What Is The Problem And Suitable Solution In This Case

Dec 3, 1998

Hi,

I am trying to dump-load a db from one server to another.I don't have any
problem with the dump and load , the problem is with scheduling the copying of
the dump file fron server1 to server2.

I tried using xp_cmdshell 'copy filename filename ' to schedule it but it
says "access denied" zero files copied...(using sa account and standard
security)
But when I telnet to server1 and issue copy filename filename it works fine.
how can I correct this problem and schedule the dump-copy-load??????

Trying To Figure Out A Suitable Sql Structure

Oct 17, 2007

I'm new to sql and have come up with a problem and can't seem to find the answer. Most would probably find it simple but I cant get my head around it! :p
I have the following table structure
User_Table-----------User_ID (Key)FirstNameLastName
Contacts_Table--------------User_ID (F key)Contact_User_ID
User_Table stores all users details and assigns them a User_ID. Users can add other users to their contacts, and this will be stored in Contacts_Table on a one-to-many basis.
*deep breath*... So User_ID in Contacts_Table, will store the User_ID from User_Table, and the Contact_User_ID in Contacts_Table will store the User_ID from User_Table. Does this seem ok? Sorry if I confused everyone!
So my question is, how do I select a user and show all his contacts (names etc)? I thought I could use innerjoin but I dont think it would work here.
Any ideas?
Thanks!

Mirroring Suitable For Version Update?

Jun 11, 2007

In the near future I need to move a 27GB database from SQL2000 to SQL 2005 that is located in a different data center. I can do a backup, copy the .bak file over the WAN and do a restore, but that will take several hours over the WAN. I think the new server will be standalone, not a cluster. We have not purchased it as yet.

What options do I have to minimize downtime? I don't think I can log ship between SQL versions, but I might be able to run two instances of SQL on the new server (2000 and 2005), although I consider that an iffy proposition as well. The OS would be Win2003 sp2 on the new server. What other options do I have? Would mirroring work between versions? Thanks for any suggestions.

Suitable Topology For SQL Server Replication

Mar 15, 2006

Hi,

I am given with the responsibility to set up database replication in my organisation.

Before starting the replication set up, I would like to know which is the best suited replication for my application.

My application is much process oriented, and the users are working on records parallely(but with different records).

Say for ex:

There is a module for Insurance claim processing, it is handled in the following manner:

There are many employees with CSR roles, and all are working on some set of records to be processed. But No two employees should get the same record for processing. For that, we are doing locking of the cases by having one column called 'LOCKED_STATUS' and setting value as LOCKED. So that other users wont get the same case. Once the case is processed, the record is marked as unlocked.

My analysis for replication is as follows:

1. Snapshot replication: This wont be a suitable type of replication as the updations are to be immediately updated on all the subscribers, because when the user executes select query to get the next unlocked case, No 2 user should be able to get the same case.

I think, the best replication to chose from is, Transactional replication with Immediate Updation/Queued updation. But the problem is, when one of the subscriber goes offline, the updations are queued up. But in my case, say for ex. One case is updated as locked, but the subscriber is offline and the updations are queued up. At the same time, the other subscriber can fire an select query to get the next unlocked case. Since the update is on queue, there are possibilies for this subscriber to get

the same case.

Can anyone let me know, are the select statements also queued up(i.e., along with update and insert statements.)? If not please let me know how to approach for this problem.

Thanks in advance.

How Do I Write A Query (which Uses A Union) Suitable For Paging

Aug 13, 2007

How do I write a query (using a union) suitable for paging
I currently have a query which results from two queries combined by a union. It returns 3000 rows. I want to replace that query with one which returns only 50 rows from the relevant page [using ROW_NUMBER()].
Is there a way to do this with only 1 CTE or will I need to use two consecutive CTEs [the first get a union on the queries and the second to apply ROW_NUMBER()]. I can't see a way of doing it with only 1 CTE table.
Alternatively is there a very efficient way to do it using derived tables?

SQL 2012 :: Is Table Compression Suitable To Reduce I/O

Feb 11, 2015

I have huge table, often I need to query the table on the whole; ie., data may required at any part of the table. So I think of to compress the table with the aim of reducing I/O.

1. is that really suitable for this requirement? If So which compression is good (Row or page )?

2. Or is there any other alternate to reduce the I/O (Except Indexing)?

3. Pros and cons ?

Suitable Laptop Spec For Running SQL Server Enterprise Edition

Mar 17, 2008

Hi Guys!

