I had to restore it.I eventually got it to work correctly (I'm pretty sure I followedpretty much the same steps as before), but I was just wondering ifanyone had experienced problems like this? I find it a bit scary thatit may be that easy to corrupt the database by just creating a dataconnection.

I am new to this type of programming and and have read all articles on adding an image to the database and it seems they all use sql queries to add an image but I want to add an image at design time. I am using Visual Basic 2005. I am also using Visual Basic 2005 Express Edition to try the same thing. I am trying to build a Translator program for english to Brazilian Portuguese and the reason I want to add the images is so that when I translate the word cat from english to Portuguese, I can also show an image of a cat. I have installed Visual Web Developer Express and its companion SQL Server 2005 Express in my Windows XP Professional box.
Now I want to create a database using Visual Web Developer. I opened the Database Explorer and right clicked on Data Connections icon but what I am seeing is an inactive "Create new database" command.
How can I make it active ? How to create a database using my Visual Web Developer?

Hi. I hate to be a noob, but I'm having great difficulty trying to set up a datasource in my client app. The only choices I see in the 'connect to database' dialogs are file-based, not connection-based.
Should I not see an option for SQL Native Client ?
How can I configure SQL Client on a Client Machine ? (no server)
How can I configure the ports and addresses used by .NET SQL CLIENT FOR SQL SERVER ?
Why can I connect to the database via TCP when using the management studio but not when using the visual IDE C# ?
Thanx.

Hi Guys,
I created a Product database table using Visual Basic 2005 Express and SQL Server 2005 Express. I have just added a new column [Picture] to the database table, which of course, should store an image or picture of a product. I am writing to kindly ask you guys for help .
i) How do I include image files into this column [Picture]?
ii) How do I get this image to display on Visual Basic 2005 Express form, so that when a product is selected the product image is displayed accordingly?
Your help much appreciated. Thanks.

They say that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing again and again while expecting a different outcome.
I must be going insane.
To top it off, the first time I tried to enter this message the post failed.
I installed visual studio 2005 and SQL express in the spring and began working with them. Life was good. I got distracted for several months and when I went back in I saw the 2008 beta 2 versions of VS and VWD. I uninstalled everything and installed the new versions, but kept having problems with missing links in the help files. I am a newbie, so the help files were important to me so I decided to go back to the old versions.
I deleted everything again, used the MSI cleanup utility to make sure everything was deleted and tried to reinstall the 2005 versions. At one point I got SQL server installed, but had to use a different (besides SQLexpress) instance name and was unable to link it with VWD. I have repeatedly uninstalled and reinstalled (maybe a dozen times) while trying various means of deleting file contents and under the programs/apdata and Microsoft SQL directories and in various sequences to no avail. The latest message is below along with the end of the log file.
Does anyone know a good hosting vendor for the visual studio authoring environment? (just half kidding)
Thanks for any help ... bill

I've installed SQL server 2005 Express and set up a database called StockData. I'm running the following code in a visual C# windows app to test the connection:
System.Data.Sql.SqlDataSourceEnumerator instance = System.Data.Sql.SqlDataSourceEnumerator.Instance;
DataTable tblSource = instance.GetDataSources();
string strSource = tblSource.Rows[0][0].ToString() + "/" + tblSource.Rows[0][1].ToString();
SqlConnection sqlConn = new SqlConnection();
sqlConn.ConnectionString = "Data Source=(local);Initial Catalog=StockData;Integrated Security=true";
sqlConn.Open();
I have verified that the SQLEXPRESS service is up and running. The strSource variable shows the machine and SQLEXPRESS instance name when I step through, so I know that the application is recognizing the service. But when I get to the "sqlConn.Open()" line, I get the following error message:
Message="An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)"
Source=".Net SqlClient Data Provider"
ErrorCode=-2146232060
Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong here? This is driving me nuts. Thanks.

I'm attempting to connect to my SQL Server Express instance through Visual Studio 2003. When I go to Data Connections, I choose the Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server, then fill in all the parameters for my server (server name, username, password, database). When I click "Test Connection" it goes through successfully. When I click "Ok" to create the Data Connection, it fails saying that the username and password should be checked. I changed the username and password to the "sa" account I created when I installed SQL Server Express, and got the same successful connection test, but failure when it tries to create the connection. Any suggestions? Thanks!

