XML Newbie: Sql 2005 Compliance To XML Standards
Nov 24, 2006I was told that XML names must not start with the letters xml (or XML, or Xml, etc) But I was able to store such data in sql 2005. Any thoughts on this one?

IntelliSense And Standards Compliance Tools For SQL Coding
May 13, 2008Visual Studio provides IntelliSense and targeted standards compliance code checkers that are extremely useful when writing code. A good example is for web pages targeted to XHTML 1.0 transitional versus strict versus XHTML 1.1.
Is there anything comparable for SQL coding in any of the Microsoft products whether Visual Studio or SQL Server Management Studio or any other development environment?
I'm looking for IntelliSense that can be targeted to one of three alternative configurations: (1) ANSI SQL-92 only, or (2) ANSI SQL-99 only, or alternatively, (3) T-SQL with proprietary Microsoft features/functions (ie, not ANSI compliant in the sense that it is no longer portable per ANSI criteria - it will break when ported due to presence of Microsoft proprietary features/functions).
If standards targeted IntelliSense is not available in any of the Microsoft products for SQL development, is there any third-party product that provides this capability?
MSSQL And Y2K Compliance

MS had come up with SQL 6.5 SP5 which fixes Y2K problems and hopefully
SQL 7.0 is already Compliant.
Now, I know that MS has beta tested before releasing these fixes. But as we all know, sometimes they do not behave the way they are supposed to. Therefore, I would like to make sure by running some tests against
SQL 6.5 SP5 just to make sure these claims are correct.
Does anydoby have a set of tests designed for this purpose which he would
be willing to share with the readers of this forum ?

May 2, 2007Does anyone know of a good tutorial for setting up a website for HIPAA compliance? In particular, what's involved in setting up Sql Server to be compliant?
I'm developing a simple c# website for a friend who owns a small company based in the medical field. Now that his company is growing, he wants to allow his doctors to log into his website to view their patients' test results rather than having to snail mail out the test results every day.
This brings us to a rather delicate issue because even though it's just a few simple pages on the website to view this test result data, I think we're now into HIPAA compliance territory. Meaning we'll have to look at more secure (and expensive) measures than what is currently being performed. For example, I was looking at a web hosting service that provides .net hosting & shared sql server for $15/month. Will I now need to look into a $199/month dedicated server (which probably would cancel the project since, as I said, it's just a simple website with a few small simple features).

Sql 2005 Trigger - Newbie
Jul 10, 2006I have two tables "Inventory" and "Product". User creates a product then assignes inventory to that product.
The product table and the inventory table both have the same two fields, "GDS" and "prodID" and both share the same field and value of ProductID.
I'm trying to create a trigger for the Inventory table so when the Inventory table has an update or insert,
the values from Product.GDS and Product.prodID values go into the Inventory's record for Inventory.GDS and Inventory.prodID
I an having problems with the trigger as this is my first attempt in creating a trigger.

SQL Server 2005 Newbie
Aug 7, 2006I am relatively new to SQL Server and I have 2005. I am developing a database with an Access ADP frontend. The development is taking place on my laptop running a separate instance of SQL Server. I am trying to put the database on the production server and I am not sure how to proceed.
My laptop is not part of the network so I need to create a file and then import it on the SQL Server instance running on the production server. I thought I could do a backup and restore, but apparently that is not working.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Newbie: Sql 2005 Encryption --- Or Where Do I Put That Key?
May 23, 2006I can encrypt columns in sql 2005 but where do I store the key to decrypt the columns?
I can store the key in the database (or server on which the database resides) but I think that offers little security. I could store the key on another server that the sql server accesses only upon startup (though I don't know exactly how to do that). Or I could store the key on a removable drive that is read (and only needed) when the sql server starts up.
What are your ideas on this matter?

