XP Home -LAN Remote Access - Unable To Connect From One Single Computer.
Jan 5, 2007
Hi,
I have Windows XP Home Workgroup LAN.
I am treating one of the XP Home system as 'Server' and installed SQL Express 2005 SP1. Enabled remote connections access.
I have total 4 XP Home systems, out of which one i am treating as Server, from the rest 3 computers, 2 are successfully connected to the Server and able to access SQL Express without any problems. But the 3rd system is unable to communicate with the Server. I disabled all firewalls in this 3rd system but still unable to connect to the server. I am able to ping the server, browse for shared folders on the server. Except SQL Express remote connection, everything else in the network is accessible from this 3rd computer.
Can anyone help me on how to troubleshoot this 3rd computer sql express connection problem to the server.
I don't have any error message to provide here. It just says, unable to connect to sql server, verify username/password etc.
Is there any limitation on SQL Express remote connections ?

Hello all,
New forum member here, and pretty new to SQL Server. My question is I'm having an impossible time trying to connect MS Access on Computer A to a database running on SQL Server 2k (SP3) on Computer B. Every time I try to create a new ODBC connection on Computer A, I get the dreaded Server Error 17 (SQL Server does not exist or access denied). I have no problems making the ODBC connection on the computer running SQL Server (Computer B).
My connection settings are as follows:
Computer A name = MAINDESKTOP
Computer B name (contains SQL Server) = HOMELAPTOP
Workgroup name = WORKGROUP
Server Properties:
Name = HOMELAPTOP
Authentication = SQL Server and Windows
Registered SQL Server Properties = Use SQL Server authentication, and I'm using a login name and password
Server Network Utility = TCP/IP network protocol enabled, with default port 1433
Server Client Network Utility = TCP/IP network, default port 1433
Under "Security", I have created a new login using SQL Server Authentication called "bradley", and have assigned a password to the new login. I've noticed that when I open the login properties dialogue, there are always more ***'s in the password field than the number of characters I originally used, but I suspect that's normal. I have assigned a database called "Costume" to "bradley", and have verified that the permission is checked on the Database Access tab for user "bradley".
Under "DatabasesCostume", I have verified that there is a user called "bradley" with the same login name and user name.
No matter what I try, I can't get Computer A to connect to Computer B's SQL Server database. I have no problems with any other types of connections (pinging, internet, file transfers).
This can't be that difficult! Any ideas?
Thank you!
Brad

Please bare with me as I do not have much knowledge in this area with MSSQL.
I have installed MSSQL 2000 Developer and I have setup a database which I am able to connect to and work fine with from the actual server MSSQL is installed on.
The problem comes in when i try to connect to that same database from a different remote server. It will not connect to the DB from this remote server but I know all the connection information is correct so its something on the MSSQL DB server causing this and not on this remote server.
Someone I know has had this problem and has fixed it but they wont tell me how. All I know is they said something about manually opening the ports on the MSSQL server and he also said when you set it to dynamicly determine the port that MSSQL is listening on it errored out. however if you set it staticly to 1433 it worked fine.
Ive also installed SP4 in attempt to fix this but no luck with that either. And I can also get the same exact remote server to connect to completely different DB server without issues.
If anyone can please help walk me through this I would be greatly appreciate and I am also willing to pay some money if it will make my life easier.

I thought I would post how I got remote t-sql debugging working in my environment. Hope it might help someone.
I have two domains, DomainA and DomainB. DomainB has a one way external trust to DomainA. Dev Vista machine running VS 2005 is in DomainA logged in as user DomainAauser. SQL 2005 running on test Windows Server 2003 DC machine in DomainB under user DomainBuser. When trying to 'step into stored procedure' in VS, whether my data connection used windows authentication or sql server authentication, I would get the 'Unable to start T-SQL degbuggin...'. I could debug t-sql when I logged into the domain controller (console or rdp) and running VS on the server. I changed the SQL Server service to run under the DomainAauser account and I can now remote t-sql debug using both window authentication and sql server authentication. Hope this may help anyone that might run into this.

