What Are The Implications For Changing The Remote Distributor SQL Server Service Details

Mar 1, 2006

Hi,

I am replicating a couple of SQL2K databases via transactional rep and remote 2K distributor to 1 SQL2K5 database.

I want the distributor to email me when/if any of the agents fail etc. In order to set this up, I think that I need the SQL Server service to use a domain account (from error messages that I have been getting). It is currently using a local system account (it was a test box in a previous life).

I have tried this briefly, and found that it lost the publisher details in the replication monitor. Can anyone tell me what the implications for changing the SQL server service user and password are? Am I going to have to tear down and rebuild replication? The SQL Server Agent is fine - I am trying to get the two services in sync.

Changing Remote Distributor

Nov 15, 2007

SQL 2000.

If I have a server setup to use a remote server for replication distribution can I actually change which server is the distributor?

Example

Server1 has publications
Server2 is distributor for Server1's Publication
Server3 is new hardware

Can i Make Server3 replace Server2 as the distributor?

How can I do this?

Cannot Connect To Remote Distributor -- Linked Server Error

Mar 8, 2007

I have 2 servers: #1 -- SQL 2005 SP1 publisher ; #2 -- SQL 2005 SP2 subscriber

originally I had #1 as pub and dist but dist but killing my CPU so I was in the process of moving the dist to #2... Got it all configured and when I tried to add #2 as a dist for #1 it fails when I get to the administrative password screen... It give me an error about how it cannot connect with the given password but under that is says linked server failed.

Since it mentioned linked server I tried to connect via the previous linked server to #2 and it failed... I cannot connect to #2 anymore from #1. I can login directly to #2 and I can use osql to connect to #2 but linked server does not work. I tried all drivers and many configurations...

Any ideas??

Remote Distributor And Subscriber On Same Machine - Is That OK?

Nov 2, 2006

Hi,

Server A houses the Production DB which services an OLTP system. Transactional replication is configured on this server which has two subscribers - on two separate servers (servers B and C). The Distribution database currently resides on Server A (which is also the Publisher).

Server B is on the same LAN as Server A (on the same rack). I'm considering moving the Distribution database from Server A to Server B to offload some of the processing overhead from Server A.

Are there any gotchas/performance problems associated with having the Distribution database (remote distributor) and the Subscriber on the same server (server B) in a transaction replication topology?

Please advise or point me to the appropriate documentation - I haven't found anything that addresses this specific question...thanks in advance,

Smitha

Failover Options For Remote Distributor

Oct 23, 2007

MS recommends to use remote Distributor for mirroring. It looks like it will be a single point of failure. What are my options ? We can't mirror it, is failover clustering the only way to go (SAN being single point of failure) ? How would log shipping work, if I didn't get the very last completed transaction log fast enough to the other machine, so that recovered distribution database would be behind ?
Also, if distributor fails, would my transaction logs on publisher fill up the entire disk space ? Can it be stopped ?

Thank you.

Changing The SQL Server Service Account

May 4, 2004

I have a SQL 2000 (SP3) running on a Windows NT 4.0 (SP6) box used in our test environment. The SQL Server was configured to run under the local system account before I got here. In an effort to standardize things, I tried changing the SQL Service account to run under a designated domain user account purpose built for the job. We use this particular account for all of our new-build servers (which are W2K). This domain account is configured to be a "Power User" on the NT 4.0 Server in question.

Soon after changing things over to run under the new account, all the developers complained that they could no longer connect to the server. I could through QA and EM, but none of the developers could.

The developers are using WebLogic and JDBC drivers for the most part. I wasn't aware that the SQL Server service account affected client connectivity. Was I wrong or is there something else at work here?

Thanks,

hmscott

Changing SQL Server Service Account

May 31, 2006

Guys,
I have got WINDOWS 2000 Advanced Server and MS SQL SERVER 7.0 running on my live server. Now when we are planning for replication, we have found that SQL server will require to run under a domain account. At the moment there are so many ASP pages running on our server accesses different databases created using SQL server 7.0. Most of them are DSN connections to the database. Now if i create a domain account and restart the server and MS SQL services with the domain account, how is it going to effect the current web pages running on it?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

SQL Server Remote Connections With Web Service

Feb 8, 2007

Hello,
I am getting this error with a web service trying to fill a strongly-typed dataset stored in another project that the web service has connection to.  I keep getting this error:
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server.  When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)
I set it to allow TCP/IP only, TCP/IP and Named Pipes, and Named Pipes only remote connections allowed.  But it still doesn't work.  I don't understand what the problem may be.  I stopped and started the database engine service every time (this is a SQL Express database attached to the server, by the way).
Any insight would be helpful, Thanks.

SQL Server Admin 2014 :: Does Changing Service Account Update NTFS Permissions

Nov 22, 2014

If you were to do a fresh install it would set permissions on the disk so everything just works.

