Web App Runs Fine When Using Web Developer Express, But, Won't Run From Browser
Sep 13, 2006
Herre is my connection string:
<add
name="PageEngine"
connectionString="Data Source=MyServerSQLEXPRESS;Initial Catalog=PageEngine;Integrated Security=True;User ID=MyID;Password=MyPwd;"
providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"/>
When I run the app using WDE (Web Developer Express), Everything works fine. I can access and diplay data from the database with no problems. However, when I try to run it from a browser on the local machine or a remote machine it fails to create a datareader. I am using the Database factory from Enterprise Library.
IDataReader dr = pe.DataReaderFromStoredProcedure("pe_GetApplicationInformation", null, "PageEngine");
if (dr.Read() != false) (* this is the line it fails on every time)
{
_ApplicationName = dr["ApplicationName"].ToString();
_Version = dr["Version"].ToString();
_Copyright = dr["Copyright"].ToString();
_Owner = dr["Owner"].ToString();
}
dr.Close();
Here is the "DataReaderFromStoredProcedure" method
public IDataReader DataReaderFromStoredProcedure(string spName, peParameters parameters, string connection)
{
Database db;
if (connection != null)
db = DatabaseFactory.CreateDatabase(connection);
else
db = DatabaseFactory.CreateDatabase();
DbCommand dbCommand = db.GetStoredProcCommand(spName);
dbCommand.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure;
Here is the error message I get:Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

I have an SSIS package created from a SQL 2000 DTS using the Migration Wizard. The package imports data from a MySQL database to a SQL 2005 64-bit database running on 64-bit windows server 2003. The package runs fine when executed from SQL Server Management Studio but when I schedule it as a job it fails with:
Executed as user: [the domain admin account]. The package execution failed. The step failed.
I've tried a lot of different ways to make this work including creating a new SSIS package. Again, the package ran fine except when it was scheduled as a job.
Any ideas would be appreciated.
thanks!

I am able to select the average, max, etc of the variable in a simple select statement but when I do the following, it doesn't work. The reason I am doing the following is because I am calculating the average and such over a 5 min interval, then saving the output as one line. That is why I condense average, max, min, and stdev into one variable which I then output. why it won't run when I have it like this but will run when it is like this?
will run:
SELECT AVG(NacTemp), MAX(NacTemp),MIN(NacTemp), STDEV(NacTemp)
FROM [DATABASE]
WHERE [UTCDeviceTimeStamp] between DATEADD(minute, -5, GETUTCDATE()) and GETUTCDATE()
won't run but I need it to:
DECLARE @now datetime SET @now = GETUTCDATE() --Universal Time
DECLARE @timeint int SET @timeint = '5' --time interval in minutes
DECLARE @time datetimeSET @time = (SELECT MIN([UTCDeviceTimeStamp]) FROM [DATABASE] WHERE [UTCDeviceTimeStamp] BETWEEN DATEADD(minute, -@timeint,@now) AND @now) -- Timestamp data will be saved as
DECLARE @comma varchar(4) SET @comma = ', '
[Code] ....

I have a 7 step SSIS package that manipulates some data on a DB2 database. The package executes perfectly in Business Intelligence Development Studio. I save the package to my SSIS store and then point my scheduled task to it and it fails after about 9 seconds everytime. I have an identical job that works with a different DB2 database that works without any problem. The only difference is the database it's pointing to.
The package is executing as the same user who created it, which has sysadmin to both the SSIS store and the SQL instance the package is executing on. When I saved the package I selected "Rely on server storage roles for access control" for the protection level.
This one is driving me crazy, can't figure it out. Any idea's?

I have created an SSIS package which, as its 2nd step, picks up a .dbf table and does a Data Flow Task of putting the .dbf table into a SQL Server 2005 table (which was just truncated in Step 1).
The Connection Manager that works on the .dbf table is Native OLE DBMicrosoft Jet 4.0 OLE DB Provider.
The entire SSIS package runs perfectly when i run it from my development environment.
I then assigned this Package to a SQL Server 2005 Job. The entire package is the sole step of the job.
But when I run the SQL Job, the Job fails immediately on Step 2.
Here is the error message in View History of the SQL Job:

Could someone suggest why this works OK within SSIS but not when the SSIS Pakcage is called from SQL?

