Why It Takes Forever To Execute Stored Procedure In Reporting Services?
Sep 17, 2007
I used a stored procedure in my report. If I run the sp in Management Studio (on my pc, database is on a sql server) it takes only several minutes; but from reporting services (also on pc) I put it in the data tab and execute it, it takes forever, actually never finish. I want to know why it's taking so long to execute it from reporting services while it returns data instantly from Mgt Studio. There is cursor in the sp. I don't know whether this is the culprit. Anyone knows why? Thanks!
Below is the sp.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
UPDATE CD SET col1=SR.col1,col2=SR.col2,col3=SR.col3,col4=SR.col4,col5=SR.col5,col6=SR.col6,col7=SR.col7,
col8=SR.col8,col9=SR.col9,col10=SR.col10
FROM LNKSQL1.db1.DBO.Table1 CD
join Table2 USRI on USRI.col00 = CD.col00
join table3 SR on USRI.col00 = SR.col00
Here, I'm trying to tun this from an instance and do a remote update. col00 is a primary key and there is a clustered index that exists on this column. When I run this query, it does a 'select * from tabl1' on the remote server and that table has about 60 million rows. I don't understand why it would do a select *... Also, we migrated to SQL 2005 a week or so back but before that everything was running smooth. I dont have the execution plan from before but this statement was fast. Right now, I can't run this statement at all. It takes about 37 secs to do one update. But if I did the update on a local server doing remote joins here, it would work fine. When I tried to show the execution plan, it took about 10 mins to show up an estimated plan and 99% of the time was spent on Remote scan. Please let me know what I can do to improve my situation. Thank you
We have a MS SQL Server 6.5 database table with 643,000 records. There are several indexes including some clustered indexes.
We do a statement: update wo set udf3 = '1234567890123456' where woid = '123'
this returns immediately.
Then we try the same statement where the string is 1 character longer and it takes 45 minutes to return. There is no indication of what the server is doing during this time.
There is no index on UDF3 and WOID is the primary key.
Any suggestions what is happening? What can we do to correct it? DBCC CheckTable finds no errors.

I have a Stored Procedure that has a query in it and it take 0 second and then a stored procedure that takes 16 seconds. From what I can tell they shoul be the same.
It doesn't recompile when i run the stored procedure, I checked that.
Hi, I got a weird problem. I've created a sp that takes in the query analyzer 7 seconds to run. When i put in my code dataAdapter.Fill(dataSet.Tables(0)) it takes forever to finish!! What's going on? Any thoughts highly appreciated. t.i.a.,ratjetoes.
I'm having a problem with an update operation in a stored procedure. Itruns so slowly that it is unusable, unless I comment a part out in whichcase it is very fast. However, I need the whole thing :). I have atable of email addresses of people who want to get invited to parties. Each row contains information like email address, city, state, country, and preferences for what types of events are of interest. The primary key is an EMAILID, and has a unique constraint on the emailfield. The stored procedure receives the field data as arguments, andinserts the record if the email address passed is not in the database. This works perfectly. However, if the stored procedure is called for anemail address that already exists, it updates the existing row insteadof doing an insert. This way I can build a web page that lets peoplemodify their preferences, opt in and out of the list and so on.If I am doing an update, the stored procedure runs SUPER SLOW (and thepage times out) unless I comment out the part of the update statementfor city, state, country and zipcode. However, I really need to be ableto update this!My database has 29 million rows.Thank you for telling me anything about how I can speed up this update! Here is the SQL statement to run the stored procedure:declare @now datetime;set @now = GetUTCDate();EXEC usp_EMAIL_Subscribe @Email='dberman@sen.us', @OptOutDate=@now,@Opt_GenInterest=1, @Opt_DatePeople=0, @Opt_NewFriends=1,@Opt_OldFriends=0, @Opt_Business=1, @Opt_Couples=0, @OptOut=0,@Opt_Events=0, @City='Boston', @State='MA', @ZCode='02215',@Country='United States'Here is the stored procedure:SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ONGOSET ANSI_NULLS ONGOALTER PROCEDURE [usp_EMAIL_Subscribe](@Email [varchar](50),@Opt_GenInterest [tinyint],@Opt_DatePeople [tinyint],@Opt_NewFriends [tinyint],@Opt_OldFriends [tinyint],@Opt_Business [tinyint],@Opt_Couples [tinyint],@OptOut [tinyint],@OptOutDate datetime,@Opt_Events [tinyint],@City [varchar](30), @State [varchar](20), @ZCode [varchar](10),@Country [varchar](20))ASBEGINdeclare @EmailID intset @EmailID = NULL-- Get the EmailID matching the provided email addressset @EmailID = (select EmailID from v_SENWEB_EMAIL_SUBSCRIBERS whereEmailAddress = @Email)-- If the address is new, insert the address and settings. I have a database that is about 300 gig. I am setting up replication to a reporting server. We are doing a series or mock loads and I will need drop the tables and reload the main database a few times before we go live. To do that I plan to stop replication and drop all the articles, drop the subscription, then load the new data, then reinitialize and restart replication.
