Wierd, Yet Cool.. Can Login/browse To Server Remotely, But Not Locally.

Jun 11, 2007

I can access the report server remotely. However, when I try to access via browser locally, no luck. I get access denied.

Some kind of browser diff maybe?

I noticed that on the browsers/machines that work, I have the option of putting the domain in seperately. The browser that doesnt work (on the same machine as the db server and web site) puts the domain in front of the username for me.

Any ideas?

Unable To Connect To SQL Server Express Locally Or Remotely

Jun 22, 2007

I have read all of the posts regarding this subject as well as 3"Dummies" guides and I keep having the same problems. I have a verysimple multi-user application that has to hit a database. Wecuerrently have this system deployed and it is working fine on adomain based network. We are scaling back and the network we will beusing is now a workgroup not a domain.It should be simple. I have XP boxes (clients) trying to hit the SQLServer Express database on a Windows Server 2003 machine. It is aclosed network so security is not an issue. I am trying to make thisthing wide open. All I want is for the user to be logged in on hisclient machine, run the application, and access/update the databasewithout having to re-authenticate to the SQL server. I want windowsto handle all of the authentication between the XP machines and theServer 2003 machine.Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Connecting To Datafiles Stored Remotely From SQL Server--not Locally From The SQL Server

Jun 18, 2001

I had asked a question last week and I realized that I had phrased it in a misleading way. Within a lab environment at my company, we are experimenting w/ accessing remote SQL data files stored separately on another machine from the SQL server itself (whether it be another client or server).

The experiment is this: You have one client machine accessing a SQL server via Enterprise Manager. The datafiles that you are trying to access are stored on another machine that does not have SQL Server installed. This remote machine only has the datafiles.

Can one map a static path via UNC from the SQL server to the datafiles on the remote machine and then access these datafiles (as long as the user's account has the appropriate permissions to the remote machine)? To my understanding, within SQL server you can only access datafiles that are stored locally on the SQL server itself.

The other thing that I was wondering was if the type of user account had some significance in this situation. More than likely, a local user account would not be able to access the remote machine w/ the datafiles even if the SQL server could map an UNC path and retain it. A domainuser account might be able to do this though.

Any help that you could provide would be appreciated.

Access Denied To ReportServer And Reports, Works Locally But Fails Remotely

May 15, 2008

I am getting the error:

HTTP Error 401.1 - Unauthorized: Access is denied due to invalid credentials.
Internet Information Services (IIS)

when I attempt to connect to Reports or ReportServer from my desktop, but it works normally when I login with the same userid and run it directly on the server, using IE. It is prompting me for a login 2 or 3 times before failing.

My configuration is:

Report Server system:

Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2 - 32bit

SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services Enterprise Edition
Windows & Web Service run as a domain account
Database connection is using domain account - not in db_owner, but in RSExec roles
Database is on another server, and is Native, not SharePoint integrated
Reports & ReportServer are in a separate application pool
Reporting Services had SP2 installed before it was configured
The Rport Server is a VM

Database server

Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2 - x64
SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition 64bit
Version 9.00.3200.00

The Report Manager was not working at all, and I discovered that there was no entry in the .Net Framework version on the APS.Net tab in properties for the Reports virtual directory. I am not seeing any errors or anything unusual in the Event log or in the ReportServer log files.

FrontPage 2002 extensions were installed, and then removed. I noticed that this installed a SharePoint virtual directory, and that disappeared when I removed FrontPage extensions.

The domain group my userid is in is in the local Administrators group on the ReportServer system, and I have added this group as a System Administrator and Content Manager through the report Manager.

I would greatly appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks,
Bill

Value Is Null Remotely - Non Null Locally

Aug 15, 2006

ok here is a WIERD issue.

I've NEVER EVER had this issue, I have always done this and it works great both locally and remotely.

I have a table, which is a "customers" table.

I have a stored procedure which takes in parameters (name, address, password etc...) and returns me back, via a parameter declared as output - the customer ID.

I've always done this, and works great.

Now, this works fine locally.

IF I try to run this/do the exact same execution of commands (create a customer) remotely (where the database is stored, so copying everything from local to "over there") it does not work.

