XML Source Produces DT_UI8 Key Columns - Which SQL Server Data Type To Store?
Aug 12, 2007
I'm using the XML Source to process a hierarchical set of XML. As such, the XML Source creates keys to maintain the hierarchy. This is very convenient, and keeps me from having to invent my own keys.
The problem is that the datatype of these keys defaults to DT_UI8. Which SQL Server 2005 datatype should I use to store these values in my staging tables? BIGINT corresponds to DT_I8, which can't accept DT_UI8 values.
Hello, I'm trying to build a integration service package importing data from XML files and directs this data to different MS SQL server 2005 Database tables. Can someone suggest me what is equivalent(mapping) data type of DT_UI8 in Sql server 2005 for Integration Services.
Or how to consume DT_UI8 fields in SQL server 2005.
security ids seem to be made up of at least 3 32 bit unsigned numbers and a few smaller numbers. We believe their lengths vary. We dont mind dropping the "S" from the front. What data type do you recommend be used for their storage? We expect only limited joins and user visibility on this column. We may wish to create an index on this column. We think varchar and varbinary are the two major choices.
The table in SQL has column Availability Decimal (8,8)
Code in c# using sqlbulkcopy trying to insert values like 0.0000, 0.9999, 29.999 into the field Availability we tried the datatype float , but it is converting values to scientific expressions€¦(eg: 8E-05) and the values displayed in reports are scientifc expressions which is not expected we need to store values as is

What datatype should I take to store time in a table -- datetime , float or decimal?
my requirement is to store "Worked Hours in a day by an employee" in the field say, 9 hrs and 30 mins.
I should be able to manipulate data in this field such as total hours present in the month, extra hours worked in a day (considering 9 hrs as standard time),less hours worked in a day, and so on
Hello friends what is the right datatype to store the hours and minutes part in the database? i found some info which says we have to convert the duration(hrs and min) into minutes and then store is it the right approach? Regards Sara
I have a C# app linked to a SQL db and I need to store it's version number in a table (could be something like 1.2.789) but I cannot find any datatype which allows me to do this.
I could create three fields in the table for each number but I don't want to.

Hi. I am trying to extract the data returned from a store procedure to a flat file. However, it fail to execute this package in the OLE DB Source. I select the SQL Command in the Data Access Mode, then use:
USE [SecurityMaster] EXEC [dbo].[smf_ListEquity]
It runs ok in the Preview, but not in the Run. Then the system returns during executing the package:
Error: 0xC02092B4 at Load TickerList, OLE DB Source [510]: A rowset based on the SQL command was not returned by the OLE DB provider. Error: 0xC004701A at Load TickerList, DTS.Pipeline: component "OLE DB Source" (510) failed the pre-execute phase and returned error code 0xC02092B4.
I was working on figuring out where a certain application wasstoring the multiple selection choices I was doing through the app.I finally figured out that they were being store in an IMAGEdata type colum with the variable length of 26 bytes. This is the first time I ran into such way of storing multipleselections in a single Image data type.Is this a better alternative than to store into a One-to-Manytables? If so then I'll have to consider using the Image datatype approach next time I have to do something like storing1 to thousands of selections.Thank you
I've been working on an application that uploads an RDL to Reporting Services programmatically. I'm having problem with the data source properties for my uploaded report. The datasource for my report is custom datasource. It work s fine if the report still did not exist. But if the report already exist, after I upload the report to Reporting Services, the function will overwrite the RDL but it did not overwrite the Data source type correctly. Other setting like connection string is overwritten correctly.
For example, I already have RDL ABC with Data source type SQL, when I try to overwrite the existing RDL ABC which have Data source type Assembly, it still hold the SQL value for the data source type. But in the RDL itself (I checked in the rdl script in <DataProvider> tag), the value already overwritten to Assembly.
This problem also happen when I try to upload RDL using Report Manager. The Data source type are not overwritten by the action.
What should I do? Why it did not overwrite the datasource type? Maybe I do anything wrong here. I dont know what. Hope someone can help.
I have a package that reads a table for a file path of a excel file. This gets passed to a variable and then this file is imported into a staging table for further transformation work. The issue i have is that file 1 may contain data in Column A which is 50 characters long in which case i have to import the excel as a DT_WSTR, do a data conversion to a DT_STR and load to the staging table. However file 2 may contain data in Column which is over 255 characters in which case it would import as a DT_NTEXT which i then transform to a DT_TEXT and then to a DT_STR. I used a fixed file path in the Excel Connection to start with which was for File 1 so the datatype for column 1 is a DT_WSTR. I then changed the excel connection to a filepath variable, put the path of file 2 in my table and called it from my package. It failed as the data exceeding 255 characters in column 1 needed to be a DT_NTEXT. I can change it and it works but if i then run the package using file 1 (less than 255 characters) it fails again as it wants it to be a DT_WSTR.
