My requirement is i want to auto generate ID'S in sqlserver that means
in database one column is there recordid for that coloumn i want to add numbers with no duplication like JDS 10001,JDS 10002,JDS 10003............like that if any record added in database means automatically add that type of id's
if suddenly we deleted that record means that id will not add again how to do dat??
I have a table called dbo.test. This table is built with two columns, namely; col_id and col_name.. Now, I want col_id to be auto-populated when a new col_name is added. But the col_id - should be of formulae xyyyy
where x = 2
and yyyy = will be incremental
Therefore, the first 3 records will be like ;
col_id Col_name
20001 A
20002 B
20003 C
......
......
and so on
Now, is there a way SQL can auto-populate teh col_id whenever a col_name is added?

Hello, I have a table (publication) that has a primary key pubID which is an identity specification. This ID already has relationships to other tables.
I am having problems trying to make one of the other columns in the same table to auto generate. This column (bibNumber) is not related to any other table. All i want to do is when i create a new record in the table, auto generate a number for this column bibNumber.
How can i do this?

1) I have a report with many parameters that I want users to be able to pick from. Allow them to pick 1, many or all to build their report dynamically. I'm all set on the TSQL side, but on the Reporting Services side I have to allow each parameter to be null with a default of NULL. In by doing this, the report will auto run, which I do not want to happen. The only resolution I've found thus far was by adding a parameter that does nothing, with a NULL default value. Yet It sticks out like a sore thumb on the report and I want to get rid of it. If I check in "Hidden" in the parameter options, my report errors out stating that the parameter requires a value.
2) Is it possible to have a parameter that has available values from a dataset have a NULL checkbox like those of parameters that do not have available values?
3) Is it possible to add back/forward buttons inside of a report instead of just at the report header by default?

Hi I am not sure if I am at right place, anyhow I hope I am :) Now the question: I am using an ASP.net Application with SQL-Server. I want to make a page so that it set the expiration time (date) for certain record and once that time reaches, it deletes those records, or make any updates to the record (what ever applicable). I also want to control this auto deletion from my application, means that turn this On/Off whenever needed. I am not sure how to start this. I was told by a friend that I need to use triggers from SQL-server but I need some help. Can anyone help me out on this? RegardsMykhan

Since upgrading from SQL Server Management Studio 2008 R2, I've noticed that it no longer autosaves queries that have not been manually saved first. If a file has been manually saved the autorecover files end up in the following directory:
%appdata%MicrosoftSQL Server Management Studio11.0AutoRecoverDatSolution1
However, I have ended up in the situation where I have unsaved queries when my computer has crashed and have not been able to recover them.
I have also found references to .sql files stored in temp files in the following directory, but the files here seem to be very haphazardly caught:
%userprofile%AppDataLocalTemp

Hello everybody,I was configuring a SqlDataSource control using SQL Authentication mode.I first added a database file (testdb.mdf) through Solution Explorer-Add New Items. Then through Database Explorer I created a table named "info"Then while configuring the SqlDataSource control I used the SQL Authentication mode and attached the "testdb.mdf" database file.Test Connection showed success. But when I hit the Ok button of the wizard it displayed the following error message:Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server. Only an integrated connection can generate a user instance.While configuring the SqlDataSource control I clicked "New Connection". Under Data Source section I tried both Microsoft SQL Server and Microsoft SQL Server Database File. And in both the cases I attached a databese file(testdb.mdf). View 1 Replies View RelatedWe have a static class that makes an HTTPWebRequest to get XML data from one of our vendors. We use this as input to a stored proc in SQLServer2005. When I compile this class and call it from a console application in visual studio it executes in milliseconds, everytime. When I compile it, create the assembly and clr function and execute it in SQLServer, it takes around 14 seconds to execute the first time, then on subsequent requests it is again really fast, until I wait for 10 seconds and re-execute, once again it is slow the first time and then fast on subsequent requests. We do not see this behavior when executing outside SQLServer. Makes me think that some sort of authentication is perhaps taking place the first time the function is run in SQLServer? I have no idea how to debug this further. Anyone seen this before or have any ideas?