RMcc

I'm green on this networking stuff so any help is greatly appreciated.
I have setup my home computer as a server and assigned a static IP to it. I installed SQL Server 2005 Developer and allowed remote connections to it through the Surface Area Config tool, added port 1433 TCP and 1434 UDP to firewall's exception list, and started the SQL Server Browser service.
Now I can't seem to remote connect to this SQL Server from my office network. Is there something I'm doing wrong here?
Thanks!!

I'm attempting to connect to an SQL Server Express database from a remote PC, but it isn't connecting. I have a user account created in the database, and I'm using the SQL authentication with that user account. I have success with this if I'm on the server that the database is on, but not remotely. Both are on the same network, even plugged into the same hub. There doesn't appear to be any network problems.
Any ideas? Thanks!

Hello
I am able to connect to the server and most of the time I can't connect.
It is important to be able to connect so I can manage my mdf - database.
To test ... I disable the firework but I still can't connect 90% of the time.
Thank you in advance.

Server Error in '/Dive' Application.
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)
this is the error message I found when I run my asp.net application and the connection string as follows:
<add key="ConnectionInfo" value="Server=(local);Database=Dive;Trusted_Connection=yes;" />
can someone tell me how to connect and how to specify username and password in Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Edition..........
I'm a little bit new on VWD 2005 I need an assistance on it.

My VS 2005 website project was connecting to a remote SQL Server. But after I move the database to the second SQL Server, I got the following error message from running my website project:
Named Pipes Provider: Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.
I do everything same like what I did in the first SQL server:
Using “SQL Server and Windows authentication and “System account;
Create a domain account IIS_WPG;
Grant this IIS_WPG as db_owner for the database;
In web.config, add the name and password to the end of connectionstring;
Make sure the SQL Server has “Named Pipes and “TCP/IP protocols.
I have no idea what I can do else, anybody has suggestions?

Greetings:
We have a copy of SQL2k Report Services running on a Windows 2003 Server. But the database used by the Reports is actually on another box in our network. (This is a option you can use during install.) This setup worked fine for about a year but now neither the reports and ReportManager no longer run. The Reporting services Log error is:
System.Net.WebException: The underlying connection was closed: Unable to connect to the remote server.
In a browser we get the error:
---
"Directory Listing Denied"
"This Virtual Directory does not allow contents to be listed."
---
Turning on the option to list directory contents in IIS does not resolve the issue.
Anyone seen this creep up before? I am unaware of any changes to the machine's security in the last few weeks but something has obviously changed.
I can ping the remote servers where the DB's are stored.
I am using Windows Integrated Authentication.
I have a dev box with a similar configuration, except everything is hosted locally, and it runs fine.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

Es kann keine Verbindung mit 'RD2MWD000349' hergestellt werden.

Has anybody had that problem before? Happens right after installation, no customisation of the SQL Server has been done yet. And I run the server on localhost.......

We have a problem to connect to a specific database on our local network from a specific Vista machine. Several other XP and Vista machines are able to connect to the database without any problem. However, with the two latest Vista machines we received, it is impossible to connect to the database. In Microsoft SQL server Management studio express, we have the error 26 "error locating server/instance specified". We are sure the server name we entered is correct. We suppose the server is correctly configured as we are able to connect from other computers. From the machines that are not able to connect to the database, we can connect without problem to other databases. We also see the server, where the database is, on the network servers list in Microsoft SQL server Management studio. .
The version of the components are:
Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express 9.00.3042.00
Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 6.0.6000.16386 (vista_rtm.061101-2205)
Microsoft MSXML 3.0 4.0 6.0
Microsoft Internet Explorer 7.0.6000.16575
Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0.50727.312
Operating System 6.0.6000
We verified we have the same version of components on the Vista machine from which the connection is successful.
The network database has the version 8.0.
We are usinng sql server authentification method.
We try to specify the IP address instead of the server name in the connection string. We also tried to specify the port.
We also tried to disable the firewall.
Unfortunatetly, we are not able to connect to this database. Any suggestion ?

