Why Are The Advanced Options Greyed Out, In The Connection Configuration
Jan 30, 2008
I have added several SqlDataSource controls to my C# project, but when I try to configure them, there seems to be a lot of greyed out buttons. Either the WHERE, ORDER BY, and ADVANCED buttons are greyed out, or when they are active, the ADVANCED button always displays the advabced options which are always greyed out. I doesn't make any sense to me. Please explain (in baby language please)

While configuring a TableAdapter I noticed that the option "Create methods to send updates directly to the database (GenerateDBDirectMethods)" is greyed out.Can a TableAdapter only have one table in order to create the methods for sending the updates directly to the database?If so, what is the work-around?The TableAdapter that I am trying to create uses the following statement to fill its DataTable:SELECT Client.Name, Users.FirstName, Users.LastNameFROM Users INNER JOIN Client ON Users.ClientId = Client.IdThanks for your response in advance!

Why did Microsoft release a replacement for MSDE called SQL 2005 Express with Advanced Options without the SQL Agent? I bought into the MSDE and got rid of the other databases we supported now we have to go a create an equivilent to the SQL Agent for a) scheduled jobs b) backup automation. c) etc.
Does anybody really want a database that does not have these built in? I understand I can do these myself but this seems to defy logic to me?
thanks,
Larry

I would like redistribute SQL 05 EPRX in a small application; trying something other than Access database. I have the program written and I have query that requires the advanced ad hoc queries setting to be one. I am wondering if anyone can point me to an article that explains how I can adjust these settings so they will install through my setup file properly.

Generally bulk insert is used to insert bulk data from flat files or csv files into database tables. Thats good. But while inserting the data into table, if the schema of the table changes (say a column is added or removed) then are there any options for inserting the same data, with some changes, into the database table...
My work is to take backup of the tables and insert them to a new database with some changes in schema like adding a column or removing a column.

In SQL 2000, the following message is logged to the NT event log every time the sp_configure 'show advanced options' command is executed. This did NOT occurr in SQL 7.
"Error: 15457, Severity: 0, State: 1
Configuration option 'show advanced options' changed from 1 to 1. Run the RECONFIGURE statement to install."
Does anyone know if I can turn OFF the event logging of this message. It is confusing to the end users of our product that uses SQL 2000 as a back-end. Some of our product's code issues the sp_configure command that causes this message. It shows up as an informational message, but then the first word in the text is "Error:". I think I'll be getting a lot of support calls about this if I can't figure out a way to make it stop writting this to the event log :(
Any insight or suggestions would be most appreciated.

I am looking to make the primary key auto increment by 1. I have found by looking around the internet that you need to do this in the Tables -> [Table Name] -> Columns -> [Column Name], Properties window, and I see the "Identity Increment" however all of the properties there are greyed out -- I can't access them. Any ideas on how to make this work?For some background: I'm running SQL Server 2005 with Visual Studio 2005. To create this database, I right-clicked on my project, and went to 'Add SQL Database', I filled in the columns all from within visual studio.

On Visual Studio 2013 with SSDT for SQL Server 2014
I noticed something very strange.
I am viewing the package configuration selected option for a package:
Now, i just click on the - sign and then on the plus sign on the "Properties" branch. And the option is cleared:
The ONLY way i found not to mess everything is just to have ALL the options FULL expanded and THEN to select what i want.

in ASP.NET?
for each item in

"<td>" & item.name & "</td>" &

There are a few questions I have on the parameters you can use in a connection string. I didn't see a post with these already, and I think they may be helpful for those just starting to figure out how things work. I couldn't seem to find these defined in the msdn anywhere. What exactly do the following do:
"server=.\sqlexpress;" or "data source=.\sqlexpress;" - Is there a difference in using these, or are they completely interchangeable without any side effects? So far it seems I have been able to swap them for each other without anything happening however there may be something I don't see happening behind the scenes!
"Trusted_Connection=yes;" - Is this a workaround for getting SQL Server to work on vista's UAC or something? If not what does it do?
"Integrated Security=true;" - I know this has to be used with User Instance=true, but is there anywhere that says what it's actual function is?
"database=myDB;" - If I use this in a string it causes my program to crash. It also has a side effect of making me have to stop all sqlservr.exe processes and restart the service before my program will run again without it included in the string. Not sure why this is the case, however here is the string I try to use:
Code Snippetstring connStr="server=.\sqlexpress;AttachDbFilename="c:\sfsf\sads\myDB.mdf";database=myDB;Trusted_Connection=Yes;";
Now with using that string, the point of having both the "AttachDbFilename="c:\sfsf\sads\myDB.mdf";" and the "database=myDB;" options is that I read if you use those together it causes the SQL Server to first check and see if the database is already attached. If it is then it doesn't reattach the database, and just uses the current attached database. While this makes sense it doesn't seem to work for me since as I stated above anytime I use the database option it crashes the app. Any ideas? If that isn't how it is used what is the "database=" option for?
There may be more options I don't know about yet, but those are the ones I am not clear on. Hopefully one of you more experienced folks and shed some light on them!