I want to buy a laptop, so that I can install and play with the trial SS 2005 Enterprise Edition and hopefully get familiar with SSIS. At work I have only used SS 2000. I want a laptop which will run this with a reasonable speed, but don't want to pay for more juice than is actually required. Does anyone have any advice on what kind of spec would be good enough for SS 2005 Enterprise? If I go for the basics suggested by the system requirements, will it run like a tortoise?

SOLUTION! - VB.NET 2005 Express And SQL Server 2005 - NOT Saving Updates To DB - SOLUTION!

Nov 30, 2006

VB.NET 2005 Express and SQL Server 2005 Express - NOT saving updates to DB - SOLUTION!

-----------------------------------

The following article is bogus and confusing:

How to: Manage Local Data Files - Setting 'Copy to Output Directory' to 'Do not copy'
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms246989.aspx

You must manually copy the database file to the output directory
AFTER setting 'Copy to Output Directory' to 'Do not copy'.

Do not copy

The file is never copied or overwritten by the project system. Because your application creates a dynamic connection string that points to the database file in the output directory, this setting only works for local database files when you manually copy the file yourself.

You must manually copy the database file to the output directory
AFTER setting 'Copy to Output Directory' to 'Do not copy'.

-----------------------------------

The above article is bogus and confusing.

This is rediculous!

This is the most vague and convoluted bunch of nonsince I've ever come accross!

Getting caught out on this issue for the 10th time!
And not being able to find an exact step-by-step solution.

--------------------------

I've tried it and it doesn't work for me.

Please don't try what the article eludes to as I'm still sorting out exactly what is supposed to be happening.

If you have a step-by-step procedure that can be reproduced this properly please PM me.

I would like to test its validity then update this exact post as a solution rather than just another dicussion thread.

Many thanks.

This is the exact procedure I have come up with:

NOTE 1: DO NOT allow VB.net to copy the database into its folders/directorys.

NOTE 2: DO NOT hand copy the database to a folder/directory in your project.

Yes, I know its hard not to do it because you want your project nice and tidy.
I just simply could NOT get it to work.
You should NOT have myData.mdf listed in the Solution Explorer. Ever.

Create a folder for your data following NOTE 2.

Copy your data to that folder. * mine was C:mydatamyData.mdf

Create a NEW project.

Remove any Data Connections. ( no matter what)

Save it.

Data | View Data Sources

Add New Data Source

select NEW CONNECTION ( No Matter what, do it!

Select the database. * again mine was C:mydatamyData.mdf

Answer NO to the question:
Would you like to copy the file to your project and modify the connection?
- NO ( no matter what - ANSWER NO ! - Absolutely NO )
Then select the tables you want in the DataSet.
and Finish.

To Test ----------

From the Solution Explorer | click the table name drop down arrow | select details
Now Drag the table name onto the form.

The form is then populated with a Navigation control
and matching Labels with corresponding Textboxes for each field in the table.

Save it.

1) Run the app.

Add one database record to the database by pressing the Add(+) icon

Just add some quick junk data that you don't mind getting lost if it doesn't save.

YOU MUST CLICK THE SAVE ICON to save the data you just entered.

Now exit the application.

2) Run the app again.

And verify there is one record already there.

Now add a second database record to the database by pressing the Add (+) icon.

NOW add some quick junk data that you WILL intentionally loose.

*** DO NOT *** press the save icon.

Just Exit the app.

3) Again, Run the app.

Verify that the first record is still there.

Verify that the Second record is NOT there.
Its NOT there because you didn't save the data before exiting the app.

Proving that YOU MUST CLICK THE SAVE ICON to save the data you just entered.

Also proving you must add your own code to catch the changes
and ask the user to save the data before exitiing or moving to another record.

As a side note, since vb.net uses detached datasets,
(a copy/snapshot of the dataset in memory and NOT directly linked to the database)
the dataset will reflect all changes made when moving around the detached datasets.
YOU MUT REMEMBER TO SUBMIT YOUR CHANGES TO THE DATABASE TO SAVE THEM.
Otherwise, they will simply be discarded without notice.

Whewh!

I hope this saves me some time the next time I want to start a new database project.

Oh, and uh, for anyone else reading this post.

Thanks,

Case Insensitivity Is On Server Wide: Tables Render Case Sensative...

Jan 6, 2005

Hello:

I have created an SQL server table in the past on a server that was all case sensative. Over time I found out that switching to a server that is not case sensative still caused my data to become case sensative. I read an article that said you should rebuild your master database then re-create your tables. So after rebuilding the master database, a basic restore would not be sufficient? I would have to go and manually re-create every single table again?

Any suggestions?

