What Instead Of Select Trigger?

There are acting:
MS SQL Server 2000 + SP4
OrCAD Capture CIS
Capture CIS can read data from tables or views via ODBC. I'd created a view for this purpose, but now I want to implement logging: who had selected the data from view and when he did it the last time.
Several difficulties arised:
There are no triggers for SELECT in MSSQL Server
I can call user defined function in a view, but can't write anything to user defined tables and can't call getdate() within my function
Calling extended stored procedures is an excessively complicated way
Our system administrator doesn't allow the existence of extended stored procedures on the server
Any reasonable suggestions?

Hi,
I'm using Microsoft Identity Integration Server and want to be able, within SQL 2005 to know when MIIS selects data from a table. I've found the APP_NAME() function to be able to identify that the app is MIIS, but I'm stuck with figuring out how to trigger a response on the select.
If you have any experience with MIIS, you will know that it supports reading information from a Delta table (a list of changes). I've got triggers defined that add rows my delta table for Insert, Update, and Delete of the main table. I also add a timestamp to the delta, of when the event occurred.
I'm assuming that MIIS will perform a single select of the data and then read the data. I would like to have a SELECT Trigger that fires and does the following when MIIS selects:
If the APP_NAME() = 'Microsoft Identity Integration Server'
Delete all rows with MIIS_SELECTED='Y'
For all remaining rows set MIIS_SELECTED = 'Y'
allow the select to happen.
Is this possible? If not with a trigger, then with another method of doing it?

hi guys!Currently i'm facing a bit odd situation. i cant modify my code so ihave to make changes in SQL Server.the problem is, i've modified one table by adding new column and now iwant only those row which has not null value in that column wheneverthe select statement gets fire. i mean in every select statement onlythose rows should be returned which has NOT NULL value in the newlyadded column.for this i've created one view and tried to run the application but thei'm facing some problem as my application is developed in .net 2.0,i've used lots of .net functionalities and now i cant make any changesin Code.another solution i think is triggers. if i can fire a trigger beforeany select statements, my problem can be solved instantly but i'mafraid i can not write andy "before select" trigger.if anyone has any idea or any other solution to my problem, please letme know.all suggestions are welcomed.thanks,Lucky

Hello,
I have a trigger on a table named Store. The trigger updates the longitude and latitude on store based on the zip. Simple right? Well, I'm trying to import data and of course the trigger is not updating the data as triggers are not on a row by row basis with multi row inserts.
Here is the error message I'm receiving:
Msg 512, Level 16, State 1, Procedure SetLongLat, Line 17
Subquery returned more than 1 value. This is not permitted when the subquery follows =, !=, <, <= , >, >= or when the subquery is used as an expression.
How would one go about resolving this issue? I've includes my snippets below:

In a SQL db we have we get the following error when just doing a simple select query against the view. Msg 217, Level 16, State 1...Maximum stored procedure, function, trigger, or view nesting level exceeded (limit 32).
No changes have been made to triggers or stored procedures recently and all was good prior to that.I understand that if my triggers loop this error will occur. But the select query does not fire any triggers functions or any other items. and the select worked with no issues last week.

Hey,
I'm new to this whole SQL Server 2005 thing as well as database design and I've read up on various ways I can integrate business constraints into my database. I'm not sure which way applies to me, but I could use a helping hand in the right direction.
A quick explanation of the various tables I'm dealing with:
WBS - the Work Breakdown Structure, for example: A - Widget 1, AA - Widget 1 Subsystem 1, and etc.
Impacts - the Risk or Opportunity impacts for the weights of a part/assembly. (See Assemblies have Impacts below)
Allocations - the review of the product in question, say Widget 1, in terms of various weight totals, including all parts. Example - September allocation, Initial Demo allocation, etc. Mostly used for weight history and trending
Parts - There are hundreds of Parts which will eventually lead to thousands. Each part has a WBS element. [Seems redundant, but parts are managed in-house, and WBS elements are cross-company and issued by the Government]
Parts have Allocations - For weight history and trending (see Allocations). Example, Nut 17 can have a September 1st allocation, a September 5th allocation, etc.
Assemblies - Parts are assemblies by themselves and can belong to multiple assemblies. Now, there can be multiple parts on a product, say, an unmanned ground vehicle (UGV), and so those parts can belong to a higher "assembly" [For example, there can be 3 Nut 17's (lower assembly) on Widget 1 Subsystem 2 (higher assembly) and 4 more on Widget 1 Subsystem 5, etc.]. What I'm concerned about is ensuring that the weight roll-ups are accurate for all of the assemblies.
Assemblies have Impacts - There is a risk and opportunity impact setup modeled into this design to allow for a risk or opportunity to be marked on a per-assembly level. That's all this table represents.
A part is allocated a weight and then assigned to an assembly. The Assemblies table holds this hierarchical information - the lower assembly and the higher one, both of which are Parts entries in the [Parts have Allocations] table.
Therefore, to ensure proper weight roll ups in the [Parts have Allocations] table on a per part-basis, I would like to check for any inserts, updates, deletes on both the [Parts have Allocations] table as well as the [Assemblies] table and then re-calculate the weight roll up for every assembly. Now, I'm not sure if this is a huge performance hog, but I do need to keep all the information as up-to-date and as accurate as possible. As such, I'm not sure which method is even correct, although it seems an AFTER DML trigger is in order (from what I've gathered thus far). Keep in mind, this trigger needs to go through and check every WBS or Part and then go through and check all of it's associated assemblies and then ensure the weights are correct by re-summing the weights listed.
If you need the design or create script (table layout), please let me know.

