Splitting SQL Server Date/Time Column Into Access Date Column And Access Time Column

Jan 24, 2008

I have an SSIS package that moves data from SQL Server to an legacy Access database. In SQL Server, there is a date/time column that I need to split into a separate date column and time column in the access database. Initially I just created a derrived column for the time and set the expression equal to the source date/time column from SQL Server. Unfortunately, that just makes the date column and time column the same having the full date/time.

What expression can I use during a derrived column transformation to assign just the date to a derrived column and just the time to another derrived column?

Thanks,

Steve

Data Access :: Insert Rows To MS Access 2013 Without Listing Column Names

Nov 12, 2015

We need to insert data/rows from a SQL Server 2014 database into MS Access database.  The problem is, there are so many columns (100+) in the table and there are so many insert transactions of this kind (from different tables) that it is not very easy to write the code in VB.NET that lists all column names.

Both the Access and SQL Server tables have the same number of columns and the equivalent data types, so inserting is not really the problem.  It's just that is there a way to do an insert statement in T-SQL that does not name all the columns?

ALTER TABLE DROP COLUMN LastUpdated Failed Because One Or More Objects Access This Column.

Mar 7, 2008

Hi I’m trying to alter a table and delete a column I get the following error. The object 'DF__Morningst__LastU__19EB91BA' is dependent on column 'LastUpdated'.
ALTER TABLE DROP COLUMN LastUpdated failed because one or more objects access this column. I tried deleting the concerned constraint. But the next time I get the same error with a different constraint name. I want to find out if I can dynamically check the constraint name and delete it and then drop the column. Can anyone help.IF EXISTS(SELECT 1FROM sysobjects,syscolumnsWHERE sysobjects.id = syscolumns.idAND sysobjects.name = TablenameAND syscolumns.name = column name)BEGIN EXECUTE ('ALTER TABLE tablename DROP CONSTRAINT DF__SecurityM__DsegL__08C105B8')EXECUTE ('ALTER TABLE tablenameDrop column columnname)ENDGO

Access To TEXT Column

Sep 22, 2006

Hi,

I have a table with a TEXT column and this column contains an XML document. I'm developing a TSQL stored procedure which reads the content of this column and accesses the values in the XML elements but I have a lot of problems...

1) How can I read the text column and store the value in a variable? I tried

declare @a varchar(2048)
set @a = (SELECT TEXT_COLUMN FROM MY_TABLE)

but it returns

Server: Msg 279, Level 16, State 3, Line 2
The text, ntext, and image data types are invalid in this subquery or aggregate expression.

I tried also with the READTEXT function but I just can't find how to store data read in a variable...

2) which length should I use for the VARCHAR variable which will store the data? Is it possible not to specify a length with SQL Server 7 or 2000?

Thanks!

Andrea

Dynamically Access A Column In A Table

May 21, 1999

I'm trying to create a procedure that can access a column in a table dynamically.<br>
Lets say I have the following table<br>
create table table_items<br>
(rec int identity not null,<br>
item1 int,<br>
item2 int,<br>
item3 int)<br>

and I have a procedure as such

create procedure access_item<br>
@rec int,<br>
@itemindex int,<br>
@item int as<br>
select @item = (select item1 from table_items where rec = @rec)<br>

However, the column I want to access is @itemindex.<br>
If @itemindex = 1, then set @item to item1<br>
if @itemindex = 2, then set @item to item2<br>
if @itemindex = 3, then set @item to item3<br>

I can't use a simple 'if/then' selection, because the number of columns in the table can grow, and I don't want to have to rewrite the procedure everytime a column is added.<br>
How do I do this?<br>

I tried to use an execute command, as such<br>

create procedure access_item_2<br>
@rec int,<br>
@itemindex int,<br>
@item int as<br>
declare @sql varchar(255)<br>
select @sql = "select @item = (select item" + convert(varchar(2), itemindex) + " from table_items where rec = @rec)"<br>
execute (@sql)<br>

but when the procedure runs, I get the following error:<br>
'@item is not a valid variable.'<br>

What else can I do?<br>

Column-order An Access Speed?

