Windows Accounts And User Permissions In MSSQL EXPRESS 2005
May 15, 2008
This may be an idiotic question:
I am attempting to use Visual Web Developer Express with a connection to a SQL Express db from a non-admin account on my XP Pro SP2 machine.
I can do everything in the app under an admin login, but can't seem to configure the db to allow the non-admin account access to the db. I've tried tweaking WMI, using Network Service, Local Service, and Local System with NT AUTHORITY, individual logins, and group permissions, but I'm stuck.
Any thoughts?

Hello,
I'm having a problem using Windows Accounts to login to a SQL 2005 Server.
Here is my setup. The SQL server and web server are separate machines. I'm also not developing directly on the web server.
SQL Server - Windows 2003 Server- SQL 2005- Set to use SQL and Windows AuthenticationWeb Server- Windows 2003 Server- IIS 6.0 - Anonymous Authentication is disabled - Integrated Windows Authentication is enabledApplication web.config:
<?xml version="1.0"?>
<configuration xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/.NetConfiguration/v2.0"><appSettings> <add key="ETR_Environment" value="Dev"/></appSettings>
<connectionStrings> <add connectionString="Data Source=sql-dev-server, 1179;Initial Catalog=ENV_ETR;Integrated Security=SSPI;" name="ETR_Dev"/> <add connectionString="" name="ETR_Prod"/></connectionStrings>
<system.web> <compilation debug="true" strict="false" explicit="true"/> <pages> <namespaces> <clear/> <add namespace="System"/> <add namespace="System.Collections"/> <add namespace="System.Collections.Specialized"/> <add namespace="System.Configuration"/> <add namespace="System.Text"/> <add namespace="System.Text.RegularExpressions"/> <add namespace="System.Web"/> <add namespace="System.Web.Caching"/> <add namespace="System.Web.SessionState"/> <add namespace="System.Web.Security"/> <add namespace="System.Web.Profile"/> <add namespace="System.Web.UI"/> <add namespace="System.Web.UI.WebControls"/> <add namespace="System.Web.UI.WebControls.WebParts"/> <add namespace="System.Web.UI.HtmlControls"/> </namespaces> </pages>
<authentication mode="Windows"></authentication> <customErrors mode="Off"></customErrors> <authorization> <allow users="XXXWilliam.Klein"/> <deny users="*"/> </authorization></system.web></configuration>
The reason why I want to use the windows login to connect to the database is the application needs to keep track of who did what when entering and updating data but still keep them using there windows login accounts. So using a generic account will not work.
What keeps happening is I keep getting this error: Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITYANONYMOUS LOGON'. When trying to connect the database. I've tried this on two web servers on another I get something slightly different: Login failed for user 'XXXWeb-Server$'.
Anybody able to give me any suggestions on how to fix this?

I have a root domain and child domain.
After using ADMT to migrate the domain user or group into the root domain, when I use enterprise manager to try and change the permissions allocated to that domain user/group, i get the 'Error 15401 NT user or Group not found'.
This is a correct error as the user is now in the root domain, however sql (in sysxlogins) still thinks its in the child domain.
Is there a simpler way, other than collecting the users permissions, deleting the user from SQL then adding back in with the correct domainusername format, then adding the permissions back?
I tried renaming the 'name' in sysxlogins (not recommended) and while that worked, whenever I tried to add the migrated user to another database, the login name was missing and would not resolve.
I believe it is something to do with the SID not matching.
Any ideas on how to fix this ?

Hello,
I am creating a windows application that is not going to be used in a controlled environment like a LAN or some other network, so I want to include a local database in the install of this app. Ideally, I would like to use SQL 2005 Express like you would MSDE or Access, but I am not sure if the user must have SQL Server installed on their machine in order for this to work and I don't have a machine without it to test on.
Any help on this is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Derek

We have SQL 2000 Enterprise edition. There are several outside joins to MS Access tables.
I need to find out what would be the best way for me to locate a Windows authenicated users permissions on a table with the SQL database. I cannot seem to find any way to trace this information.
Thank you in advance

DB is developed on local computer with MSSQL 2005 Express. My host is on MSSQL 2005 workgroup. Are they compatible, because I am getting errors? Is my approach wrong?
I have tried several approaches.
A) I created a backup of database on my local, then placed a copy on the server. Then I tried to restore through Server Management Studio. I get this error.
TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio
------------------------------
An exception occurred while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch. (Microsoft.SqlServer.ConnectionInfo)
------------------------------
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
The backed-up database has on-disk structure version 611. The server supports version 539 and cannot restore or upgrade this database.
RESTORE FILELIST is terminating abnormally. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 3169)

B: I also have tried copying the database. I put it in the same path as the other databases that can be read with server management studio on the server. Then, tried to get to it through server managements studio and it did not appear. So I tried to attach it. Then I received this error:
TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio

C: I have also tried opening the Database, and back up file through Server Management Studio. without success.
D: I also tried Windows and Software update at microsoft update, but no updates were recommended for Version on Server.
I'm surprised this is so hard. My original data base was created in same family of software. 2005 MS SQL Express. I could use some direct help from someone experienced with this. Am I doing it wrong or are the DB versions incompatible.