Is there anyway around this? Am i missing something as i would have thought that by setting it to DT_NTEXT this would cover data under 255 characters as well.
Sorry for the confusing subject. Here's what im doing:I have a table of products. Products have N categories andsubcategories. Right now its 4. But there could be more down theline so it needs to be extensible. So ive created a product table. Then a category table that has manycategories of products, of which a product can belong to N number ofthese categories. Finally a ProductCategory "match" table. This is pretty straigth forward. But im getting confused as to how towrite views/sprocs to pull out rows of products that list all theproducts categories as columns in a single query view. For example:lets say productId 1 is Cap'n Crunch cereal. It is in 3 categories:Cereal, Food for Kids, Crunchy food, and Boxed. So we have:Product----------------1 Capn CrunchCategories-----------------1 Cereal2 Food for Kids3 Crunchy food4 BoxedProductCategories------------------1 11 21 31 4How do I go about writing a query that returns a single result set fora view or data set (for use in a GridView control) where I would havethe following result:Product results---------------------------------ProductId ProductName Category 1 Category 2Category 3 Category N ...------------------------------------------------------------------------1 Capn Crunch Cereal Food for Kids Crunchy foodBoxedAm I just thinking about this all wrong? Sure seems like it.Cheers,Will
Hi Using ASP.NET 2.0, Sql Server 2005. I have a simple page (NOT a formview) with some entries textbox's , checkbox and dropdownlistbox's I want to link a datasource to the 'Item Page' and bind the datasource's values to the page The select statement is Select a.IssueID, a.ProjectID, a.VersionID, a.toincludeversionid, a.Version, a.toincludeversion, a.TypeofEntryID, a.PriorityID, a.WorkFlowID, a.Title, a.Area, a.Details, a.Question, a.Answer, a.HowToRepro, a.DevelopersNotes, a.TestersNotes, b.ProjectID, b.ProjectName, OldVersion.Version, ToIncludeVersion.Version, d.DESCRIPTION, e.DESCRIPTION,
x.TaskID as TaskID, x.DESCRIPTION as TaskDescription, z.Taskdone, CONVERT (char(9),z.TaskAssignedDate, 3) AS Workflowdate, z.StaffID as StaffID, w.username, y.latest_workflowid from issue as a Inner join ProjS b on b.ProjectId=a.ProjectID Left Outer join Version OldVersion on a.VersionID=OldVersion.VersionID Left Outer join Version ToIncludeVersion on a.VersionID= ToIncludeVersion.VersionID Inner join TypeOfEntry d on d.TypeOfEntryID=a.TypeofEntryID Inner join Priority e on e.PriorityID=a.PriorityID
inner join workflow z on z.issueid=a.issueid Inner join (select issueid, max(workflowid) as latest_workflowid from workflow group by issueid) y on y.latest_workflowid=z.workflowid Inner join task x on x.taskid=z.taskid Inner join staffls w on w.StaffID=z.StaffID
Where a.IssueID= @IssueID
I hope I have made query clear, if not I don't mind explaining more.
Q: How do I use Calculated Columns from a Data Source View in an OLEDB Data Source Adapter.
I took the following steps:
- Created new SSIS project - Added a Data Source connecting to a SQLServer2005 DB (MyDataSource) - Added a Data Source View based on MyDataSource (MyDSV) - Created a Calcualted field to Table Object MyTable (MyCalcField) - Added a Connection Manager based on MyDSV - Added Data Flow to Project - Added OLEDB Source Adapter to Data Flow - Attempting to Access Calculated Field MyCalcField to be used in Data Flow.
ISSUE: I can't seem to find a way to get the Calculated field to pass through. It's as though this metadata is not available to the Flow.
Hi Experts, I have an urgent needs. I want to store null for decimal type to sql server. But I do not know how to do that. I get data from user input. If the user did not enter anything in the textbox, then I want to store null to sql server. I list a piece od code below. I got error in the last line fItemObject.ChargeAmount = null;. if (!String.IsNullOrEmpty(txtDescription.Text)) myObject.LongDesc = txtLongDesc.Text; else myObject.LongDesc = null; if (!String.IsNullOrEmpty(txtAmount.Text)) myObject.Amount = Convert.ToDecimal(txtChargeAmount.Text); else myObject.ChargeAmount = null; // Then I submit the myobject to the sql server. Thank you very much in adavance!