I've recently got a new webhosting account with hostinguk who have do the following:
We have created a SQL 2005 database for you named: DBCOX10289
and a system DSN named: DBCOX10289
To access your database you will need Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio / Express
If you do not have a copy of this you can download Microsoft SQL Server management Studio Express at the following location:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/sql/default.aspx
In enterprise manager you should register the server: sql5.hostinguk.net
You will need to use the following login name and password when registering the server and accessing your database.
SQL 2005 username: COX10289
SQL 2005 password: password
To use this server within your web site code please ensure that you refer to the server as sql5.hostinguk.net
PLEASE NOTE: Do NOT use the IP address of this server directly as this will cause problems for you should we make network changes at any point in time.
I have tried and am in despair but still am unable to connect to the server. Running a XP machine In Administrative tools ODBC I have created a DSN called DBCOX10289 with the server name sql.hostinguk.net. upon completing the ODBC setup I get this:
Microsoft SQL Native Client Version 09.00.3042
Data Source Name: DBCOX10289
Data Source Description: Keystages
Server: sql5.hostinguk.net
Use Integrated Security: No
Database: (Default)
Language: (Default)
Data Encryption: No
Trust Server Certificate: No
Multiple Active Result Sets(MARS): No
Translate Character Data: Yes
Log Long Running Queries: No
Log Driver Statistics: No
Use Regional Settings: No
Use ANSI Quoted Identifiers: Yes
Use ANSI Null, Paddings and Warnings: Yes
I then click on test connection and get
Microsoft SQL Native Client Version 09.00.3042
Running connectivity tests...
Attempting connection
Connection established
Verifying option settings
Disconnecting from server
TESTS COMPLETED SUCCESSFULLY!
Whne I'm scrolling through the options in ODBC it can see all the other databases on the server.
When I then try register the server in SQL server management studio express
Servername: sql5.hostinguk.net
Authentication: SQL Server Authentication
Username: COX10289
Password : password

Testing the registered server failed. Verify the server name, login credentials, and database, and then click Test again.

I try this servername as well: sql5.hostinguk.netDBCOX10289 and still get

An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) (.Net SqlClient Data Provider)
I can ping the servername and get the IP address
I can telnet the server and port 1433 and connect successfully
The hosting company do not support sql 2005 express
I have tried researching this as much as possible, all to no avail. What can
I do?

Hi,
I€™m using a Script Component in SSIS to call a Web Service. The web service is wrapped, using the wsdl tool. The package works, on my local enviroment. Script component calls the web service and returns the data. I€™ll move the web service to another server, web service as Anonymous access is enable. Deployed the Package on a SQL server. But, when excuting the package I get the below error. I can view and invoke the web method and see data even. SSIS is running under a NT AUTHORITYNetworkService account. I know that the problem is permission, but how would I resolve the issue.

SQL Express running on Server 2003 SP1, not a domain controller - but prior to installing SQL Express, I did dcpromo promote and then demoted it back to a workgroup server.
Connecting with Vista build 5600, Studio express 9.00.2047 with MDAC 6.00.5600.1638. Server 2003 MDAC is 2.82.1830.
I came across this article on the net:
http://www.developersdex.com/sql/message.asp?p=1867&ID=%3C309C7496-F36B-4398-9C52-322E6CB8DE3B%40microsoft.com%3E
Is my mis-matched versions of MDAC causing me this grief?
Otherwise, I have remote set up for TCP and Named Pipes, I've run sp_configure 'remote admin connections', 1; my login is set to SQL Authentication with everything granted. I've tried running the service as network, local and MachineAdministrator; ports are open per:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555585
I wanted to ask before I start replacing the MDAC on either the Vista or Server 2003 machine... If that's the problem, which version(s) do I change? to?
Full error message:
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. While connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be cuased by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connecitons, (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 1326)
Thanks, John

Hello Everyone,
I have a Report Server setup on my laptop (XP Pro SP2). I have developed a report which I would like to view from a Windows Forms Application (VB.NET) using a ReportViewer. When I try it from the local machine it works correctly, but if I try to connect and preview the same report from my other PC (Vista Home Premium) I am getting the "Unable to connect to the remote server. A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because the connected host failed to respond." error.
I have setup the Processing mode to Remote and correctly setup the ReportPath and ReportServerUrl using:
With rptRetEmp
.ProcessingMode = Microsoft.Reporting.WinForms.ProcessingMode.Remote
.ServerReport.ReportServerUrl = New Uri("http://192.168.1.2/CPMReports")
.ServerReport.ReportPath = "/CPM_Reports/Test"
.ServerReport.Refresh()
.RefreshReport()
End With
Where CPMReports is the Report Server virtual directory and CPM_Reports is the folder where the report Test resides.
I do not know if this has anything to do with the fact that Vista Home does not have Report Services enabled or it is just a permissions problem. I have red several posts that describe similiar problems, but I could not find a solution.
Thank you for your help.
Daniel D.

