Ads Wizard: Failure To Open SQL Server With Given Connect String

Apr 2, 2007

Hi, sorry but I am just getting my feet wet with the ADS wizard. I have managed to get the PPC emulator running the ADS wizard and have the emulator ActiveSync connected with desktop. Port 1024 opens from the emulator to the desktop. On the ADS wiz I can connect to the device .sdf. WHen I try to connect to the desktop I am getting a connection failure in the ADS wiz log and after stepping through the code VS watch window gives the following message for the SQL exception:

Message "Failure to open SQL Server with given connect string. [ connect string =
Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=C:\Northwind.accdb; Jet OLEDBystem
Database=C:\Documents and Settings\vhaporellinr.POR-EE778886\Application Data\Microsoft\Access\system.mdw ]" string

I do not know enough to know where to go next to move past this no-doubt simple problem. Can you direct me to the appropriate docs or refs to start digging into looking for solutions?

Is there a particular Northwind.mdb file that is supposed to be used?

Are we talking some kind of permissions issues on the database?

I was assuming I did not have to install SQL Server 2005 and the SQL Server management console(?) to do development with the SSCE. Is that correct?

THank you for any helping pointers you can provide.

Failure To Open SQL Server With Given Connect String.

Oct 11, 2006

So,

I have a Server running Windows 2003, windows firewall offline, with Sql Server 2005 and SQL Server 2005 Mobile Edition. This server is running behind a firewall.

When I try to PULL data with RDA from the internal network, all work's great! But when I try it from the exterior, internet, I always receive this message: Failure to open SQL Server with given connect string. [ connect string = Provider=sqloledb;Data Source=<MY INTERNET IP>,11433;Network Library=DBMSSOCN;Initial Catalog=testdb;User Id=sqlceuser;Password=test; ]

On my firewall, I unblocked port 80 and 11433 and mapped them to my internal server IP with port 80 and 1433. I use port 11433 on internet because my ISP block the 1433.

How can I solve this problem?

Error Message: Cannot Open Database.[DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen(Connect()).] SQL Server Does Not Exist Or Access Denied.

Mar 20, 2008

I installed SQL 2005 including backward compatibility, MSDN libraries and SP2 a new Windows 2003 server (chose mixed mode authentication). Installation was successful and I then installed an off the shelf database with Windows authentication which also installed successfully.
I created a new group in AD, added the database users into the group and gave db-owner rights to the group in SQL as advised by the installation guide. However, when I try to open the database it gives an error message saying "Cannot open database.[DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen(Connect()).] SQL server does not exist or access denied". I also tested it adding an individual user (myself) as a user to no avail.
When I set up DSN in ODBC on my computer I can successfully test the connection but can't run the application. The connection is via TCP/IP.
Any suggestions?

Can't Connect To Remote Report Server Model From Report Wizard

Mar 6, 2008

Hi,

I have created and deployed a data source (which uses "Credentials supplied by the user running the report") and a model which uses this data source.
Also I have built a report using Report Builder and all works well.

Now I wish to use Visual Studio to build a report, so I'm trying to create a data source from my computer which the report should use and I want it to use the model on the remote server. In the Report Wizard I am using "Report Server Model" and the following connection string:

Server="http://<remoteserver>/reportserver";datasource="/Models/MyModel"

IHowever I can't make the credentials to work. I've tried them all with no luck. What username/password must I use? Because so far nothing of what I have tried works.

Any help is highly appretiated.

Kind Regards,
Robert

Importing Data From Oracle 8i/9i To SQL Server 2005 Using SQL Server Import And Export Wizard (AKA DTS Wizard)

Oct 20, 2006

Hi All,

I have become frustrated and I am not finding the answers I expect.

Here's the gist, we support both Oracle and SQL for our product and we would like to migrate our Clients who are willing/requesting to go from Oracle to SQL. Seems easy enough.

So, I create a Database in SQL 2005, right click and select "Import Data", Source is Microsoft OLE DB Provider for Oracle and I setup my connection. so far so good.

