What's A Comfortable Max SQL 2000 Db Size?
Feb 19, 2002I see that the MS-stated max size for a SQL 2k db is about 1TB. I was curious about what peoples' actual experiences have been with SQL 2K .

Reduce The File Size Less Then Original Size In SQL 2000
Jul 25, 2007I have one db test with one .mdf and .ldf file...mdf file size is 100mb and for some reson i removed all the tablesfrom that .mdf file and transfer it into new secondary file so all thetables moved into secondary file now i want to reduce the first .mdffile from 100 mb to 50mb is that possible,it's showing 90mb is free.Please reply

And I'm getting "MODIFY FILE failed. Specified size is less than current size." I tried going into the database properties and setting the log file to 2M, but it doesn€™t keep the changes.
Any help with this process?

Nov 10, 2006Am running several databases on SQL server 2000.
Have several overnight jobs for interface and maintenance, etc.
Log file on one specific database increases in size 10 fold overnight. Unable to trace why.
I have a job to truncate the logs before the final overnight backup. Several times a week the job hangs - on nights when log file expands, so it is a pain. Able to resolve the issue after the event, but do not understand why the log file increases in size (at that time) in the first place. No other activity on the server at the time.
MS SQL 2000- Reduce Transaction Log Size
May 5, 2004The size of my transaction log file is out of control. I've backed up the database and the transaction log went from 120 GB to 120 MB. Now, I can't reduce the size of the transaction log file. It's still at 120 GB (w/ almost all of that being held as Free Space). I get errors when I try to manually reduce the file size. Any tips?

The application using thisdata works on SQL 2005 but takes no advantage of new features. The db onSQL 2000 was about 2.9GB, now on SQL 2005, it is 16.5GB. The db is set toSimple recovery so trx log is only 2mb. The mdf file is 16.5GB, ManagementStudio shows only 5mb free space. There has not been a huge increase intransactions.One of the largest tables has only added 2,000 rows since the move to SQL2005. Yet the data and index size has jumped from about 400mb to 3.5 GB. On the MS website (at this URL: http://www.microsoft.com/sql/evaluation/overview/default.asp) it says that the Standard edition of SQL Server 2000 has a database size limit of 1,048,516 terabytes.
Talking to a friend, he tells me this is not true, and that it has a database size limit of 12gb.
Is Microsofts site incorrect, or is my friend lost?

DB, not a great deal of space to back it up into.
As I do the backup, the file on the disk seems to stay at 2KB
How does the file get written? Is there a temp somewhere first?

I recently saw that the transaction log files of user dbs grow undefinitely in SQL Server 2000 - one of our customers had a 11 GB log file which totally slowed down the server.
Another customer of ours uses one of my applications logging all actions in a MSDE database file and I fear that the corresponding transaction log file will grow and block the system too - is there any way that I could shrink and set the max size of the transaction log file through SQL?
I already know the command "SHRINK FILE ('filename')" but I haven't found a SQL command to set the max size.

Transaction log reached ~6Gb before rolling back the delete stating transaction log was full. There was 42Gb free on the server and the log was set to unlimited growth.

Jun 15, 2006I installed sql 2005 a while back. Then I recently found out my file system was fat32 (I don't understand why the hardware people did this...) and I had to convert to NTFS. Naturally the sql service no longer worked so I uninstalled inorder to reinstall now I can't reinstall it I keep getting this message
native_error=5039, msg=[Microsoft][SQL Native Client][SQL Server]MODIFY FILE failed. Specified size is less than current size.

Nov 14, 2007Using C#, SQL Server 2005, ASP.NET 2, in a web app, I've tried removing the size from parameters of type NCHAR, NVARCHAR, and VARCHAR. I'd rather just send a string and let the size of the parameter in the SP truncate any extra chars if need be. Jul 23, 2005Just wanted to know what is a general rule of thumb when determining log file space against a database's data file.We allow our data file for our database to grow 10%, unlimited. A lot of records were deleted before this. Did they remain in the DB as NULL values or something ?

the problem is that the sum of all tables is not the same size when i make a full database backup.
example of this is when i run this query against my database i see a sum of 111,899 KB that they are 111MB,but when
i do full backup to that database the size of this full backup is 1.5GB,why is that and where this size come from?

We have an application with replicated environment setup on sql server 2012 . Users will have a replica on their machines and they will replicate to the master database. It has 3 subscriptions subscribed to the publications on the master db.
1) We set up a replica(which uses sql server 2012) on a machine with no sql server on it. After the initial synchronization(used replmerge tool) the mdf file has grown to 33gigs and ldf has grown to 41 gigs. I went to sql server management studion . Right click and checked the properties of the local database. over all size is around 84 gb with little empty free space available.
2) We set up a replica(which uses sql server 2012) on a machine with sql server 2008 on it. After the initial synchronization(used replmerge tool) the mdf file has grown to 49 gigs and ldf has grown to 41 gigs. I went to sql server management studio , Right click and checked the properties of the local database. over all size is around 90 gb with 16 gb free space available.
3) We set up a replica(which uses sql server 2012) on a machine with sql server 2012 on it. We have dropped the local database and recreated the local db and did the initial synchronization using replmerge tool. The mdf file has grown to 49 gigs and ldf has grown to 41 gigs. I went to sql server management studio , Right click and checked the properties of the local database. over all size is around 90 gb with 16 gb free space available.
Why it is allocating the space differently? This is effecting our initial replica set up times.
