Hi, i am new to sql server and visual basic, i need to connect my sql server database to a new application i've developed in visual basic 2005 express. Can any one tell me the steps to do this. Many Thanks.
I go to Server Explorer, right click on Data Connection, input the server name (that is, my own computer), give a new name to the database to create, and then inevitably get the error window saying:
An error occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connectiong to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL server does not allow remote connections. (Provider: Named Pipes Provider, error 40, could not open a conection to SQL Server)
So, how to open a connection to SQL server 2005? I looked in the msdn but found absolutely nothing.
Our database(s) are all over the place - no documentation - lot's ofrubbish and unused stuff.I'm managing a project focusing on data quality that covers codechanges, alterations to DTS packages, schema changes etc etc. What I'd like to do is see where the bit I want to change is beingused.that might mean what stored procs use a field and what sprocs use thatsproc.maybe it's which dts packages use a sproc (and again up thehieararchy)The list is a long one but basically I need to know what the effectsare of changes. Is there a tool out there that lets me navigate a database to thatlevel of detail - I understand something along the same lines isavailable for MS Access but I can't find it for SQL Server. Thanks
hi all, i am working on portal site where i have created 18 tables in on database, i dont know weather i am right or wrong . Thanks for spending ur valuable time for me.
Hi, I am developing an application for pocket pc 2003 smart device which utilizes synchronization between SQL CE 2005 and SQL server 2005 by means of REMOTE DATA ACCESS method call PULL( ) and PUSH( ) but currently these are the details of the error Im encountering when PULL( ) method is called:
Error code: -2147467259 Descripion: An error occured on the computer running IIS.Restart the IIS server.
Minor error: 28022 Source: SQL server CE Currently Im developing this application as a final project and due to some limitations I have setup my pc to act as the SQL server and the IIS server both on the same machine.
There are some perculiar goings on happening on my servers. Plans across servers have been doing funny things like dumping back ups in different folders, some jobs have been hanging, so on and so forth.
And I think it's occuring after modifying SQL Server 2000 plans with SSMS. It's so intermitent, it's hard to put my finger on exactly when it's happening. It may have not even been reported yet. Fixing the anomolies are achieved by recreating the jobs (a matter of unticking and ticking the boxes in the Maintenance Plans).
In SQL 2000, if you create more than 1 schedule on a job that was itself created using a maintenance plan, SQL Server returns a message along the lines of "Dude, do this and weird things might happen". The message doesn't say what exactly, just that it can no longer guarentee the integrity of the plan. And indeed, weird things does happen, I tested it once.
I'm guessing this is a similar problem, but has not yet been pinned down. Has anyone come across this when using SSMS to maintain 2000 plans.
At this stage, I would like to point out that this is not a slagging off Maintenance Plans thread... I'm looking in the direction of anyone who's name starts with the letter Kristen or Tara

I am very new to SQL Server and am just starting to look into replication as a possible solution to a problem I have. I have a local database which will be running on either MSDE or SQL Express 2005. I have a database on a webserver running SQL Server 2005 Standard which I wish to keep as an exact copy of the MSDE/Express one. If data is changed in the local db then I want the webserver db to be updated with this data, preferably as the change occurs, but it could be on an hourly schedule if required.
If data in the webserver db is altered then I do not wish for it to update the local db, but I would like it to be assumed that the change is erroneous and reset the item to whatever exists in the local db. In other words, should a table be erroneously dropped or something from the webserver db then the table would be recreated when it syncs with the local db (rather than propogating the change back to the local db and thus losing local data).
Basically I want the web db to be an exact mirror of the local db as often as possible. Given that the webserver is running SQL Server 2005 Standard and the local machine will be running either MSDE or SQL EXPRESS, is this achievable and what would be the best way of achieving it? Should I use merge replication or database mirroring? I have succeeded in getting 1-directional merge replication working by setting the webserver up as a publisher and distributor and setting up a push merge subscription on the local machine with an ExchangeType of 1. However, this won't correct the data in the web db if it is compromised until it is altered locally.
