Wishful Thinking: SourceSafe Integration With SQL Server

Mar 14, 2007

Imagine opening SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS), drilling into a
database, and seeing all objects with little lock symbols in front of
them. That would be true SS integration.
Maybe next version?

I know about creating a project in SSMS and managing connections,
queries, and misc there, but come on, that seems a far cry from what I
long for.

I searched for 3rd party tools and found SQLSourceSafe and Apex SQL
Tools. Does anyone have experience with those?

Using Visual SourceSafe With Sql Server

Jul 23, 2005

I've ready many of the posts on this and other newsgroups in whichpeople describe working practices for source control of databasescripts. We are looking to implement something similar in my currentworkplace. We have agreed that developers should not modify objects such as viewsor stored procedures directly, they should check the script out of VSSfirst, modify it, run it, and then check it back in.The problem we are having is finding a quick, easy way to run all thescripts in VSS in the right order, to create a new database. If wedon't run them in the right order the sysdepends table will beincorrect. If anyone has any suggestions please let me know.Regards,Ross NeilsonSoftware DeveloperInteractive Products Ltd.

SQL Server Management Studio And Visual SourceSafe

Jan 12, 2007

The develpment team where I work is using Visual Studio 2005, SQL Server 2005 and Team Fundation Server. We want to somehow track changes of the stored procedures. We could create a Solution/Project in the SQL Server Management Studio, add all stored procedures to it and add that Solution/Project to the SourceSafe but nothing will stop developers from directly altering stored procedures.

Any ideas on how to prevent developers from making changes to the stored procedures directly?

Thanks.

Am I Thinking Right Or Is It A Bug?

Nov 10, 2000

Please read the following statements. I got my expected results when I use the 3rd statement. How come second statement is giving me junk results.
First statement is just opposite of second and third statement,I believe.

First
-----
select table1.column1 from table1,table2 where table1.column1 =
table2.column1

select table1.column1 from table1 where column1 in (select column1
from table2)

Both results are same here.

The result is all the common rows.

Second
------
select table1.column1 from table1,table2 where table.column1 <> table2.column1

Third
------
select table1.column1 from table1 where column1 not in (select column1 from table2)

SQL 7 - What Is Microsoft Thinking ??

Dec 2, 1999

I don't know what Microsoft was trying to accomplish when they redid the way SQL 7 handles indexing, but as far as I'm concerned they failed badly. They just broke SQL Server, IMHO.

As a developer, I do not want to have to study rocket science just to get my queries to run fast. In SQL 6.5, if I wanted quick response on a join query, all I needed was an index on the fields I was joining on, in the join table. It worked, didn't have to mess with Profilers and Index Tuning Wizards, just load and go.

Now in 7, I might as well not bother. It's going to do what it wants to do regardless. Even if I use the Query Index Analyzer, and let it create the index it recommends, it still doesn't work. I'm sitting here watching queries I used to be able to run in seconds take 15, 20 minutes and longer.

It's time for the average guy to stand up to Microsoft's increasingly heavy hand and tell them to let us make the decisions on how we want to use our tools. Since 1995, they've been on a downhill slide as far as I'm concerned. Each new updgrade of VB, SQL Server, etc. is buggier and more of a hassle to work with than each previous version.

Enough's enough.

MSSQL Not Coming Up Thinking It Is Evaluation Copy

Nov 1, 1999

Hi,

Our front-end GUI person changed the system date one month back to avoid the expiration of the Servelet Exec software. After rebooting the system, MSSQL refuses to come up and the errorlog has the following message: "The evaluation period has expired". The version we had was never an evaluation version!

What's making it think that and is there a way to correct the situation?

Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Thinking About Converting Backup Schedule To Maintenance Plans

Nov 28, 2007

Hi All,

I've just started at a new job that is a little bit of a step up from my old job. At my previous job I was responsible for 5 instances of SQL Server with about 30 databases. My new job has me (and a team of 3 other DBA's) responsible for 100+ instances. The backup schedule and process is a mess. I'm thinking about moving everything to Maintenance Plans (some 2000, some 2005). I've always scheduled individual jobs for each database previously and done index maintenance manually, but I'm kinda leaning toward Maintenance Plans just to simplify everything.

Anyone out there have any input on how and why they chose MP's over scheduling backups db by db? Or anyone out there choose not to use MP's for a particular reason? Input is greatly appreciated.

SQL Sourcesafe Equivalent?