I have a problem with unicode character 0x2300
I created this table
create table testunicode (Bez nchar(128))
Insert Data
insert into testunicode (Bez)values('Œ€„¢')
with 2 Unicode characters
Œ€ = 0x2300
„¢ = 0x2122
Selecting the data
select Bez from testunicode
I see
"?„¢"
„¢ = 0x2122 is ok but instead of 0x2300 there is 0x3f
When I modify the insert statement like that ( 8960 = 0x2300 )
insert into testunicode (Bez)values(NCHAR(8960)+'„¢')
and select again voila i see
"Œ€„¢"
Does anyone have an idea?

I am trying to 'load' a copy of a SQLServer 2000 database to SQLServer 2005 Express (on another host). The copy was provided by someone else - it came to me as a MDF file only, no LDF file.
I have tried to Attach the database and it fails with a failure to load the LDF. Is there any way to bypass this issue without the LDF or do I have to have that?
The provider of the database says I can create a new database and just point to the MDF as the data source but I can't seem to find a way to do that? I am using SQL Server Management Studio Express.

Is it possible to do a direct replacement of sqlserver 2000 with sqlserver 2005 express just by reconfiguring the app to point to the express? The app would still be using the sqlserver 2000 jdbc driver to try and make the connection.
If that is a possibility, what can be some differences in the configuration? Previously with 2000 the config information I entered is:
server name: "machinename"( or ip). I've also tried "machiname/SQLEXPRESS"
DB name: name of db instance
port: 1433(default)
user and pass.
My attempts so far results in

I am in the process of planning a server upgrade to sql2005 x64.
I created 2 linked servers: one to a SQL2000 sp4 server and one to a SQL7.0 SP3.
I have the following error when I query the linked servers.
OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "IVDM2K" returned message "Unspecified error".
OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "IVDM2K" returned message "The stored procedure required to complete this operation could not be found on the server. Please contact your system administrator.".
Msg 7311, Level 16, State 2, Line 1
Cannot obtain the schema rowset "DBSCHEMA_TABLES_INFO" for OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "IVDM2K". The provider supports the interface, but returns a failure code when it is used.
I am aware of KB 906954.

I applied the instcat.sql on the SQL2000SP4 server and my linked server issues for that one are gone.
However, I ran the instcat.sql script on the SQL7.0 sp3 server and the linked server is still giving me an issue.
Can someone help me find a solution to this?

I am new to SQL Server 2005. I tried connecting to my local machine by using my machine name as Server name and then tried running the following query:
SELECT * FROM SYS.Objects. It gives me following error:
Invalid object name 'sys.objects'.
Whereas, if I connect to my local machine using mahcinenameSQLEXPRESS, then the above mentioned query runs fine.
Why is this difference? What is the difference when I login in these 2 different ways.
Any help would be appreciated.

One of my first tasks on my current project was to generate all of the SQL scripts needed to rebuild the database. Of course, one of the catches was that everything needed to be separated out (table columns in different script from PKs different from FKs different from DEFAULTs, etc., etc.). And we wanted our own comment block inserted. So, I couldn't just use the Generate SQL Script from Enterprise Manager and be done with it. I was going to need to do some more work. Well, here's one of the scripts I wrote to build the FK scripts. Execute this script, then copy & paste the results into a new window. Break apart into separate .sql files as desired.
NOTE: Be sure to show results in Text (not grid) and change the display options in QA to return more than just 256 characters.

Does anyone know how to use for xml auto that will format an xml response to show the parent/child relationships? I currently have the parents and children in a temp table and can only get a formatting so that each one is returned at a parent. how can i select the results from the temp table so for xml auto will return the properly formatted xml file?

The upgrade adviser for for 2k5 says something about derived tables being handled differently between 2k and 2K5 and it says to query the tables directly but this does not seem to make much sense because I thought FOR XML AUTO just created some generic XML for presentation purposes. These 2 stored procedures that it is complaining about do query the tables directly and they use the FOR XML AUTO to control the output.Does anyone know if I have to worry about this? I am tempted to let this slide and check out this part of the application after the migration happens tomorrow for QA to start testing.Yes I have been googling, checking my books and digging around in BOL. I am not seeing anything.DISREGARD: I found my derived table. It appears to change the output of the XML. Perfect.