I get a DBNULL value back from the parameter, declared as an int output.

IF I copy and paste this Stored procedure Query/command into Query Analyzer and execute it (on the remote connection) and run it, giving it the exact same values as I do, it works perfect and returns me the correct value.

I've even dropped and recreated the stored procedure but makes no difference.

Any ideas why?

here is the proc....

CREATE PROCEDURE [dbo].[DoCreateNewCustomer] (
@theFirstName nvarchar(25),
@theLastName nvarchar(25),
@theAddress nvarchar(50),
@theCity nvarchar(15),
@thePostCode nvarchar(9),
@thePhoneNumber nvarchar(21),
@theMobilePhoneNumber nvarchar(21),
@theIPAddress nvarchar(25),
@thePassword nvarchar(50),
@theEmailAddress nvarchar(30),
@result int output
)
AS
SET @result = (SELECT [ID] FROM Customers WHERE emailAddress = @theEmailAddress)
IF @result IS NOT NULL
 SET @result = -1
ELSE
BEGIN
 SET @result = @@IDENTITY
 INSERT INTO Customers (

 Firstname,
 Lastname,
 Address,
 City,
 Postcode,
 PhoneNumber,
 MobileNumber,
 IPAddress,
 [Password],
 EmailAddress

 )

 VALUES (

 @theFirstName,
 @theLastName,
 @theAddress,
 @theCity,
 @thePostCode,
 @thePhoneNumber,
 @theMobilePhoneNumber,
 @theIPAddress,
 @thePassword,
 @theEmailAddress
 )

END
GO

Any ideas why it does not work when calling the stored proc from either a web app, or through QA remotely but works fine when I run that command in QA or locally?

Again, if I do:

EXEC DoCreateNewCustomer { params } - the output result it gives me is DBNULL (if on remote connection)

If I do this locally, perfect

If I copy and paste pretty much the SP into QA and execute it on the remote connection, works great, and also locally.

Can't Login Remotely Even Though Membership Data Is Present

Dec 18, 2006

(Sorry this was posted to VWD2005 Express by mistake)
I have created a simple project using ASP.NET 2.0 which enables a user to login. I created the login user using the Web Administration Tool in Visual Studio 2005.
I created everything locally and it worked.
Locally I have 2 databases. One containing normal data (which my site uses to populate a GridView control) and the other being ASPNETDB.MDF - which contains membership (login user) data. These 2 databases sit in the App_Data folder which is in the root of the project.
I have a remote database which is hosted in a shared environment.
This is just the one database and it appears to have all tables in the one database (membership tables and normal tables - such as the one I use to populate my GridView control).
I uploaded the website and using the Database Publishing Wizard I uploaded the database data to the shared host. I also changed the connection string to point to my remote database.
If I visit the website the GridView is populating correctly (pulling data from the remote database) but when I try to login it crashes. The error is "Access denied creating App_Data sub directory".
The membership login details for the user I created are in the remote database as I have compared the data in it to the data in my ASPNETDB.MDF local database.
If I launch from within Visual Studio 2005 then it allows me to login perfectly well.
Please does anybody know why it won't let me login when I access it via the website?
Many thanks for any help,
Graham

Cannot Remotely Login To SQL Express Since Last Windows Update

Nov 17, 2006

Since today (after installing the latest Windows Updates !on my local machine!) I cannot login to a SQLExpress instance remotely; stating that it cannot find the server/instance.

The weird thing is: it only happens when I want to login to the non-default instance (sqlexpress 2005) (<IP><instance>).

When i'm using the default instance (msde 2000 or sqlexpress 2005 on another machine) (<IP>) it seems to work fine.

Does this have something to do with the windows updates, or is it just a coincedence?

Thanks in advance,

Wierd Behavior Of SQL Server While Executing A SP

Dec 2, 2007

Hi Friends,

I am struggling with creating a simple stored procedure, I want to take max(timekey) out in one variable @Val in a dynamic SQL statement as below in SP. When I create this SP, it creates successfully but when I run it I get error

Select @Val=MAX(TimeKey) FROM ABC

Must declare the scalar variable "@Val".