It crossed my mind that I could write a small application to utilise tablediff to compare each table in the DBs and get it to correct the web db if required on a regular basis. Would this be a silly approach?
Whenever I try to install SQLServer 2005SP2 (downloaded from Microsoft Page) there is always an error message. A recently applied update, KB921896, failed to install..
I tried downloading all the types of setup for SQLServer 2005 (x86, x64, IA) and the same error occurs.. I am using WinXP SP2, what's behind this stupid errors? I really want to start using SQL Server because i am using VWD 2008 Express. Somebody help me for this please. I need complete details. Thank You very much..
I'm having trouble doing a basic permission, I need to prevent one user from seeing one column in a view, such as a students phone number. However, when I deny the user from seeing the column it denys the user from viewing the entire view. Can someone tell me the correct way to deny the user from just the one column.
hi i have windows vista home basic.I am trying to install sql server 2005. I have two issue: 1)Its always throwing a popup window saying sql server has a know issue and do you want to continue. 2)I am not able to connect to any database engine.
I just installed SQL Server 2005 on Windows Vista Basic platform with just windows authentication, installation went pretty well, but when I tried to logon to the server, it gave me error "Logon failed with error code 18456".
I logged on as administrator, service for SQL server is started, but I can't logon. Can you please help.
I am doing a project on web usage mining of my universities server logs and im just wondering how i go about mining them in sql server 2005?
Do i mine them in one table? do i normalise the web log data? what algorithms will i use on them as im trying to get usage patterns from the users and also where most of the users come from.
I restore a backup every week. It serves a couple of purposes. One, to verify the backup and secondly, to give us a current testing/training environment. As things evolve, it would be nice to script this and then schedule it as a job.
I can write the restore statement, but it fails if any sessions are open on the db. I thought about using sp_who and the the kill statement. But I was having trouble using the recordset returned by sp_who.
Now I'm thinking the sysprocess table is a better place to look. Does anybody have some experience in this area and can point me in the right direction?
While I'm going down this path, does anybody have a script to look at the master database and dynamically manage their backup strategy? That would be super cool?!?!
I am wondering how people maintain their SQL Servers which run at several customers sites and disk space is getting smaller and smaller? I want to say that we have tables in SQL dbs which hold a lot of date consisting of statistics, errors, logs etc. They grow and grow and existing data is not needed anymore as soon as the data get older than let's say for one year. How do you overcome the problem reducing the tables but not charging the system too much as the major application also runs on the same server?
I need to maintain a record such as how many time any user (e.g, sa) connects to the sql server. Means whenever any person is connecting to the database through application or directly, then i need to know that through which sql user(e.g sa), any body connected.
HiIm trying to connect Visual Basic Express 2005 to a remote SQL Server Express 2005. I cant find how i can do that in VB.net Express. In Web developer there are no problem to connect to a remote SQL server but i cant find it in VB.net Express. The XP with the SQL server that i want to connect to is on the local network. Greatful for help!
Hi Guys, I created a Product database table using Visual Basic 2005 Express and SQL Server 2005 Express. I have just added a new column [Picture] to the database table, which of course, should store an image or picture of a product. I am writing to kindly ask you guys for help .
i) How do I include image files into this column [Picture]? ii) How do I get this image to display on Visual Basic 2005 Express form, so that when a product is selected the product image is displayed accordingly?
I would be very grateful if someone could take a look at my command line install and offer advice on if I am doing it correctly.
The reason I am asking is because I cannot seem to get the server installed without having errors during the installation: "The SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) service terminated with service-specific error 17113 (0x42D9)"
Looking at the server error log indicates that master.mdf was not in the data directory (I have however specified a different data directory for ease of backup by our software and this is created during the install but does not have this database in the data directory - it is however in the template data directory!
I also get this error when the SQL Server service is started: "The SQL Server (SQLEXPRESS) service terminated with service-specific error 3417 (0xD59)."
All advice is welcome. Please see below my batch file. Also, if you think I should do this in a different way then please let me know. I basically want to install SQL server on a customer computer and automate the install so the custoemr does not need to enter any information.
