Writing Multiple SQL Tables To One Text File
Apr 7, 2008
I am trying to create a text file from multiple SQL Tables using @BCP_Command. I tried using DTS and SQL but the number of columns in the tables have to be the same size when doing a union. I also not to place a delimeter between each column. I've learned how to use BCP_commands on one file not sure if you can make it work with two or more.

I have a package that contains three database tables (Header, detail and trailer record) each table is connected via a OLE DB source in SSIS. Each table varies in the amount of colums it holds and niether of the tables have the same field names. I need to transfer all data, from each table, in order, to a flat file destination.

I have a text file which contains the data that has to be inserted into multiple tables. The columnames of table 1 form the H1 follwed by Details D1,D1,D1...
The column names of table two form the H2 followed by details D2,D2,D2 so on and similarly for Table 3.
Am using a link server to the file directory and schema.ini which defines the column names fofr the text file
Is there any way of defining column names for more than one table through the schema.ini? or is there any other way through I can parse the text file contents to multiple tables?
Sample text file:
H1,JobDate,JobNumber,FileName,
D1,13/02/2008,asdf123,text1.txt
D1,13/02/2008,asdf123,text2.txt
D1,13/02/2008,asdf123,text3.txt
H2,PagesUsed,PagesPrinted,Pages emailed
D2,10,10,9
D2,1000,100,99
D2,50,22,93
Schema.Ini - defined for the first table
[LogConfig.txt]
Format=CSVDelimited
CharacterSet=ANSI
ColNameHeaders=true
Col1=JobDateText Width 20
Col2=JobNumberText Width 20
Col3=FileName Text Width 100
Hoe do i define the column names for the second table. All these contents are in a single text file and need to be parsed only thru sql.
Any help/suggestions are welcome..
Thanks a lot for taking time to read this.

I have a Foreach loop which scans a table, and gets names of a bunch of procedures, and then back in the foreach loop, they get executed. Im trying to figure out how I can create a sort of log file to say the name of the procedure that is getting executed currently and the current date time stamp onto a flat file. I havent been able to figure this out yet..anyone know how to do this? I grab the names of the storedprocedures from the table and store it in a variable and use the name from the variable to actually execute the stored procedure.
I guess in essence, the question is how do i directly write lines of 'text' (from say a variable) into a flat file.

Can someone show me the command string required to write data out to 2 or 3 tables at once? How about how to write 2 entries at once? Write now my solution writes 1 record to a table and then I write somewhere around 40-200 records to a second child . Write now I'm writing like this:Open --> Add 1 record in table #1 --> closeOpen --> Add 1 record in table #2 --> closeOpen --> Add 1 record in table #2 --> closeOpen --> Add 1 record in table #2 --> closeOpen --> Add 1 record in table #2 --> closeand I'm just wondering if there is a better approach, such as writing all the data at once. Something like:Open --> Add 1 record in table #1 --> Add 5 records in table #2 --> close

Is there a quick way to extract a full dump of 50 tables to 50 corresponding text files?
i.e.
table_a has to be extracted to table_a.txt
table_b has to be extracted to table_b.txt
table_c has to be extracted to table_c.txt
etc.
I don't want to have to add each one separately by hand in the DTSX package designer.
I can't see any way to do it in a loop (because you have to do the field mapping).
I can't seem to get the DTS Wizard to help - it only seems to be able to handle one table-to-text extract at any one time.
And I've tried editing the DTXS file directly (in XML) but it looks like it's going to be rather complex, even if I only do it to define the connection managers.
Feel free to suggest any better way to do this, though the specification has already been agreed, so I'm unlikely to be able to change it.
Thanks

Want to write from a table variable to a text file from a stored procedure.Read about xp_cmdshell bcp etc. but worried because it's supposed to be a security problem and needs to be from a permanent database. Also am getting error "The EXECUTE permission was denied on the object 'xp_cmdshell'..."
1. Is xp_cmdshell a bad idea to use even if I get permissions ?
2. Can a "permanent" table be used in a stored procedure starting out fresh each time with 0 rows rather than use a table variable ?