HELP! Case Insensitive Database On Case Sensitive Server

Aug 17, 2005

We need to install CI database on CS server, and there are some issueswith stored procedures.Database works and have CI collation (Polish_CI_AS). Server hascoresponding CS collation (Polish_CS_AS). Most queries and proceduresworks but some does not :-(We have table Customer which contains field CustomerID.Query "SELECT CUSTOMERID FROM CUSTOMER" works OK regardless ofcharacter case (we have table Customer not CUSTOMER)Following TSQL generate error message that must declare variable @id(in lowercase)DECLARE @ID INT (here @ID in uppercase)SELECT @id=CustomerID FROM Customer WHERE .... (here @id in lowercase)I know @ID is not equal to @id in CS, but database is CI and tablenames Customer and CUSTOMER both works. This does not work forvariables.I suppose it is tempdb collation problem (CS like a server collationis). I tried a property "Identifier Case Sensitivity" for myconnection, but it is read only and have value 8 (Mixed) by default -this is OK I think.DO I MISS SOMETHING ????

Problem Using Result From CASE In Another CASE Statement

Nov 5, 2007

I have a view where I'm using a series of conditions within a CASE statement to determine a numeric shipment status for a given row. In addition, I need to bring back the corresponding status text for that shipment status code.

Previously, I had been duplicating the CASE logic for both columns, like so:

Code Block...beginning of SQL view...
shipment_status =
CASE
[logic for condition 1]
THEN 1
WHEN [logic for condition 2]
THEN 2
WHEN [logic for condition 3]
THEN 3
WHEN [logic for condition 4]
THEN 4
ELSE 0
END,
shipment_status_text =
CASE
[logic for condition 1]
THEN 'Condition 1 text'
WHEN [logic for condition 2]
THEN 'Condition 2 text'
WHEN [logic for condition 3]
THEN 'Condition 3 text'
WHEN [logic for condition 4]
THEN 'Condition 4 text'
ELSE 'Error'
END,
...remainder of SQL view...

This works, but the logic for each of the case conditions is rather long. I'd like to move away from this for easier code management, plus I imagine that this isn't the best performance-wise.

This is what I'd like to do:

Code Block
...beginning of SQL view...
shipment_status =
CASE
[logic for condition 1]
THEN 1
WHEN [logic for condition 2]
THEN 2
WHEN [logic for condition 3]
THEN 3
WHEN [logic for condition 4]
THEN 4
ELSE 0
END,

shipment_status_text =

CASE shipment_status

WHEN 1 THEN 'Condition 1 text'

WHEN 2 THEN 'Condition 2 text'

WHEN 3 THEN 'Condition 3 text'

WHEN 4 THEN 'Condition 4 text'

ELSE 'Error'

END,
...remainder of SQL view...

This runs as a query, however all of the rows now should "Error" as the value for shipment_status_text.

Is what I'm trying to do even currently possible in T-SQL? If not, do you have any other suggestions for how I can accomplish the same result?

Thanks,

Jason

Possible Solution?

Mar 3, 2008

Hi, i am not sure if i can solve the problem with SSIS. I wanted do do it hardcoded with C# or so.

So, for my project I need to download zip-files on a daily-base. In these zip-files are xml-Files. And in these files is information stored for inserting or updating tables on a MS-SQL-Server.

So, my question, is it possible to solve that with SSIS? And if, is it easy to understand and to learn within a few days?

I haven't found good sources for information on how to get the data out of XML-Files.

To simplify the case a bit:
We have one central server which has a table Sales(id, shopid, article).
Also our 50 shops have the same table Sales(id, shopid, article).

spec 1:
When a shop sells an article, the row of the Sales table at the local shop has to be replicated to the central server. This way, the central server its Sales table has all sold articles from all shops.

spec2:
But now we have also an internet shop. All e-orders arrive immediately in the table Sales at the Central Serve with a specific shopid where the article will arrive. Now i have to find a way to replicate the new rows from the Central Server to the specific Shop.... Remark: the other shops should not have rows of other shops.

which type of replication would i use the best and how?

Thanks !

Add New Database To Solution

Mar 20, 2006

I'm running VS 2005 Enterprise, and SQL Server 2005 Developer / workgroup edition.I'm trying to follow a few online examples to play around, and some of these examples require that you add a SQL DB to your solution by going:-right click on website-Add new Item-Add SQL DataBase.WHen I do that, I get the error that SQL Express isn't installed.  Now the question is, why would I want SQL Express installed when I have SQL server 2005 already installed? My Machine can support it, but it's sort of a waste when I need to run SQL Server 2000, SQL Server 2005 and then SQL Server express all at the same time.Any advice?
