I think I may have figured out the solution to my recent conundrum with SQL Server 2000 that had me stressed and depressed over the last couple of days. In a nutshell, after a HotFix was installed on a SQL2K database server I have space on, I was unable to perform INSERT or UPDATE queries on database table of type TEXT, when trying to either create or modify records with more than 4,000 characters of data. While it was frustrating as heck, it seemed too rigid to be random, so I did some snooping.
The HotFix was intended to solve a known problem of not being able to run UPDATEs against TEXT fields, but in so doing, caused another headache entirely: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=839523
Apparently this is a semi-known problem, in that a certain HotFix forces SQL Server 2000 to be a lot more stringent in requiring explicit declaration of data types and data lengths for parameters in stored procedure. In my client code, I was initially using the overloaded constructor of the SqlParameter object that took as arguments only the parameter name and a value, without specifying a value from the SQLDBType enumeration or length of the parameter (which in my case, needs to be TEXT and 16 (or 2147483647), respectively):
System.Data.SqlDataAdapter.InsertCommand.Parameters.Add(new SqlParameter("@parameterName",parameterValue);
It appears that after the HotFix is installed, if the client doesn’t syntactically set the type and length of data for a parameter, SQL Server and/or .NET will default to a type of NVARCHAR, which has the 4,000-character limit. This all makes sense. I’m going to now need to modify the code to straight out declare what’s going in the SPROC:
System.Data.SqlDataAdapter.InsertCommand.Parameters.Add(new SqlParameter("@parameterName",SqlDbType.Text);
System.Data.SqlDataAdapter.InsertCommand.Parameters["@parameterName"].Value = parameterValue;
It’s a minor change, and it sucks that I have to make it after the code had worked flawlessly over several thousands executions over several months, but c’est la vie! Better thay than have to rebuild my DB from scratch or switch to a new server. Changing the client code evidently is the only known fix at this time: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb%3ben-us%3b827366

Hi All,
We recently did the in-place upgrade of SQL 2000 server having the hotfix - 8.00.2191 (Intel IA-64). The server got upgraded successfully without any error and everything seems to work. However, after the upgrade the SQL 2000 hotfix -2191 - didn't get uninstalled. I would like to know :-
1. How we can remove this hotfix? if we remove from add
emove programs it doesn't get removed.
2. If we don't remove will it cause any problem?
Any help is highly appreciated.
Thanks,
Ritesh

Our company currently use Microsoft SQL Enterprise Manager 8.0,
SQL Query Analyzer 8.00.194.
Do we need to upgrade to later version?
If we do, what kind of problem/effect we may have?
Will it make any difference of SQL Server performance?
Please give your opinion.
Thank you.

I am a freelance programmer and just picked up a client that has an instance of SQL Server. I just need to know if the Developer edition (I've seen it as low as $49) will function adequately for me to test the application I'm writing.
The test environment will be 2 PC's, 'A' running the server and 'B' the one I'm writing the software on. I need to configure comp 'A' to mirror the client's WAN and how various client's comps will access the database with the application I'm writing on comp 'B'. I don't need a full-blown liscense for the database, as I won't be keeping it after production is finished. I just need one I can connect to and configure for development testing without having to develope the software on-site.

I know this is old database but when I download this evaluation from microsoft website, I got problem installing it. First, I unzip it. By default, it is unzip to C:SQLEVAL. Then, I went to install it. I don't which file I should click. So, I double click the autorun file. When I did that, there is a screen, I saw the screen saying "microsoft SQL Server 2000 Evaluation version". Then, I click "SQL Server 2000 Components"
Then, it comes to next page, and I click "Install Database Server". But after I did that, nothing happens! After I click again the same thing all over again, it says "Another instance of setup is already running".
I'm using Window XP Professional. Anyone encounter this problem before? I tried to re-download the file and reinstall but also the same problem. Really need help. Thanks.