Can someone help me in understanding this wierd behavior? And how to get rid of this. Table and SP scripts are as below

CREATE TABLE ABC (TimeKey int, Data_Val int)

CREATE Procedure MAXVal(@Table_Name Varchar(30))

AS

BEGIN

DECLARE @Val INT,

@SQL Varchar(100)

Browse Tables In A Linked Server

Reference:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306397

In enterprise manager, I can browse the objects by clicking on "Tables" under the selected linked server, and that allows me to browse my objects in that server and eventually design my query graphically.

In SQL Server 2005 Express, I know that I cannot browse the objects after referring to microsoft article above.
"Note In SQL Server Management Studio, you cannot expand the new linked server name to view the list of objects that the server contains. "

However, is it possible to design my query graphically?

Cannot Connect Locally To SQL Server Express

Aug 23, 2006

Hi,

I'm trying to connect to a SQL Server 2005 express on my local Windows
XP Professional machine. I've searched the the MS fora and Google
but all the answers I find relate to trying to connect to a remote DB,
not local.

I run the aspnet_regsql.exe program in the interactive wizard mode, and
in the Select the Server and Database step when I click on the Database
drop-down list an error box pops up:

Connection failed

Failed to query a list of database names from the SQL server.

An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the
server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be
caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not
allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 -
Could not open a connection to SQL Server)

Exactly the same error message appears when I:

* Change the 'Server' name from my computer's name to localhost, 127.0.0.1, or SQLEXPRESS. in the aspnet_regsql wizard.

* Stop my firewall (ZoneAlarm, native Windows firewall is disabled, and I switched off my cable modem at the time).

* Use the SQL Server surface area utility to enable remote connections
with both named pipes and TCP/IP), and also to enable CLR integration
in the Features section.

* Stop the SQL Server service. I did this to see if a different
error occurred, but it's as if aspnet_regsql.exe can't even see the SQL
Server.

* Have an additional instance of SQL Server running under my own username (see below).

I have an ASP.NET project (created by someone else on another computer) which attempts
to open a SQL Server database. It runs fine until the call to
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection::Open() which raises an exception
with exactly the same error string as above (including what's in
parentheses). The connection string is "Data
Source=localhost;Initial Catalog=blah;Integrated Security=SSPI;" where
blah is specific to the company I'm doing this for.

I've created a test ASP.NET project to which I added a SQL
Database. My only option was to create a .mdf file in the
APP_DATA folder. The connection string is "Data
Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|Database.mdf;Integrated
Security=True;User Instance=True" and it works fine and displays the
data I've put into the database, but in the Task Manager another
instance of sqlservr.exe appears (running under my username; the
existing sqlservr.exe runs under the NETWORK SERVICE username).
Should this happen??

If I stop the SQL Server service (or both of them), an error message in my web browser
appears (no exception is raised because there's no code in the project,
just a data-bound control). The error is the same as above,
except the parenthetical part is "(provider: SQL Network Interfaces,
error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)".

Edit: oh yeah, I've also tried to set up an ODBC data source connected
to SQL Server throught the Control Panel/Admin, but the ODBC applet
can't seem to see SQL Server either.  I only get three options for
data sources: dBASE files (.dbf), Excel files (.xls), and MS Access
Database (.mdb).  If I click on 'Add' and select "SQL Server" and
go on from there, it comes back and says the server doesn't exist or
refuses access.  If I stop the service, the ODBC applet says the
sql server wasn't found.

Can anyone help please?

I'm stumped..

Cannot Connect To Locally SQL Server In C#.net 2005 Express

I am trying to do the Chapter 1 project of Getting Started with ADO.net 2.0 Step by Step (microsoft press)...

I enter the data source configuration wizard and select database, and press next.

I then press the new connection button, and the Choose data source screen appears.

In the List are only 2 options:

Microsoft Access Database File

Microsoft SQL Server Database File.

The option they want me to choose does not appear in the list.

Microsoft SQL Server sqlclient

I tried following the instructions in this thread [http://forums.microsoft.com/msdn/showpost.aspx?postid=85686&siteid=1] where a user had a similar problem, but had no success.

I have reinstalled C#, reinstalled SQL Server Express 2005 with Advanced Tools, but neither helped.