Jun 15, 2006

Is there any truth to this: the placement of fields in a table relates to field access speed. So, frequently accessed fields should be placed in the beginning of the table while fields infrequently used can be placed toward the end.

Adding Up Column Values (asp && Access 2000)

Nov 30, 2006

HiI've got a quandry - I have a detailed database that handles advertorders between a design agency and printers / magazines etc.I want to add up the total spent by the client and put the results to afield.I've actually done that using a query table in access - it should bequite simple as i can bind the 'total amount' to my table - the onlything it does not currently do is filter the total based on the monthselected.For example if you look athttp://www.daneverton.com/dg2data/months/2006-12.aspThe data here is filtered by the issue equaling Dec-2006The actual order total is £13,622 but the column is showing the totalfor all entries to date (a years worth = £ 422,048)I'm sure that there is only a basic tweak required but i'm banging myhead over what to doThe sql is "SELECT * FROM monnodraught, q_monodraught_total WHERE[Issue / Edition] LIKE ? ORDER BY Publication ASC"Any help gladly received.

Data Access :: How To Get Column Datatype Using Namespace

Jan 2, 2013

which is to parse a create table script using Microsoft.SqlServer.TransactSql.ScriptDom namespace..I get a list of statements : StatementList SQLStatement = parser.ParseStatementList(StreamReader, out errors);then I cast a relevant statement to the CreateTableStatement type which gives me access to the ColumnDefinition class.

foreach (TSqlStatement T in SQLStatement.Statements)
{ if (T is CreateTableStatement) { CreateTableStatement  TC= (CreateTableStatement)T}}
with foreach (ColumnDefinition CD in TC.Definition.ColumnDefinitions)

I am ready to loop through the columns so far so good. I can get to the column name using CD.ColumnIdetifier.Value, to the data type using CD.DataType.Name.BaseIdentifier.Value, but can't seem to get to the length definition. Meaning, I can get column1 , varchar; but I need column1, varchar(40). where do I get (40) from?I tried using ScriptTokenStream under C.DataType, but it seems to iterate through all tokens not just ones relevant to that fragment.

Multi Column Primary Key's In Access Using ADOX [c#]

Jan 15, 2008

Hi all,

I have been pulling my hair trying to figure out what the guys at microsoft were thinking when creating the ADOX library. I have an access table that is syncronized with a SQL server. The table has a primary key with two columns [User] and [Program]. The SQL Server has both columns in as the primary key columns and I have a syncronization mechanism that is responsible for several things, one of which is to recreate the Access data structure. All works well for all tables except this one. I have tried to create the multi-column key in several ways, none that worked. Let me show you what I am doing:

CatalogClass catDCDLocal;

Column c;

catDCDLocal = new CatalogClass();

catDCDLocal.let_ActiveConnection(dbAccess.buildConnectionString(Settings.CattDCDLocalPath, Settings.SecurityDBPath, s.UserID, s.Password));

foreach (Table tbl in catDCDLocal.Tables) {
if (tbl.Name == "Users") {

/* This is retarded so need to clean up... Users table has a primary key consisting of 2 columns */

for (int i = tbl.Keys.Count - 1; i >= 0; i--) { //remove the keys

tbl.Keys.Delete(i);

}

for (int i = tbl.Indexes.Count - 1; i >= 0; i--) { //remove the indexes

tbl.Indexes.Delete(i);

}

tbl.Keys.Append("PrimaryKey", KeyTypeEnum.adKeyUnique, "User", "", "");
tbl.Keys[0].Columns.Append("Program", DataTypeEnum.adWChar, 6);

}
}

I have also tried:

tbl.Keys.Append("PrimaryKey", KeyTypeEnum.adKeyUnique, "User", "", "");

