Power Pivot :: Temp Table Or Table Variable In Query (not Stored Procedure)?
Jul 19, 2012I don't know if it's a local issue but I can't use temp table or table variable in a PP query (so not in a stored procedure).
Environment: W7 enterprise desktop 32 + Office 2012 32 + PowerPivot 2012 32
Simple example:
   declare @tTable(col1 int)
   insert into @tTable(col1) values (1)
   select * from @tTable
Works perfectly in SQL Server Management Studio and the database connection is OK to as I may generate PP table using complex (or simple) queries without difficulty.
But when trying to get this same result in a PP table I get an error, idem when replacing table variable by a temporary table.
Message: OLE DB or ODBC error. .... The current operation was cancelled because another operation the the transaction failed.

I've looked into table variables and they are not what I would require to accomplish what is needed.
After browsing through the forums I believe I need to use dynamic sql particuarly involving sp_executesql. However, I am pretty new at sql and do not really understand how to use this and receive an output parameter from it(msdn kind of confuses me too). I am tryin got receive an integer count of the records from a certain table which can change to anything depending on what the user requires.
Code Snippet

It does not like the 'drop table @temptablename' part here. This probably wouldn't be an issue if I could get temporary tables to work, however when I use temporary tables i get invalid object '#temptable'.
Heres what the stored procedure does.
I duplicate a table that is going to be modified by using 'select into temptable'
I add the records required using 'Insert into temptable(Columns) Select(Columns)f rom TableA'
then I truncate the original table that is being modified and insert the temporary table into the original.
Heres the actual SQL query that produces the temporary table error.

Msg 208, Level 16, State 0, Line 1
Invalid object name '#temptableabcd'.
Why does this seem to work when I use an actual table? With an actual table the SQL runs smoothly, however that creates the table names as a variable problem from above. Is there certain limitation with temporary tables in stored procedures? How would I get the temporary table to work in this case if possible?

Temporary Table In Stored Procedure Doesn't Work From SQLDataSource

CREATE TABLE #t1 (... ...);
WITH temp AS (....)
INSERT INTO #t1
SELECT .... FROM temp LEFT OUTER JOIN anothertable ON ...
This stored procedure works fine in Management Studio.
I then use this stored procedure in an ASP.NET page via a SQLDataSource object. The ASP.NET code compiles without error, but the result returned is empty (my bounded GridView object has zero rows). From Web Developer, if I try to Refresh Schema on the SQLDATASource object, I get an error: "Invalid object name '#t1'. The error is at the red #1 as I tried putting something else at that location to confirm it.
What does the error message mean and what have I done wrong?

Aug 24, 2007I need to use a variable for a table name, pass it to a stored procedure that extracts data, and then store the result of the sp in another variable.
For example, earlier in the program I construct the table name using this statement:
@tablename = 'OC_TEMPLATE_' + @FORM. The resulting table name may by something like: OC_TEMPLATE_101
Now I need to use this table name in a statement like this:
SELECT ITEM FROM @TABLENAME WHERE DEX = @REC
If I use code like this, I can get a result, but I can't store it in a variable:
EXECUTE ('SELECT ITEM FROM ' + @TABLENAME + ' WHERE DEX = ' + @REC)
Running this give me a value of 309 in the results pane in Management Studio. 309 is the value I want, but I want to now store that in a variable called @ITEM.
I'm trying to run this as a stored procedure where I pass @tablename and @rec into the proc and I want to return @item as an output parameter with the value of 309 (in this case) in @item. I can't figure out how to configure the proc to give me the output parameter.
Any ideas?

I am working on an mailing list program and I am trying to create a preview option for the sender (to preview their message prior to sending)
I am new to .net and sql but I thought it might be best to do this with table variable inside a stored procedure.. I just do not know how to insert the data into the table variable and select that data at the same time, to return it back to a preview.aspx page.
Please forgive my ignorance..
here is my stored procedure..

I've created it as DECLARE @Temp TABLE (id INT)
in select clause I've used this temp table through the joins..
But I've also used a varchar variable to store my criteria...
which I'm building in the stored procedure
so inorder to use it in the where clause I used
EXEC ('SELECT ....................
FROM @Temp T
LEFT OUTER JOIN ...
LEFT OUTER JOIN ...
WHERE ' + @Criteria )
Unfortunately this is not working.
Giving the errror
Must declare the variable '@TempT'.
I had to use Temporary table using #, which I feel is really waste of memory...
Is there a way by which I can use my Table variable in the EXEC statement.

I have a table name stored in a scalar variable (input parameter of my stored procedure). I need to run SQL statement: SELECT COUNT (*) FROM MyTable and store the result of my query in a scalar variable:
For example:
declare @countRows int
set @countRows = (select count(*) from MyTable)
The problem is that the name of MyTable is stored in the input variable of my stored procedure and of corse this does not work:
declare @countRows int
set @countRows = (select count(*) from @myTableName)
I also tried this:
declare @sqlQuery varchar(100)
set @sqlQuery = 'select count(*) from ' + @myTableName
set @countRows = exec(@sqlQuery)
But it looks like function exec() does not return any value...
Any idea how to solve this problem?

May 2, 2007In SQL Manager I can right click on a stored procedure, table, etc. and I am presented with a list of options one of which is "Create >". Clicking this I can get a script that will create the respective stored procedure or table and write the create script to the clipboard, a file, or an SQL query window. I want to automate this to essentially selectively "back up" our data base by creating one large script that will create the tables and stored procedures from the database. Is there an API, tool, or library call that I can get access to the code that implements these menu selections?

SQL Server 2012 :: Stored Procedures Compiles Even When There Is No CREATE TABLE For A Temp Table
Feb 11, 2015i am inserting something into the temp table even without creating it before. But this does not give any compilation error. Only when I want to execute the stored procedure I get the error message that there is an invalid temp table. Should this not result in a compilation error rather during the execution time.?
--create the procedure and insert into the temp table without creating it.

When I run the below code (simplified version of my real SP), no records are returned even though I know that there is data. Jun 11, 2006Here's my problem:I'm developing an ASP.NET 2.0 application that has a user select one or moreauto manufacturers from a listbox ("lstMakes"). Once they do this, anotherlistbox ("lstModels") should be filled with all matching models made by theselected manufacturers. If lstMakes was not multi-select, I'd have noproblem. But in this case it has to be multi-select. The database is SQLServer 2005 which does not accept arrays as parameters. I've been told thatI have to create an XML document that will act as a filtered Manufacturerstable that I can join to my Models table in my stored procedure. Problem isI don't have the foggiest idea how to do this. I've seen some examples thatjust leave me scratching my head so I was hoping someone could look at whatI'm trying to do and show me how to do this. Thanks!
