What's The Best SQL Book For An Intermediate Level Database Programmer?

In May of this year I graduated from Penn State with a BS in IST (Information Sciences and Technology). Right after graduation I got a database programming job with a company that uses Delphi 6 and MS SQL Server 2000.
I've been working with this company for six months now but I'm still not very good with SQL. I can do basic SQL queries and table joins (as well as use datetime functions and cursors), but I'd say I'm only at an intermediate level (at best).
So... I'm looking to learn more about SQL. I'm guessing a good SQL reference book would help, but I'd really prefer a good book that actually teaches you and guides you along. The only problem is that I don't want a basic/beginner level SQL book since I already know all of the basics.
Can anybody recommend anything for me?

The problem that I am having is that with Visual Web Developer I am creating a webpage and having it directly put online, so for example when I start a new ASP.NET page, I select the location to be HTTP, with the location http://MYWEBSERVER/Website and for the language and Visual BasicI notice a couple of things, first that there is no longer a a link under the Main toolbar "Website" selection called the ASP.NET configuration. So how can I configure what I want to have users be able to do? It seems that this choice is only available if I am building the ASP.NET page on my "localhost". So that is the first problem. So I am able to get the pages to work, atleast the things such as the textboxes to show up etc, (Even things as advanced as the "Login" box). How ever when I try to get someone to try to login I am taken to a page that has an server error. The error is:
"The SSE Provider did not find the database file specified in the connection string. At the configured trust level (below High trust level), the SSE provider can not automatically create the database file. "
The Stack Trace Errors are at the bottom. I think this is happening because the automatically generated databases are not getting built online as they are on my computer. On my computer I have MSSQL express. So either the databases are not getting built for some reason, (and I think that is the case as I don't see any in the folder). So I think that somehow I have to create a database on my server, and then somehow configure the ASP.NET file, perhaps in the Web.Config file to look for that new database. Is this the correct methodology? Is there some simpler way that I can just somehow upload things as they are and have them work correctly on my server? The error says that either the Server did not find the database or that the trust level was insufficient. I don't think that is it as I just looked again and I don't see any .MDF files. So how would I go about getting this to work right? Is there a way to do this with MySQL also? So that I don't have to use MSSQL? My server only allows 1 DataBase for that.
Thanks and I hope my question makes sense. It is basically how can I get it to be able to create and check users etc. online?

I'm used to programming in PHP and need helping learning how to do SQL stuff in VB (using Visual Studio Pro, if that makes a difference).
For instance, in PHP I might do something like this:

Hello
I've been looking for SSIS examples where you need to import data from a OLE DB datasource and export it to a OLE DB destination source whilst the data in a colum is being transformed with a simple SQL statement.
For example:
SELECT (CONVERT(datetime, Left(Counterdatetime, 23))) datum
FROM CounterData
It seems to me that you have to use the Script Task Component ans start coding in Visual Basic.Net (or whatever)
Am I missing something here or is it normal you have to be a programmer to do simple thins like that?

I am writing a BI solution for a recruitment company. In their
business, the can be n number of participants from different
dimensions linked to the same fact record. For example, a client can
be sent the CV of 50 candidates. That's my first problem. My second
problem is the variety of dimension participant types for a given fact
record. This results in the need for nullable dimension FK's - which
I'm trying to avoid. For example, consider the following two business
events. In the first one, a candidate fills a job. Easy, we have a
record in the fact table where the fact table has the following
columns: DateKey, EventType, CandidateKey, VacancyKey. No nullable
columns, great. But there are other events that I want to store in
the fact table too. Let's go back to my first example: The client is
sent CV's of 50 candidates in one transaction. So there is one client
linked to the fact, but 50 candidates. So now I need to extend the
fact table and add another column: CandidateGroupKey (which links to
and Intermediate Fact Table). But in this case there was no vacancy
involved. So do I now have to make the VacancyKey column nullable?
That doesn't seem like a good idea...
Or do I have to go for a completely different approach and have
different fact tables instead of just one?
Anyone have any suggestions?

I've been working through a programming diploma the last few years and have a solid foundation in Normalization, SQL, SQL Server, MySQL, Procs, Triggers, etc. Basically I'd say I'm at least a competent junior programmer on the back-end.. able to build simple joins, update data, and research/read/understand documentation.
Right now, and at the start of the year I was in a co-op term where I got some industry level SQL experience, so I know what a legitimate database looks like, and I've seen some scary looking procs. And now I've found that I quite enjoy working in SQL land and I'd like to take my skills up a notch.
With that said, the only method I can think of to improve my SQL skills is to find a sizeable sample database to load into SQL server, hopefully with corresponding exercises, and then to code those exercises.