I have created a lot of reports using this technique, but this is the first one that doesn't work. As there is absolutely nothing special about it, I can't figure out what the issue is.
I have one dataset that uses parameters chosen from two other dataset results. One dataset result runs just fine and returns values in reporting services, but the other returns blank in reporting services. In Visual Studio, both datasets return data.
I cannot for the life of me figure out what I've done that gives this result as I've never encountered it before and use this method of parametization quite frequently.
The dataset in question doesn't even join any tables, it's a direct select distinct field"1" from table"a".
I'm running SQL2005, SP2.
Thanks for any advice.

I'm at a bit of a loss. I've written a package that has about a dozen data flow tasks and each one loads data from text files into tables in a db. It's possible that some of the fields in the text files may have data that would need to be truncated upon insert into the db.
In the data flows, I've set the fields in the data sources I know this could happen to to ignore truncation errors. When I run this within BI Studio, everything works fine. I then loaded the package into the SSIS store on the db server and if I attempt to run it from the SSIS store or if a job executes it, the package appears to be failing because of these truncation errors that I've told it to ignore.
Am I missing something? Thanks!

Running eval. edition of Sql Server Standard 2005. "Insufficient product level" error is thrown during validation phase of an OleDBCommand data flow task. This task type is not licensed in Sql Server 2005 standard? The component runs a very simple sql update statement against a one row table in Sql Server 2005.
If it works from BIDS, should it not work from dtexec.exe on the same box?
Does dtexec run under the security context of the logged in user?
Thanks,

There is one SP with parameters varchar, int, varchar and int. It runs perfect in SSMS. Now, I've moved into a Execute SQL task with four IN parameters. In parameter mapping, data type is varchar, long, varchar, long and parameter name is 0,1,2,3. It worked before which is great. Today, I opened this pkg for another testing but failed with the following error:failed with the following error: "Incorrect syntax near ';'.". Possible failure reasons: Problems with the query, "ResultSet" property not set correctly,parameters not set correctly, or connection not established correctly.
I know SP is fine as tested in SSMS. I could not understand where it could go wrong in the ssis package. Currently using Reporting Service 2000; Visual Studio .NET 2003; Visual Source Safe SSIS 2008 SSAS 2008, SVN --

I have an SSIS package that runs fine through command pormpt although when I try to run it from a SQL Servr Agent Job CmdExec step it bombs out. Please help this has me stumped...the SSIS package uses an XML connection string so certain key settings such as connection strings and email info can be changed easily. Currently this is all on the same machine. I have not moved it beyond where I am developing.
On the command line I am using the following command...
dtexec /F "S:connectionscontacts.dtsConfig" /DE "password"
Below is the output log...

I am attempting to write a Windows service that watches a database for uploaded files to import. When a new file is found, the corresponding SSIS package is run from the file system with variables passed through. I started development as a Windows app and copied the functionality to a service.
The app runs fine. The service does not. I get a "Failure" each time a package is executed. Everything is identical behind the scenes with the obvious exceptions that OnStart and OnStop handlers are buttons in the app. I added a script task at the beginning of one of the SSIS packages to notify me that it is even running at all. It doesn't even hit that initial task.
Again, the app will run all packages just fine. The data is imported and the results return as "Success."
The following is the code executing the package. Any help is appreciated. I've been banging my head on this one for a few days now. (Is there a tag to format a code sample?)
Dim pkgLocation As String
Dim pkg As New Package
Dim app As New Application
Dim pkgResults As DTSExecResult
pkgLocation = sPackageFolder & PackageName & ".dtsx"
pkg = app.LoadPackage(pkgLocation, Nothing)
Dim vars As Variables = pkg.Variables
vars("ImportId").Value = ImportId
vars("ProductionServer").Value = ProductionServer
vars("ProductionDatabase").Value = ProductionDatabase
vars("SourceFileName").Value = FileName
vars("SourceFilePath").Value = FilePath
pkgResults = pkg.Execute()

I can't tell if the SQL Developer install upgraded the service, but left the SqlExpress version information, or if I'm still really only using SqlExpress.
Also, my intended target is SQL Enterprise, so if I am using SQL Express am I asking for trouble when I go to move the database over? Are the database formats compatible?
I've poked around trying to search for this answer for a while and haven't turned anything up. Maybe I'm searching on the wrong terms...
Thanks,
Geoff