I have had visual C# Express edition for a while, and had successfully used SQL Server 2005 express successfully since it was first released. I downloaded the new version with advanced services, created a new instance, and tried to use it. VC# wont connect cause it is still trying to connect to my old instance which no longer exists. Could someone please tell me how to make my new instance the one to log on to?
Thanks in advance,
Kent

When I installed VS 2005, it installed the default version of SQL Server 2005 Express that ships with Visual Studio 2005 installer media.
How can apply SQL Server 2005 Express SP1 to update this existing instance?
Currently, if I run this query:
SELECT @@version
I get the following:
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 - 9.00.1399.06 (Intel X86) Oct 14 2005 00:33:37 Copyright (c) 1988-2005 Microsoft Corporation Express Edition on Windows NT 5.1 (Build 2600: Service Pack 2)
After applying SP1, I should get 9.00.2047.00.
Should I just go to this link and download & install the SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP1:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/sql/download/
Thank you,
Bashman

Hi,
I want to make a component library in Visual Basic.NET and connect to a remote Sql Server. When I create a new DataSet with the wizard, I can only connect to a .mdf file, but not to a Sql Server. With Visual Web Developer I can connect to a Sql server. What is the difference between these enviroments ? How can I do the same with Visual Basic.NET ?
Thanks in advance.

I can access an SQL Server 2005 database from VWD, but for ease of uploading to a server and to maintain the database within just VWD environment would like to import it directly into VWD and its App_Data folder from the local machine SQL Server.
I guess this is more than copy and paste ('especially since this is not allowed becase the database is being used by another program').
I've seen posts about the reverse process but not this way. Any simple pointers please?

I'm developing using Visual Web Developer and want to have a web page that shows the contents of a table. I get the error message when testing the connection through database explorer "Login failed for user ''. The user is not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection".
The database is located on a server running IIS and has SQL Server Express installed.

It can also be caused by the role manager feature not being enabled. Click the button below to be redirected to a page where you can choose a new data store. The following message may help in diagnosing the problem: Unable to connect to SQL Server database. I see that a lot of people get this problem. Can someone sugest a way out?Thnaks in advancePati2005

Alright I'm using Visual Studio 2005 with SP1 and SQL Server Express 2005. I've downloaded all the updates on Windows Update. I'm joining a project late and trying to get the C#/SQL web-app up and running. My project manager has it built with Visual Studio 2005 pro and a full blown corporate license for the SQL server, but I don't have access to the SQL server quite yet.
When I try to open the "LLRCWEB.sln" file I receive the following error:
"The application for project 'C:Documents and Settings......LLRCSQL.dbp' is not installed.
Make sure the application for the project type (.dbp) is installed."
Has anyone encountered this problem before? Are there any plug-ins or particular application versions you know are required to handle '.dbp' files, or will I have to Install Visual Studio 2005 Pro and get access to the SQL server?
Any input would be greatly appreciated

I already have SQL Server Express 2005 installed from having Visual Studio 2005 installed. How can I tell if it is the SP2 edition? It probably isn't, so my next question is what is going to happen when I install Visual Studio 2008, which I will be doing in a day or two...will the install overwrite SQL Server Express 2005 with the latest edition to SP2, assuming that the latest edition will be on the Visual Studio 2008 installation discs? I have not yet used SQL Server Express, so my knowledge level with it is very weak. What I'm hoping to find out with this question is what I'll have (with respect to SQL Server Express) and the install of Visual Studio 2008. I can't even figure out how to tell what version of SQL Server Express that I now have.

I successfully installed .NET framework v 3.5 and VWD 2008 on a new Vista laptop. When I want to add a Sql Server database to a website, errors tell me to install SS 2005 Express. MSDN SS 2005 Express download tells me I MUST first install .NET framework v 2.0 before SS 2005. When I try to install framework v 2.0, I'm sent to v. 3.5 and no way to download SS 2005.
How does one install a express sql server to run with Visual Web Developer 2008?

I have been experiencing troubles since I was decided to install SQL Server Expr 2005 in my PC, first I needed to remove the .NET framework 1.1 in my computer because it is suggested before installing sql server expr 2k5 that cause my vs.net 2003 to stop loading because sql express runs in .NET framework 2.0 and vs.net 2003 is in .Net Framework 1.1 then what I did is to install .Net Framework 1.1 in my PC together with .Net Framework 2.0 and my vs.net started runnning again.
My problem now is when I try to connect to a database using Data Link Properties in the Server Explorer it says "[DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen](Connect()).]Sql server does not exist or access denied." how could this happen if I can see the sql server in the Server Explorer in my VS.net environment?
Please somebody help me I am just learning to this language and I think I cannot proceed to the next few chapters remaining because of this.
Thank you very much!

I would occasionally get the error below when trying to access a database in my project/App_Data folder using Visual Web Developer Express 2008.
I would re-boot and the problem would go away.
I now have the problem all the time and am unable to access my database file in the App_Data folder nor ASPNETDB.mdf.
I am not trying to access a remote database. I have not knowingly changed any settings.
Has anyone seen this problem?
Can anyone help?
Thanks,
Charles Smith