I'm trying to rebuild from a meltdown. I'm using disk backup files. Icould have sworn that I had SQL Server 2000 SP3 installed on the oldmachine, but maybe not.With SP3 installed, I get a message along the lines that the restorecan't be done because the backup was created using server version134218262 and this server is version 134218488.I've searched the documentation and can't find any reference to thoseversion numbers.In any case, I thought SQL Server 2000 could restore backups createdon any SP level to any SP level.Any ideas?--Regards.Richard.

Is there any way to restore a database of higher version to lower version.
E.g. I have created a database in sql server 2012, created some tables & procedures in that.I took Full backup of that database. Can I restore it to sql 2008r2 or any lower version.
I know direct restore is not possible, I have to use either import or export option or generating script,but i want to know is there any easy step to do so.

Hi all,
Since some analysis services features are only available in Enterprise version , I have to upgrade my SQL 2005 server from standard edition to enterpise edition.
So I uninstall originial standard version of analysis service and install a Enterprise version. However, the analysis service is still a standard version after installation.
Is it possible to keep data engine as standard version and install a enterprise version of analysis service?
Thank you very much

Hello,I have been searching and reading a lots of information on the microsoft website about the different version of SQL server, but still can not make my decision.In term of performance, is there a real big difference between the workgroup and the standard version? The workgroup is limited to 3 GB of RAM while the standard is unlimited, would that really change the performance if my server has 16Gb or RAM?The price difference is pretty substantial so if could only have to buy the workgroup , it would be better.One more question, regarding the type of licence, my server has 2 processors, could I avoid buying 2 licences and get the Server plus CAL instead. I am using this server to host 4 web-application running on SQL server. Each database is about 15 MB.Thanks in adavance for your advises.Arno

I am wondering if it is possible to change from SQL Server Enterprise Evaluation Version to Developer Version. The reason is because the Enterprise Evaluation version expires after 180 days. So if I create reports and cubes in Enterprise Evaluation I can import them into Developer Edition right? Should I remove the Enterprise Evaluation version after 180 days or leave it then install Developer Edition?

We have a 64bit os machine that we accidently loaded the 32 bit version of sql server on. We now want to upgrade it to 64 bit sql server, but we now have a production database on it. My understanding is that all I have to do is detach the production database, upgrade to 64bit sql server, then reattach the database. Is this really all I have to do?

Can some one here give me more insight about how to upgrade a SQL Server 2005 Standard Version (32 bits) to a SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Version (32 bits) as default instance on a Windows 2003 enterprise OS (32 bits). I want to know what is the easist way and what is the safest way. May I preserve some settings I have for the STD version, or I have to start from strach again to configure the server? Is there any catches, anything I should have attention to (We are using heavily about CLR and fulltext indexing)?
Thanks a milliom

I installed the SQL Server 2k EnterPrise version and developer version on the same version, and the developer version is an instance "Development".
How do I expose both of them to internet? Just open both of them to port 1433? And on the client side, just say IP and IP/Development? Do I need specific set up, will they conflict?
Thanks,

I downloaded the 101 Samples installation (i.e. 101SamplesCS.msi) from Microsoft's website, which contains SQL Server database files.
While working with the databases in the "Data Access" samples from the 101 Samples projects, I get the following error:
"Database <mdf_name> cannot be upgraded because its non-release version (600) is not supported by this version of SQL Server. You cannot open a database that is incompatible with this version of sqlservr.exe. You must re-create the database..."
I assume the database files were created with a beta or CTP version of SQL Server 2005. Does anyone know where I can get an updated version of these database files or scripts to update them?
Please help.
Mike.

We are moving all databases from a SQL version 7 server to a version 2000server. Which of the following is the preferred method?1) Detach the DB on the version 7 server, move it to the new server viaWindows Explorer and reattach it there.2) Use SQL Enterprise Mananger with the DTS Export Wizard to "copy objects &data between SQL server databases" from the version 7 server to the 2000server.With the changing of the version, I thought maybe option 2 is best.