I am trying to export data from a query in SQL Server 2005 SSIS to a flat file destination. Everything works fine except the rows returned from my query are written to the flat file in one long string (i.e., without line breaks). I have tried appending a new line character to the rows returned from the query but that only throws an error when the package is executed. My rows returned from the query are 133 characters wide (essentially only one column per row) so I have set the properties accordingly for a fixed width file format with 133 character wide rows.
Any suggestions or ideas on how to correct this would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Michael

Hi, i'm trying to do a full text search on my site to add a weighting score to my results. I have the following database structure:
Documents: - DocumentID (int, PK) - Title (varchar) - Content (text) - CategoryID (int, FK)
Categories: - CategoryID (int, PK) - CategoryName (varchar)
I need to create a full text index which searches the Title, Content and CategoryName fields. I figured since i needed to search the CategoryName field i would create an indexed view. I tried to execute the following query:
CREATE VIEW vw_DocumentsWITH SCHEMABINDING ASSELECT dbo.Documents.DocumentID, dbo.Documents.Title, dbo.Documents.[Content], dbo.Documents.CategoryID, dbo.Categories.CategoryNameFROM dbo.Categories INNER JOIN dbo.Documents ON dbo.Categories.CategoryID = dbo.Documents.CategoryID
GOCREATE UNIQUE CLUSTERED INDEX vw_DocumentsIndexON vw_Documents(DocumentID)
But this gave me the error:
Cannot create index on view 'dbname.dbo.vw_Documents'. It contains text, ntext, image or xml columns.
I tried converting the Content to a varchar(max) within my view but it still didn't like.
Appreciate if someone can tell me how this can be done as surely what i'm trying to do is not ground breaking.

Anyone have any recommendations on how to bring together a search across multiple tables? Like I'd love to do a search where i searched for the product name, company name or tag all in one query (though all are in separate tables)... is that possible? Individually, it's easy, but combined it's very hard.

Hi, I'm using SQL Express Advanced CTP and I'm in the process of adding a search facility to an asp.net site. I'm having a huge problem deciding the easiest and most optimised method to use when creating the index using multiple tables and where I can't seem to to produce a unique, clustered index.
The site I'm testing on is a portal in which we have various, different clients advertising their business.
A user will be able to search using keywords such as business activity, business location and anything else that may appear in the business / publicity descriptions.
A publicity (publicity_id) may belong to one or more TOWNS (ville_id), e.g., Business A might have a promotional offer that applies to three local towns, Business B to all towns and Business C to just one town.
A publicity may belong to one or more ACTIVITIES (activity_id), e.g., Business D is a resturant but has also a bar and Business E belongs to prêt-à -porter, fashion, and beauty.
I'm using a view (ActivePubs) to produce a query across multiple tables Clients (business name), Publicities (publicity descriptions), Towns and Activities.
So from the nature of how the publicities are connected to activities and towns, I have many to many relationships that produce duplicate publicity_id values when I create the view, and thus this provides a problem when trying to create a unique, clustered index on ActivePubs; and none of the coloumns produce unique values that monotonically increases, ideal, I believe, for creating unique, clustered indexs. I have also read that it is only best to use interger values for creating unique, clustered indexes.
I thought that if I SELECT the row number in ActivePubs,
SELECT ROW_NUMBER() OVER (ORDER BY dbo.Publicities.publicity_id) AS ROWNUM, ...
in addition to the rest of the query, then I might be able to use the unique values from the query result to create the unique, clustered index
CREATE UNIQUE CLUSTERED INDEX CL_Inx_Pubs ON ActivePubs(ROWNUM)
but instead this produces the following error...
Cannot create index on view "ActivePubs" because it contains a ranking or aggregate window function. Remove the function from the view definition or, alternatively, do not index the view.
So I scrapped this idea but without this method using just
CREATE UNIQUE CLUSTERED INDEX CL_Inx_Pubs ON ActivePubs(publicity_id)
I get the following error...
CREATE UNIQUE INDEX terminated because a duplicate key was found for object name 'ActivePubs' and index name 'CL_Inx_Pubs'. The duplicate key value is (32).
I did consider NOT using a UNIQUE clustered index, but got this error...
Cannot create nonunique clustered index on view 'daysandnights.ActivePubs' because only unique clustered indexes are allowed. Consider creating unique clustered index instead.
The only other method I think about using is storing the query in a temporary table instead of using a view, then creating an additional column in the temporary table to store a unique, automatically incremented, PK for the table to give me my unique index, but my guess is that this is overkill?
Much appreciate any help you can provide.
Deakus