The first time I tried to do this, when I drop the articles, it seems to be trying to "clean up" the distribution database on the reporting server and that is taking a couple of hours to do. The disruption database is about 40 gig.
Is this correct behavior in SQL2005 replication? Is there a way to avoid this? I have all the replication pieces scripted out and would like to just drop replication, reload, and then run my scripts to recreate replication. But this "clean up" is going to cause me a lot of headache if I don't figure out what is going on.
Am I going down the wrong road here? Is there an easier way to do this? Any comments would be great!!!!
Hello, When I try to display HIstory for one of my Maintenance Plan, it takes forever to bring me those results back (up to 15-20 minutes). What can be the problem? What should I check?
Hi there i have a sql server 7 database that i copied across to another server this time running windows 2003 and sql server 8. I have a routine that runs every night on each machine. on the old machine it take about 2 hours to do. on this new machine it is taking up to 5.5 hours to do the exact same job. the results are the same but the time delay could become an issue later on so i would like to nip it in the bud now.
Does anyone ahe any suggestions as to why the code would run so much slower on a newer and better spec machine.
I have copied everything across so there is no difference in tables or stored procedures. is there an optimisation tool i can run ??
I have a row that is being used log track plays on our website.
Here's the table:
CREATE TABLE [dbo].[Music_BandTrackPlays]( [ListenDate] [datetime] NOT NULL DEFAULT (getdate()), [TrackId] [int] NOT NULL, [IPAddress] [varchar](20) ) ON [PRIMARY]
There's a CLUSTERED INDEX on ListenDate ASC and a NON CLUSTERED INDEX on the TrackId.
I have a TRIGGER on the Music_BandTrackPlays table that looks like the following:
CREATE TRIGGER [trig_Increment_Music_BandTrackPlays_PlayCount] ON [dbo].[Music_BandTrackPlays] AFTER INSERT AS UPDATE Music_BandTracks SET Music_BandTracks.PlayCount = Music_BandTracks.PlayCount + TP.PlayCount FROM (SELECT TrackId, COUNT(*) AS PlayCount FROM inserted GROUP BY TrackId) AS TP WHERE Music_BandTracks.TrackId = TP.TrackId
When a simple INSERT statement is done on the Music_BandTrackPlays table, it can take quite a long time. When I remove the TRIGGER the INSERTs are immediate. The Execution plan for the TRIGGER shows that a 'Inserted Scan' is taking up most of the resources.
How exactly is the pseudo 'inserted' table formed?
For now, I think the easiest thing to do is update my logging page so it performs 2 queries. One to UPDATE the Music_BandTracks table and increment the counter, and perform the INSERT into the Music_BandTrackPlays table seperately.
I'm ok with that solution but I would really like to understand why the TRIGGER is taking so long. The 'inserted' pseudo table will be 1 row 99% of the time. Does SQL Server perform a table scan on all 20 million rows in order to determine what's new and put it in the inserted pseudo table?
I am trying to create a clustered index on a View of a table that has an xml datatype. This indexing ran for two days and still did not complete. I tried to leave it running while continuing to use the database, but the SELECT statements where executing too slowly and the DML statements where Timing out. I there a way to control the server/cpu resources used by an indexing process. How can I determine the completion percentage or the indexing process. How can I make indexing the view with the xml data type take less time?