The goal of this install is: [1] Deply a custom .Net application and SQL server at the same time on the same computer without user input. [2] Allow remote .Net applications (designed by myself also) to connect over a LAN (and later maybe over a WAN) to the database to the above database.
The command line is this (I have also included the batch file I am usign below). For ease of reading I have put the parameters on a new line below:
SET MODE=/qb SET SETUP_EXE=sqlfilessetup.exe %MODE% SET SQLDATADIR=c:SqlData
SET SET_USERNAME=username="CustomerUsername" SET SET_COMPANYNAME=companyname="OurCompany" SET SET_ADDLOCAL=addlocal="SQL_Engine,SQL_Data_Files,SQL_Replication,Connectivity,SDK" SET SET_DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS=disablenetworkprotocols="0" SET SET_INSTANCENAME=instancename="MSSQLSERVER"
SET SET_INSTALLSQLDATADIR=INSTALLSQLDATADIR="%SQLDATADIR%"
SET SET_SAVESYSDB=SAVESYSDB="1" SET SET_USESYSDB=USESYSDB="%SQLDATADIR%"
SET SET_SQLAUTOSTART=SQLAUTOSTART="1" SET SET_SECURITYMODE=SECURITYMODE="SQL"
@REM === RE-INSTALL PARAMS - NOT CURRENTLY BEING USED?? SHOULD I ADD THESE ALSO? === SET SET_REINSTALLMODE=REINSTALLMODE="omus" SET SET_REINSTALL=REINSTALL="SQL_Engine,SQL_Data_Files,SQL_Replication,Connectivity,SDK" SET SET_REBUILDDATABASE=REBUILDDATABASE="1"
I am using SQL Server 7.0. We have set up a task which needs exclusive use of database 'EMS_DB' . How do I schedule a task to run kill all processes in 'EMS_DB' just before this task. Any TSQL scripts for killing all precesses for a user database?
I created this trigger on a table that i think failed while execution. I tried to modify it and run it again but it seems that i cant do that. If i try and delete the database i also cant - saying that it is still in use. But i am not using it and ther are no other users connected to it. I think the trigger has probably hit a loop and that is holding the link.
To close that i know that a solution would be to restart the SQL server instance but that would be a bit hard since the SQL server where my test database resides is a production server and has few other databases that are important and few users use them.
Is there any way through a SQL statement that there can be forced a delete? Or force close all the connections? Or force close all the processes without actually restarting the SQL server instance.
I have tried all options that were offered on some other forums like forcing it to a single user but even that operation can not be performed saying that the database is still in use.
Hi, I want to make a component library in Visual Basic.NET and connect to a remote Sql Server. When I create a new DataSet with the wizard, I can only connect to a .mdf file, but not to a Sql Server. With Visual Web Developer I can connect to a Sql server. What is the difference between these enviroments ? How can I do the same with Visual Basic.NET ? Thanks in advance.
Hello All, I’m looking for a solution to timeouts that occur when I’m executing a stored procedure from my web application. Most of the SPs will run from 3 to 15 minutes, and, unfortunately, modifying/optimizing them isn’t an option at the moment. I tried setting the CommandTimeout to 0 with no luck. Unless, I didn’t use it properly. Here’s my code: 1 2 try 3 { 4 string dbConn = ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["ConStringNTMTLDEV"].ToString(); 5 OleDbConnection connection = new OleDbConnection(dbConn); 6 7 lbl_SearchResult.Text = dbConn; 8 9 //OleDbDataAdapter adapter = new OleDbDataAdapter(); 10 OleDbCommand cmd = new OleDbCommand("SP_CallHistoryLookUp", connection); 11 cmd.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure; 12 13 cmd.Parameters.Add(new OleDbParameter("@phoneNumber", "1234567890")); 14 cmd.Parameters.Add(new OleDbParameter("@email", "123@123.com")); 15 cmd.Parameters.Add(new OleDbParameter("@WebUser", "123")); 16 connection.Open(); 17 cmd.CommandTimeout = 0; 18 cmd.ExecuteNonQuery(); 19 cmd.Dispose(); 20 connection.Close(); 21 }catch(OleDbException ex) 22 { 23 lbl_SearchResult.Text += "<br/> Something went wrong </br>"; 24 lbl_SearchResult.Text += ex.Message.ToString(); 25 } 26 27 28 Is it possible to launch a stored procedure and close the connection without waiting for a result?Would the stored procedure still run on the SQL server? I’m using MSSQL 7. Would you have any examples that would solve this problem? Thank you for your help. R.
