Will SQL Express Be Shipped In Vista If So What Versions And Other Questions.

Nov 11, 2006

1. The title of this post says it all. My app will have a very small footprint to down load. I don't want to user to have to download 50 + MB just to try my little $15 app:-) So

QUESTION 1 - Will SQL Express be in the Vista bits? If so which versions?

2. Once SQLExpress is installed by whatever means, are there rules about how the instance is used? I have no problems playing well with others so I would be more than happy to create my DB in .SQLExpress.

QUESTION 2 - Are there any rules governing who can play in the Express instance? How should dtabases should be named to avoid collisions with the other kids?

3. I'd love to be able to work in in ClickOnce / user never has to have admin password environment.

QUESTION 3 - Besides UAC are there any constraints on writing to a properly installed Express instance that would get in the way of a pure user application from using the basic instance.

4. Right now - because I can't read directions and still don't understand the smoke and mirrors in VS 2005 when it comes to dealing with databases - I have DDL in my program that allows me to create my database from scratch. Not sure that this is the right way to go.

QUESTION 4. What is the best way for an user software to create its database in an instance of SQL Express.

5. SQL Express is yet another thingie that will run in the background that the typical user won't understand and wont' give a hoot about.

QUESTION 5. Can I / should I programmatically worry about whether the service is up and running? If so how do I launch it.

I know this is a lot for a single post, but it all sort of hangs together.

Regard,

Al Christoph

Getting Started Questions, Versions, Upgrading, Etc.

Feb 2, 2007

I just attempted to upgrade to SQL Server Compact Edition (2005? 3.1?). The install appeared to go ok but I have no idea really and judging from the version numbers that appear in the references of my projects, I'd say there could be a problem. First, here is what I installed (and the order I installed it):

1) SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition (SQLServerCE31-EN.msi)
2) SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition Developer SDK (SSCE31SDK-ENU.msi)
3) SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition Tools for Visual Studio 2005 SP1 (SSCE31VSTools-ENU.exe)

The first two installs went normal and said they completed successfully. The VS Tools install was strange... it appeared to install but there was no message saying it was complete or successful. The install dialog just disappeared when it was done.

I had some projects that already had references to SQL Server Mobile 2005, so I loaded up a few of those projects, went to the references and removed the SqlServerCe reference and re-added it. I figured the version number would change but it didn't. The version number in the references dialog is 3.0.3600.0. However, the file that it's pointing to is 3.0.5300.0 (browsed to it in Explorer and looked at the properties). Does anyone know what the real version of SSCE is now?

Also, when I removed the reference to SqlServerCe and added it back, I got an application error in VS2005. This has happened every time with every project I've tried. I have to remove the reference, exit VS, reload VS and add the reference back. Which may all just be a waste of time since it doesn't look like it's doing anything.

One other small thing I noticed in the references is that the path for SqlServerCe has an extra between the "SDK" and "SQL Server" directories:

C:Program FilesMicrosoft Visual Studio 8SmartDevicesSDK\SQL ServerMobilev3.0System.Data.SqlServerCe.dll

I'm very confused at this point and hope someone can clear some of this up for me. Thanks!

Issues With Microsoft SQL Serever 2005 Express Edition And Other Versions Of SQL Express

Feb 20, 2007

I have uninstalled the SQL Server Express Edition that I have installed from the CDs that were given to me during a Chicago Conference when READY TO  LAUNCH Visual Studio 2005, SQL SERVER 2005, and Biz Talk 2005.
Then I went to microsoft website: http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/sql/register/default.aspx and downloaded and installed the so called Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition and I got the messages Error that you read below. Then I Uninstalled Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition  and went again to msdn website and downloaded Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Advanced Services SP1 and installed it. I got again the same message as below.

MESSAGE:

1. First comes a window with the title: €śsetup.exe €“ Unable to Locate Component€?
And it displays a message:
This application has failed to start because MSTDCPRX.dll was not found.
Re-installing the application may fix this problem.
2. After I click the OK button of this window it comes another window with the title: €śMicrosoft SQL Server 2005 Server Setup€?
And it displays a message: Failed to load SqlSpars.dll

Does anybody can tell what is going on with the 3 times I tried to installed different SQL Server 2005 Express Edition and I get the same message?????

