Attach Aspnetdb.mdf Failed, But I Can't Find Attach Statement In The Web.config
Nov 21, 2007
An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file C:WebApp_Dataaspnetdb.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share.
My web.config file, the connection strings
<connectionStrings>
<add name="POAdatabaseConnectionString1" connectionString="Data Source=sss;Persist Security Info=True;Initial Catalog=POAdatabase.mdf;Integrated Security=SSPI"
providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />
</connectionStrings>
I cann't really find the statement for attaching aspnetdb.mdf. I don't where to find it. Is there any other web.config file in the C drive? Thanks for help!

I wrote an application using Visual Studio 2005 beta 2 which uses a SQL Express .mdf file, included in the project, for the database. After installing Visual Studio 2005 RC and the SQL Express that comes with it (I followed all of the uninstall instructions first) I can no longer add a SQL Express database to any of my projects, nor can I open the SQL Express database in my original project. When I try either of these tasks, I get the "Failed to generate user instance of SQL Server due to a failure in starting the process for the user instance. The connection will be closed." I read the thread which dealt with this error, and changed the connection string for the database file that had worked before to User Instance = false. The moment I click Test Connection or OK, I get the error: "An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file C:<path to project>EngSQL.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share." (<path to project> is actually a full path, I didn't want to type the whole thing out. :) ). A search for this error turns up a solution of setting User Instance = false, which puts me in a catch 22 position.

For a test I detached a database, copied the ldf to a new location, and re-attached successfully. OK, now I want to use the orignial ldf, so I detach, and when I try to attach to the origninal ldf I get:

Any Ideas on what happened and how to reattach to my original log file?

Here's the scoop, I got a generic-purpose database (in the form of*.mdb and *.ldf) from a 'reputable' source on the net. But when Iattempted to attach it to my sql server 2000 with SP3 with EM, itfailed complaining "Could not find row in sysindexes for database ID10, object ID 1, index ID 1. Run DBCC CHECKTABLE on sysindexes."Then, I attempted to command line attach (thought it may have someoption...), same outcome. Then, ran a search on this NG, and foundthe following thread, the question is, MS most likely would notsupport something like this, so now what? Also thought aboutmanually adding a row to sysindexes table to 'fool the attach process'but after looking at some sample data in this table, I don't thinkit's a good idea to try, what can I do? Thanks.http://groups.google.com/group/comp...3bee910fa30aa9a

RESOLVED RESOLVED RESOLVED
DOH! When I rebuilt the OS, I changed the data partition ID's, and didn't remember to change them in the connetion strings
Not great, but better than continuing to bang head against wall.
Would like to say to MS appreciators that the VS2005 reinstall actually went quite well, considering.
===========================================================================
I built an app, works fine. Had the development environment working fine (VS2005 (SP0) and SQL Server Express). It had been stable for months, no problem.
Then I had to reinstall XP Pro...(finally threw too many conflicting programs into it, I guess...)
I managed to get VS2005 reinstalled ok. However, when I opened and compiled my existing app in VS2005, using Cassini, I got the dreaded error:
An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file <file string> failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share.
I also get this error for the compiled copy of the app on the same machine, running on IIS. (Where it also previously worked fine).
The Connection strings are all of the form
connectionString="Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=(specific file string).MDF;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True"
I appreciate that there are zillions of posts on this issue. I'm hoping that someone might know why this should happen in this particular case.
The thing that's different about this case is that the app was working fine; I have the app deployed on a demo machine and also on a remote server as well as on the development machine.
The only thing that changed is that there was this fresh install of SQL Server Express.
I tried using >> sp_configure user instances enabled','1';RECONFIGURE <<< in SSMSEE, which took, but didn't help.
So something is different in SSE. Since the app is stable everywhere else, I REALLY don't want to go through and adjust the connection strings...MUCH better to figure out what SSE needs to be happy with the existing connection strings...as it was before.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks!
EDIT----TRIED SOME THINGS:
Changed folder and file permissions to allow ASPNET full access to the .mdf's and log files (though never had to do this before on the development machine.) No change...
Can see the table contents within the .mdf through SSMSE, and also through Server Explorer in VS2005.
So because the problem happens with both IIS and Cassini, I'm assuming it's got to be an issue between ASPNET and SSE.
EDIT --- TRIED SOME MORE THINGS:
I dimly remember that when I had this problem before, it was that the error message was too "dumb". It wasn't my file that had the permissions problems, it was that the SSE System Databases had to have permissions with respect to ASPNET.
I tried to set that up but I'm a complete newb on this area, so I don't know if I did it right. In SSMSE I created a Login for MyComputer/ASPNET, and gave it all permissions and roles, and then made it an owner for the four system databases...but no joy.
Any pointers on this last piece would be helpful.
EDIT - MORE INFO
The error details

