What To Use In Place Of MS Access To View SQL Server Tables?
Oct 15, 2006
Our business application is running SQL Server in a remote data center and we had been using MS Access from a local PC to occasionally fix data problems in the data base. As the tables continue to grow, it's painfully obvious MS Access just can't handle the volume of data. One of our tables we need to get into is about 200,000 rows, another is over 100,000 rows.
We need to be able to change individual rows, and perform search and replace commands across one or more columns in select tables.
What software can we install on local desktops to allow viewing and editing of SQL table data?
Hey everyone. I've linke an access database and I am able to query the tables like so:
SELECT * FROM QFinity...tblEmployees
I can do that to all the tables, however, I'd like to create a view to this linked database. Is this possible? I have a more complex query I'd like to run:
SELECT dbo_evaluations.eval_id, dbo_evaluations.quality_date, dbo_eval_questions.status FROM QFinity...dbo_evaluations INNER JOIN dbo_eval_questions ON dbo_evaluations.eval_id = dbo_eval_questions.eval_id;
I get the error "Msg 208, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Invalid object name 'dbo_evaluations'."
I'm afraid I've reached the limit of my know how concerning sql server 2005... I think I read that I need to create a view? But I can't figure out how to do that.
I want to create a view to get records from multiple tables. I have a UserID in all the tables. When I pass UserID to view it should get records from multiple tables. I have a table
UserInfo with as data as UserID=1, FName = John, LName=Abraham and Industry = 2. I have a Industry table with data as ID=1 and Name= Sports, ID =2 and Name= Film.
When I query view where UserID=1 it should return record as
I have a Site 2509CRUZ2 and SB1931 that have Multiple Contract ID's assigned to them in the table. Which are in 12 font below. I need to create a script to take these duplicates and place them in their own view but not delete them from the table.
I am translating some of my Access queries to SQL views. In one of those, I had a very convenient function called "IIF" (e.g. IIf(IsNull([Remark]),"NULL","NOT NULL").
How is this function called in the MS SQL Server 2000? Apparently I cannot use either "IIF" nor "CASE" in the query/view.....

I don't know which function to use for format$, IIF. Iwould really appreciate your suggestions. Thanks,
Dear All, i am making small web application using asp.net, C# ,sql2000. i want a about regarding how to access view or table from other server to local server. i have base database where there is a view which need to access in my database of local server.that is how to make select query to access view in other server Please help thanks
I would like to be able to view the complete SQL command that is sent from a Microsoft Access query which has linked SQL Server tables through ODBC, and the query also has some VBA functions manipulating and filtering data.I tried using the SQL Profiler to view the sql command send to SQL Server but all I see is the simple query format and some of the fields. I don't see the fields that have a VBA function such as trim(fieldname) etc in the column. And If I use a VBA fucntion in the Criteria then nothing shows up in SQL Profiled under the TextData column. How can I see the complete SQL command sent to SQL Server?
When using Sql Server Enterprise Manager and viewing a Database / Tables section, most of the tables if not all have a create date of 11/5/2004.Except for one, DNN_Users, has a creation date of 7/10/2007What factor could have caused that create date to have changed? What factors go into the date being set on that column in the database design? Does the date get updated say if I were go go in and change a datatype in a table?
Sorry if this is a super-basic question...I'm used to join selects but not sure how to approach an append select (or something like it) I have two tables with identical field structures: a Master table with 10,000 rows and a Custom table table with 1,000 rows To keep it simple, let's say the two tables each have a FirstName field and a LastName Field. Is it possible to use a View or a Select statement (or any other method) to 'append' the rows of both tables so that the result set still has only the two columns (FirstName and LastName) and has 11,000 rows? Thanks for your help! Randy
SELECT e1.EntityIdentity as CompanyID FROM dbo.Entitye1 --company JOIN dbo.EntityAssociationea ON e1.EntityID = ea.EntityID1 JOIN dbo.Entitye2 --user ON ea.EntityID2 = e2.EntityID
This query occurs as a sub-query in many stored procedures where exists a WHERE clause that includes CompanyID IN (above query).
Since dbo.Entity and dbo.EntityAssociation change infrequently I thought that an indexed view would really improve performance. But I've found one of the seemingly undocumented Microsoft features when trying to create the clustered index and get the following error msg:
Msg 1947, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Cannot create index on view "ROICore.dbo.vEntityEntityAssociation_CompanyUser". The view contains a self join on "ROICore.dbo.Entity".