I create my Destination for SQL Native Client to the Database that I plan on importing into. Still good

Next, I select "Copy data from one or more tables or views". I move on to the next screen and select all of the Objects from a Schema. These are Tables that only relate to our application or in other words, nothing Oracle System wise.

When I get to the end it progresses to about 20% and then throws this error about 300 or so times:

Could not connect source component.
Warning 0x80202066: Source - AM_ALERTS [1]: Cannot retrieve the column code page info from the OLE DB provider. If the component supports the "DefaultCodePage" property, the code page from that property will be used. Change the value of the property if the current string code page values are incorrect. If the component does not support the property, the code page from the component's locale ID will be used.

So, I'm thinking "Alright, we can search on this error and I'm sure there's an easy fix." I do some checking and indeed find out that there is a property setting called "AlwaysUseDefaultCodePage" in the OLEDB Data Source Properties. Great! I go back and look at the connection in the Import and .... there's nothing with that property!

Back to the drawing board. I Create a new SSIS package and figure out quickly that the AlwaysUseDefaultCodePage is in there. I can transfter information from the Oracle Source Table to the SQL Server 2005 Destination Table, but it appears to be a one to one thing. Programming this, if I get it to work at all, will take me about 150 hours or so.

This make perfect sense if all you are doing is copying a few columns or maybe one or two objects, but I am talking about 600 + objects with upwards of 2 million rows of data in each!!

This generates 2 questions:
1. If the Import Data Wizard cannot handle this operation on the fly, then why can't the AlwaysUseDefaultCodePage property be shown as part of the connection
2. How do I create and SSIS Package that will copy all of the data from Oracle to SQL Server? The source tables have been created and have the same Schema and Object Names as the Source. I don't want to create a Data Flow Task 600 times.

Help!!!

How Do You Connect To Networked SqlServer 2005 Express Using The Add New Data Source Wizard

Sep 7, 2006

Hi All,

I want to connect to SQLExpress database on the network. I can do so using code but I want to use the Data Source Configuration Wizard. It seems this only works for local instances of SQL server. Is this true?

I can connect just fine to the database on the network using Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express...for what this is worth.

I have tried to map a drive to the SQL server machine and pick the mdf file but I get the error msg of network path is not supported for database files....I have turned on allow remote connections, allow tcp/ip, named pipes, added sqlserv.exe and sqlbrowser.exe to my firewall exceptions ect..

I want to be able to use Table Adapters, SqlDataAdapters ect. After reading numerous forum questions/ kb articles this seems to be a common problem. I am on the verge of just saying forget it and use MS Access instead.

Thanks in advance!

Cannot Open User Database Error Message AFTER I Connect And Log In.

Aug 29, 2006

Ok so I'm using the Management Studio Express and was able to log in and get into the database server, but I had to click the "options>>" button and change database I wanted to connect to from <<default>> to my database on the server or else I get the "cannot open user database, login failed" error message.Then I right click my database and it gives me the "Cannot open user database.  Login failed" error message, even though I already connected to the database to login during the connect screen. Also I'm able to interact with the database using SQL QUERIES in the Management Studio, like adding new tables with it, but if I right click the database and click "add table" I get that error.What gives?  I know I have permission since I was able to log on, and modify the database using SQL queries but if use the GUI I can't use it.  I can't even right-click select "properties" without getting that error. The reason I want to use the GUI is because I want to right click and use the backup feature of the database.My guess is that Management Studio continues to point to the default database(which gives me that message) after I already logged in, so I have no idea how to change the default database that management studio points to, to the one I do have permission to use. Thanks in advance.

Failure To Pass Connection String To Child Package In A Batch File

Jan 18, 2008

I apologize in advance for posting yet another connection failure issue. I went through quite a few posts and could not find the actual answer so here is the issue. I have a main SSIS package to call five other packages. This seems to work fine in my BIDS workstation; however, when I copied it, including the bat file that was created by dtexecui utility, to the production environment (which runs on 64 bit - probably has nothing to do with the 64 bit platform), the main package executes fine but the child packages failed with this error:
Description: An OLE DB error has occurred. Error code: 0x80004005.
An OLE DB record is available. Source: "Microsoft SQL Native Client" Hresult:
0x80004005 Description: "Login timeout expired".
An OLE DB record is available. Source: "Microsoft SQL Native Client" Hresult:
0x80004005 Description: "An error has occurred while establishing a connection
to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by
the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote conne
ctions.".

