Sql Server has many data types.
For Example:
smallint
Integer data from -2^15 (-32,768) through 2^15 - 1 (32,767). Storage size is 2 bytes.
I want to know that
If it contains like 0 or 100 or 1000 or -200 or -2000 or more or less.
What will its actual size?
2 bytes or change with the value.
Please also mention the reference with your answer. if available.

Here is my code:
Dim oParameter As New System.Data.SqlServerCe.SqlCeParameter("@pMyParameter", SqlDbType.Binary, 3000)
If you set a watch on this object, the size is set back to 510. I have tried resetting the size back to 3000 after construction using oParameter.Size, but it doesn't change from 510. If the command is executed using ExecNonQuery, this causes the bytes to get cut off at 510 bytes and returns the error: Byte array truncation to a length of 510.
Can I insert data into SQL Server 2005 Mobile Edition, into a field of data type binary(3000) using .NET CF 2.0 via SqlServerCe objects?
Thanks for any help.

Hi,
Im trying to create a VERY wide table, with 1,000 columns of type varchar(MAX), nullable.
The CREATE TABLE statement (both in SQL 2005 & 2008), gives the following warning:
Warning: The table "WIDE_TABLE" has been created, but its maximum row size exceeds the allowed maximum of 8060 bytes. INSERT or UPDATE to this table will fail if the resulting row exceeds the size limit.
When I insert data into the table, filling all columns with small, 10-byte string values, I get the following error:
Msg 50000, Level 16, State 1, Procedure sp_pivot, Line 118
Cannot create a row of size 15034 which is greater than the allowable maximum of 8060.
Id like to verify this observation: each row is created with 2000 bytes of offset data (2 byte * 1000 columns), 125 bytes for null bitmap (1000 columns / 8 bits) and some more wasted? row information. This leaves less than 6K for the data itself. But since not all columns can fit within the page, forwarding pointers in the row need to be created, 24 byte per column, which very quickly add up to more than 8K, thus the error. So the 8K limit is met for much less columns than the max 1024 column restriction.
Furthermore, in SQL 2008, SPARSE columns will not solve the problem (maybe save some metadata? space in case the columns are null, but if not, Im with the same problem again, or even worse, since now each value takes more storage space. The max 30,000 columns in 2008 is only for cases where the column values are really sparseŚ
Is this the right observation? if so, is there a workaround besides splitting to multiple tables?
Thanks,
Aviv.

I have some code I build 2 weeks ago which Iâve been running daily but itâs suddenly stopped working with the following error.
âThe table "tbl_Intraday_Tmp" has been created, but its maximum row size exceeds the allowed maximum of 8060 bytes. INSERT or UPDATE to this table will fail if the resulting row exceeds the size limitâ When I google this there seems to be a related to tables with vast numbers of columns.
My table tbl_Intraday_tmp is relatively small. It has 7 columns. 1 of varchar(5), 3 of decimal(9,3) and 2 of decimal(18,0). The bit Iâm puzzled with is it was working and stopped.
I donât recall changing anything but I wouldnât rule that out. I âve inspected the source files and I donât believe they have changed either.
DECLARE Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
@FileName varchar(50),
@Path varchar(50),
@SqlCmd varchar(1000)
= '',
@ASXCode varchar(5),
@Offset decimal(18,0),

Is there any method to find out the size of an image datatype currently in the database. For example I have 2 tables that contain the same image, but the archive table is not displaying the same as the main. I am thinking the image file was corrupted somehow but don't know how to check this out.
Any ideas?

I have a database which is centered around two date tables (approx. 5.5 million records each). We are finally making the big leap from SQL Server 2005 to 2012. The data is currently stored as datetime, and we are hoping to take advantage of the new date datatype, since the time component is not needed.
The first table has 13 different date columns. In testing on the 2012 server I have changed 3 columns so far, and have seen that changing the datatype to date is actually increasing the Index size and not affecting the data size. Only 3 of the columns are associated with indexes, and modifying a non-indexed column still increased the index size. I am running the Disk Usage by Table report to view the sizes.

