What Is The Constraints Expression For Unique(Column)?

Oct 8, 2007

I am in the "Check Constraints" window trying to add a constraint that during inserts only allow distinct Column2 insertions. What is the Expression for that? I tried UNIQUE(Column2) it give me an error.

Here is my table definition:
Column Name Data Type Allow Nulls
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Column1(PrimaryKey) int No
Column2 nvarchar(MAX) No

UGH! Failed To Enable Constraints. One Or More Rows Contain Values Violating Non-null, Unique, Or Foreign-key Constraints.

Jan 9, 2007

I know this is probably a flick of a switch but I cannot figure out which switch.  Setup is SQL Server / Stored Procedures / DAL / BLL(skipped for testing) / PL.  The stored procedure queries from only one table and two columns are ignored because they are being phased out.  I can run the stored procedure and preview the data in the DAL but when I create a page with an ODS linked to the DAL and a GridView I get this error.  I checked every column that does not allow nulls and they all have values.  I checked unique columns (ID is the only unique and is Identity=Yes in the table definition).  I checked foreign-key columns for values that are not in the foreign table and there are none.  Any ideas why do I get this?

Failed To Enable Constraints. One Or More Rows Contain Values Violating Non-null, Unique, Or Foreign-key Constraints.

Jan 17, 2008

Hi,
I am getting the above error when trying to load a report into my Web Application, I have tracked the error down to one specific field in my database. Even though this field is a NVarChar field and is of size 30 it would seem that  there is an issue returning the value from the field. I can write it into the database no problems but when I try to get it out of the database it returns the above error.
e.g
MOB 401.908.804 - Fails
0401.907.324 - okay
8239 9082 (pager) - fails
Anyone got an idea on how to fix this????
Regards..
Peter.

I need to ensure that each record in a table is unique in terms of two fields. E.g. Job No. 1 and Phase 1 cannot exist twice. I've tried to achieve this using a compound primary key but am having no joy. Im sure its a simple issue, any suggestions?

Check / Unique Constraints

Apr 18, 2001

Hello, I want to write a unique constraint that applies to more than one column. What I mean is that the uniqueness should be that if column A is 5 and column B is 3 no other row where A and B has those values can exist.

Do I write this as a check constraint ? Or how do I do it ?

Also, is there anyone who knows some good reading on how to use Link Tables (many to many relations) in MS SQL Server ?

DB Design :: Unique And Check Constraints

Sep 3, 2015

I have one table like below Test table. My requirement is to create constraints to confirm <g class="gr_ gr_331 gr-alert gr_gramm Grammar only-ins replaceWithoutSep" data-gr-id="331" id="331">uniqueness</g> of STID value 101 with LN.

like

ID - LN - STID
1 - 'ABC' - 101  ---- Valid Row
2 - 'ABC' - 202 --- Valid Row
3 - 'ABC' - 202 --Valid Row (as I want only unique when LN = 'ABC' with STID = 101)
4 - 'ABC' - 101 -- Invalid Row (As I want uniqueness base on LN and STID = 1011)

create table dbo.Test
(
ID int identity,
LN varchar(50),
STID bigint
)

Is this possible with constraints as I don't want to use <g class="gr_ gr_1041 gr-alert gr_gramm Grammar only-ins doubleReplace replaceWithoutSep" data-gr-id="1041" id="1041">trigger</g>.

Checking For Unique Constraints During A Batch Update

Jan 28, 2004

hello .
i have a grid for a table that gets updated with recordset.updatebatch
for a multi-user application.

the problem is that some of the table fields have to be unique

now imagine the next situation.

user A opens the form
user B opens the form
user A writes '1000' in the unique field
user A saves the recordset with updatebatch

user B writes '1000' in the unique field
user B saves the recordset with updatebatch

now there will be two records with the field '1000' !

how can i avoid this ?
i cannot check for unique during the update event of the grid
because it should check during the time it is saving and not
when it is just entering data without having updated the recordset

thanks !

I am having issues trying to write a query that would provide me the unique GUID numbers associated with a distinct PID if the unique GUID's > 1.  To summarize, I need a query that just shows which PID's have more than one unique GUID. A PID could have multiple GUID's that are the same, I'm looking for the PID's that have multiple GUID's that are different/unique.