Hi all,
I encounter a problem of unable to access Remote Server after i placed my web application into the web server.
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it.)
So I googled and tried lot of different ways of connecting.By piped name, IP, trying instance which that server don't even have one :X.I also tried typing in cmd > telnet localhost 1433It appeared that the telnet fail, i tried it on other machine, it works. So is it cause by denied of access through that port?I checked at the sql client network, it show 1433, i check the server too, it show 1433.I also checked if there's any firewall, it appear there is no firewall at all.The sql server i trying to connect is SQL 2000, it run by Windows Server 2003
Any advise or more information you needed to help me solve this problem?Thanks

Environment: SQL Server 2014 on Windows Server 2012 R2.
We have our availability group configured and working. However, when we try to connect to the AG listener from a remote server, we have to use the fully qualified domain name (FQDN) to connect. We'd like to be able to connect just using the host name. Interestingly, ping actually resolves the IP correctly for either.

The reason I had to start a new thread was that the old thread seems to be closed. There is no "Reply" button showing.
I still have the same problem. The last post asked if I was sure I was using SQLExpress.
I only have SQLEXPress and I have never had anything else. Therefore the question becomes - Why does the system seem to think I have another version?

My target market includes Micro-SMEs (i.e. 1 to 2 person business). This users often have multiple computers, but tend to run XP Home edition. Hence I need to set up a SQL Server Express on one of the machines and allow the other machines to access it.
So far I realise:
XP machines must be SP2ed (http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=379560&SiteID=1)
XP Home machines need to be in the same work group (am I right?)
I have to Open up the MS Firewall on each of the machines for TCP ports 1433 and 1434 (see http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=511441&SiteID=1)
On the machine hosting the SQL Server Express instance, start the "Browser" Service (again http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=511441&SiteID=1)
I have several questions surrounding this.....
If I package SQL Express with my application is there away I can get the Browser to be started automatically? Do I need to write some custom code using the Microsoft.SqlServer.Management namespace?
My understanding of the SQL Server security model is that ideally I should ideally use Windows Authenticated users connections - how do I set up the remote XP Home user on the XP Home machine which is hosting the SQL Server Instance? I'm thing I may have to used Mixed Mode and pass the SQL Server username and password in the connection string. Am I right or can I use Windows Authenticated?
Are there any more resources other than http://msdn.microsoft.com/sql/express/default.aspx?pull=/library/en-us/dnsse/html/emsqlexcustapp.asp which I should look at for help on installing an app bound to SQL Server Express?
Thanks in advance

I have tried to install SQL Server 2005 Express several times with no success. I have followed the instructions to remove all SQL files on the Programs menu.
Then, when I attempt to install it again, it only goes as far as the database where it stops and gives the error message:
SQL Server cannot write system databases to C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLData because it contains files from a previous installation. To continue, move the databases from the specified folder, or specify a different installation folder. Then run SQL Server Setup again.
It doesn't give options and I can only abort the installation.
Does anyone have a remedy for a technologically challenged person?
Thank you.

Hi All,
I created SP and enabled db_datareader and db_datawriter for roles for BUILTINUsers on database level.
I can call that SP from my application if I am accessing DB from my app running on the same machine. If I run app on other machine SP throw exception related to lack of permission.
I fixed that by enabling db_owner roles for BUILTINUsers. But it is not good fix from security point of view.
My question is: is there any other way to allow regular user to run that SP by not giving him db_owner privileges?
Also I have to mention that my SP procedure has some dynamic SQL code.
I would greatly appreciate any help,
Thanks,
Roman