Hi,,
when I open a connection to SQL Server 2005 (c#, VB.NET 2005, SQL Native Client) these setting are set (can see it in Profiler):
-- network protocol: TCP/IP
set quoted_identifier on
set arithabort off
set numeric_roundabort off
set ansi_warnings on
set ansi_padding on
set ansi_nulls on
set concat_null_yields_null on
set cursor_close_on_commit off
set implicit_transactions off
set language us_english
set dateformat mdy
set datefirst 7
set transaction isolation level read committed
I would like ARITHABORT to be ON. Have tryied to set it as a defaul in my database, but still the connection has OFF at this setting.
How can I force my C# code to set this option to ON during connection opening?
Thanks,

Hi,
I'm having a BIG problem, this is my 3rd day looking for answer !I'm trying to create a custom membership provider with MS SQL database 2005 but not the default ASPNETDB. I've changed the web.config to be as following:<connectionStrings><add name="sqlConn" connectionString="Data Source=.;Integrated Security=True;Initial Catalog=ASPNETDB;"providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" /></connectionStrings> <system.web><trace enabled="true" /><roleManager enabled="true" /><authentication mode="Forms" />
<membership defaultProvider="MySqlProvider"><providers><remove name="AspNetSqlProvider"/><add name="MySqlProvider" connectionStringName="SqlConn" type="System.Web.Security.SqlMembershipProvider" applicationName="/" /></providers></membership>
But when I try to login to the site using the login control the following error occurs:

I have been trying to host my website on Go Daddy for about 3 weeks and I have cleared several problems but this one remains. I can get into the ASPNETDB database for doing logins , etc but I cant access my database called "PINEmgt".
To try to understand where the problem is located,I built a very simple application without login controls and put on it one Detailform accessing a single line table "Signin". I continually get the error message I got with my real app :"The connection name 'PINEMgtConnectionString2' was not found in the applications configuration or the connection string is empty. " There is only one connection string in my app -'PINEMgtConnectionString2'. When I run the app locally on my machine it works. After I move everything to Go Daddy, I get the error message and the following dump"

Line 27: InsertCommand="INSERT INTO Signup(first_name, last_name, email, customer_id) VALUES (,,,)"
Line 28: SelectCommand="SELECT * FROM [Signup]"></aspqlDataSource>
This is indeed the code from my single page app.
The dump is:

In SQL Visual Basic 2005 Express Edition, I was wondering if it is possible in the Add Connection dialog under Advanced settings to change the Data Source SQL server from the local .sqlexpress to a network SQL Express server. It seems as though the option is locked. I am in a doman, and using Windows Authentication. I also have TCP/IP enabled on the SQL server, and no firewall restrictions for the SQL service. Also, my account permissions should also allow me to do this.

Before you begin swearing.......
I have a VS2005 application developed against SQL Server Developer whose target database system is SQLE. Last night I downloaded SQL and built the datbase. I can connect to and manipulate the database easily with the Studio Management Console. The intention is to use SQLE locally. I can't connect programmatically to the local SQLE server.
I have used the surface config monitor and turned on all protocols except VIA. I've also been through with the configuration manager. I can connect via the Studio Management Console using the information in the connection string which is:
Server=BLISS/MHASQLE;Initial Catalog=KJS;User ID=aaaaa; Password=bbbbbb; Trusted_Connection=false;
When I reached my limit I sent it a moderator who is an SQL Expert. He had the project and database and was also unable to connect, getting the same error.
"An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)"

Back home at my office I built an ASP.net app that successfully connected to my SQL Server 2000 database, which resides on a different computer from my laptop, which is my development machine.
I'm now traveling and wanted to keep on working. So I installed SQL Server 2005 Express and successfully restored my database on it. But I'm having problems making the initial connection to the database.
In the Web.config file I have these pertinent variables:
<appSettings>
<add key="DataBaseServer" value="server"/>
<add key="DataBase" value="Incentives"/>
<add key="UserId" value="sa"/>
<add key="Password" value=""/>
</appSettings>
And back home, everything works fine. So I thought the obvious thing to change was the value of "DataBaseServer". My laptop's name is "RMDW" so I first tried that. Didn't work. Then I tried "RMDWSQLEXPRESS". Didn't work. Then I tried "localhost". Didn't work. Finally I tried "localhostSQLEXPRESS". Didn't work.
I'm thinking that perhaps I have the syntax wrong. But also, when I did install SQL Express I chose "Windows Authentication" mode and am thinking now that I shouldn't have.
Might anyone have any ideas to help me resolve this?

Hi, I dont know if I should post this question here, or on oracle forums, but here goes ...
I made a simple package that performs 2 Excecute SQL Tasks, one task does a select query on a SQL Server DB Table, the other task does a select query on an Oracle DB Table.
The package runs fine in BIDS when debugging, but when I deployed the package to a file system and added it to an sql server agent Job, it all went wrong ...
I tried the ms oledb dataprovider (ole db) for oracle but also the oracleclient data provider (ado.net) but the package always fails.

Failed to acquire connection "aaa.bbb.oracleClient". Connection may not be configured correctly or you may not have the right permissions on this connection.
the OnError logrow for the package itself says almost the same.
Now my question is: What do I need to configure to get it all working? I think I need to configure the oracle db no? What should I configure? ...

Greetings All;
I am having trouble getting an indirect configuration to work. Can someone offer a hand?
Here's the deal....
I have a package the currently has an OLE DB Connection manager. I have an XML configuration file set up to acquire the connection string. That works fine. I have a package variable that contains the absolute path to the .dtsconfig file.
How can I get the connection manager to read the package variable (which has the path to the *.dtsconfig file) instead of the hard coded value?
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
A couple of small questions for anyone who can help. I am writing an application and am a newbie with SQL Server 2005 Express Edition and Visual C# (using Visual Studio 2005 pro).
My application will need to run on 6 different PC's at one time with our office server hosting the database. Since the server is hosting the database, is it necessary for the individual PC's to have SQL Server 2005 Express Edition installed on their hard drives also to communiucate back to the server?
Also, where can I find some nice example code for connecting and performing some simple tasks under C#?

Hello,
I am new to SSIS. Could someone please tell me how to make the Connection Manager use the connection string from the configuration file?
I am trying to have connection information set in one place for all the packages to use.
I have already created a .dtsConfig file based on my existing Connection Managers.
Do I need seperate dtsConfig files for each database?
Thank you.