Hello,We are developing an application against an MS SQL Server 2000 databasewhich requires that we implement full-text searching across columns inmultiple tables. The research that we have conducted seems to indicatethat this is not directly possible within SQL Server 2000. And we canfind no way to implement this as the catalogs that are generated aretable specific. As a work-around, we are planning to create a secondary table usedstrictly for searching which is going to denormalize and combine thesearchable data into one catalog. We just want to confirm that this isthe recommended approach or if there is an alternate solution anyonehas used. Please note that upgrading to SQL Server 2005 is not anoption.Thanks.John FlemingJoin Bytes!

Hi,
I have tried this code from http://jtkane.spaces.live.com/Blog/cns!1pWDBCiDX1uvH5ATJmNCVLPQ!316.entry for full-text search on multiple tables & columns.
Here's my code:
SELECT * from [tStaffDir] AS e, [tStaffDir_PrevEmp] t,CONTAINSTABLE([tStaffDir], *, @Name) as AwhereA.[KEY] = e.[ID] andt.[ID] = e.[ID]
I have FT the both the tables above and I am able to get results from the [tStaffDir] table but not the [tStaffDir_PrevEmp] table. The [tStaffDir_PrevEmp] table does have a column (which is [ID]) that is indexed, unique and non-Nullable.Please advise what I should do and look out for.
Many Thanks.

Hi, There have been a number of posts on querying multiple tables using full text in SQL Server. I haven't quite found the answer I'm looking for, and I'm aware that in 2005 some full text functionality changed. I have an Events table which joins to a Venue table and also a many-to-many link (via a table called EventsToArtists) to an Artists table. When a user searches for "Rolling Stones Wembley" (without the apostrophes), I want the query to look in the following columns:Event.EventNameEvent.DescriptionArtists.ArtistNameVenue.VenueNameI have done quite a bit of testing on this, and haven't yet got the desired results. Rolling Stones will be found in the Artists table, and Wembley in the Venue table. At the moment, if I search for Rolling Stones, it behaves as expected. But if search for the venue name as well I get no results. I'm pretty sure this is because EventName wouldn't contain all key words and so the record is excluded from the results. At the moment I am using INNER JOINs between the tables....perhaps I should be executing a full text search on each table's catalogue and then do a UNION to join the resultsets?Hope you can point me in the right direction. Thanks

Can the header record be read into one table, the detail into another and the trailer into a third within one data transformation or would this have to be done with an active script task.
I then have to take this data and write it back out to one file with a header and detail lines.
Would vb be better for that part or can it be done easily with active script using the file system object. I could write the one header record and append the detail lines after.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
DTS newbie.

