Windows App Cannot Access Database When Silently Installing SQL Server Express 05
Jul 6, 2007
I have a windows app I am deploying by CD along with SQL Server - when I manually installed sql server my app can access the db (named instance, local system, mixed mode). I used the exact same settings to do an unattended install for sql express and it does not work. All the settings in the db look the same. Does anyone know what it could be?
Thanks.

I'm attempting to install SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition Management Tools [only] on my workstation which is running Widows XP Pro SP2. I already have VSTS 2005 installed with SQL Server Express and Management Studio Express Edition.
Attempting to do an advanced install with just the Management Tools specified under Client Components, results in the Version Check warning that setup must be run with SKUUPGRADE=1 specified. When I do that, the installation fails with an unexpected error. Clicking the 'Help' button, displays the following info:

Product Name Microsoft SQL Server
Product Version 9.00.2047.00
Message Source setup.rll
Message ID 50000

Sending the info results in:

which isn't much help. I'd appreciate any suggestions on installing the full version of Management Studio other
than uninstalling SQL Server Express...

Hello,
Firstly, can someone confirm that this can be done. Because I am starting to wonder.
I have downloaded the SQL Server 2005 Express install, and attempted to install. Everything goes well. Computer scan indicates that everything is in place, but then when it goes to install the components it states that the following components failed:
- SQL Native Client
- SQL Server Database Services
- Reporting Services
- Workstation Components, Books Online
(Successful items were SQL Setup Support Files, SQL VSS Writer, OWC11, SQL Server Backward-Compatibility Files, SQL Server Management Studio Express).
For those Items that failed, I just get a message stating "Setup failed. Refer to Setup Log'. The setup log tells me little to nothing about why these components failed.
I am also getting the following message part way through install "An installation package for the product Microsoft SQL Server Native Client cannot be found. Try the installation again using a valid copy of the installation package 'sqlncli.mis'". Does anyone know what this means? I downloaded the install from microsoft.com just a few days ago, so if this isn't "valid", then where do I get a valid one.
I'm totally stuck. Have spent almost a day trawling documentation etc. to find why these have not installed, but cannot find any indication of why they wont install.. everything that needs to be in place is. Hoping someone has had similar issues and can help.
Many Thanks in Advance.

Hi everyone...
I'm facing a problem while installing the SQL Server 2005 Express on Windows 2000 Pro with SP4.
After finishing the downloading from Microsoft I start the installation and things seems to go ok but during Extracting Files step a message appears "SQL Server Setup unexpectedly failed. For more information, review the setup summary log file in %Program Files%Microsoft SQL Server90Setup BootstrapLOGSummary.txt" and it terminates the installation.
I located the log file and open it but can't understand the problem..I copy the text and paste it here for anyone who can understand it.Please, it is very importand for me to work with SQL Server for my project. Any advice or information or anything else???
Thank you all,

Hi.
I'm trying to perform a silent install/uninstall of SQL Server 2005 Express.
I manage to install silently, but when trying to uninstall with the following command line:
sqlexpr.exe /qb REMOVE=ALL INSTANCENAME=<INSTANCENAME>
there is one item left behind - "Microsoft SQL Server Native Client"
Does anyone know how to uninstall this as well?
Also, if MSXML 6.0 is already installed when installing SQL Server 2005 Express, when performing an uninstall with the above command line, MSXML 6.0 is also uninstalled, which may not be the desired outcome.

I want to install the SQL Server Express Edition silently at command prompt (but want the dialog boxes, I mean with /qb option), locally, with no network options.
I want to install it with following options
i) In the Feature Selection, I need
a) Data file (Database Services)
b) Shared tools (Database Services)
c) Connectivity Components (Client Components)
d) Management Studio Express (Client Components)
ii) Instance name as €œDefault Instance€?
iii) Service Account as €œUse Built-in service accountà Local System€?
iv) Authentication Mode as €œMix mode€? with sa password as €˜sysadm€™
v) Collate Settings as €œLatin1_General_CS_AI
How could I achieve this using command prompt?
I already had done
start /wait setup.exe /qb ADDLOCAL=ALL SECURITYMODE=SQL SAPWD=sysadm SQLCOLLATION=Latin1_General_CS_AI
any other attribute need to add?
Regards,
Thanks.