Hi, I'm specify the size of the interger dataypes in my code behind files; e.g.
commad.Parameters.Add("@SomeID", SqlDbType.Int, 4)
I know it may seem silly, but I have to ask:
Will specifying ths size (i.e. 4) eventually stop the auto-icnrement of the underlying primary key SomeID in the SQL Server 2005 database?
What restriction, if any, does this place if the next SomeID value is 10000, which is 5 digits? or 999999, which is 6 digits?
Thank you

For example:
I have a Patient table. When two patient records getting inserted by two different transactions does it trigger the triggers in different threads and execute the code in Insert trigger Or only one row will fire the trigger and the other one won't?

I see this question a lot, so I thought I would go ahead and post the answer here.
Q: How many connections does SQL Server Express support?
A: Unlike MSDE, SQL Server Express does not limit connections. SQL Server Express supports:
1 gb RAM (note the machine can have more memory, but 1gb will be used by SQL Express)
1 processor (again, the machine can have more, but just 1 proc will be used by SQL Express)
4 gb database size (note, there can be multiple databases, but none of them individually can be more than 4 gb)
Hope this helps,
Thanks< MJ

I've searched the forum and saw that this question has been asked several times. However, none of the responses point to any documentation about this limit. We've got different groups bickering over this ("There is no limit!" "Yes there is!" "No there isn't!") and it would help to have a link on the MSDN or a response from Microsoft to this question to put this to rest once and for all. Also, if there is a limit, is that per Sql Server instance or per physical server?
Secondly, we currently have over 400 catalogs. We've noticed it takes 4-5 minutes for new data to show up in search results. Does the number of catalogs affect performance, or is it the amount of data, irrespective of catalog count?
Thanks

Good afternoon,
I have an issue with an ssis variable datatype.
The scenario is as follows:
I have a stored procedure:
PROCEDURE [dbo].[sp_newTransaction]
@sourceSystem varchar(50),
@txOut NUMERIC(18,0) OUTPUT
AS
insert into scn_transaction (sourceSystemName) values(@sourceSystem);
SELECT @txOut = @@identity
Whose purpose is to perform an insert into a table and return me the identity value of the inserted record, which I'll then use throughout the rest of my package. The identity column in the inserted table is numeric(18,0).
I execute the stored proc with the following sql with an OLE DB connection manager:
exec sp_newTransaction ?, ?
The first parameter is a string variable from earlier in the package, and the second is the output parameter. I have the following parameter mappings to the execute sql task:
User:ystxId output numeric 1 -1
User:ourceSys input varchar 0 -1
The proc is correctly called, and the row insesrted, however I get a type conversion error when SSIS attempts to map the return parameter to my package variable... I've tried all sorts of combonations, and can't seem to get it to execute.
At one point I wasn't returning a numeric, but rather an int from the stored proc, and all was well until I went to use the variable in a derived column later in the package, and the type was converted quite incorrectly (a 1 was 77799789080 or some such), indicating a type conversion error likely related to the encoding of the number.
I'd like to keep the datatypes as numeric and make ssis use those - any pointers are greatly appreciated as to what type my package variable should be to allow proper assignment of a sql server numeric type to it.
Thanks much,
B

Hi,
I used to write the data in a database throught the component. Few days it worked fine and suddenly one day it showed the database is suspect and the file size is 0 bytes but actually is should have written lots of data.
But i have the datafile which shows zero bytes and when i try to attach it it gives an error:
Server: Msg 823, Level 24, State 6, Line 1
I/O error 38(Reached the end of the file.) detected during read at offset 0000000000000000 in file 'D:EorderdatabasePritamdbeorderpritamdb_Data.mdf'.
Connection Broken
Can anyone tell y is this. And it would be really if anyone can tell how to recover the data. The only thing which i have now is the data file which shows zero bytes.
Thanks.
