What MS SQL Data Type Should Be Used For Storing Things Like Forum Posts ?

Mar 31, 2008

Let's say a user profile page on a website contains a description about a car that the user wants to sell. The user could try to be wise and write something very short like "buy my car" or the user could write a very lengthy description of his car to convince the buyer to make the purchase.

Or somebody creates a thread in a forum or replies to a topic (much like what we do here).

In these instances, what is the most efficient manner of storing the high-character content in these examples with SQL Server 2005? Keep in mind that a user could make a 2-character post like "OK" or could write a long reply or create a huge profile. So the data type has to be efficient and flexible. Judging from the list of available types in my Express 2005, I would guess the varchar(MAX) or the text data types could be used. Or would I use some other data type?

TIA.

Own Forum - Number Of Posts And Stars/ranges - How To Make It ???

Oct 27, 2006

So I have simple forum. At main page I have gridView which display topics. When I go to topic #5 (for example) I use repeater to display posts and authors. Here is a code: SELECT aspnet_Users.UserName, forum_posts.post_id,forum_posts.post_content, forum_posts.topic_id, forum_posts.post_date FROM aspnet_Users INNER JOIN forum_posts ON aspnet_Users.uID = forum_posts.user_id WHERE (forum_posts.topic_id = @topic_id) Now I have a problem - how can I display with each user his number of posts - eventually how can I display for example if he has 25 posts - one star, 50 posts - two stars, or maybe display "Starter" range, etc. How to make this, cause I don't have any idea.

What Data Type To Use For This Different Things

Jun 16, 2007

Hello.

I am a newbe in this and I tried to find the information on the msdn but could not find a god answer.

I am using VisualStudio Express 2005 and a SQL Server Express version.

In a Visual Basic application I use "radio buttons", "tick boxes", "Combo Boxes" and "Numeric Up Down".

But I cant figure out what data type to use to save the data in a SQL server.

It would be nice to have a document that maps the different data types to use in SQL Server according to what object you are using in the Visual Studio.

Thanks in advance.

Storing Pictures In Image Data Type

Apr 17, 2001

Hey all,

Just starting to investigate this. I need to store digital pictures in my database for use in claims and disputes. I have played a bit with the image datatype but notice that one picture takes up 1Mb as a TIFF and 3Mb as a JPEG. Does anybody work with this stuff and if you do what is the best picture format to use in regards to keeping clarity but minimizing size used in the db. Is there any load conversion routines that would shrink the size of the file.

Any suggestions or comments on this topic are appreciated.

Thx. Kelsey

Boolean Data Type Not Available (workaround For Checkbox.checked Storing?)

Sep 2, 2006

I have a page for inventory price entry that I have used for a while. Now I need to add a checkbox for whether or not the price includes shipping. I added the checkbox to the form and had it posting 'True' or 'False' to the database as nchar(10) data type. When the gridview pulls up the data, I have the Item Template like this, so it shows a disabled checkbox either checked or not: <asp:CheckBox ID="CheckBox2" runat="server" Checked='<%# Convert.ToBoolean(Eval("Shipping")) %>' Enabled="False" /> This works fine for displaying the values, but I copied the checkbox to the Edit Item Template, but did not disabled this one. At first, I didn't change the databindings, leaving it Convert.ToBoolean(Eval("Shipping")), which allowed me to go into Edit mode, change the checkbox, then click update. At which point it would return to it's original state (meaning Update wasn't actually updating). However if I change the databindings, then the page won't display. I checked the SQL statement, and sure enough, it has theUpdateCommand="UPDATE [PartsTable] ... SET [Shipping] = @Shipping... WHERE [PartID] = @original_PartIDAfter fiddling with the sql statement, now I get Object cannot be cast from DBNull to other types. I think that means that the checkbox is sending a null value to the database.Any insight as to how to get this to work is much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Which Is Better? Storing Data In The Database OR Storing It In The File System

Dec 29, 2006

Hello there,I just want to ask if storing data in dbase is much better than storing it in the file system? Because for one, i am currenlty developing my thesis which uploads a blob.doc file to a web server (currently i'm using the localhost of ASP.NET) then retrieves it from the local hostAlso i want to know if im right at this, the localhost of ASP.NET is the same as the one of a natural web server on the net? Because i'm just thinking of uploading and downloading the files from a web server. Although our thesis defense didn't require us to really upload it on the net, we were advised to use a localhost on our PC's. I'll be just using my local server Is it ok to just use a web server for storing files than a database?

2. Can you describe how the new picture of the product would be uploaded into the database.
3. How do you handle different formats that pictures come in gif, tif, jpeg,
etc.