When a row gets modified and it invokes a trigger, we would like to beable to update the row that was modified inside the trigger. This is(basically) how we are doing it now:CREATE TRIGGER trTBL ON TBLFOR UPDATE, INSERT, DELETEasupdate TBLset fld = 'value'from inserted, TBLwhere inserted.id= TBL.id....This work fine but it seems like it could be optimized. Clearly we arehaving to scan the entire table again to update the row. But shouldn'tthe trigger already know which row invoked it. Do we have to scan thetable again for this row or is their some syntax that allows us toupdate the row that invoked the trigger. If not, why. It seems likethis would be a fairly common task. Thanks.

Hi,
I am not sure if this is the right forum to post this question.
I run an update statement like "Update mytable set status='S' " on the SQL 2005 management Studio.
When I run "select * from mytable" for a few seconds all status = "S". After a few seconds all status turn to "H".
This is a behaviour when you have an update trigger for the table. But I don't see any triggers under this table.
What else would cause the database automatically change my update?
Could there be any other place I should look for an update trigger on this table?

Hi all in .net I've created an application that allows creation of triggers, i also want to allow the deletion of triggers.
The trigger name is kept in a table, and apon deleting the record i want to use the field name to delete the trigger
I have the following Trigger
the error is at
DROP TRIGGER @DeleteTrigger
I'm guessing it dosen't like the trigger name being a variable instead of a static name
how do i get around this?

Hi,
I have a trigger set on TABLE1 so that any update to this column should set off trigger to write to the AUDIT log table, it works fine otherwise but not the very first time when table1 has null in the column. if i comment out
and i.req_fname <> d.req_fname from the where clause then it works fine the first time too. Seems like null value of the column is messing things up
Any thoughts?

I have two mult-value parameters in my report. Both of them working with selecting one or more values. But, when I test using "(Select All)" values for both parameters , only one parameter works. The "available values" for these two parameters are both from the data set.

I have a report that uses different datasets based on the year selected by a user.
I have a year_id parameter that sets a report variable named dataset_chosen. I have varified that these are working correctly together.
I have attempted populating table cell data to display from the chosen dataset. As yet to no avail.
How could I display data from the dataset a user selects via the year_id options?

The letter is passed via a parameter from a aspx web page, I was wondering that someone can help me in the what TSQL to use I am not looking for a solution just a poin in the right direction. I have a problem where my users complain that a select statement takes too long, at 90 seconds, to read 120 records out of a database.
The select statement reads from 9 tables three of which contain 1000000 records, the others contain between 100 and 250000 records.
I have checked that each column in the joins are indexed - they are (but some of them are clustered indexes, not unclustered).
I have run the SQL Profiler trace from the run of the query through the "Database Engine Tuning Advisor". That just suggested two statistics items which I added (no benefit) and two indexes for tables that are not involved at all in the query (I didn't add these).
I also ran the query through the Query window in SSMS with "Include Actual Execution Plan" enabled. This showed that all the execution time was being taken up by searches of the clustered indexes.
I have tried running the select with just three tables involved, and it completes fast. I added a fourth and it took 7 seconds. However there was no WHERE clause for the fourth table, so I got a cartesian product which might have explained the problem.
So my question is: Is it normal for such a type of read query to take 90 seconds to complete?
Is there anything I could do to speed it up.
Any other thoughts?

I am using SQL Server 2005 with SP2. I have multi select parameter in the report. In SP2 reporting services gives Select All option in the drop down.
Is there any way I can remove that option from the list?

When I run simple select against my view in Query Analyzer, I get result set in one sort order. The sort order differs, when I BCP the same view. Using third technique i.e. Select Into, I have observed the sort order is again different in the resulting table. My question is what is the difference in mechanisim of query analyzer, bcp, and select into.

now i want to get the name of each product so it whould be like:

the names stored in other table.
how can i do it?

This works great if there is at least one OP coverage. There are 3 tables in which to get information which are the patient table, the coverage table, and the coverage history table. The coverage table links to the patient table via pat_id and it tells me the patient's coverage plan and in which priority to bill. The coverage history table links to the patient and coverage table via patient id and coverage plan and it gives me the effective date.

There are several parameters on a report. One of the parameter is a multi-select enabled parameter and I suppressed the value "All" showing as one of the item in the drop down list, simply by filter out the [bha].[bha].CURRENTMEMBER.LEVEL.ORDINAL to 1, as "(Select All)" is pre-assigned to the drop list when multi-select is enabled and it is confusing to show "(Select All)" and "All" in the drop list. However I have another report which is linked to this report and the value which is required to pass to this report for this parameter is "All". Can I pass the "Select All" as a parameter from the other report? If so, how? Thanks.

I'm doing a INSERT...SELECT where I'm dependent on the records SELECT:ed to be in a certain order. This order is enforced through a clustered index on that table - I can see that they are in the proper order by doing just the SELECT part.
However, when I do the INSERT, it doesn't work (nothing is inserted) - can the order of the records from the SELECT part be changed internally on their way to the INSERT part, so to speak?
Actually - it is a view that I'm inserting into, and there's an instead-of-insert trigger on it that does the actual insertions into the base table. I've added a "PRINT" statement to the trigger code and there's just ONE record printed (there should be millions).