On SQL 2012 (64bit) I have a CLR stored procedure that calls another, T-SQL stored procedure.
The CLR procedure passes a sizeable amount of data via a user defined table type resp.table values parameter. It passes about 12,000 rows with 3 columns each.
For some reason the call of the procedure is verz very slow. I mean just the call, not the procedure.
I changed the procdure to do nothing (return 1 in first line).
So with all parameters set from
command.ExecuteNonQuery()to create proc usp_Proc1 @myTable myTable read only begin return 1 end
it takes 8 seconds.I measured all other steps (creating the data table in CLR, creating the SQL Param, adding it to the command, executing the stored procedure) and all of them work fine and very fast.
When I trace the procedure call in SQL Profiler I get a line like this for each line of the data table (12,000)
SP:StmtCompleted -- Encrypted Text.
As I said, not the procedure or the creation of the data table takes so long, really only the passing of the data table to the procedure.
I have created CLR Stored Procedure and my CLR stored procedures are not appearing in the Stored Procedures drop-down list located on the Data tab within the VS2005 Business Intelligence Development Studio. After Creating the dll I have registered the dll like that CREATE ASSEMBLY MY_SP_NAME from 'C:MY_DLL_PATHMY_DLL_NAME.dll' WITH PERMISSION_SET = SAFEAfter registering I have deployed the dll :CREATE PROCEDURE [dbo].[MY_SP_NAME] @dbname [nvarchar](4000), @varTable [nvarchar](4000), .............. .............. .............. Is there something I need to do to add these CLR stored procedures? Please please ASAP.
Hi all,I am using Stored procedure to design report instead of Query. Problem is i am unable to view the fields in the dataset. Any body please tell me the Steps to use Stored procedure in Reporting Services design. Regards.
I have a big SQL Stored Procedure which works with a cursor inside of it. During the procedure the data is inserted into a table and at the end is a SELECT statement from that table. The problem is that when i create a dataset with that stored procedure and i run it in the Data tab i get the correct select, but in the Fields section of the Report I don't get the fields from the last SELECT, but the fields from the cursor. Am I doing something wrong or is this a bug and how can i fix it. Thanks!
Hello, I'm having some problems and I wonder if anyone can help me. I need to call a stored procedure to retrieve some data from the bank and use it in a report. I'm using oracle DB, but I'm not using ODBC, I'm using Oracle. I can call the SP using 2 commands: 1- in the dataset data form, I can select the command type as Stored Procedure and write the name of my procedure without the arguments, and then the VS ask for the arguments 2- in the same form, the command type as TEXT, i can use the syntax: call <SP name>(arguments)
My problems are: -in the first way, how can I programatically set the arguments to send? -in both of them, how can I define that the data that should be stored in the dataset is in the out cursor parameter?
I have stored procedures that will run fine from query analyzer windows, from other programs, etc. When I try to run the sp from vs 2005 form with in a SSRS project, the sp just hangs. It will not return any records and the app says "Not Responding. This does not happen for all SP's only some of them. Any ideas?
I am working with one example on SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services. I have a stored procedure with two parameters. I want to call this stored procedure from SQL Server Reporting Services 2005.
CREATE PROCEDURE spEmp ( @id int, @name varchar(150) ) AS BEGIN SELECT EmpId, EmpName, EmpSal FROM Emp WHERE EmpId = @id AND EmpName = @name END
I want to pass
@id AND @name
parameters from reporting services form. Can you please give me link / article / steps to follow this in SQL SERVER REPORTING SERVICES 2005 ?
I have a report. I need to make a drop-down parameter optional. I've setup the parameter to use a dataset as its source, and I need to allow the value to be null. I've selected allow nulls check box, and I've even tried setting the default value to System.DBNull.Value. But, when the entry is not selected (blank), no data ever comes back. If the data is blank or null, my procedure works (I've tested it). How do I send a null value to the database through reporting services report? I was hoping to avoid creating a special query just for that purpose.