VB6/SQL Server Application Runs Locally, But Not From Server

Jul 23, 2005

I have a VB6 SP6 MDAC 2.8 application talking to SQL Server 2000. Once I'veinstalled this application on my local machine I have been able to move the..exe file to a file server and it runs just fine from there for all my localusers. This is very handy for updating the application without having toreinstall it on each user's machine each time. They just use a shortcutpointing to the file server .exe fileMy problem has become that we have some users at remote locations that VPNinto our network who also want to use this application. When it's installedlocally on their machines, or even on file servers at their locations,everything works fine. However, when they run the .exe off of my fileserver the SQL Server connections times out on the initial connection openafter the default 30 seconds every time. Run from their own desktops orfile servers it connects within 2 seconds every time. This is on bothWindows 2000 and XP Pro machines. Even when I tell the shortcut to usetheir local drive for the working directory the same problem happens.This goes against everything I've seen with server-based files for 15 years.Once a file is loaded in the computer for execution, why does it matterwhere it came from? What "baggage" can an .exe file carry with it that willcause it to not execute when hosted on one server, but run just fine fromthe desktop or another, closer server? The only known difference is thatthe connection speed is much better when I run it locally here to that fileserver.Help.

Aspclassic On IIS7 SQL 2005. ODBC SQL Server Driver[SQL Server]Cannot Open Database Requested By The Login. The Login Failed

Apr 16, 2008

Hi all,

Have just tried my sql server 2005 connected asp classic website on II7 for the first time and have gotten some errors.
First off I have unchecked show friendly errors in IE and have enabled ASP to send error messages to the browser.

My error I get is when I execute a basic .asp page:

Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers error '80004005'
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Cannot open database "mydatabasename" requested by the login. The login failed.
/index.asp, line 10 which is dbConnect.Open cstring

from this peice of code:

sub dbOpen()
set dbConnect = Server.CreateObject("ADODB.Connection")
cstring = "DSN=mysqldsn; Trusted Connection=yes"
dbConnect.Open cstring
end sub

I have gone into ODBC and have setup both a user dsn and file dsn that equals mysqldsn and points to my database (I know you only need to set up one DSN but I'm not sure which)

I also notice under mywebsite home panel there is a connection string option. Do I do anything with that?

Definatley a lot more to it than XP's II6!

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Managing SQL Server Remotely

Jun 26, 2007

I've combed through SQL Help to find the answer to my question but I think it's telling me it can't be done. I work both from an office with my servers and from home. When I'm at home I would like to access my SQL server remotely using a tool such as MS SQL Server Management Studio. But it appears there is no way to access my SQL Server for management purposes using Management Studio over a remote internet connection. I can access the server using Management Studio while I'm on the internal office network but not from home.
Has anyone been able to do this or might recommend a third party tool as robust as Management Studio?

Remotely Administering The SQL Server

Oct 24, 2005

Hi

I have heard a lot of people saying that they administe the SQL Server remotely , I mean sitting in one city , they work on the SQL Server in another city.

How is this actually achieved . Is it that the SQL Box is given a real Ip & then they connect it though the internet, but then this would not be safe , as the SQL box would be on the real Ip.

Could some one please let me knw the ways (solutions) to access & adminster a SQL Server remotely. (Not on ones LAN ) ...

Thanks & Regards
Kid

Is this at all possible without SQL Server 2000 installed ? i have tried to download the personal edition / developer but I couldnt find it

If anyone knows where i can find the developer edition or if there is a trick to get SQL server 2005 to work with my SQL 2000 server it would be greatly appreciated.

Cannot Access Remotely A Server

Mar 29, 2007

Hello, I am new to SQL Server Express, I am trying to upscale my database/Application to a SQL Server/Application with C#. All I want is to create a SQL Server service on my Office Server and manage it via my station. But I keep getting this error:

TITLE: Connect to Server
Cannot connect to SERVER.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond.) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 10060)

The thing is that I went on the Server in the Surface Area Manager, I allowed IP and and Name pipes on network. Still does not work.

When I open the Manager from my station, I see the Server but keep getting this error.

Can someone please help me. Thank you
