Wild Search NText And NVarChar In Parameterized Inline Statement

I want to retrieve data from SQL containing non English character but fail, can anyone shed me some light?
What I use currently:
Dim strSQL As String
strSQL = "SELECT ArticleID, "
strSQL &= "ISNULL(Body, '') AS Body, "
strSQL &= "ISNULL(Subject, '') AS Subject "
strSQL &= "FROM Articles "
strSQL &= "WHERE (Subject LIKE N'%' + @Keyword + '%' OR [Body] LIKE N'%' + @Keyword + '%') "
Dim con As New SqlConnection(ConfigurationSettings.AppSettings("ConnectionString"))
Dim cmd As New SqlDataAdapter(strSQL, con)
cmd.SelectCommand.Parameters.Add("@Keyword", SqlDbType.NVarChar).Value = keyword
...
I'm not so sure where should I place the letter "N", I use :
SELECT ArticleID,
ISNULL(Body, '') AS Body,
ISNULL(Subject, '') AS Subject,
FROM Articles
WHERE (Subject LIKE N'%SomeNonEnglishString%' OR [Body] LIKE N'%SomeNonEnglishString%')
in Query Analzyer, it works! But it failed in my program... oh my god...
Thanks a lot!

I am running this query to an sql server 2000 database from my aspcode:"select * from MyTable whereMySqlServerRemoveStressFunction(MyNtextColumn) = '" &MyAdoRemoveStressFunction(MyString) & "'"The problem is that the replace function doesn't work with the ntextdatatype (so as to replace the stresses with an empty string). I hadto implement the MySqlServerRemoveStressFunction, i.e. a function thattakes a column name as a parameter and returns the text contained inthis column having replaced some letters of the text (the letters withstress). Unfortunately, I could not do that because user-definedfunctions cannot return a value of ntext.So I have the following idea:"select * from MyTable whereCheckIfTheyAreEqualIngoringTheStesses(MyNtextColum n, '" & MyString &"')"How can I implement the CheckIfTheyAreEqualIngoringTheStessesfunction? (I don't know how to combine these functions to do what Iwant: TEXTPTR, UPDATETEXT, WRITETEXT, READTEXT)

Is there syntax that lets you look for all names that include ell in them? That is, in Oracle it would be:
select id from customers where firstname like(%ell%)
Or, is there regular expression support in the select's where clause?
thanks

Hi!
I am developing one web site, in that I can upload files to sql server, it will save the uploaded file in binary type and we can download the files from there. Upto this everything is working perfectly. But now my problem is - i have to implement the wildcard character search in this site. The file name and extension will save on the database in different columns, and one more thing is file name is unique. I confused to implement wildcard search in this site, where i can implement this type of search in database or in my application with c#? So please help me to do this. I dont know that this is the right place to post this question or not. If it is not right place, please guide me to where I can post this. If it is right place, please help me to implement wild card search.
Thanks in advance!

Hi All,
I'm trying to use a very simple SQL String that check if a specific string exist in the DB.
When I do the SQL and use a regular Connection I get the result.
When I use a data set and on the table adapter I need to use the "LIKE %" method I get an error.
What should I write on the table adapter in order to make this search?
ItemID is a type string.
This is my SQL:
SELECT itemID, itemName
FROM Items
WHERE (itemID LIKE @ItemIDTemp)
This sample give no result
or
SELECT itemID, itemName
FROM Items
WHERE (itemID LIKE '%' + @ItemIDTemp + '%')
This sample return an error message
"Data conversion failed. [OLEDB status value (if known)=2]"
What is the right way to do so?