I am trying to call oracle stored procedure from SRSS 2005. I am using the syntax { Call s_test_rcur()} . I am getting following error. An error occurred while retrieving the parameters in the query.ORA-00911: invalid characterORA-06512: at "SYS.DBMS_UTILITY", line 68ORA-06512: at line 1

I have a stored procedure (sproc) running in Firebird Database. Now I try to use this sproc to build a report in the SSRS 2012 (SSDT) Report Designer.
After I connect to the dataset, and when I choose the Query Type as 'Stored Procedure', and type the name of my sproc, and then go to the Query Designer, and click ! (F5) , I get the following error:
TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server Report Designer ------------------------------
An error occurred while executing the query. ERROR [HY000] [ODBC Firebird Driver][Firebird]Dynamic SQL Error SQL error code = -104 Token unknown - line 1, column 1 [sproc name]
how to resolve this? If its a T-SQL sproc, then it will be no issue; in this case, Firebird database connects to the SSRS via a 32-bit System ODBC connection.
When I proceed and click ok for everything, I get this error (after I exit the Query Designer), in the Dataset Properties tab:
"Could not update a list of fields for the query. Verify that you can connect to the data source and that your query syntax is correct."
The ODBC connection between SSRS and Firebird works fine. In fact I am able to run many queries as ad-hoc ones, but when I use the queries as sprocs, then this issue pops up.
I have created a query in which I have used first_value, lead, lag windows functions. I tried using the query in SSRS query text, but for some reason it could not load. Then I created a stored procedure and implemented that query in stored proc.
The problem is that I am able to execute the stoured proc from sql server studio, but SSRS is not able to load data.
Hi there... I wrote a SP to check for different types of exceptions in a few database tables. When I was writing the scripts, everything seemed to execute fairly quickly and I was satisfied with the performance. When I completed the scripts and compiled them into a stored procedure and ran it (using Exec), it took a lot longer to run than I thought it would. So I went through each section of the script and ran each portion individually to see which part was taking so long.... but all the scripts ran very quickly. The individual scripts, run separately, took a combined total of 0:26 to run.... but the SP was taking 1:30 to run. (????) So then I took ALL the script contained in the SP and ran it by itself in the Query Analyzer.... it took 0:27 to run. (??????)
So basically... the script that I wrote takes 27 seconds to execute, when run by itself in the Query Analyzer... but when I take that very same script and turn it into a Store Procedure and run it, it takes a minute and a half.
Any ideas why?? I thought SP's were supposed to run faster because they're pre-compiled.
I have a sp that was taking very little time (about 34 sec). But suddenly is stacked. It is running and running and running but not LOCKED neither SUSPENDED. It is always RUNNABLE. I have made Index and statistics optimization but nothing. I looked into execution plan but everything seems ok. All the time is in 3 indexes that are Index Seek and not Table Scan!!! So why is stacked... I do not know how much time it takes because I have to stop it. (SQL SERVER 2008 R2, the database was migrated from SQL SERVER 2000)
Created a report that displays the Maximum Response time (example of value 00:00:00) which is directly pulled from the Stored proc. When I ran the report, the column displays blank values.I am not sure if I should add any conversion to the Response value in the report.
I was wondering if it was possible to call reporting server web service directly from my sql server stored procedure. The call that I need to make to reporting web service needs to generate the report in a PDF format.
I am using SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1, and BIDS 2008 SP1. The problem I am about to define does NOT happen when the report is deployed to the report server, but only within the report development environment (BIDS).
From within BIDS my reports are fed by stored procedures. The problem is when I modify a stored procedure in Management Studio, and refresh the report from within BIDS, the report does not reflect the new changes made in the stored procedure. So far I have found one clumsy solution to this problem:
1) Go to the folder where the project is saved on the file system.
2)Find the ".data" file that is associated to the particular report, then delete it. For instance, if my report name is TestReport.rdl, find the file named TestReport.rdl.data, then delete it.
I need to call a SQL Server stored procedure, which takes over five hours to run, from an asp.NET web page. This procedure then calls a DTS package which is what takes 5+ hours to run. I need the user to be able to click on the 'run' button and have the page kick off the stored procedure (or the DTS Package if that will work instead) and display a message saying the load has begun and to check a 'status' link.
Right now I get a page timeout because it's waiting for results.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, cat72