I am using an unattended install script to install the database on the client machine. All the settings look correct. But my application cannot access the db -
Error: Cannot open database requested by the login.
Now when I install SQL Server Express manually, it works fine. I have the service running under local system and enabled user instances is true. I cannot figure out the problem(been working on it for 2 days).
Any ideas?

Subject problem has me quite vexed.
I am receiving the following error when attempting to access reporting services... to sum things up real nice and tidy-
I get three login prompts - then the access denied response. It is almost as if it is unable to authenticate the user... anyway... here's the actual error response, I'd really appreciate any input/insight/resolution.
Server Error in '/Reports' Application.
Access to the path 'C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.2Reporting ServicesReportManagerin' is denied.
Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.
Exception Details: System.UnauthorizedAccessException: Access to the path 'C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.2Reporting ServicesReportManagerin' is denied.
ASP.NET is not authorized to access the requested resource. Consider granting access rights to the resource to the ASP.NET request identity. ASP.NET has a base process identity (typically {MACHINE}ASPNET on IIS 5 or Network Service on IIS 6) that is used if the application is not impersonating. If the application is impersonating via <identity impersonate="true"/>, the identity will be the anonymous user (typically IUSR_MACHINENAME) or the authenticated request user.
To grant ASP.NET access to a file, right-click the file in Explorer, choose "Properties" and select the Security tab. Click "Add" to add the appropriate user or group. Highlight the ASP.NET account, and check the boxes for the desired access.

I am having problems connecting to the database. I am trying to use Membership API and for some reason it will no longer connect to the database. I previously had Visual Studio 2005 Standard Edition and it worked just fine, until I tried to install MS SQL Express. I have tried the aspnet_regsql and sqlcmd InstallCommon.sql and both times I received a named pipe error. I look at the configuration and it said named pipes enabled.
I eventually gave up after trying for two days and removed MS SQL Express, but now I am still getting the same error. I tried to uninstall all of the SQL editions and reinstall the MSDE that comes with VS 2005, but I am getting the same error.
When checking the ASP.NET Web Application and testing the provider I receive the following error:
Could not establish a connection to the database.
If you have not yet created the SQL Server database, exit the Web Site Administration tool, use the aspnet_regsql command-line utility to create and configure the database, and then return to this tool to set the provider.
The security tab gives you the following error:
There is a problem with your selected data store. This can be caused by an invalid server name or credentials, or by insufficient permission. It can also be caused by the role manager feature not being enabled. Click the button below to be redirected to a page where you can choose a new data store.
The following message may help in diagnosing the problem: Unable to connect to SQL Server database.
Running the sqlcmd in the command prompt I receive the following error:
Sqlcmd: Error: Connection failure. SQL Native Client is not installed correctly. To correct this, run SQL Server Setup.
I just Visual Studio to work correctly again.
Thanks,
R

Hi there. I've created a windows forms app that connects to a sql server express database. now that it's working on my box, i need to install the entire solution on the end user's machine.
what's the best way to move the database? I found this article:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms165716.aspx
but i'm wondering if anyone can give me some insights based on your own experience.
I'm using ms visual studio 2005 and sql server express 2005.
I'm hoping that all i'll really have to do is copy everything over to the new machine and then edit my connection string in the .exe.config file for my app.
Thanks in advance for your help.