I know allot of folks are having this problem and I tried lots of things but nothing works. I understand the problem is coping the SQL Express on another server is the problem - I just not sure what to do?
Version Information: Microsoft .NET Framework Version:2.0.50727.42; ASP.NET Version:2.0.50727.42
This is the last statement on the Stack Trace:
SqlException (0x80131904): An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file e:wwwdata81d0493fwwwApp_DataTestDatabase.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share.]
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlInternalConnection.OnError(SqlException exception, Boolean breakConnection) +735091
I checked my server forum and they said I had to name a database:
Example: Database=(unique name);
But this didn't work either.
I just tried a simple web project that has only one database and one table in SQL Express with one sqldatasource and one datagrid. It works fine on my pc but when I use the copy function in Visio Studio 2005 Pro - I can't run the site on the remote server: www.myjewelrydirect.com
I tried coping the database manually. I tried disconnecting the database before I copy it. Below is my connection statement:
<connectionStrings>
<add name="TestDB" connectionString="Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|TestDatabase.mdf;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True"
providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />
</connectionStrings>
With all the comments in these forums - this must be a bug.
I have been working on this problem for over 2 weeks - HELP!

I am getting the error:
Cannot open database "aspnetdb" requested by the login. The login failed.
When I browse to my ASP.NET 3.5 LINQ web application on the IIS 6.0 server on Server 2003.
I imagine this is because while I granted SQL Server 2005 login and permissions to my database that the application stores its data in, I did NOT grant any rights to the service account the IIS Application Pool uses for its identity to the aspnetdb database on SQL Server which is where all my roles information is stored at.
My question is what are the MINIMUM permissions needed for this database so it can perform its roles related functions?
I'm using Windows Authentications with the SQL Role provider for authorization.
Thank you.
EDIT: I think I only need to open the aspnetdb database and add my login to the aspnet_Roles_FullAccess role. Is that correct?

Greetings, I have just arrived back into the country (NZ) and back into ASP.NET.
I am having trouble with the following:An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file (file location).../Database.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share.
It has only begun since i decided i wanted to use IIS, I realise VWD comes with its own localhost, but since it is only temporary, i wanted a permanent shortcut on my desktop to link to my intranet page.
Anyone have any ideas why i am getting the above error? have searched many places on the internet and not getting any closer.

I've created a database inside my ASP.net project, the database is in the App_Data folder as exepcted.I can't run the aspnet_regsql until I have attached it using SQL Server Management Studio, but when I try to attach the database it doesn't let me navigate through my folders properly. The database is in C:UsersWardieDocumentsFirstProjectApp_Data but SQL SMS only lets me navigate to the folder C:UsersWardie and no further for some reason, meaning I can't attach the database and can't use the aspnet_regsql service to create the membership tables.Does anyone know how to fix this?

I know the chances of getting a positive answer on this are remote but here goes:
I have a db that I need to move to a new server (that isnt on the same network !)
Firstly tried, backing up the DB, copying the backup to various removable media, copied it onto the new server, then tried restoring. The restore almost completes, then comes up that backup is incomplete !
If I restore the DB on the original server from the same backup file it works fine !
Second method, detached the DB, copied the mdf file to a memory stick, copied onto the new server, attempted to attach the mdf file and get:
I/O error (bad page ID) detected during read at offset 0x00000003f80000 in file ..........mdf
Error: 823, Severity: 24, State: 2
If I re-attach the file on the original server this works !!!
My next step will be to get the two servers connected over the network, so that I can use DTS, but this is not ideal and would like to avoid this if possible.
If anybody has any suggestions, I would be eternally grateful.
p.s. I have tried restoring/attaching on other servers in case it was a problem with the new server, but get the same problems.
Regards
Tom

I feel that I have done something stupid here.
I used SSMSE to detach my database so that I could create a copy - no problem here.
But then in SSMSE I right-clicked Databases, chose attach and expected to see my original database. But there are no databases shown in the attach window!
I have tried to find the original database in SSMSE but nothing I do allows me to see it. However, Windows Explorer shows me that the files are still where they were when I detached them.
Please help - this is driving me crazy.

Hey gang,I've been trying to restore a DB from it's MDF and LDF all morning;the catch? The LDF appears to be corrupt.When I first started the SQL Server, the db in question was marked as"Suspect'. I did some research on this and it has caused me to attemptdetaching, backing up, deleting the LDF, using ATTACH DB and evensp_attach_single_file_db, and sp_add_data_file_recover_suspect_db.Nothing works.So, with an MDF and no LDF ... is it possible to recreate thisdatabase somehow? Can I attach the MDF to another (empty) database toretrieve it's contents? (Tried it, couldn't get it to work), can Iextract the contents of the MDF - even if it's just the objects andnot the data itself - in some capacity?I've read in various places about attaching an MDF with no LDF and thesystem will recreate the LDF as needed, but that doesn't work either.Ideas are most, most, most welcome.