Table1

GUID PID
GUID1 PID1
GUID1 PID1
GUID1 PID1
GUID2 PID1
GUID3 PID2
GUID3 PID2
GUID3 PID2

The result of the query would only have PID1 because it has two unique GUID's. PID2 would not be listed has it has the same GUID3 in each row.

Result:

PID1

Column Level Constraints

Jul 17, 2001

Hello all.

First of all, I've been a reader of swynk.com for quite sometime now, and I'd like to say 'thank you' to everyone who contributes.

Today, I'm the town moron.. haha I'm having issues with column level constraints. I have a varchar(50) where I want to keep *,=,#,/, .. etc, OUT OF the value input. I don't want to strip them. I simply want for sql to throw an error if the insert contains those (and other characters). The only characters that I want in the column are A-Z and 0-9. However, it's not a set number of characters per insert. It always varies... There has to be an easier way to do this than creating a constraint for every possibilty... Any help would be greatly appreciated.

How Do I Alter Column With Constraints ?

Nov 22, 2007

I have about 100 databases which yeterday had the wrong ddl for a column added, we have a simple cursor that loops through all databases on the server and runs the sql statement.

The following was run

ALTER TABLE salesrep ADD newCol bit DEFAULT 1

Problem is that it should have been this (and preferably have had a named constraint):

ALTER TABLE salesrep ADD newCol bit NOT NULL DEFAULT 0

Problem is now i dont know the names of the contraints they have random hex on the end "The object 'DF__SALESREP__newCol__5BCD9859' is dependent on column..."

How do i just drop this column with ANY constraints on it?,

I really dont want to go through the databases 1 by 1 and look up the constraint name then drop the constraint, then drop the column so i can add it in correctly.

I wish the following would just work.

ALTER TABLE salesrep ALTER COLUMN newCol bit NOT NULL Default 0

QUESTION: Status Column Of FK Constraints In Sysobjects - ????

Jul 23, 2005

Greetings:I have to do a one-off forceful change of some data in a database. Ineed to disable some FK constraints, make the data change, and thenre-enable the constraints. My process will be:ALTER TABLE TABLE1 NOCHECK CONSTRAINT FK_TABLE1_TABLE2UPDATE TABLE1 SET COLUMN1=2 WHERE COLUMN2='Problem row'ALTER TABLE TABLE1 CHECK CONSTRAINT FK_TABLE1_TABLE2I wanted to get some evidence that the constraints were back up after Idid the 'check constraint' statements, so I looked in sysobjects. There's a status column for the constraints, but I can't make muchsense of the numbers. Most of the FK constraints that I have notchanged are of status 0, but when I NOCHECK a constraint, it goes to2304. When I CHECK it again, it's 2408.Can someone explain this, and suggest a way to double-check that myconstraints are in fact enabled once I run the CHECK statement? Thanks!!

Add Values To A Column With Derived Column Expression?

Feb 25, 2008

Hi, how are you?
I'm having a problem and I don't know if it can be solved with a derived column expression. This is the problem:

We are looking data in a a sql database.

We are writting the SQL result in a flat file.

We need to transform data in one of the columns.

For example: we can have 3 digits as value in a column but that column must be 10 digit length. So we have to complete all the missing digits with a zero. So, that column will have the original 3 digits and 7 zeros. How we can do that tranformation? We must do it from de the flat file or it can be a previous step?
Thanks for any help you can give me.

Integrity Constraint Error On SQL Server Column With No Constraints

Aug 6, 2007

I have created a simple package to load an Excel Spreadsheet into a SQL Server table. There is a one to one relationship between the columns in the .xls file and the columns in the DB record. I am getting integrity constraint errors when I try to load all numeric data from the spreadsheet (defined as Category General in excel, not defined as numeric but consisting of all numeric characters) into a column defined as (nvarchar(20), not null) in SQL Server Management Studio. There are no constraints on the column.

I have been able to temporarily bypass the offending rows, but I do need to load them into SQL Server. The problem column has a mixture of data, two examples would be: N255, 168050. It's the 168050 value that's causing the Task to bomb. How can I get this loaded into my table ?

