Hi,
we are running a Windows Application(.Net 2.0) against a MS SQL Server 2000 on WinXP. The application is able to succesefully connect to Database and execute "smaller stored procedure". The application also must execute a stored proc that returns 2M rows for export into a flat file.
When executing the stored proc from a remote box with 512M or less RAM(slow box), the application receives the error:
A transport-level error has occurred when receiving results from the server. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - The specified network name is no longer available.)
If a box has 1G or RAM or more, application seems running fine.
Now, I have the application running on a slow box, watching memory usage, and it seems fine - the memory acquired by the application never exceded 39M of RAM, so I'm still not clear why connection is being closed.
Also, there seem to be no mesages from MS SQL server in Event Log.
The problem is that I have to make the app run on a "slow box".
Any ideas or comments are appreciated (somebody, please, help me ;-) )

Hi,
This is a very bizzare one. I have installed SQL many times and never had this problem. I had a user self install SQL 2005, as it turns out, he installed the wrong components, so a co-worker uninstalled it for him. We followed the support doc for the uninstall, because we had errors when tried to remove it.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/909967
After, we were able to re-install (we installed this time via the command line), but for some odd reason we have completely lost the ability to print to ANY network printer. I didn't think this was possible, but I tried it on my machine and now I too am unable to print!
A couple of details:
Both machines:
XP-SP2
HP dx7400
Printers: a variety of HP Networked Printers (can't print to any)
I have added and removed the printers multiple times and tried adding via a local port... no luck
There is no error in the event log
If I try to print a test page, I get an error box that says "Test Page Failed to Print"
Since there are no real errors for the print issue, I am struggling to find a solution. Has anyone ever seen this??
Thanks!
Dria

Problem: We have intermittent failures of SQL Server jobs with the following error -
TCP Provider: The specified network name is no longer available. [SQLSTATE 08S01]
Communication link failure [SQLSTATE 08S01]
Types of job steps failing: DBCC Checkdb, LiteSpeed backups, re-indexing sql in stored procs, home-grown database update stored procs. These types of job steps are failing on 3 different servers in a 4-way active cluster although all 4 servers have the same type of job steps. No steps involved attempt cross-server processes, job only uses its own server and SAN.
Environment: 4-way active IA64bit cluster Windows 2003 datacenter running SQL2005 RTM. All 4 nodes attached to EMC Clarion SAN.
What we have already looked at: No additonal messages in event viewers. SQL Agent additional logging shows same error. Network services has monitored and sees nothing. Network services is current on firmware upgrades (just applied last batch 2 weeks ago) and still got 2 more errors after the upgrades. I've seen other postings (with no solutions) where people have same error with SQL2000 through SQL2005 SP2, so i don't believe SP2 will help this.

Hi,
I have been working for a few weeks on a local SQL server (express) on my computer all worked ok, until 2 days ago I got the following error message:
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Shared Memory Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) (.Net SqlClient Data Provider)
Where can I find the setting for remote connections? Also any idea why this happened?

Hi we have a table with about 400000 records in it. It starting to take longer and longer to add a new record. I was thinking of creating another identical table and archiving off most of the records every month (we are now adding about about 4000 records a day) . Is this the best thing to do?
I don't know a lot about sql server so any help or suggestions would be great

I am having difficulty getting both xp_cmdshell and the Scripting.FileSystem to work via sp_OACreate/sp_OAMethod with files residing on network drives . I am able to create/move/copy/delete files on local drives through both of these methods, but when I specify a network drive as the target an operation requiring write access I get an "Access is Denied" error. I recognize that the SQLServer service account is being used to perform these operations, and I have granted Full control permissions to this user on the directory I'm trying to perform the operation on. Is there some other permission either on the SQLServer or Windows account that is required to enable write access from T-SQL?

Everything was working fine. I have been able to connect using windows authentication. Then, I went into the ODBC manager to add a data source and it failed to connect so I went back into the Server management studio to modify users. After doing this I now get an error when I try to conenct the management studio to the SQL server.
I wasn't modifying the login for my windows account that I normally use, I was modifying a different one, however I now get the message "An error has occured while establishing a connection to the SQL server. This kind of problem can ocure because the default behavior of the server does not support all connection methods" blah blah.
Does anyone know how I can attach to the server? Or, do I need to somehow remove the server and create a new one? How would I do that?
Thanks in advance for any input.

Hi!
I wrote an application which connects to a SQL Server / MSDE 2000 DB through ADO components. Now the application doesn't start if I don't have an active network connection; as far as I try to connect, the error I get is:
[DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen (Connect()).].........
Everything is ok if I simply plug the network cable and let the PC connect to the TCP/IP network.
Hope someone can help me!
Thanks

I have notebook, client server application and sql express sp2 on this notebook.
Also, I know domain user login/password,
but I don't know any local user name/password
and I don't know any sql server user name/password.
Domain user is not a local administrator on this notebook.
When notebook connected to the office LAN I am working good with my app-> my sql express as a domain/user.
I'd like to work at home too. I can logon to the system (XP SP2) using domain account when notebook has no network connection. (probably OS caches something)
Is it possible to work with sql express using domain login when no network connection?
PS. old version of this software used MSDE 2000 and it was possible(!).
Thank you.

I am able to connect to reportserver from within the network. However I am unable to connect to reportserver from outside of network.
I am using the syntax http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:1433/reportserver where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx denotes the ip adress and the 1433 denotes the port
Reportserver is on a windows 2003 small business server. I added exceptions to my firewalll and checked all permissions to the physical directories. I am sure it is a simple issue but cannot figure it out.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,
I am hoping you will be of assistance to me and provide a little advice on what exactly is possible using SQL Express / SQL Server 2005 with regards to remotely connecting to a server.
I am a final year undergraduate student studying computing sciences in the UK. As a final year project I am attempting to create a client-server database, where the client (a WM5 PDA) can connect to an SQL server hosted on a different machine (a PC). However, I must be able to connect to the server when the PDA is being used on any Wi-Fi connection.
Basically I want the PDA to be able to connect to a database kept on the PC at home when you're out and about using the PDA's wi-fi.
Is this possible? If so, could you explain in 'dummy' terminology how one would go about this?
As my university is part of the MS Academic Alliance I have access to VS 2005 and SQL Server 2005 for this project.
Many thanks for your time and I eagerly await your responses!
Simon

Is there a limitation in sql server 2005 express that it does not accept connections via the network? I am trying to develop a web application running the web server as a VM but I can't connect to the sql server on the host machine. Similarly, I can't create an ODBC connection on the VM, but I can on the host. I could install sql express on the VM, that is probably the next thing I'll try.

Hi,
We are running a software which has a sql database and it runs a data cycle everyday in which it gets data from several other sql servers on our network.
Recently we have starting receiving the following errors during this run;
Network Error IOException: Connection Timed Out: Connect
It finishes most of the queries in the script, but on some (and not always the same tables) it gives the time out error. I am not quit sure where or how to research this problem.
Any ideas are welcome!
Thanks,

I'm green on this networking stuff so any help is greatly appreciated.
I have setup my home computer as a server and assigned a static IP to it. I installed SQL Server 2005 Developer and allowed remote connections to it through the Surface Area Config tool, added port 1433 TCP and 1434 UDP to firewall's exception list, and started the SQL Server Browser service.
Now I can't seem to remote connect to this SQL Server from my office network. Is there something I'm doing wrong here?
Thanks!!