I really need to improve performance on this subquery. Entity currently has over 20m rows and EntityAssociation over 35m rows and both are growing.
How to improve performance? Indexes on both tables for the most part give index seeks, but I thought my saviour might be the index view. Obviously this will not work.
I'm new to my company, although not new to SQL 2005 and I found something interesting. I don't have an ERD yet, and so I was asking a co-worker what table some data was in, they told me a table that is NOT in SQL Server 2005's list of tables, views or synonyms.
I thought that was strange, and so I searched over and over again and still I couldn't find it. Then I did a select statement the table that Access thinks exists and SQL Server does not show and to my shock, the select statement pulled in data!
So how did this happen? How can I find the object in SSMS folder listing of tables/views or whatever and what am I overlooking?
I have a application where users are supposed to edit data from a table in a datagrid.
I want to use a dropdownlist to let the user choose a table to edit.
The users are members of different windows-goupes and different users have only access to edit there own tables. Let's say that they own data in different tables.
Is it possible to use windows authentication to find out what tables to show in the dropdownlist?
I have to import some Access 2003 tables into a SQL Server 2005. Since I have to do this every 6 months (different Access db into same SQL-Server) and since I have to check every single row I can't do it with the import data wizzard. I need to import the access tables into "temporary" tables in sql server and from there I'll put the rows into the correct tables...
Does anyone know how to import Access tables into SQL-Server 2005 with C#?
hi. this is a beginner question as i am new to databases :)so, I have an access database and I want to take 2 tables from it and copy it to sql server in my ASP.NET application (.MDF file)I have visual studio 2005 installed on my computer and got no sql server 2005 installed on it. what is the way copy 2 tables to the ASP.NET database application?thanks alot guys.
My manager told me to link SQL Server database tables to access so that he can access the tables in MSAccess to do his SQL queries. I am thinking of linking server but I am not sure about that. Is someone can tell me what to do and explain me how. Thanks in advance Sincerely. David
Hello, We are currently live with a CRM solution (Siebel) that uses SQL Server 6.5 as the back end. All is fine and dandy, except I have some reservations about security. Quite simply, it is possible for anyone to open up MS Access and link to any of the SQL Server database tables via the ODBC DSN used by the Siebel front end. This DSN is necessary for Siebel to function. I am bit worried that someone (out of incompetence or spite) might do just that and cause some serious damage. Its probably technically beyond the large proportion of our users (especially those that could make mistakes!), but I can't get the nagging fear out of my head. Does anyone know of anyway to combat this problem? I have scoured the web, including this site, and cant seem to get any information on this. Thanks and Regards Dike
is it possible to define in sql server linked tables to odbc data sources as it is possible to do in access? except Access and vfp, is there another database that allows to create linked tables to odbc data sources?
I need to combine in a database native tables with odbc linked tables, but it would need to use a database more powerful that access or vfp
I am trying to add a linked table to my server, it is an access table.
Here is the code i am using but i get an error: EXEC sp_addlinkedserver @server = 'AITdb_be2', @provider = 'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0', @srvproduct = 'Access', @datasrc = '\kcapp03deptsCommonEIQAIT DBTestAITdb_be.mdb' GO

I am trying to export a databse from access into sql server express. The access database is on a network and the sql server express is on my local machine.
Could someone give me setp by step instructions please as to how to export the data from the tables into my sql server express.
Looks like the Office 2003 MS Access has no support for creating a linked server and implement design changes. While you could link to the SQL 2005 tables, which show up as queries in MS Access 2003, any further use of the linked queries are not supported unless the Access 2003 version came out after the SQL 2005 release. What kind of an update is needed, or fix is needed so that Access projects can be developed?
I have an app that creates and attaches tables from SQL Server into an Access mdb using an ODBC link from VB6 using DAO 3.51 on Windows 2000. Recently I upgraded to SQL Server Express edition and tested it. It worked fine against the Express Edition. So, I installed SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition on our Server hoping that they operate identically. How wrong one can be! the same code that worked against Express Edition does not work on Standard Edition.
It is strange that the App works for about 5 seconds which attaches about 38 tables and after that the connection drops and I have a hell of a time to get the rest of the tables linked. The error that comes up is:
Connection failed: SQLState: '01000' SQL Server Error: 10060 [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][TCP/IP Sockets]ConnectionOpen (connect()). Connection failed: SQLState: '08001' SQL Server Error: 11 [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][TCP/IP Sockets]General network error. Check your network documentation.