I am running the package from within MS Visual Studio 2005 Version 8, Excel is version 2003 (11.8120.8122) SP2

Thanks,
Chris

Unique ID, Without An ID Column

How can I assign or retrieve a unique ID from a msSQL table where there isn't a unique column.

Is there a hidden 'raw id' i can retrieve from msSQL for each record?

I'm not allowed to change the current database at all, but the developers who created it managed to use it without Unique IDs.... which doesn't help me coming from a mySQL background where UID's are kind of mandatory.

Dervied Column - Expression?

Feb 22, 2007

Hi:

I have a Dervied Column Component, in which there is a column called RecStatusCode. The criteria to give a value to that column is below in SQL:

(SELECT CASE CertParticipant
WHEN 'Y' THEN 'C'
WHEN NULL THEN 'A'
END
FROM [dbo].[SchoolCertRequest]
WHERE SchoolID = (SELECT SchoolCode FROM [WebStrategy].[LAF].[LoanApplication] WHERE LoanApplicationID = @LoanApplicationID) and SchoolBranch = (SELECT BranchCode FROM [WebStrategy].[LAF].[LoanApplication] WHERE LoanApplicationID = @LoanApplicationID) AND LoanType=(SELECT LoanApplicationTypeCode FROM [WebStrategy].[LAF].[LoanApplication] WHERE LoanApplicationID = @LoanApplicationID))

My question is how can I use this SQL in that expression field, or is it possible to have a user variable, with the above sql being the criteria, and the value could be used in the derived column, by just using the variable in the expression. In either case, I hope you understand what I am trying to accomplish. The reason why its like this is because currently in my Data Flow Task, i Have a OLEDB source which returns 25+ column values, the source connects to this derived column item, and then finally the destination oledb where the mapping takes place. So basically I am trying to avoid MERGE JOIN, because i tried using it , and it complicated the whole thing much more then it really needs to be. Like the RecStatusCode column, i have 5 more columns which are dervied, and the values are coming from a SQL statement similar to above. I really need some help here, and I have not seen anything in reference to this in BOL or any articles online. Thanks in advance.

Unique Column Constraint

Jun 6, 2008

I like to use the management console to design tables, but have
been unable to figure out how to add a unique column constraint.

I have a primary key defined in col1 and want to make col2, char(10),
unique, but keep col1 as the primary key.

I have tried the Check constraint menu path, but do not know how
to write the expression.

If I go along the Indexes/Key path, I am forced to change the primary
key which I do not want to do.

Can anyone help?

Unique Column Data

The Opposite Of ADD UNIQUE (Column Name)

Nov 3, 2015

I just started with SQL Server Express and was playing around with the Management Studio.

I created a query to make a column unique:

ATLTER TABLE Table_Name
ADD UNIQUE (Column_Name)

That worked perfect, if I fill in the same data in the next row of that column, I get an error as expected. But, how do I remove the UNIQUE property on that column? I can find it in the column properties within Management studio, neither I can't find the command to undo this action.

Group By On A Unique Column

Nov 23, 2007

Hello!

This is not really a question, maybe a start of discussion if this could be a feature in coming versions...

Let's say I have a table like this:
id text1 text2
int varchar varchar

1 abc ghi
2 abc ghi
3 def ghi

and I want to query using group by, I would write SELECT text1, text2 FROM table GROUP BY text1, text2

This is not too bad, but imagine I got several columns of text I need to query, then I need to put them in both places, SELECT and GROUP BY. If I do use functions like SUBSTRING or concatenation on the columns, I need to repeat these in the GROUP BY as well.

It would be nice if I could say "GROUP BY id", and since id is unique on the table it is obvious that all columns taken from this table are already grouped and can be queried without having to have them in group as well.
For functions this is of course only possible if all parts only refer to columns from this table, or absolute entries, like LEFT(varchar ,3) or int+1 or such.

With this example, the benefit is not visible: if I added the id to the GROUP BY, I get every single row of course. GROUP on unique is useless... It does make sense if you query another table and join in this one as a lookup, and the id gets "multiple" this way.

As I said, just an idea to make the GROUP BY section more transparent and avoid repeating sections!

I'd like to know what you think of that.
Ralf