4. How can you say that SQL server does support images well, because on
microsoft site they loaded up the satellite data of the earth into sqlserver
which is only picture data

Converting A Data Type Double To A Type Float Using A Data Adapter && SSCE 3.5

Feb 13, 2008

Hi,

I can populate a dataTable with type double (C#) of say '1055.01' however when I save these to the CE3.5 database using a float(CE3.5) I lose the decimal portion. The 'offending' code is:

this.court0TableAdapter1.Update(this.mycourtsDataSet1.Court0);

this.mycourtsDataSet1.AcceptChanges();

this.court0TableAdapter1.Fill(this.mycourtsDataSet1.Court0);

This did not happen with VS2005/CE3.01.

I have tried changing all references to decimal (or money in CE3.5) without luck.

I'm beginning to think that string may be the way to go!!!!!!!

Can someone shed some light on my problem.

Thanks,

Later:

It's necessary to update the datatable adapter as the 3.01 and 3.5 CE are not compatible.

I've tried to use cast in the following way, (rsbirthday is the field name, panelists is the table), but to no avail.

SELECT rsbirthday CAST(rsbirthday AS smalldatetime)

the error returned is "incorrect syntax near 'rsbirthday'.

Bulk Insert Task Failing On Data Type Conversion For A Destination Column Of Type Bit

Jul 6, 2006

I am trying to use the Bulk Insert Task to load from a csv file. My final column is a bit that is nullable. My file is an ID column that is int, a date column that is mm/dd/yyy, then 20 columns that are real, and a final column that is bit. I've tried various combinations of codepage and datafiletype on my task component. When I have RAW with Char, I get the error included below. If I change to RAW/Native or codepage 1252, I don't have an issue with the bit; however, errors start generating on the ID and date columns.

I have tried various data type settings on my flat file connection, too. I have tried DT_BOOL and the integer datatypes. Nothing seems to work.

I hope someone can help me work through this.

The Conversion Of Char Data Type To Smalldatetime Data Type Resulted In An Out-of-range Smalldatetime Value

Mar 30, 2007

I am using Visual Studio 2005 and SQL Express 2005. The database was converted from MS Access 2003 to SQL Express by using the upsize wizard.

I would like to store the current date & time in a column in a table. This column is a smalldatetime column called 'lastlogin'.

The code I'm using is:

Dim sqlcommand As New SqlCommand _

("UPDATE tableXYZ SET Loggedin = 'True', LastLogin = GetDate() WHERE employeeID = '" & intEmployeeID.ToString & "'", conn)

Try

conn.Open()

sqlcommand.ExecuteNonQuery()

conn.Close()

Catch ex As Exception

MessageBox.Show(ex.Message)

End Try

This code works fine on my local machine and local SQL server. However at the client side this code results in the error as mentioned in the subject of this thread. I first used 'datetime.now' instead of 'getdate()', but that caused the same error. Then I changed the code to 'getdate()', but the error still remains.

The server at the client is running Windows Server 2000 UK . My local machiine is running WIndows XP Dutch.

Maybe the conversion from Dutch to UK has something to do with it. But this should be solved by using the 'Getdate()' function..... ?

The Posts Should Not Be Older Then 2 Months In Database

Jan 28, 2008

Is it possible to send a email after a certain date has pass by. And 2 days after the email has been sent the post should be removed if the member doesn't answer the message.
example: The posts should not be older then 2 months. When they get older than 2 months the SQL-Server detects this post and sends a messegae to the member if he wants to renew it. If he ignors it for 2 days after the email the post will be removed from the database. (Some posts have images also, They should also be removed from the harddrive)
Is this possible in MSSQL-Server to send email?
If someone could tell me how to create this.

Need Help For Selecting Posts In SELECT Statment

Dec 4, 2007

I'll try to explane what I am looking for.

I'd like to select from a table, let say with 2 variables. One with a currency and one with integer. The integer value is a number between 0 and 255. The integer value represents a value of what kind of BIT is turned on in one BYTE.

Down to business.

I am looking for all BYTES with the fifth BIT = 1 as in example 00001000.This represents the value of 16. This value is an integer in my table. But as you see, the BYTE has a number of different values with the fifth=1 as the rest of the BITS can be 1 as in example 01011000 = 26.

Down to code.
Tablename = myMoney
Column Name = mCurrency; Data Type = decimal(18,2)
Column Name = bit5; Data Type = int

Code Block

SELECT sum(mCurrency)
FROM myMoney
WHERE somefunction(bit5) = 1

I have made the code in VB some time ago but this time I need to do the aclculation in the SQL server.

For some reason I can only get this query to work if I use an ADO.NET connection type. If I try to use something like the OLEDB connection I get the following error:

<ROOT><?MSSQLError HResult="0x80004005" Source="Microsoft XML Extensions to SQL Server" Description="No description provided"?></ROOT>

Can anyone tell me why the SELECT ... FOR XML PATH... seems only to work with ADO.NET connections?

Thanks

Walter