The PC that I am using to connect is in a different domain to the Server where the SQL Server database resides. I thought that domains might be the reason. But even joining the PC to the same domain as the server still does not work and behaves the same. So I do not think it is a domain related issue.
I have also looked at the SQL Server and database configurtaions. I cannot see anywhere any specific time out of around 5 seconds. Even the time out through the SQL Server ODBC driver is set to 30 seconds by default as far as I know. So, it looks like there is a time out somewhere but I am absolutely confused as to where this 5 second time out is comming from.
I also thought permissions on the database or tables might be the issue but after looking at the database and table permissions, they all look OK. The user has prettymuch the same access as the SA on the database.
Has anybody came across this problem? If so, I appreciate if someboday can give me a hint as to where I can start.
I have an MS-Access database on a shared drive. The Access database has tables linked to a SQL server database. When I try to query the tables in MS-Access database by accessing the share drive,I get the ODBC--call failed error. So I tried creating an ODBC driver for the SQL Server and when I try to link the tables,no tables are displayed. Can anyone help me out with this problem?
I am using two almost idential laptops, one with XP and one with Vista, the only differences is that the XP laptop has 1G of RAM and running Office XP and the Vista has 2G RAM and is running Office 2007.
I have a MS Access database that has linked tables to a SQL Server 2000 database. The performance of the Access database on Vista is 5-10 times slower on the Vista machine. Just flipping through records or opening forms can take 5 - 15 seconds on the Vista machine while the XP machine takes 1 sec or less.
What gives? I looked at the CPU performance and the network performance while the Access database was busy flipping through records, the network traffic was < 2% and the CPU would spike to 40% on one of the CPUs (dual core) but would remain under 5% most of the time.
I also previously had Office XP installed on the Vista machine and it had the same performance issue so bought and install Office 2007 on the Vista machine and it did not solve the problem.
It seems that Vista is doing something that is slowing down Access with linked tables. Is this a issue between Vista and using an ODBC connection to SQL Server?
create a new Connection Manager by right-clicking in the Connection Managers section of the design area of the screen. Select New OLE DB Connection to bring up the Configure OLE DB Connection Manager dialog box. Click New to open the Connection Manager. In the Provider drop-down list, choose the Microsoft Jet 4.0 OLE DB Provider and click OK. Browse to the Access database file and connection set up---all good!!!
Dataflow task Add an OLE DB Source component Double-click the icon to open the OLE DB Source Editor. Set the OLE DB Connection Manager property to the Connection Manager that I created . Select Table from the Data Access Mode drop-down list. I cannot see the tables set up as set up as pass-through table types to a Oracle 9i db

Im considering several options as to where to place the SQL Server and the web server in our organization's network I would like to hear your insights about the subject and the following options:
Option 1: Placing the SQL Server inside the domain while the web servers are outside in the DMZ
Pros: SQL Server is in the domain, its harder to hack and its easier to manage inside the domain
Cons:the DMZ must allow access inside the domain so that the web servers can access the SQL Server this is not very secure.
Option 2: Placing both SQL Server and the web servers in the DMZ
Pros: Fast access from web servers to the SQL Server. no traffic is allowed from the DMZ into the domain so the domain is completely secured.
Cons: The SQL Server is not very secured, its harder to administer it outside the domain.
I am using MS Access 2003 SP2 to maintain some data tables. I use SSIS to transfer them to SQL Server 2005, Enterprise Edition.
When I run the SSIS package from within Visual Studio 2005, the package runs without error.
When I try to run the same SSIS package by double-clicking on it in my File System (which invokes the Execute Package Utility, Version: 1.0) none of the tables get copied. Instead all I receive is a message for each table,
Error: SSIS Error Code DTS_E_PRODUCTLEVELTOLOW. The product level is insufficient for component "Data Conversion 1" (49).
The only data conversion I perform is double-byte characters to single-byte characters.
Bob Bojanic, MSFT, made a few suggestions about this in another thread -- but I have created this new thread to help focus on this specific issue. In particular, he asked if we have installed the complete SSIS support for SQL Server 2005, Enterprise Edition, and my network support and database support staff assure me that such complete SSIS support was installed.
Are others having this problem?
Dan
(I just took a look at some of the transformations in the Data Conversion task, and many of them are using an Output Alias identical to the Input Column name. Might that be causing the problem? I will try changing the Output Alias for some tables and see if they then transfer correctly. The "identical name" Output Alias values were created by the Migration Wizard for a DTS 2000 package.)