//tbl.Keys[0].Columns.Append("Program", DataTypeEnum.adWChar, 6);

Key k = tbl.Keys[0];

Column col = tbl.Columns["Program"];

//col.ParentCatalog = catDCDLocal;

k.Columns.Append(col, DataTypeEnum.adWChar, 6);

Nothing works for me ;-(

IDENTITY Column In SQL 2000 And Linked Tables In MS Access

Nov 30, 2006

Please help

We have an application written in MS Access. The tables are linked to a SQL 2000 database.
The problem is that sometimes insert a new record in a table freezes and times out after a while without anything has happened.
When installing the application the *mdb file is copied over to the C drive and an ODBC connection is written to the registry.
The application is used by many in the company.
We have problems on tables defined with IDENTITY columns. Can this be our problem and how can we solve it?

How To Access Output Column Length Within Script Component?

Mar 7, 2007

My script component defines a (DT_WSTR, 450) output column named keyword. How can I access its length within the script, instead of hard-coding 450 as a constant?

My feeble attempts to tease this out through Visual Studio got me this far:

Output0Buffer.keyword.GetType.GetProperty("Length").GetValue(

but now I'm stuck. Also, if it matters, this is an asynchronous transformation component.

Data Access :: Server Rejected The Connection - Access To Selected Database Has Been Denied

I have recently upgraded to SQL2014 on Win2012. The Access front end program works fine.

But, previously created Excel reports with built in MS Queries now fail with the above error for users with MS 2013.  The queries still work for users still using MS 2007.

I also cannot create any new queries and get the same error message. If I log on as myself on the domain to another PC with 2007 installed it works fine, so I don't think it is anything to do with AD groups or permissions.

Multi-user Access Through A Data-access Layer/remoting Server

Oct 30, 2007

Hi guys,

I've been developing desktop client-server and web apps and have used Access and SQL Server Standard most of the time.
I'm looking into using SQL CE, and had a few questions that I can't seem to get a clear picture on:

- The documentation for CE says that it supports 256 simultaneous connections and offers the Isolation levels, Transactions, Locking, etc with a 4GB DB. But most people say that CE is strictly a single-user DB and should not be used as a DB Server.
Could CE be extended for use as a multi-user DB Server by creating a custom server such as a .NET Remoting Server hosted through a Windows Service (or any other custom host) on a machine whereby the CE DB would run in-process with this server on the machine which would then be accessed by multiple users from multiple machines??
Clients PCs -> Server PC hosting Remoting Service -> ADO.NET -> SQL CE

- and further more can we use Enterprise Services (Serviced Components) to connect to SQL CE and further extend this model to offer a pure high-quality DB Server?
Clients PCs -> Server PC hosting Remoting Service -> Enterprise Services -> ADO.NET -> SQL CE

Seems quite doable to me, but I may be wrong..please let me know either ways

Thanks,
CP

Access Denied Error Message Using Xp_cmdshell To Access Network Share

Jan 14, 2007

When running the following statement in SQL 2005, I get the error message "Access is denied":

exec master.dbo.xp_cmdshell 'TYPE \SERVER-BSHAREFILE.TXT'

The following are true about the network:

The SQL Server is installed on SERVER-A.
SERVER-A and SERVER-B are Windows 2003 servers on the same Windows 2003 domain.
The SQL Server and SQL Server Agent services are running under the domain account SQLSERVICE.
SQLSERVICE is a member of the Domain Admins group.
The Domain Admins group is part of the local Administrators group on SERVER-B.
The SQLSERVICE account has also explicitly been given Full Control to the folder referenced by \SERVER-BSHARE
xp_cmdshell use has been enabled on the SQL Server.

If I run the following command in SQL:

exec master.dbo.xp_cmdshell 'whoami'the following is returned: DOMAINSQLSERVICE
If I change the command to access the c: drive instead of a network drive, it executes successfully.

Can anyone shed some light on why I still cannot access any of the files in this folder using xp_cmdshell?