Thanks for your help and support when you have time to respond.

SQL Express On Pc / Svr Questions

Apr 3, 2006

I have a few questions about SQL express.

Will SQL express make my workstation (regular PC on network) act as a server? Or does it just allow VB express / Web Developer Express to write code that will work on an actual My SQL server?

The goal is to make a simple DB that will then be used on a website on a live server which has My SQL on it. I don't need SQL express on that server also do I? MY knowledge about SQL is next to null.

Thanks

SQL Express Instal Questions

SQL Express 2005 Install

Question 1) If you leave the hide advance options checked, which of these 3 options does it choose on the Service Account Screen (I believe it is Network Service).

Local Service

Network Service

Local System

Question 2) If you uncheck the hide advance opitions, so you can access the Service Account Screen, which is the better option, local service or local system for a stand alone computer the the database is only accessed by a program runnin gon that computer

Question 3) I have installed SQL Express 2005 on 3 machines, two of them gave me a default instance of SQLExpress, the third of MSSQLExpress. We need the same instance name on all machines, or we would have to change the connection string on the program each time.

Why is the 3rd machine doing that?

Thanks,

Bob

SQL 2000 - Restore From Log Shipped Database After Disaster.

Jul 21, 2007

Is there any need to re-apply SP4 to sql server 2000 if a user database has been restored to it from a non-service packed sql 2000 server.

We inadvertantly did this after a flood and later realised that the log shipped server at the other site was not not service packed.

Does service pack 4 update user databases in any way?

We have not had any major issues with this but I need to rule this out when considering performance issues and so on that have been raised since the recovery.

Any help would be appreciated.

A Couple Of SQL Server Express Questions

Apr 11, 2006

Hello - I'm about to rebuild my website on a nice new windows 2k3 server. I was previously using SQL server 7 but I'd like to use the 2005 edition.
Here's my first question - is the Express edition 2005 good enough to use on my live web server? Are there limits on the amount of connections at any one time?
My second question is this - what's the best way to connect to SQL Server 2005 Express?
At the moment I would use something like:
Server=.SQLEXPRESS;Integrated Security=True;Database=myDB
And then I would set up a COMPUTERNAMEASPNET account under SQL Server 2005 Express.
Is that an ok way to connect??
Any ideas?
Thanks.

Questions On LogFiles: SQL Express 2005

Jul 8, 2007

Note: Please refer to my previous message to see the current VS2005 C# code I am using to create my database.

This database will be used for short term operations. In otherwords, a user will create the database, generate a lot of data that will be created using:

SqlBulkCopy bcp;

Then, there will be 'activity'... updates, queries, deletes, etc for a few days and then the user will at a minimum remove all of the data and at some future point in time, will recreate the data and do the process all over.

In otherwords, I am not concerned about backups or transaction logging or recovery or any of these 'normal' issues of using a SQL database.

That said, how do I use SMO to keep the LDF limited in size and as small as possible (assuming I can't turn of the tranaction log to begin with).

2nd question is...I read soething about being able to log ONLY the exection of a Bulk Copy operation. How do I specify that? This is my SQLBulkCopy code.

SqlBulkCopy bcp;

SqlCommand sqlCmd = new SqlCommand();

sqlCmd.Connection = m_dbFiles.conMain;

bcp = new SqlBulkCopy(sqlCmd.Connection);

bcp.DestinationTableName = "tblMyTable";

bcp.WriteToServer(datatable);

Sql Express Vista Trouble #2

Sep 11, 2007

Actually I should have said #22 but this is beyond the point. It seems the errors pop up and then go away for no reason, then appear again.

I had Sql Server Express with Advanced Features set up all right as far as I can see. It is the connection issue that is causing the headache.

Currently when I try to make a connection with an Sql database I get an error in Visual Studio:

Generating user instance in Sql Server is disabled. Use sp_configure 'user instances enabled' to generate user instances.