Aug 15, 2006

Recently, my company's deveolpment machine crashed. We had to format the harddrive which meant we lost some of our databases.
We managed to restore the databases, but we do not know in what state, i.e. which stored procedures were written between the restore point and the point the machine crashed.
Tow questions related to this:
1. I was wondering if there is any product that is similar to soursesafe but appied to databases, so that this problem will not happen again. Does Enterprise manager do something like this?
2. I was also wondering if there was anyway to undo an sql command. e.g. my colleague recently ran a command to update a database, but forgot to write the where clause!! That data was recovered aswell, but it would be nice to have some sort of undo button.
Thanks in advance.

Stored Procedures - SourceSafe

Jan 5, 2007

Hi All... Well, another old c++ programmer has found the Lord - I've just written my first stored procedure. And yes, as I've always heard, it's quite cool...

The thing I've never really cared for though is that they sit way out there in the database, far away from all the "other" code. I'm presently involved in an asp.net project and we use SourceSafe. I've seen some mention of VSS with SQL Server on this site and am quite pleased to see it! But for the sake of an old c++ programmer, what are the basics about getting things like stored procedures (and even the database schema for that matter) into sourcesafe? That is what's the easiest way to do it? ; )

For what it's worth, we're using .Net 2.0, Visual Studio 2005, SQL 2005 and VSS 6.0. Thanks for the tips! -- Curt

SQL Express SP2: Cant' Select SourceSafe Plug-In

Apr 21, 2007

Hi,

In SQL Express SP2, when I select Tools > Options, there is a place where I am supposed to be able to specify the source control plug-in. I have SourceSafe 2005 installed on this machine, so I see these choices in the drop-down:

None

Microsoft Visual SourceSafe

Microsoft Visual SourceSafe (Internet)

The problem is that whenever I select one of the SourceSafe options, it goes back to "None".

I'm not even sure how the source control intergration works, but I figured I have to select the plug-in before doing anything else.

How can I select the SourceSafe plug-in under SQL Express SP2?

Thanks,

Mark

XML Package Configuration File Not Added Into Sourcesafe

Jan 16, 2008

Hi,

I've added an XML package configuration file to my SSIS package and it appears to be working fine.

The XML file is located in the same folder as the solution file.

I've recently added the entire solution to Visual Sourcesafe 2005, and I achieved this by doing the following:

1. Right-clicked on the Project name in the solution explorer and selected "Add to source Control".
2. When prompted, provided my Sourcesafe login credentials and clicked "OK"
3. Accepted the default VSS project name and clicked "OK"
4. Clicked "Yes" to allow VSS to create a new project

Problem: The XML configuration file hasn't be added to sourcesafe along with rest of the solution.

I'm able to add the file manually myself, but this doesn't seem right to me. Am I missing something? Should the config file show as part of the Solution in Visual Studio 2005?

Any answers/help would be appreciated greatly.

Thanks

How To Optimize Integration Pacakages Or Best Practices For Integration Services

Sep 11, 2007

Hello friends.
I managed to design an Integration service package, but the desired level of performance has not been achieved(i.e it is performing slow).
So I want to know what are the best practices for optimized solution .
In my package I'm exreacting data from XML file and Storing it in SQL server database with some processing dring data flow.

I'm using
1) Two Script Task Control -In these control,I m opening the connection to XML file through VB.net code and
iterating each record at a time.
2)Two OLE DB Command -Each fetched record from script task component is processed in OLEDB command through
stored procedure and then inseted into database.
3)One for Loop -This loop contains two script Task control and two OLEDB Command control,
(mentioned above),for fetching single record and inserting it in database.
4)One derived Column
5)One Multicast
6)One Character Map
7)One OlEDB Source

As with my current performance I'm able to insert one record in every .5 second (Which is much below to acceptable limits)
Is control lying disabled on SSIS designer pane also affect the performance of execution.

Integration Services :: DB Server And SSIS Server On Different Machine?

Jul 30, 2015

As per this link [URL] we can execute packages only when we install Integration Services (DTEXEC works only after that).

As per this link [URL] we can execute packages from DB Server if integration services is not present on same machine and packages will execute from server from which they were started (i.e. DB Server via job).

My scenario, I have DB server installed on machine A and SSIS server on machine B. I am creating sql agent job on machine A and pointing to packages stored in file system on SSIS server B. My confusion is since we did not install integration services on machine A (DB Server), how packages execute from here? Will the packages run from server A but use DTEXEC of server B? If I am not wrong SQL Agent Job also uses DTEXEC to execute the package so how does it work without integration services installed?