Hey, I've a few jobs which call SSIS packages. If I run the SSIS package, it runs fine but if I try to run the job which calls this package, it fails. Can someone help me troubleshoot this issue? None of my jobs that call an SSIS package work. All of them fail.
Thank you
Tej

Hi all,
i installed two servers, one instance SERVER05 and second SQL SERVER EXPRESS called SQLEXPRESS.
my SQL Server Browser service is in state "Change Pending" i dont know if it is ok?
I setup SERVER05:
TCP/IP in Conf Manager Enabled, listen all yes, and IPAll TCP Dyn. ports nothing = blank, TCP PORT 2001
i think that SERVER05 is listening on port 2001 now.
i restart SERVER05 and try this command:
SQLCMD -E -S MACHINEASERVER05,2001
connect successful
I want to do this with SQLEXPRESS
i set TCP enabled, Listel all, Dyn port blank, TCP PORT 2002 restart and get error:
Unable to start service MSSQL$SQLEXPRESS on server MACHINEA
Additional information
The MSSQL$SQLEXPRESS service on MACHINEA started and then stopped. (ObjectExplorer)
Can u help where is problem?
Thnx for help.

Hi All,
I am using SQL Server Express to connect to the network using VPN on a local machine. I have done the following..
a.) Enabled the remote connections for the Express Instance and rebooted the machine.
b.) Connected to the machine with Express Edition locally and can also connect other SQL Server instances from it to verify connectivity.
c.) Yes, SQL Browser Service is running.
d.) Firewall is not turned on, so I do not have to configure any exceptions.
Now here is the big problem: When I browse for SQL Servers on the network the machine does not show up on the list, i.e "macinenameSQLExpress". I had uninstalled and reinstalled the Express edition and rebooted the machine several times with no luck on the SQL Express Instance showing up on the browser list. I even changed the default instance name to "machinenameMACHINE1" on one of the reinstalls. However, I can connect to other SQL Instances from it. But, I cannot connect to it from other machines since its not registered on the network. I have been working on this for the past few days by looking for a solution via this and other forumns. Is there some setting somewhere that I am missing that prevents this instance from not showing up on the browser list. This issue with SQL Express Edition is baffling as well as frustrating and any ideas that can resolve this issue is very much appreciated.

When I downloaded/started using Visual Web Developer I was under the impression that I needed to install SQL Server Management Studio Express in order to create/manage databases, and to provide the engine to access the data.
Since then I have found tutorials and have successfully created/used databases solely from within Visual Web Developer. I'm assuming that Visual Web Developer includes a database engine, much like the webserver that is included. (This is an awesome thing).
When I tried to upload my web application with database to my production server, the database would not work, it started working after I installed SQL Server Management Studio Express on the server.
Is it my understanding that you need SQL Server Management Studio Express if you do not have Visual Web Developer Express installed in order to provide the data access engine?
Also, I am unable to "attach" my Visual Web Developer Express created database to SQL Server Management Studio Express. Are there any posts that provide more information about this topic?
The only reason I'm asking is that I have extra whitespace on the end of my text fields, and I thought ANSI_PADDING was turned on. I do not see the option in Visual Web Developer Express, but have found it in SQL Server Management Studio Express.

Hi, I'm completely new to SQL Server and ASP.NET, so please bear with me on my learning curve! I've installed Visual Web Developer Express and SQL Server Express (on the same PC). I then used Web Developer Express to successfully create a new database with a couple of tables in it. So far so good. I then installed SQL Server Management Studio Express on the same PC and tried to connect to my new database. The connection to the SQL Server instance appears to work OK (using Windows Authentication) but I can't see the database I previously created. All I can see are the System Databases. Does anyone know what the solution might be?

Can someone here confirm or deny that Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Edition doesn't work with SQL Server Developer Edition 2005?
I
was about to order SQL Server Developer Edition 2005 on Amazon, to use
with Visual Web Developer 2005 Express, when I read a user comment that
the two are incompatible with each other. Does anyone know for sure if
that is true?
What I'm wanting to do is develop an ASP.NET web
application on a web host using a SQL Server database. I use VS2003 and SQL
Server Enterprise 2000 at work, but I'd like to learn the 2005 editions
for this side project. I don't own any of the developer tools/IDEs
personally, so I'm trying to find the most affordable way to do this
for my home business.
Thanks for any advice,
Keith

I have installed Visual Web Developer Express and its companion SQL Server 2005 Express in my Windows XP Professional box.
Now I want to create a database using Visual Web Developer. I opened the Database Explorer and right clicked on Data Connections icon but what I am seeing is an inactive "Create new database" command.
How can I make it active ? How to create a database using my Visual Web Developer?