So I go to Sql Server, log in, open a new query and type:

sp_configure 'user instances enabled'
GO

I get a table where I can see that

name minimum maximum config_value run_value
user instances enabled 0 1 1 1

Are they enabled? I think, yes. I go back to Vsisual Studio and get the same error. It is possible that I will have to log out in order for all this security garbage to take effect and I will try it but in the meantime, how can I set more than one instance.

I want to complain that these new security provisions that came apparently with SP2 and Vista are totally unnesessary for my applications. I do not have any high security info to worry about, e.g. social security numbers, etc. I would not mind to turn all this stuff off if it is possible at all.

So, how can I set up 3 user instances?

Thanks.

I get an error that the VS could not find a sql Express installed.

I want to clarify that I have installed the SQL express SP2 for vista version and that I can connect to SQL express db using management studio.

I think it is a vista issue probably that UA.

What can I do?

pls do not recommend the next step I already tried itL

If I create the DB on XP and transfer the project to my vista machine the db is there but I cannot connect to it.

SQL Express On Vista With ClickOnce

Feb 7, 2007

SQL Express CTP 2 provides a checkbox that will enrol the user installing the software as a database administrator. If the user fails to check this box, they run as an ordinary user, and hence are not allowed to perform functions such as create database.

In the process of deploying an application via ClickOnce, if SQL Express is not present it will be installed automatically. Also, in the process of deploying a ClickOnce application, we should usually expect to need to create a new database. Currently, if the user takes the default install of SQL Express they will not be a database administrator and will not be able to create the database. The installation will thus fail.

Is anything being done with SQL Express for ClickOnce applications deploying to Vista that will allow us to automatically enrol the user installing SQL Express as a database administrator?

SQL Server 2008 :: Setup Log Shipping From Log Shipped Database?

Mar 20, 2015

We have log shipping for databases from production to back office (BO) environments for users to run reports. In preparation for moving a back office environment to a different server, we want to setup an addition log shipping environment, let’s call it BO2, same as the BO. One of the challenges we had was the amount of time it would take to get the full backup from production to BO2 due to the size of the database. It would take days just to transfer the full backup.

Solution:Let’s just say the database being logged shipped is DB123. Instead of using the full backup of DB123 from production, we use the mdf and ldf of DB123 from current log shipped database on the BO to setup the additional log shipping on BO2.

Steps:1.Setup the directory structure for the undo file (tuf) on the BO2 server same as the BO server.

Note: The undo can be moved to different drive after the log shipping is setup.

2.Stop SQL services on the BO server.

3.Copy the undo file (tuf), mdf, and ldf files of the log shipped database, DB123, from server BO to server BO2.

Note: Keep these files as main copies because they will be used multiple times. Do NOT copy files to where you’ll put the new database files.

4.After the files are copied, start SQL services on BO.

5.On the BO2 server, create an empty database DB123 with database name, file_id, logical names, physical names exactly the same as the ones on the BO server.
Note: Make the size of mdf and ldf small so it doesn’t take long to create the database.

6.Stop SQL Services on the BO2 server.

7.Overwrite the new mdf and ldf files of the empty database DB123 with the mdf and ldf files that were copied over from BO.

8.Start SQL services on BO2.

Note: If the file_id, logical names and physical names are not matching up, the database will be in suspect mode.

9.Do a backup of DB123 with COPY_ONLY.

10.Drop DB123 on BO2 after backup is complete.

11.Use the full backup from previous step to setup log shipping of DB123 on BO2.

Note: Below was the LiteSpeed syntax that was used

exec master.dbo.xp_restore_database @database = N'DB123' ,
@filename = N'F:SQL BackupsDB123_FULL.slsfull',
@filenumber = 1,@with = N'STATS = 10',
@with = N'STANDBY = N''C: MSSQLDataROLLBACK_UNDO_DB123.trn''',
@affinity = 0,@logging = 0

12.Stop SQL services on BO2.

13.Again, overwrite the mdf, ldf and undo file (tuf) of DB123 on server BO2 with mdf, ldf, and undo file (tuf) from BO.