It seems that the child packages are still using the old connection strings from my workstation. My question is how can I pass the connection string from the batch file to all the child packages that the parent (main) package is using.

Thanks,
Andrew

Apr 25, 2007

Hi, I'm new to SQL Express 2005.
I found information regarding : "Cannot open user default database. Login failed."on this forum but I think that in my case it's a bit different issue.
I have a website (ASP.NET 2.0) accessing DB, in the mean time Windows Service tries to update some data in the same DB (Service runs as NT AUTHORITYLOCAL SYSTEM). The second connection is rejected: "Cannot open user default database. Login failed.Login failed for user ....".
Problem occurs only when both: service and website are running at the same time. So service and website are running without problems when they are connecting DB exclusively.
My connection string is:
"Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename="|DataDirectory|spider-lab.mdf";Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True"

I would be grateful if you can help me

Why Can't I Connect To SQLServer With An Incomplete Conn. String ?

Dec 23, 2004

I found out that I could use SQLDMO to enumerate objects in a SQL server. However, I can't connect to my server, even though I have both "windows and SQL server" authentication on "(local) Windows NT".

Here is the code (it does not contain the validation in this snippet):

Imports System.Data.SqlClient
Imports SQLDMO

Public Class ADO_2
Inherits System.Web.UI.Page
Protected WithEvents txtQuery As System.Web.UI.WebControls.TextBox
Protected WithEvents txtresults As System.Web.UI.WebControls.TextBox
Protected WithEvents lstDB As System.Web.UI.WebControls.DropDownList
Protected WithEvents lblResult As System.Web.UI.WebControls.Label
Protected WithEvents cmdExecute As System.Web.UI.WebControls.Button
Protected WithEvents cmdNext As System.Web.UI.WebControls.Button

Private m_objConn As New SqlConnection()
Private m_objSQLServer As SQLDMO.SQLServer

Private Sub Page_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load

EnumerateDatabases()

'TEMP
lstDB.Items.Add("Northwind")
lstDB.Items.Add("Pubs")
'END TEMP
End Sub

Private Sub Page_Unload(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Unload

m_objConn.Close() 'Just in case.....
End Sub

Private Sub cmdExecute_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles cmdExecute.Click

Dim objCommand As SqlCommand
Dim objDataReader As SqlDataReader
Dim intField As Integer

txtresults.Text = String.Empty
m_objConn.ConnectionString = "server=radu;database=" & lstDB.SelectedItem.Text & ";integrated security=SSPI;"
m_objConn.Open()

objCommand = New SqlCommand(txtQuery.Text, m_objConn)
objDataReader = objCommand.ExecuteReader

While objDataReader.Read
txtresults.Text &= vbNewLine
For intField = 0 To objDataReader.FieldCount - 1
txtresults.Text &= objDataReader(intField).ToString.PadRight(15)
Next
End While

objDataReader.Close()
objDataReader = Nothing
objCommand = Nothing
m_objConn.Close()

End Sub

Private Sub EnumerateDatabases()

On Error GoTo EnumerateDatabasesError

Dim objSQLDatabase As SQLDMO.Database

m_objSQLServer = New SQLDMO.SQLServer()
m_objSQLServer.Connect("radu")

'Iterate through all databases on the target server:
For Each objSQLDatabase In m_objSQLServer.Databases
lstDB.Items.Add(objSQLDatabase.Name)
Next objSQLDatabase

EnumerateDatabasesExit:
objSQLDatabase = Nothing
m_objSQLServer.Close()
m_objSQLServer = Nothing
Exit Sub

EnumerateDatabasesError:
lblResult.Text = Err.Number.ToString & ", " & Err.Description
Resume EnumerateDatabasesExit
End Sub
End Class

Why can't I connect with m_objSQLServer.Connect("radu") ? I also tried m_objSQLServer.Connect("radu", "", ""). Otherwise, I can connect just fine with m_objConn.Open() (after I select a db from the dropdownlist, which is for now populated by hand)....