Please assist, the issue with SQL 2005 Browser and SQL 2000 Server Service is understood.
Our problem is with networked 2000 instances and SQL Express. The SQL 2000 machines (Standard & MSDE) do not have SQL 2005 or Express installed only 2000. When a SQL Express computer is put on the network with the SQL Browser service running almost all SQL 2000 machines lose sight of the other SQL 2000 instances. The second the
SQL Browser is turned off on the SQL Express box the SQL 2000 machines can see each others instances.
It appears that the response from the SQL Express SQL Browser causes the SQL 2000 machine to stop listening for responses. Once in a while one of the SQL 2000 instances will show up with the SQL Browser active on the network and it is my belief that it is because that response made it in before the SQL browser response. Please help as this does not appear to be a recognized issue. I'm assuming there aren't many sites running as many named instances on individual machines like we do.
Please note this appears to be a problem with SQL Express Browser not SQL 2005 Standard's which runs without problems on our network.
THANK YOU!

The problem can be seen in Enterprise Manager for 2000 (all service packs), Service Manager for MSDE (2000 all service packs), and OSQL (2000 all versions).
The exact problem is as follows:
In a network environment if SQL EXPRESS (problem does not occurr with 2005 Standard) is installed using defaults
SQL 2000 & MSDE machines will no longer see instances. This is a browser issue for 2000 and MSDE. For some reason the response back to the 2000 machine from the EXPRESS machine causes the 2000 machine to stop listening for reponses.
If you have a network with SQL 2000/MSDE machines that have named instances (default instance is not affected) they will lose sight of eachother when a SQL EXPRESS box is put on the network with its SQL browser service running. We have tried service pack 3a and 4 on the 2000 boxes and it does not resolve the issue. It may resolve issues with 2005 and 2000 on the same machine but this problem is with networked machines and doesn't appear to be the same issue. The SQL EXPRESS machine will be able to see all the
named instances from the 2000 boxes and the 2000 machines usually will only see the EXPRESS named instance until the EXPRESS box SQL Browser service is stopped.
No word from Microsoft so far.
DOES ANYONE HAVE A SIMILAR ENVIRONMENT AND RUN INTO A SIMILAR ISSUE?

Hello,
I have been trying to drill down to the cause for this event log message:
"The configuration of the AdminConnectionTCP protocol in the SQL instance
SQLEXPRESS is not valid."
It is reported from the SQLBrowser service as a warning when the service
starts. I have tried starting SQLBrowser.exe with -c flag, but the output reveals no
errors. I have seen this error on three computers. Two are running SQL 2000, 2005
and Express. One was only running Express, but still this message.
I then looked into the log for the SQL Express server itself. It shows this
message on startup:
"Dedicated administrator connection support was not started because it is
not available on this edition of SQL Server. This is an informational message
only. No user action is required."
Now, it appears to me that these two messages may relate to the same
"error" (or rather behaviour by design). So, can anyone confirm that the
warning in the event log from the SQL Browser service occurs becuase of that
the SQL Express edition doesn't allow any "AdminConnection", but the SQL
Browser service isn't aware of that SQL Express edition shouldn't support that, and
reports it as a warning (implying that we can't do much about this warning)?
Thanks for any input on this issue!

Performance issue.
I have a very complex Stored Procedure called by a Job that is Scheduled to run every night.
It's execution takes sometimes 1 or 2 hours and sometimes 7 hours or more.
So, if it is running for more than 4 hours I stop the Job and I run the procedure from a Query Window and it never takes more than 2 hours.
Can anyone help me identify the problem ? I want to run from the Job and not to worry about it.
Some more information:
- It is SQL 2000 Enterprise with SP4 in a Cluster (It happens the same way in any node).
- The SQL Server and SQL Agent services run using a Domain Account that have full Administrative access.
- When I connect to a Query Window I also use a Windows Account.
- There is no locks or process bloking or being blocked while the job is running.
- Using the Task Manager the processor activity is ok, no more than 30 % in any processor.