I just move our SQL server to version 2005. In new version ntext field is deprecated and documentation says that ntext(max) should be used.
If I have table Table1 and ntext column Column1. When I execute following SQL statements:
alter table Table1 alter column
Column1 nvarchar(max)
go
1.) Are out of row data automatically move to in row?
2.) Or should I also execute something like this ?
update Table1 set Column1 = Column1+'' where Column1 is not null
3.) Is there way to check if data is stored out or in row?
Best regards

Hi,
my question concerns both desktop and device apps.
I'm using sql compact to store some data. I often have to store strings (descriptions, url, etc.) but I don't know when to use nvarchar or ntext.
Nvarchar needs to have a size limit, but I often set it to 8092 when I don't know the actual limit (urls can be very long !).
I fear Ntext because I suppose there is performances impact.
Is there any "rules" to help to choose which data type I'd use ?
Thanks,
Steve

I need to sort by an ntext field, but it won't let me do it.
However, if I cast the field as nvarchar(100), I can use ORDER BY on that.
Is there any reason that this is a bad idea? In my testing, ordering by a converted ntext field was actually *faster* than ordering by an nvarchar (same data in the fields).

Hi all
I have a table that contains an ntext column for storing values up to a couple of Mb in size.
However, I estimate that 95% of the values stored in this ntext field will fit into an nvarchar(4000) field.
Is it worth me having both fields in the table?
i.e. For rows where the values < 4000 characters I would store the value in the nvarchar column. Otherwise I would use the ntext column.
Can anyone confirm whether this technique would increase performance given that ntext values are sort of stored separately to the rest of the table data?
A colleague of mine is an Oracle DBA and he mentioned this technique is fairly caommonly adopted in the Oracle world.
Thanks
Matt

I tried turning text in row OFF, but it did not work. Can anyone forsee any problems with changing the ntext fields to nvarchar(max) in the live database? Also, I came across sp_tableoption N'MyTable', 'large value types out of row', 'ON', does this work for ntext also? sp_tableoption N'MyTable', 'text in row', 'OFF' did not do anything.Any help would be appreciated.

Hi all,I need to store data into about 104 columns. This is problematic with MSSQL, since it doesn't support rows over 8kb in total size.Most of the columns are of type NVARCHAR(255), which means we can't havemore than 8092/(255*2) = 15 columns of this type.With a row length of more than 8kb, SQL gives a warning that any rows overthat amount will be truncated.So far I'm seeing two possible solutions to this problem:1. Split data into multiple tables with the same ID column accross alltables, and then join them on SELECT statements.2. Use NTEXT instead of NVARCHAR. NTEXT's length is 16 bytes because itcontains a pointer to the actual value stored somewhere else. However, NTEXTdoesn't support regular indexing, only through a Full-Text Index catalog. Inthis case I'll need to user "WHERE CONTAINS(columnName, 'sometext')" toperform searches, which is bearable.I'm inclined toward #2. However I haven't used Full-Text indices before anddon't know their limitations. Will I run into problems with NTEXT? Is therea better solution?Thanks.-Oleg.

I hope this is the right forum for this question, my apologies in advance if it isn't....
We have a web based CGI product (written in C++ VS 6) that uses ODBC and takes text from a submitted web page and stores it in a SQL Server table in a field of type "ntext". The user in question is copying and pasting this text from an MS Word 2003 document. After the initial save our app errors out trying to access the table it just wrote to, and when we look in the table we see that up to **200 carriage returns** have been mysteriously inserted into the ntext field!! (Our product has been out in the field with no such problem for several years, so we are thinking it's related to something specific the customer is doing - perhaps with using MS Word for the source text.) We have tried but cannot duplicate the problem, but the customer sees it with each attempt to modify the table in question. The only thing that I see out of the ordinary is that the field in question is of type "ntext" - which supports unicode, instead of nvarchar. Does any of this ring a bell for anybody? I'm thinking of changing the field type to nvarchar to see if that solves the problem.
Thanks, Steve Bradbery

Although writing a parameterized SQL statement has been simplified using the asp:parameter options, it still may benefit to use the old fashioned method of writing a sql statement using an input string. I have noticed this for wanting to make a parameter to select which table I want to pull from. It will have a string that can include some words in different languages, so that I can find by using:
SELECT Key_Words FROM MyTable WHERE Key_Words LIKE '%" & MyVar & "%' "...
The problem is that I can not apply clustered index on ntext field (or *any* index...)