Visual C++ 2005 (C++/CLI) - Newbie With ADO

I've been working for about 20 years now with databases on other platforms but am at my first step with ADO. I created an application which is drawing as requested different forms on screen using GDI+, eventually DirectX. Now I'm at the stage of saving several infos into a Database.
For simplicity, I would like to use a database for which there is no need to install any other components. I thought of using Access Database but I realized that I'm unable to create it except from Microsoft Access which is not installed on my machine...
When programming with Clarion (SoftVelocity), apart interfacing with Oracle, any other files (ex: TopSpeed files) could be designed from within application designer and then created from scratch by resulting application. Considering this, is there any type of database that I can use and can be created/designed directly from within Visual Studio 2005?
My goal is that, if I distribute an application, I don't want my people to install anything else than simply install the resulting .exe file which should then be able to create by itself, when necessary, any database files it needs. Am I dreaming?

One of the new tests that we are running have to do with load testing an application with a constrained network pipe. I like this. One of my beefs has been related to stored procedures that return bloated result sets. This new set of tests potentially gives me some more amunition to use when I review stored procedures. A piece that I would like to produce as a result of this has to do with establishing an output bandwidth standard for our database servers. I have a few biased ideas but I would like to know if any of you have any similar pre-existing standards along this line. Any help?

Feb 28, 2006I want to install SQL Server so at least the tables are stored on a D: drive rather than the default C: drive. If I can get the whole thing there, it would be best.
While installing S.S. the first time, I only came across one place to change a directory. After changing it, tables were still placed on the C: drive.
I am working with SQL Server 2005 Standard edition and using default settings, except for the directory of course.

Jan 21, 2015I have an application that stores xml data in an unusal manor. Basically a SQL Key column and an XML string.The XML string is not really standard XML, but it is what it is, and I'm stuck with it. It is in the format;

I am able to pull values out via

However I've been struggling with selecting row with a LIKE clause. Something like ;
SELECT *
FROM dbo.F_UserXMLTable
where XMLRECORD.value('(./c1)[1]', 'VARCHAR(8000)') like 'First%'
I have tried a number of permutations of XML syntax but so far have been stumpled.
Please note "<row key="Value.01" xml:space="preserve">" has a <SP> in the name 'row key' .

Apr 25, 2008Having a difficult time setting up a development environment and a set of standards for SSIS package development.
First of all, you can't run the dataflow object "SQL Server Destination" in BIDS because BULKCOPY can only be run from the actual server. So how do you test/debug a package with this object in it?
Second of all, if you create an SSIS package on a developer computer in BIDS, and then import it into the SSIS package store on your development SQL server, you can't run the package from Management Studio on the developer PC. You get the error "DTS_E_PRODUCTLEVELTOLOW" when it tries to run any of the SSIS. Do I have to have SSIS installed on the developer client machine? How do I do that without installing a full server instance on each client machine (not to mention the licsense issues)?
Lastly, what protection level would you suggest using for production? We are having issues with ODBC connection passwords being decrypted and thus package steps failing in using "EncryptSensitiveWithUserKey". What exactly does this protection level do? Our network is physically very locked down, so we arent worried about SSIS package security too much, just looking for a way for them to work reliably without having to setup complicated security scenarios.

When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections.
The command i'm running is:
bcp territore.dbo.import in territorydata.csv -T -c
territore is my database name... and dbo i think is the owner name.
and the table is called Import
I don't know how to check the default settings to see if remote connections are enabled. Any help would be appreciated.
Newbie Question: WinApp Authentication To SQL 2005
Jan 5, 2007I'm developing a small WinForms windows application (in c#). The application will communicate with an SQL 2005 server on the same network. I'm not able to use windows integrated authentication since the client users will not be members of the same domain as the SQL server.
The thing is, I want the program to Identify itself as the same user in the database regardless of witch user that is logging in. In other words, a separate SQL-access account. The complete end user authentication will be against credentials stored inside my database. In this way I will not have to create separate database users for each user.
This would be easy solved if I stored the common sql-server account somewhere inside the application, however I realise that it's not a good idéa. (The saved password will not be safe)
So, my question is: Is there some "best practise" way of solving this problem?

1. I am looking for a SSIS Standards document or source. A document developer can use for developing ssis package. This should include how to name each container, task , and how to organize things. Basics of SSIS. Is there some kind of source where i can find this information . We are starting out to migrate from informatica to SSIS but before we do that we would like to put standards in place so all SSIS development is consistent.