For MS Press Book, ADO.NET 2.0 Step by Step, 2005 Edition by Rebecco Riordan, installing the code samples created a ConfigDB.exe file
under SampleDBs folder. Running this exe file created a AdoStepByStep into the Database
folder in SQL Server 2005 Express.
However, for ASP.NET 2.0 Step by Step, 2005 Edition, by George Shepherd, there is no Config.exe to install the ASPNETDB SQL Server
2005 Express database. I right clicked the Database folder to 'Attach' the database. But,
the database just showed a 'c: ASPNETDB.MDF filfe path as a name. Further, running
the aspx files in Chapters 7 and 12 showed a 'Timeout Expired' error msg, indicating
something wrong with accessing the SQL Server database.
How can I run the aspx files in Chapters 7 and 12? How can I install the ASPNETDB?

Quick question. I am in the NYC area (Westchester) and I am using Cognos DecisionStream to build my SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Data Warehouse.
I want to learn more about complex SQL, specifically for SQL Server.
What do you reccommend? Should I go for strictly an advanced SQL course, or should I go for SQL Server training.
Does anyone know of a really good site where I can find Advanced SQL training?
Also, I want to learn more about scripting and VB. Can anyone reccommend a place where I can get this beginner training.

I read this snippet here:
Push data from the Integration Services pipeline or a custom application. The data can flow directly into an Analysis Services partition from the Integration Services package pipeline, without intermediate storage. This scenario can be used to reduce the latency (and storage cost) of analytical data.
What I think this means is that using SSIS I could bypass porting the data from ODS to DW, and instead use SSIS control flow/data flow components to direct the data straight to the Analysis Services Cube database storage partition.
I was hoping by posting this thread on this MSDN forum I could get details or links from those more knowledeable than I on this subject pointing me to how I may go about using SSIS to implement this approach. Perhaps package code examples or instructions about the components I could use to do this?

I have started working on SSAS since last week, I need to perform some calculations on the data fetched from the cube based on the parameters. SSRS is used to display the output and SSAS is used as a data source.
How i could perform the operations on the data fetched from the cube in SSAS? Does SSAS provides the storage structure like temp table in stored procedure where we can perform the various operations before sending final data back to the client side tool(SSRS)?
OR Is there any alternative way to perform the operations based on the input provided through the parameters

I'm just starting off in SSIS and have a question that I can't find an answer to...
I'm loading in a number of files (in separate Data Flows) and performing some transformations on them before merging them back together. What I'm not sure about is what I should be doing with the data at the end of each of my "Import Data From XXXX Flat File" Data Flows. Am I better off using OLE DB Destinations (or SQL Server Destinations) and saving this intermediate data to temporary tables, or am I better off using a Raw File Destinations and saving this intermediate data to files? Or is there, perhaps, a better option that I'm currently unaware of?
If the Raw File Destination is the way to go, then isn't there a maintenance issue with cleaning up all the files created? And will there not be a management issue to ensure that there is sufficient disc space available on the drive you are saving to?
I'm a bit confused and overwhelmed by SSIS at the moment, so any help would be much appreciated!

Hi!
After upgrading SQL Server from 6.5 to 7.0 my production database compatibility level is "65".
I checked that by executing sp_dbcmptlevel <database_name>.
I can change it to "70" but my question is how it's going to affect the application and do I have to change it?

I have many tables and in those i require to change some data. Sayfrom ARCA to ARCAEX. I am sure that the string is unique in the sensethere will be no ARCAABC. How do I lock entire database? I want an exclusive lock on the db by
a user
who is the dbo of that database only (not sa
user).
The
scenario is we have a web application and each week we need to do data
uploads (with etl). During this upload, the users accessing the website
should not be able to read data. This is why I want database lock.
Now
the catch here is, the application access the data using user say abc.
Abc is dbo for that database and the etl is also done by abc login. So
will db locking help in this case as the website can also read the data
being a abc user?

Hi,i created at general database level a login 'Network service' (windows server 2003).At level of 'mydb' database, i created an user 'aspnet' and i associated it to the login 'Network service'. That user 'aspnet' receives the necessary schemas (db_read /db_write) rrquired by the application.Now, i removed the login 'Network Service' at general database level (not the user 'aspnet') but the application still runs properly.My question is: is it allowed to remove a defined login at general database level (in my case the login 'Network Service')?ThanksJean

Can someone help me with the following problem:
I'm a SQL server DBA and we sell intern SQL-Server resources to the application teams based on needed storage and number of users.
I have several servers shared by different application teams.
Now I'm looking for a method to limit the number of users working together on a specified Database. Because when a project manager wants resources for 100 users I want to be sure that only 100 users can connect to that particular database at the same time.
I know I can limit the number of connections on server level but I need this on Db level too.
Can someone help me?

Testing team is performing some activities on MSSQL - 2008 R2 database ..and after completion of the test, again team wants to restore the original database ( in the same state as before starting of the testing). Currently team is taking the back-up before starting testing and restoring the backup after the testing .. Since the database size is huge, this restoration is taking more time Is there any better way of taking the database to the previous state in lesser time.

I require to compare two database structures.This is what I went for:
I generated scripts (right click on the database --> All Tasks--> Generate Scripts) for all tables in the two given databases and compared them.
The problem is that the order of the tables in the generated scripts are different. Can I control this order by any possible means?