Hi I have a table with image data type column. I would like to store photos (images in .jpg format) in the table. I am using ADODC to connect VB.NET with MS-SQL server 2000.
I have two tables Encounter & Encounter_History. They have same columns. One column is of type CLOB. My requirement is to retrieve all the distinct records from both the tables with order by a date column. But problem is, UNION does not work in case of CLOB data type.
I know it will work if I use UNION ALL, but it returns duplicate records.
Please give me suggestion, how to solve this problem.
For example: The following query does not work since column1 is a CLOB data type
select column1 from table1 union select column1 from table2
Hello, I am wondering how it is going to work using SQL Server configuration type to store connection string in the SQL Server table. How does SSIS know what database to connect to if its connection string is store in the database? Thanks
Matt writes "Greetings! Warning, I'm a rookie. I wrote a stored procedure to pull data in order to do a nightly export/import from one system to another. I have a batch file that looks like this:
Sometimes, the file works and I get perfectly formed data, with everything just as I've requested (mostly basic demographic information: names, addresses, etc.).
But, other times the output file contains nothing but garbage characters, like this:
The file size looks right, but it contains nothing but characters like this from beginning to end. I can find no pattern as to why/when good data gets pulled versus the corrupt data. I can run the batch file one minute and get good data, and run it the next minute and it's all corrupt. We have the batch file scheduled late at night when no users are online, and I get the same results -- one day it works, the next it doesn't.
Forgive me if this is a well-documented issue -- my searches so far haven't turned up a thing!
Thanks much for any advice you can provide!!

I am writing a package that will process delimited flat files that will come in one of a few different versions. Within each flat file, the number of delimited columns will be the same, but each version of the file has a different number of columns. I have tried configuring the flat file data source to expect the version with the largest number of columns, but it will then throw away rows that have less than this number of columns (warning: There is a partial row at the end of the file).
Is it possible to use a single flat file data source that will work with all of the different width files?
I had a strange problem today with one of the identity fields in a frequently used table. It appears that the Identity column for a table had stopped incrementing after it reached 2147483585. Since I had inherited this table, I am not sure if the identity column type has been modified from int to numeric, but the current type is Numeric (9) which is 19 precision and 0 scale value.
When resetting the seed to 1, it started working. I tried creating a temp table with numeric value and it increments well beyond billions with no problems.
Has anyone encountered this? Any best practices around defining Identity data type (ie. use int or bigint and avoide Numeric)? Thanks NS
I have a SSIS package with a Data Flow task. This task transfers the data from SQL Server 2000 to a table in SQL Server 2005.
I deployed and tested this package on the Test Server. Then put this package in a job and executed it - Works fine.
On the production server- If I execute the package through DTEXECUI, it works fine. But when I try executing it through a job- the job fails and it gives me following error:
Description: The external metadata column collection is out of synchronization with the data source columns. The "external metadata column "T_FieldName" (82)" needs to be removed from the external metadata column collection....
What I don't understand is, why are there no errors displayed when I execute the package through DTEXECUI.
I am using execute sql task to run a stored procedure in oracle database which returns a resultset. This works. Now I need to send the ouput to a destination table in a sql database. Should I use for each loop to pick the resultset and insert it into the destination one by one (which I dont think is a great idea) or is there a better way to accomplish this task (in data flow task) ?
When I use dataflow task instead of execute sql task, the main issue is I am not able to see the output columns when I execute an oracle stored procedure, but when I see the preview I can see the resultset . But I can see the output columns for a sql server stored procedure.
My situation is that Excel files are to be downloaded into a SQL Server 2005 table (perhaps as type image or nvarchar), which serves as a document repository. From there, they should be converted to XML. Use of an NT file directory is strongly discouraged. I would like to have SSIS read the Excel from one field in a table and then write the XML into another field in the same (or perhaps another) table. Is this possible? If not, is the a strait-forward way to do this?
Also, I€™m hoping to invoke the SSIS script from a SQL Server INSERT trigger so the conversion is done during the INSERT.
Can some one tell me in basic terms the difference between a signed and unsigned integer? When would you decided to use one over the other? I'm looking for it more in layman terms than a technical bit level discussion.