I have a windows forms application that I would like to put in production on several machines. Each machine will contain it's own data and does not need to be networked.
I can use my local connection right now to access the data, but I would like to change my connection so that it will work when installed on a client's machine.
My Current connection string looks like this:
Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename="C:Documents and SettingsMYNAMEMy DocumentsVisual Studio 2005ProjectsInterimApplicationInterimApplicationInterim.mdf";Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True
I believe I could use something like this:
Dim connectionString as string = "Data Source=" & Environment.GetFolderPath(Environment.SpecialFolder.ProgramFiles) & "/InterimApplication/data/Interim.mdf;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True"
However, I am not sure. Also, if the client does not install to the default directory, then this may cause the application to not work properly.
Lastly, I am not sure if the client machine needs any additional software on their computer in order for the application to be capable of connecting to the data source.
Any recommendations, ideas, comments, or general help is greatly appreciated.

Hi guys. I created a database "MyDatabase" using an AD Account "user01" which is a member of a domain group "GroupA". I have created a login in my SQL Server 2005 for this AD group. I have also added the said login as a user of my database. I created other AD users and put them in the same group. When I try to access the database using the other users, I get this message
The server principal "MyDomainuser02" is not able to access the database "MyDatabase" under the current security context.
This KB tells me that my situation is triggered by the first case in which the owner of the database is windows authenticated. I have already set the database to be TRUSTWORTHY. I haven't tried CERTIFICATES though. I believe I haven't done anything complex to warrant this solution.
I'm really lost with the myriads of principals and securables that SQL2005 has. All I want is just to execute a certain set of stored procedures. I can't do this because I can't even execute "USE MyDatabase". What are the permissions I need to give to "GroupA" ?

I need to determine the following about the current authenticated Windows domain user who is trying to access a SQL Server via a trusted connection.
1 Has the current user been granted login access to the trusted SQL Server?
2 Has the current user been granted access to a specific database?
3 Is the current user a member of a specific database role such as (DB_ROLE_ADMINISTRATORS)?

[Note: originally posted this on microsoft.public.sqlserver.programmingbut had no luck there...sorry if you're seeing this twice]Some facts:1) I have an Access database (.mdb file) sitting on my harddrive.2) I have Visual Studio 2005, Sql Server Express, and Sql ServerManagement Studio Express.3) I do *not* have Microsoft Access. What I'm trying to do:I simply want to import the Access database into Sql Server Express. Inother words, I want to end up with a Sql Server Express database thathas all the same tables, keys, and relationships as the Access databaseas well as all the data from it. I can live without the queries storedin the Access database, but those would be nice too. What I've tried so far:I'm able to connect to the Access database using the "Linked Servers"features in Management Studio Express. From there, I was able to writesome simple Transact-SQL queries to find out what tables are in theAccess database and copy them, one at a time, into a Sql Server Expressdatabase. This is definitely a good start, but it doesn't take care of theprimary keys or foreign keys. There appear to be procedures for thoseas well (sp_primarykeys, sp_foreignkeys), but I keep thinking theremust be an easier way.Which brings me to...Questions:Without having to buy additional software/tools, can I import thisAccess database without a lot of programming? If so, how? Thanks in advance,-Dan

I have just installed SQL Server Express 2005 to get around the 2Gb database size limits under Access 2003. My simple 2Gb Access database (simple meaning only 10 tables with 2-10 fields each, vast majority of the data in one of them and mainly Long Integers) became nearly 4Gb when migrated using SSMA - not great when the SQL Server Express database limit is 4Gb. Shrinking makes no difference.
Can anyone suggest why in general a SQL Server Express database would be nearly twice the size as its Access equivalent. Are there some useful tricks or techniques to reduce the apparently massive overhead?

Hi,
A question regarding SQL Server 2005 Express edition. Is it possible to export Access databases into SQL databases without using programming (e.g. using SQL and programming languages)?
I understand you can do this with DTS, but the Express edition seems not have DTS.

I want to migrate my Access XP database to SQL Server 2005 Express Edition. The Start Menu does not display any migration assistant in SQL Server 2005 Express menu list.
How to migrate it?