Now when changing the service account (e.g. to a domain user) use the configuration manager, does it do the same magic (possibly sans if the database data/log files are on another disk)? Or do you need to trawl through the dozens of folders and assign rights manually?

Running A Package Programmatically On The Server By Using A Web Service Or Remote Component

Mar 7, 2007

Hi,

I am trying to apply the sample provided by Microsoft in the following article:

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms403355.aspx

I am trying to call a SSIS package from a web service hosted on the same machine as the package file is sitting. The package is running fine from the Agent and also by the "Integration Services Project" in VS.NET.

I had a lot of problems with permissions but they are resolved, at least I have no error messages to point to that direction. Now I am getting these results:

1. Error: -1073659874 / Description: The file name "\Diver-svrInputDataFilesdn_cust.txt" specified in the connection was not valid.

2. Error: -1073659875 / Description: Connection "bdn_cust" failed validation.

3. Error: -1073659874 / Description: The file name "\Diver-svrInputDataFilesdn_cust.txt" specified in the connection was not valid.

4. Error: -1073659875 / Description: Connection "SourceConnectionFlatFile" failed validation.

Where \DiverMInputFilesdn_cust.txt" is a file processed by the package.

Is there anybody who can give me some directions.  Thank you in advance.

Changing The Password For SQL Service Account

Apr 16, 2008

We are running SQL Server 2000 on two servers and when they were built, the same domain account was used for all installations, and the MSSQLSERVER and SQLServerAgent services run logged in as that same account. That account is also the dbo of all the SQL databases. We now need to change the password and possibly disable that domain account.

What do we need to do to make sure the SQL Servers and databases continue to run without problems after making the password change and/or disabling the account?

I appreciate any advice!

Keeping A Remote Table Current. Slowly Changing Dimension?? Thank You

Feb 6, 2008

Somebody suggested I use the slowly changing dimension object to keep a table current between servers and databases.

I have two databases servers. One 2000 and the other 2005. I was told because security reasons I should not link them

The two tables are not identical. The destination table only has a handle of the columns and in some cases columns are not the same size.

Once a day. When new rows are introduced in the source table, I'd like to introduce those rows into the destination table. When rows are modified, I'd like to apply changes to the distination table.

I started playing with the slowly changing dimensions object, but am frankly confused connected the dots. Will I have an output oledb object for each command object?

Am i using the right the object for objective?

Are there any good tutorials or videos out there that will cover this?

Thanks for any help or information!

Implications Of Using SET Statements

May 16, 2008

After I created the following SET statement in my cube it appears as if SSAS is always calculating it before I can switch to the browser view in BIDS. So it almost becomes a performance issue. Also I cannot see it from Excel, why would that be?

Code Snippet
CREATE SET CURRENTCUBE.[Top10Count]
AS TopCount(
CROSSJOIN(
{[DIM IMPORTMONTH].[REVIEWPERIOD].DefaultMember},
{[DIM DMDUNIT].[DMDUNIT].Children},
{[DIM DMDGROUP].[DMDGROUP].Children},
{[DIM LOC].[LOC].Children}
)
,10,[Measures].[QTY]) ;

Here is my questions, it would be great if somebody could advice me:

Why can't I see the SET within Excel although I have marked it visible and given it a name? I see other SETs.

In order to not see empty combinations I would like to add the nonempty() function but cannot get it to work. Where would I put it?

If a user wanted to see the Top10 rows based on QTY I'd expect her/him to pick the SET above and the required dimensions along with the QTY measure and the list should come up, is that correct?

My customers use Excel as the front end so I nees a solution that supports that.

Thanks for any help in advance.

Dirk

Implications Of Incorrect Collation?

Mar 31, 2004

When our servers were built the regional settings were left as US even though we are in the UK.

SQL 2000 was then installed using the defaults and so the codepage is set to

SQL_Latin1_General_Cp1_CI_AS

Not realising that the locale being used in the company was US I built another server and set the default locale to UK and then installed SQL server 2000 which resulted in SQL having a different collation.

When I resotred some databases to my new server there were problems with some of the views and it was traced back to the collation settings.

Looking forward, should the company resolve the fact that we have an incorrect collation on our SQL servers? The implication of this is that all SQL servers will have to be built with US regional settings - otherwise our databases will not function.

Is there a compelling reason why we should resolve this - or just stick with it? What are the implications of sticking or changing?

Temporal Data And Implications

Oct 27, 2014

I'm working with a temporal database of inventory which is updated daily. It looks something like this: TableID ProductID InventoryValue DateAdded DateExpired

The DateAdded field is placed when the row is inserted & each time new information is evaluated, it is considered against this row. DateExpired is finally set when a new row comes to replace it with a change in information. That part works. The part that doesn't work is that often, my distributors will omit inventory as a way of specifying a 0 quantity value. So If I had 100 rows & now I have 95, this means that 5 are now out of stock. Considering the way that my db is set up, it's difficult to identify whether no change was made or if I did not receive the inventory value. How would you set it up such that this is a consideration?