Hi all,After working for weeks on a project in VB.Net, I decided to deploy atest version on a user's computer. The user's XP SP2 computer has sql server xpress 2005 installed, and myVB.net creation. Everything works without problem when the user's XPaccount is set with Administrator permissions. But when i change theuser account to Limited, the program fails with the following message:"Failed to generate a user instance of SQL server due to a failure instarting the process for the user instance. The connection will beclosed."The connection string I'm using is: "DataSource=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename="|DataDirectory|DbTrial1.mdf";IntegratedSecurity=True;User Instance=True;Connect Timeout=30"Is there a workaround to get access for XP users with limited accounts? Many thanks :)p.s. allready tried changing in the connection string to "UserInstance=False", but then i get the error "An attempt to attach anauto-named database..... failed.. etc"And I've already tried the most common suggestion to delete the"SQLEXPRESS" folder in local settingsapplication data... but thatdoesn't do anything either :(

I have 4 new SQL Server 2005 installations on Windows 2003 that I configured at our main office and shipped to a hosting center. All four servers are members of our domain. I set up test datbases with replication on one of the servers and facilitated this with a domain account.
Now that I've moved the servers to the hosting center (which has a DC) and I'm not having any luck adding domain accounts to the permissions section on any of the the SQL Server boxes.
When I try to add a domain account in the SQL Server's permissions window I get "Name Not Found". By every indication the server is connected to the domain. I can log on using my domain account; I can create shares specifying domain accounts but I can't seem to add domain accounts to the SQL server permissions. When I look in the permission's tab I still see the original domain account, I had added back in the main office, stranded by itself in the list of users. We're using mixed authentication by the way.
Why doesn't SQL Server recognize the domain? Where does it get it's list of users? Does the account I'm logging in with just not have the permission to add domain accounts? These diaglogs are slightly different from the normal 'add a user' dialog boxes.
I feel like this must be a simple oversight. Any help would be appreciated. I'd prefer to move away from local accounts to keep things simple.

I would like to check what specific permissions are granted to SQL Server, SQL Server Agent and SQL Server Integration Services account. Hi,
I recently installed an evaluation copy of SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition on my local machine and during the installation I used Local System system account for the SQL Server service and set the server to use Mixed Mode authentication.
I am able to connect to this local server Database Engine with my Windows login through SQL Server Management Studio and am able to perform sysadmin tasks. My question is why?
My thinking was that even though my Windows login would provide me a connection to the server, I would still have to manually add this login to the sysadmin server roles but after checking the sysadmin role, my Windows login isn't in there. The Windows login is not found under Security - Logins in SSMS either.
Can someone tell me should details for the login be visible on the server and why it seems to have sysadmin permissions ?
Thanks

Hello, we currently have our database (MSSQL 2005) on our web server however to do increased traffic and business we are now moving our database to its own server. I was wondering if anyone here knew of some good ways to setup/tune Windows Server 2003 and SQL 2005 for best performance. MSSQL will be the only application running on the server and want to make sure it is as fast as possible!

I just performed a fresh install of MSSQL 2005 Server Developer Edition on my XPSP2 machine along with MSSQL 2005 SP1 and I noticed that errors are not being reported in the Windows Event Viewer. Is there a way to enable/disable logging here?
I need to view these logs because when the tasks > 'copy database' task fails it submits its error in the Windows Event Log however since I reinstalled MSSQL 2005 these log entries don't appear here.
thanks in advance.

In SQL 2005, is this an acceptable (prefered) way to give an application account EXEC permissions for sprocs and funcs in a specific database?
CREATE ROLE db_executor
GRANT EXECUTE TO db_executor
And then of course assign my user to this role on the database level.
I am trying to get away from adding exec to every sproc "manually" and then of course also having to add exec for any new sprocs that get added into the database.

In a previous thread, I got some help from you all in figuring out how to deploy a per-machine desktop application and database so that it would be available to all Windows accounts on the machine. Basically the advice was to create an SQL user for the database with the BUILTINUsers login which had the necessary privileges for connection.I have tried this approach, but I am still having problems with connections for unpriveleged users. I have given the database user the role of db_Owner as well as other roles, but it seems to make little difference. I have been trying the deployment on several machines running XP, and I get several different responses. But primarily I get the "CREATE DATABASE permission denied in database 'master'" error. All of these computers seem to have the same database user level permissions, but obviously there must be differences somewhere. That worries me from a deployment standpoint.
I don't want to make any changes at the server level login properties for Builtinusers, but I have experimented with changing these, and I've found that giving sysadmin privileges to BuiltinUsers works great. But I doubt that anybody would be very happy with that solution.
I'm confused about the "Create Database" message, because I'm not explicitly creating any database at application startup time. It also seems like this might be an attachment problem, but I'm not sure about anything. Is there really an attachment and detachment of the Express database every time the application is run?
So my bottom line questions are:
Which database level privileges do I need to give to my SQL user with BuiltinUsers login so that any Windows account can connect and write to the database?
Can I accomplish this goal without changing any server level privileges for the BuiltinUsers login.
Thank you.

Hi,
I'd like to get the experts' advice on whether SQL server 2005 Express edition (SSE) is suitable for medium scale web applications.
I have looked through the reviews of SSE. From what I understand, its limitations over the MSSQL 2005 Standard are:
1. SSE limits database size to 4GB and memory to 1GB.
2. Support for only 1 CPU.
3. No analysis or reporting services.
4. No full text indexing
5. No SQL Agent.
I have a web application that is currently running on a shared web host with a shared MSSQL 2000 database. I'm thinking of shifting to a Virtual Private Server, where I can install SSE for free.
Currently my app has about 14,000 page views a month, and each of them pulls out data from the database. I don't use any analysis or reporting services, or full text indexing or SQL Agent (for now).
My questions:
1. Is 1GB memory sufficient for this type of application?
2. Is there any reason I should not be using SSE for my type of application?
Thanks in advance for the help.