Quick Question!
If you have both invoice header lines and invoice detail lines in a comma delimited file, how can I get the data in the file to be imported into two different tables. I can produce a text file eg:
1,20,10/03/2002,39 High Street Any Town,,
2,20,Fluffy Slippers,2,Red,10.99
2,20,Pyjamas,3,Black,15.99
2,20,Trousers,1,Lilac,24.99
1,21,10/03/2002,11 Gibson Close,
2,21,Sandles,1,Black,12.99
2,21,Shoes,4,Blue,23.99
1,22,13/03/2002,45 Mill Street,
2,22,Womble Feet,4,White,16.99
2,22,Glass Slipper,1,Transparent,23.99
Lines with 1 in the first column should go in the InvoiceHeader table
Lines with 2 in the first column should go in the InvoiceDetails table.
I have tried with DTS but to no avial - ActiveX scrips in the Transform Data Task can only seem to access one data destination - it one table not two.
Any Ideas?

now i have to transfer a1.txt file data ----to--- x1b1.txt file data ----to--- y2c1.txt file data ----to--- z3
using SSIS. like that, i have to transfer more than 250 files at a time.manually binding 250 files into the package is very cumbersome and time consuming process.

This file format has multiple levels (X12).One level could have one or more instances of thenext level contained within it. Kind of like XML,except that some sections have no end tags, and theones that do have end tags actually have a _different_tag for the end. (ISA ...IEA or GS ... GE)It's easy enough to read a line at a time, see whattype it is, and insert its parts into the appropriatetable. Keeping track of the keys of the parent levelfor relationships. But I'm wandering whether there's some (not impossiblycomplex) more efficient method with SQL and/or DTS.--Wes GroleauIf you put garbage in a computer nothing comes out but garbage. But this garbage, having passed through a very expensive machine,is somehow ennobled and none dare criticize it.

I need to export data from multiple tables into one single file. The big problem here is that the tables will have different column types.
I am attempting to create something that allows users to be able to send me the contents of their tables's, through either email or ftp. I would prefer to make it easier for them so they only have to deal with one file, instead of the multiple files that bcp and dts create when exporting from multiple tables.
I was thinking of using DTS or BCP and then join (append) the files (either zip them or append the files together in some fashion), but I was hoping that there was an easier method out there.
Any ideas on how I may accomplish this would be greatly appreciated.

So here's the issue
16 flat files all fixed width. Some over 350 columns.
Open flat file 1
extract id and go see if its in table 1, if true update table 1 with first 30 columns
otherwise insert into table 1 first 30 columns.
goto table 2, lookup id, insert/update next 30 columns...etc..etc..for 10 different tables
So I've got my flat file source, I do a derived column to convert the dates, i've got a lookup for table 1, then 2 ole db commands, 1 for update if lookup successful, 1 for insert if lookup fails.
How can I pass the id as a param into the update command so it updates where x = 'x'
also I need a pointer on doing the next lookup, eg table 2, would I do this as some sort of loop?.
If you can help great, but, please don't just reply with "I'd use this object"...then no explanation of how

Probably a stupid and regularly asked question but I can't seem to find an answer, so here goes,
we have 16 .txt files, some with over 350 columns.
That info from each individual file needs importing to multiple sql tables.
need to look at sql table1 does record exist? if not create new then add in data once its been transformed eg datetime from yyyymmdd into datetime values [managed to get this using derived column] for first 20 columns, otherwise do update for the 20 columns...
then look at sql table2 and repeat for next n columns....
So I was wondering is it going to be better to write this as a dtsx package? if so can you point me to an example
or should I just write the code as part of a code behind page that scrapes the info and does a standard update/insert procedure?
Any help would be welcome.
thanks

I am trying to take an entire MS SQL database and put it in an sql file. I have succesfully copied the tables into an sql file by highlighting the tables in enterprise manager and choosing 'generate sql script'.
That gives me the structure, but now I would like the data (in insert statements). I have looked in enterprise manager's export wizard and sql analyzer to no avail. There seem to be a lot of options for exporting data except this one! Please point me in the right direction.
At the end of the day, I would like to be able to put everything in a text file. Then, should I have problems, I can just copy my text into query analyzer and have a brand new database.
Thank you in advance.