14.Start SQL services on BO2.

15.Replay transaction log from PRD

Note: You can change the location of the undo file by copy the current undo file to the new location and point to new location in “STANDBY” parameter. DO NOT do cut and paste of undo file but do copy and paste.

It works on Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 (SP2) - 10.50.4033.0 (X64) . I have not tried it on SQL Server 2012 yet.

In steps that stop/start SQL services, you can bring the database offline/online.

In a way, this is doing detach/attach a log shipped database.

SQL Server Express 2005 Questions And Issues...

Nov 14, 2007

So I am fairly new to Express and I have installed it on my development machine; much tio my chagrin it is quite difficult to import data into SQLEXPRESS. I have a 'sa' account setup and I have created a new database and table within that database, however, when I try to import data into that table by setting up a link server to excel I am having some major issues!

I ran this code first to create the linked server...

DECLARE @RC int

DECLARE @server nvarchar(128)

DECLARE @srvproduct nvarchar(128)

DECLARE @provider nvarchar(128)

DECLARE @datasrc nvarchar(4000)

DECLARE @location nvarchar(4000)

DECLARE @provstr nvarchar(4000)

DECLARE @catalog nvarchar(128)

-- Set parameter values

SET @server = 'XLTEST_SP'

SET @srvproduct = 'Excel'

SET @provider = 'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0'

SET @datasrc = 'c:Anchor_Hocking blactionlist.xls'

SET @provstr = 'Excel 11.0'

EXEC @RC = [master].[dbo].[sp_addlinkedserver] @server, @srvproduct, @provider, @datasrc, @location, @provstr, @catalog

Next I try to run any of the statement below and I get the errors pasted below...

SELECT * FROM Anchor_Hocking...Sheet1$

EXECUTE SP_TABLES_EX 'Anchor_Hocking'

SELECT * FROM OPENDATASOURCE('Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0',

'Data Source=c:Anchor_Hocking blactionlist.xls;User ID=sa;Password=sa;Extended Properties=Excel 8.0')...Sheet1$

OLE DB provider "Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0" for linked server "Anchor_Hocking" returned message "Cannot start your application. The workgroup information file is missing or opened exclusively by another user.".

Msg 7399, Level 16, State 1, Line 1

The OLE DB provider "Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0" for linked server "Anchor_Hocking" reported an error. Authentication failed.

Msg 7303, Level 16, State 1, Line 1

Cannot initialize the data source object of OLE DB provider "Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0" for linked server "Anchor_Hocking".

The file is not open. I have granted full access rights to all users....I am really frustrated!

Also, how can I get SSIS on this machine with SQLEXPRESS?

Connecting To SQL Express On Vista Issues

May 21, 2008

I'm having issues talking to Vista Sql Express, but selectivly.

The following diagram shows you what works, and what doesn't :

http://www.craznar.com/junk/sqlissue.png

As you can see, the Vista/Express server is running - has all the required connectivity enabled, however we cannot talk from the Windows Server 2003 SQL to the Vista SQL.

The error that is given suggests issues with remote access enabling on Vista - but this is working alsoVista's firewall turned off (We can connect to it).

All machines are on the same subnet, behind the same firewall - Neptune and Headoffice are on a domain, Neptune points to Headoffice for DNS, Headoffice forwards DNS requests to the same DNS all other machines use.

File sharing and Ping work from Headoffice to Neptune ... just can't get SQL connection to work.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

With help from the msdn article at http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms165716.aspx I've been able to create a test install that works fine under XP, but fails under Vista. We have our application installing under the "Program Files" directory, and are copying the database's MDF file into the same directory. We are using AttachDbFileName to connect to the database and under XP the LDF file is created fine. Under Vista we receive an error that the database cannot be attached and I've noticed that the LDF file is not being created. I was receiving the exact same error under XP until I removed the LDF file from the install and allowed SQL Express to create it. I'm guessing that it is an issue in the permissions necessary to write the LDF file out to the applications directory, but that's just a guess. So, I was wondering what the Microsoft recommended method for doing a SQL Express XCopy deployment under Vista was?