HI All,Can't quite get my head aorund this problem. My knowledge or moreimportantly my experience of using T-SQL is small and as a consequencemy stored procedures are basic.My current project involves simple stored_procs searching/retrievingLegacy data. Key problem is that in the case of the 'Job' table, the'Job Number' is an alphanumeric value. Here is the current storedprocedure:ALTER PROCEDURE Rpt_HARLegacyJobSp(@JobNo NVARCHAR(10))ASSELECT IPJOBM_SID, --Start IPJOBMJOB_NUMBER_JBMSTR,CONTRACT_JOB_JBMSTR,RECORD_TYPE_JBMSTR,....TAX_EXEMPT_1_JBMSTR,TAX_EXEMPT_2_JBMSTR, --Finish IPJOBMPPJOBD_SID, --Start PPJOBDRELEASE_JOBDET,....CATALOGUE_NUMBER_JOBDET,ITEM_NUMBER_JOBDET,SHIPPED_COMPLETE_JOBDET,ISSUED_COMPLETE_JOBDET,QUANTITY_RETURNED_JOBDET --Finish HARLegacy_PPJOBDFROM HARLegacy_IPJOBMJOIN HARLegacy_PPJOBDON HARLegacy_PPJOBD.RELEASE_JOBDET = HARLegacy_IPJOBM.JOB_NUMBER_JBMSTRWHERE HARLegacy_IPJOBM.JOB_NUMBER_JBMSTR LIKE '%' + @JobNo + '%'Job Number values in the table can either begin with a Letter e.g.'H3887' or a Number '13016'The problem here is that when a JobNumber value e.g. '001887' witha/more than one proceeding zero(s) is passed to the stored procedure novalue is returned. I am assuming this to mean that the currentWHERE....LIKE statement interprets this example value as '0'? As thereare no '0' values then no value is returned?I have read about the SUBSTRING function in Books Online which I kindof understand but do not exactly know if this functions is suitable forthis problem?What I want the stored procedure to do when executing is1) Read in the value of @JobNo and identify n number of leading zeros(according to the Legacy data this can be 1 or more) . If the JobNumberbegins with an alphabetic e.g. H3887 then it will just search andreturn all 'H' values.2) Perform search on/from first whole number e.g. '1887'This means that as I am using the LIKE command it would be acceptablefor this search to produce variations on '001887' e.g. 0014887 etc.Please can anyone provide me with some guidance on how I can achievethis, which at first glance, seems a baffling feature?!?Any advice would be greatly appreciated,Many Thanksrohan

Hello,
I have been reading about how you shouldn't build dynamic SQL statements (see TextBox1.Text in line 3) and should use parameters instead, but I haven't yet found how to create a SELECT statement with a parameter that fills a dataset. If anyone can show me the correct way of doing this I would appreciate it so I can add it to my code snippets for proper coding practices. Thanks in advance for any assistance.
string strConnectionString = ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["sqlConnectionString"].ConnectionString;

I have following requirement. From OLE-DB source I am getting IDS. Then lookup with some master data. Now I have only matching IDs. Now I need find some filed(say Frequency from some table for each above id). I already write stored procedure for same where I am passing ID as parameter.Which is working fine when I run it SQL server management studio.
Query is sort of
Select field1,fiel2... from table 1 where id = @id
@id is each ID from lookup
Now I want to call this stored procedure in Data flow. I tried it using OLE DB command but it did not return output of stored procudre. I am getting output same what ever I am passing input.
Is there way to do this? In short my requirement is execute parametrized select statement using data flow trasformation component.

CREATE TABLE #TEST (Keyfield varchar(30) NULL)
INSERT INTO #Test (keyfield) VALUES ('M-S Logistics');
INSERT INTO #Test (keyfield) VALUES ('Monster Racing');
INSERT INTO #Test (keyfield) VALUES ('Mueller Farms');
DECLARE @Search AS nvarchar(30), @Search2 AS varchar(30)
--Query 1
SET @Search = 'Monster Racing'
SELECT TOP(1) keyfield FROM #Test WHERE keyfield >= @Search;
--Query 2
SET @Search2 = 'Monster Racing'
SELECT TOP(1) keyfield FROM #Test WHERE keyfield >= @Search2;
-- Why does query 2 return different result than query 1
