Jun 29, 2006I am getting the following error message when I tried installing the 2005 Developer Edition from the MSDN kit. I previously installed the 2005 Express Edition, and it worked just fine, so I thought that the install failed as it was at a lower version than the Express Edition. I uninstalled the SQLExpress Edition, however, when I try to install SQL Server 2005 again, I get the following message:

I have also installed Visual Studio NET, and I wonder if some component in the Studio app is holding back the SQL Server install. I have uninstalled all SQL components several times already, and I keep on getting this message.

SQL 2000 SP4 To SQL 2005 Upgrade Blocked.
Feb 15, 2007I am upgrading a sql server 2000 with sp4 (I have double and triple checked the sp) on a windows 2003 sp1 server and I keep getting the following error:

I cannot find anything saying that I need any other service pack other than sp4 for sql serer 2000. Any one ever run into this or have a clue what might be causing the installer to think I have the wrong service pack?

I have three servers running SQL Server 2000. Two are running Windows Server 2000 SP4 with SQL 2000/SP4 and one Windows Server 2003 with SQL 2000/SP?(probably not 4). I copied the installation DVD to a network drive and successfully performed an in-place upgrade of the Windows Server 2003 machine. However, when I try to upgrade either of the other servers, I get an error indicating that I have a service pack problem.
Reason: Your upgrade is blocked. For more information about upgrade support, see the "Version and Edition Upgrades" and "Hardware and Software Requirements" topics in SQL Server 2005 Setup Help or SQL Server 2005 Books Online.

Of course, the error doesn't indicate what the service pack problem actually is. My SQL 2005 media was probably released before SP4 was released because the Setup Help indicates that you can directly upgrade from SP3, but makes no mention of SP4. I can't imagine there are any migration problems with it since I can't find any reference to it as a problem on any SQL Server sites... So... I'm left wondering what my problem really is... :confused:
Any help would be appreciated.
Sql Server 2000 Upgrade To 2005 Blocked
Mar 4, 2008I've inherited 6 sql server 2000 boxes. I've upgrade 3 with no trouble. now I have one that gives the message :
"your upgrade is blocked because of cross-language compatibility rules.
For more information about cross-language support, see the version..."
all servers are 2003, sp2. All SQL is Enterprise edition, default language is "english". even the collation order is
the same. why the cross language message? Any help would be good else I'll be forced to rebuild the DB and load application again. ugly!!

I am having a problem when trying to add the Client Components to an existing installation of SQL 2005 Standard Edition SP1 running on Windows 2003 Standard. The server was originally built with SQL 2005 Standard Edition and had SP1 installed at a later date. I am using the CD that SQL was originally installed with which is not a service packed copy of SQL. The reason given when clicking the details button is as follows:

Setup And Upgrade :: Installation Of Express 2014 Blocked By Framework 4.0?
Sep 17, 2015I have a very strange problem when I try to install SQL Express 2014 on 1 PC on my network.
The setup is blocking on the step "rules of functionnality" (I hope it is the good translation ...).
I ha ve a message that indicates that there is a problem the following checking : "It exists a Internet connection with the download center for Microsoft Framework 4.0". At the beginning I had Framework 3.5 and 4.5 installed on the PC.
When I tried to install manually Framework 4.0 I had a message that indicated that the setup was not possible because there was a Superior version. So I uninstall v4.5 and install v4.0 normally.
I run again SQL 2014 Express setup but I have always the same error. I take a look on Internet to look for the same problem but I found nothing.

We were upgraded our databases from 6.5 to 7.0 .After upgrading
the Compatibility level was 65 .We changed to 70 for all databases using sp_dbcmptlevel system stored proc.We were having some problems with Ansi nulls if the compatablity level is 70,We changed back to 65 that works fine--OK with ANSI NULLS.While Upgading ANSI NULLS OFF after upgrading ANSI NULLS OFF.But from the front end side ODBC settings ANSI NULLS are ON.Is that some thing to do with compatablity level or with ANSI NULLS .
If you guys have any great ideas Please let me know.

Does In-place Upgrade Set Compatibility Level To 9.0
Jun 19, 2007This may be very obvious and when I get to the first test server I will find out, but I only have a new installation of SQL2K5 so far to test with. I have several databases that need to be upgraded to run on 2K5, but the application requires them to run in 8.0 compatibility. Does this mean that an in-place upgrade is not an option?
I apologize if this is a silly question, but I have not yet found the answer specifically.

SQL 2005 Upgrade With Compatibility Level 80

We have upgraded our database from SQL 2000 to SQL 2005 keeping the compatibility level 80.
Now the question is -
Would microsoft support compatibility level 80 in SQL Server 2005 even after the extended support date for SQL Server 2000?
OR
If Microsoft dropped the support for SQL 2000, then would Microsoft support compatibility level 80 in SQL Server 2005?