Thanks a lot for your time.

Alex.

Connection String To Connect To SQLServer Express?

Feb 22, 2006

Hi

I've been trying to get DotNetNuke to connect to a SQLServer Express database but no luck. I've had no luck with info from their forums...

The connection string I'm supposed to use is:

<add
name="SiteSqlServer"
connectionString="Data Source=.SQLExpress;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True;AttachDBFilename=|DataDirectory|Database.mdf;"
providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />

I just can't get it to connect to the database. Says something that remote connections are not allowed. I've done the Area thing and allowed all connection including remote connections.

Can't we use the standard string like:

<add
name="SiteSqlServer"
connectionString="Server=(local);Database=DotNetNuke;uid=;pwd=;"
providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />

...to connect? I'd like to setup a user and give the username and password in the connection string - real easy and non-complicated...

Any ideas or help?

Andre

Cannot Connect W/ Java App But Can Connect W/ .Net App - SQL Server Express 2005

Dec 12, 2006

I'm having a problem connecting with a Java application but I CAN connect using my .Net application - the user name and password are the same for both (using the same database on SQL Server Express 2005).

The error I get is: "com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerException: Cannot open database "CORNERS" requested by the login. The login failed." An interesing note - I get the same message if the database is not running.

SQL Server Express 2005 is installed in mixed mode.

Here is my connection string in the .Net appplication: <add key="connectString" value="Server=(local);UID=sa;PWD=myPasswd;Database=CORNERS" />.

These are my values in my Java app web.xml -

<init-param>
<param-name>DBDriver</param-name>
<param-value>com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerDriver</param-value>
</init-param>
<init-param>
<param-name>DBURL</param-name> <param-value>jdbc:sqlserver://localhostsqlexpress:1055;databaseName=CORNERS</param-value>
</init-param>
<init-param>
<param-name>DBUser</param-name>
<param-value>sa</param-value>
</init-param>
<init-param>
<param-name>DBPwd</param-name>
<param-value>myPasswd</param-value>
</init-param>.

And yes, the port is 1055 - I checked to find it.

I am using Microsoft SQL Server 2005 JDBC Driver 1.0 (sqljdbc_1.0.809.102).

Does anyone have any idea what is wrong so that the login fails in the Java application but works in the .Net application?

Cannot Open User Default Database. Login Failed. (only When IDE Is Open)

Sep 7, 2007

I get the below error only when my IDE open. It connects well when it is found closed.
[SqlException (0x80131904): Cannot open user default database. Login failed.Login failed for user 'JPASPNET'.]
I could solve this by giving the logged in windows user to impersonate under IIS window > WEBSITE > ASP.NET tab > EDIT CONFIG > APPLICATION tab
But I wish someone could give me the proper solution.
I almost tried all from giving ASPNET user as a administrator to configuring the same in Express management tool.
Environment: XP pro, VWD and SQL Express

SQL Server 2008 :: Search Each And Every String In Comma Delimited String Input (AND Condition)

Mar 10, 2015

I have a scenario where in I need to use a comma delimited string as input. And search the tables with each and every string in the comma delimited string.

Example:
DECLARE @StrInput NVARCHAR(2000) = '.NET,Java, Python'

SELECT * FROM TABLE WHERE titleName = '.NET' AND titleName='java' AND titleName = 'Python'

As shown in the example above I need to take the comma delimited string as input and search each individual string like in the select statement.

SQL Server 2012 :: Finding Longest String Within A String Field

Mar 20, 2014

We have some URLs within a bulk block of text some of which are very long. I need to identify rows where such urls exceed say 100 characters in length in amongst other text.So the rule would be return a record if within the string there is a string (without spaces) longer than 100 characters.