We are facing lot of problems with Blocking, can any one help us in this matter,The problem is as follows
We have SQL Server 7.0 running on Nt4.0, and three web servers and 5 application servers are accessing SQL server. Till Yesterday everything was fine,Suddenly today more than 18 processes were blocked by other(Like chain),First i killed some blocking process, then it was fine, once again it started and continuously some processes are blocked by other, and i found that all blocking process are running from webservers.I ran SQL Profiler to get some information, but no use. I am not understanding why suddenly it happend, because we have't modified anything. Is there any way to overcome this situation, this is production server. because of this users are getting slow responce/no responce.
----Here i want to know why it happend? ---How to trace the problem and fix it
I need to know exactly what VBA lines Create and Destroy SQL ServerProcesses - i.e. those visible in Enterprise Manager under Management> Current Activity > Process Info. Why?I am experiencing strange behaviour with Processes that are createdwhen I create a DAO Database Object with the following line:Set m_ResDatabase = DBEngine.Workspaces(0).OpenDatabase(strDSN, False,False, strODBC)This creates the process as expected. However the following lines don't always close the ensuing Process:If Not m_ResRecordSet Is Nothing Thenm_ResRecordSet.CloseSet m_ResRecordSet = NothingEnd IfIf Not m_ResDatabase Is Nothing Thenm_ResDatabase.CloseSet m_ResDatabase = NothingEnd IfIf Not m_ResWorkspace Is Nothing Thenm_ResWorkspace.CloseSet m_ResWorkspace = NothingEnd IfIt seems as if SQL Server keeps hold of the first two Processes andthen will release any subsequent ones. Can anyone shed any light in this - or any good web pages where Imight find some answers?Regards Chris
Dear, Our ASP.NET scripts send SQL statements (as inline SQL or SP) to process the requested job. After the job execution, the process ID stays in the server and waits for next command with sleeping status.Since this process does not go away, next job adds another process and eventually, the server is overloaded with these processes and dies. How can I kill this sleeping processes?Regards,Echo
Wanting to know how do you detect and kill orphaned spid in SQL Server left behind by an XML service which was not completed normally. The client requests an XML service which open a connection, and due to network problem the client did not manage to call the another service which suppose to end the connection. Thus leaving behind in SQL Server orphaned spid which continue to hold locks. This created problem when the next user wants to access the resource.
The simplest way is to get all spid which are holding locks for more than a certan period and kill them. Is there a better way to actually detect orphaned spid?
I don't even know where to begin looking... I have a page that loads multiple web user controls... I know I use one connection object class that is used in all my objects when executing the query (calling Stored Procedures). The problem is when the first page is rendered and each user control queries the database (SQL Server), it eventually slows down. In my controls, I use a lot of repeaters and internal queries per each repeater item. So I know it hits the database quite often.
Problem is when I look in SQL Server Enterprise Manager Process Info, I have multiple worker processes sleeping. My first thought is ASP.net is creating a new session connection (process) to the SQL Server? Why? How? What do I do to check either my code is creating the connection object properly. Thanks!
I have a table and a specific column inside this table. I know this table is being updated, by using sys.dm_db_index_usage_stats, I was able to determine this, by some process (stored procedure / SQL Job / etc), but the problem is, I am not sure what process is doing it.
How would I search our SQL Server 2008 database to find any process that manipulates this table / column (I only care about Inserts / Updates and Deletes, but do not really care for SELECT).