SQL 2012 :: Upgrade Compatibility Mode And Rollback Process?
Mar 24, 2014We upgraded QA and production to sql server 2012 last year ( in place) leaving the user databases at sql 2005 ( 90 ). A few months ago the QA user databases were set to sql 2012 compatibility mode. Management is worried about upgrading production and wants to know if we can quickly roll back.
I want to confirm that we can roll back using the same command, and if dbcc freeproccache can be used to avoid having to update all statistics.
ALTER DATABASE <mydatabase> SET COMPATIBILITY_LEVEL = 110
ALTER DATABASE <mydatabase> SET COMPATIBILITY_LEVEL = 90
This works fine in QA on my own test user database. No errors.
Backward Compatibility Upgrade Failed On Service Pack 1 For SQL Server 2005

Blocked Process
Mar 17, 1999We are using SQL server 6.5 and currently have about 100 users connections at a given
point in time. The application is Visual Basic 5.0 based and it allows users to create
MS Word documents from the application. These documents names are stored in a table which basically
acts as a reference table. Every time a document needs to be attached to a record
this table is called with an insert/update query. This results in an exclusive page/table
lock and ends up into a blocked process. This finally results into a major halt for
all the system users.
Manual killing of these blocked processes frees up the resources and brings things back to normal
although disruptive to the users.
Any clue as to why the blocked processes are not able to free themsevles up ?
Are we missing something in our SQL configuration that will help us with unblocking
these processes ?

Can anyone explain? I am the only user connected to the db at the time, no jobs are executing.

Blocked By SPID -1?????
Oct 6, 1998What is SPID -1? I see nothing listing it in any activity monitor, but it has just recently started blocking some processes.

Still Getting Blocked Despite WITH (NOLOCK)
Apr 5, 2006I'm running a heavy SELECT query using WITH (NOLOCK). This still causes other processes trying to INSERT in one of the tables to get blocked.
I thought the locking hint would prevent from blocking other processes?
Mirroring Blocked And DB Got Down!!!

I have an SQL Server 2005 mirroring config with "High availability". Twice over the past four weeks, the principal server started logging to the event log:
"All schedulers on Node 0 appear deadlocked due to a large number of worker threads waiting on DBMIRROR_DBM_EVENT" I checked the database activity monitor and indeed there were lots of processes in DBMIRROR_DBM_EVENT.
The database was totally unresponsive to queries (all got timeouts), and no failover was done.
This are the log entries for all day:

I restarted the database and everything came to normal.
As you can imagine, the problem is really serious.
Should I forget about mirroring? Anyone has experienced something similar?

Is there a way to create a rule specific to a user such that he can only SELECT from a table where a field equals a specific value.
In other words user Joe types in: SELECT * FROM SALES_BY_LOCATION. Because Joe's territory is Los Angeles, I want a rule that only retrieves sales data from Los Angeles.

Oct 6, 2004Not long ago I accountered this situation: I had two databases on "MS SQL Server". In one of the databases there was a nomenclature with very large primary key.
I had to transport that nomenclature and transform the wide PK into single identity column into the other database.
I decided to use a function for that transformation. BUT that function had to mark somewhere which combination of the PK columns is relative to which identity value. BUT functions CAN'T WRITE under MSSQL.
So I took the challenge and mine all sources of information. The result was a function "Exec4Fun" that breaks the rule.
I suppose that with this function it's possible to avoid the restriction for triggers, which prevents writing in the triggering table? (not tested yet)
If someone needs such tools, just write back your e-mail and I'll send some code.

it uses SERIALIZABLE Option. procs look something like below..

For some reason when i call the proc with below parameters to get next sequence number.. its hungs up..

exec spGetNextSequence 19, 'LotSequence', @NextSequenceValue output, Null
select @NextSequenceValue as NextSequenceValue
When i queried sp_who2 it shows that my processid is blocked by some other processid.. and when i do DBCC INPUTBUFFER (blockingprocessid), the query of blocking processid and my nextsequence generation stored proc is not realted at all..
Can you help shed some light on why my nextsequence generating proc is getting hunged...?

Killing A Blocked Process
Jul 21, 1999If I kill a blocked process, why does the current activity window still show the process? Both processes, blocking and blocked, are scheduled tasks. Also, the blocked process is still listed as a running task in the manage scheduled task window.

Connection Blocked By Process -2

I have a fairly complex application running which has numerous connections on various threads accessing my sql 2005 database.
Every now and then I find that one of my connections is being blocked by process with a pid of -2.
I assume this is some system process.
The only way I can get my application going again is to restart the sql server.
Can someone tell me what process -2 is?

Sep 25, 2006HiShortly, I keep invoices in a table.Occasionally, someone will fire the execution of a stored procedure(SP) that performs several UPDATEs against (potentially) all invoicesOLDER than a date that is supplied to the SP as a parameter.The SP is usually a lengthy process (it takes at least 30 mins).The problem is that SQL server 2000 Dev Edition doesn't allow me toinsert new invoices that are "younger", while the SP is executing.How should I specify to SQL Server that new invoices are "harmless"?Thanks.