Hi there,
We've got a Windows 2003 (64 bit edition) box to use as our Database server.
I installed SQL Server 2005 (Standard Edition) on the machine, but I have a feeling it has installed the 32 bit version and not the 64 bit version.
The reason I think this is that the MSSQL directory is under the 32 bit program files directory and not the 64 bit directory, and also when I look at the service properties it says it's running from WOW6432 registry entry.
Is there a separate disc for the 64bit version? Does the installer automatically work out which version to install or is there some sort of switch I have to do to tell it to install the 64 bit version.
Many thanks for your time.
Simon

You may have a requirement that you cannot change where you have oldapps, such as Delphi 3 apps (in my case), that must hobble along untilthe BIG migration money comes into migrate to something better. Andthose old apps may require that you keep SQL 6.5 on the backend. In mycase, that's the case, unfortunately. And Microsoft has completelydried up support for it.You may find that you can't install SQL 6.5 Enterprise Edition onWindows 2000 Server -- it may say that it needs to be NT 4 EnterpriseEdition. I did some testing and have come up with the hook around thisproblem:1. Copy the contents of the SQL 6.5 Ent Edition CD to your hard drive. You're going to need a lot of space.2. Edit the i386setup.inf file (once you have made it not read-only)and find the lines that refer to an if/then statement about "EntOnly"(note no space before Only). When you find this if/then statement, comment that block (about 5 lines, if not mistaken) out by puttingsemicolons as the first character on each line.3. Now run the install by doing something like E:i386msetup.exe, ifE: is your hard drive where you have installed the files copied fromCD. It will run without complaining about the NT 4.

I am a little bit confused about making an installer/deployer.
I have an application using SQL Server 2005 CE (I have just updated to the most recent version Jan 2007). It will run on a new desktop PC (windows XP) if I install the SQL CE runtime and then copy the .EXE and the .SDF database file. This is great but my client wants the whole thing to install as one operation. I thought click once could do this but it seems that is only for Pocket PC targets? Can anyone point me to a method to make an appropriate installer please?
Pete
I am using the following:
SQLServerCE31-EN.msi - installer for SQL CE server runtime
SSCE31VSTools-ENU.exe - installed over VS 2005 SP1.

Hello all,
I have a problem installing a SQL Server 2005 (developper edition) on my windows XP SP2 machine.
When I launch the setup, all the requirements are ok, but I'm just allowed to install client components and documentations. I can't install the database server instance.
The Sql Server is downloaded from MSDN (2 iso files extracted to my HD)
My machine is a P4 2.8Ghz HT with 1Gig of RAM.
Thanks for your help

Has anyone run into the issue of installing SP1 on a 2003 R2 server?
I have seen a post or two on other sites but I cannot seem to find them again.
Install goes great up until it comes to the upgrading of SSIS (Integration Services).
At that point is fails with the error of:
A recently applied update, KB913090, failed to install.
This is a dialog box that I hit the "send error report" button. It then goes to the upgrading of the Client Components (CC) and fails with the same error message of:
A recently applied update, KB913090, failed to install.
The ugrade the continues after I hit the same "send error report"button.
ALL of the other steps complete with SUCESSFULLY. Only the SSIS and Client Components show a failed status in the Installation Prog
In the Installation Complete screen, I can highlight both the SSIS and CC and see an additional error of:
Unable to install Windows Installer MSP file
I then can hit the View Log button (which I have done for the SSIS step) and see the error log but I am having a tough time making heads or tails of it.
I have attached the output from the SSIS error log below.
I have a couple of questions:
1. Is the install of SP1 good for all the other steps that completed successfully
2. Has anyone had issues with installing SP1 on a Windows 2003 R2 server? I have installed SP1 on other Windows 2003 servers NOT running R2 and it ran like a champ.
Thanks ALL!

I am attempting to install SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition on my computer. I've installed Visual Studio 2005 on my machine, but the installation for SQL keeps erroring out. I am getting a red 'x' for MSXML6 and SQL SERVER DATABASE SERVICES. I need help, because I have done everything that I can think to try and I am getting frustrated.

Hello all (sorry for the cross post, I previously posted that message in getting started)
FYI, here's the Report for the system configuration check:
