Auto Identity For Each Type

Jan 9, 2007

Hello,

I am working on an accounting system using VB.NET and sql server 2005 as a database. the application should be used by multiple users.
i have a the following structure:
Voucher: ID (primary), Date,TypeID, ReferenceCode, .....
Type: ID, Code, Name. (the user can add new type anytime!)
(Ex: PV- payment voucher, JV - Journal Voucher ,....)

When adding a voucher the user will choose a type, according to this type (for each year) a counter will be increminted.
for example: PV1, PV2....PV233,... the other type will have its separate counter JV1, JV2 ,...JV4569,..
I am using the sqlTransaction cause i am doing other operations that should be transactional with the insertion of the Voucher.

The question is :
What is the best solution to generate a counter for each type?(With code sample)

Thanks.

Identity Value Not Auto Incrementing

Feb 19, 2008

My Identity value column is not autoincrementing, its seed is set to 1, and increment set to 1.
yet when i click the auto generated 'Add New Record' button in the BindingNavigator control set (in a form where it is populated with databound text boxes), this Identity column is not auto incremented?

And if i try to write a value to this column, i get the error telling me this column cannot be written to. Yet if i do not write to it, then i get "This column does not allow nulls"

To load my data i am using:

Code Snippet
'clear dataset
Me.DsQuote.Clear()
'fill the datagrid with data from tblQuoteID
Me.TblQuoteIDTableAdapter.Fill(Me.DsQuote.tblQuoteID)

and to save data im using:

Code Snippet
Me.Validate()
'end data edit
Me.TblQuoteIDBindingSource.EndEdit()
'update the dataset with table data
Me.TblQuoteIDTableAdapter.Update(DsQuote.tblQuoteID)

anything im doing wrong? this data is being viewed in a datagrid btw.

cheers

Identity / Auto Incrementing Column

Feb 16, 2006

Hi,
I have an auto incrementing int column setup which serves as my unique primary key.  Just wondering what happens when the auto increment reaches the limit?  Will it recycle numbers from the begining (who's rows have obviously been deleted by this stage)?

Two Column Auto-number/identity

Oct 8, 2007

Hi,

I have the following two tables:

Code:

create table RECORD
(
ID int not null,
Issue_descr varchar(256) not null,
Priority varchar(5) not null,
Status varchar(12) not null,
Date_add varchar(10) not null,
Date_due varchar(10) not null,
Date_complete varchar(10),
PName varchar(32),
primary key(ID),
foreign key(PName) references PROJECT(PName)
);

and

Code:

create table STEPS
(
ID int not null,
Num int not null,
Descr varchar(256),
Date_due varchar(10) not null,
Date_complete varchar(10),
Status varchar(12),
primary key(ID, Num),
foreign key(ID) references RECORD(ID)
);

I have set PK "ID" in table RECORD to auto identity(1,1). I have done the same for PK "num" in table STEPS.
However I am seeking this behavior in STEPS:
ID num
-- ----
19 1
19 2
19 3
20 1
20 2
21 1

but what I'm getting is PK num doesn't "reseed" or reset to 1 as "ID" changes. PK num just auto-increments regardless of ID. Is there a workaround?

Thanks.

Insert Value In An Auto-identity Column

Jul 23, 2005

I'm a bit new to SQL Server, but here is the problem I am trying to getaround:1. I have lets say an Employee table where the emp_id is an identitycolumn that is auto assigned by the db.2. I wish to insert values into the tables, but sometimes I may wish touse the value of the emp_id that i supply while inserting (andsometimes not).Is there any way in MS SQL to do this? For e.g. is it setup like aconstraint that I can temporarily drop. I do not want to alter thetable, so that option is ruled out.Any other ways to do this (I know bcp is one of them that allows me todo this, but looking for ways in the db itself using SQL if possible)Thanks,Bharat

Auto-number/Identity Column

Jul 20, 2005

I am migrating a web application I wrote from ASP to ASP.Net, and fromAccess to MS SQL server. In the Access version, I did not use the auto number for creatinginvoices and other documents, because I heard somewhere (perhapsincorrectly) that if the db was ever compacted or otherwise changed,it could change the values of the auto-numbers. Not a good thing. So I wrote a routine that, just before creating a new record, wouldlook for the highest value in the table and create the new record withthe next number. So my question is, am I safe in assuming that in MS SQL that I can seta starting number for the next, let's say, invoice and that newnumbers will be issued in sequence, and that these numbers will neverchange? What happens if an invoice is deleted? is the number goneforever? Just wondering how others deal with these issues...thanks.Larry- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -"Forget it, Jake. It's Chinatown."

How To Extract Auto-generated Int Identity PK Field Value Immediately After It's Made ?

Sep 12, 2007

Ok, let's say that I do a following inline INSERT statement.....
INSERT INTO Car ( carMake, carModel ) VALUES ( 'Honda', 'S2000' )
When I do this, a carId int value will automatically be generated because it is the Car table's PK and is an int identity.  How do I obtain this value so I can immediately use it in let's say, the following example.
INSERT INTO Person ( carId ) VALUES ( @carId ) ..... where @carId is the value I need
Maybe you would say I should do something like.....
SELECT carId FROM Car WHERE carMake = 'Honda' AND carModel = 'S2000'
However, let's assume that the carMake and the carModel fields are NOT unique.  I'm sure there's an easy way to extract the new identity value (maybe even in the same query) as the INSERT, but I just don't know how.
Thanks.

Row Count/Identity Type Processing In SSIS

Dec 5, 2007

I've got a falrly simple task I'd like to achieve in SSIS without scripting if possible.

I have a table with three columns, Cust ID, Address and Group ID
I want to update the Group ID with a counter that increments every time the Address changes.

So currently the table looks like

Cust ID Address Group ID
62 ABC
57 DEF
79 DEF
42 GHI
11 JKL
20 JKL

and I want to end up with

Cust ID Address Group ID
62 ABC 1
57 DEF 2
79 DEF 2
42 GHI 3
11 JKL 4
20 JKL 4

I have created a view over this table that counts and Groups by address. This looks like

Count Address
1 ABC
2 DEF
1 GHI
2 JKL

What I'm thinking of doing is reading the View in Address order and updating the table (joining on Address) with a counter that increments for every row of the View read.

What I'm not sure of is how to increment this counter without creating a script. One thought I had was to create a new table from the view, and add an Identity column somehow (is this feasible in SSIS?)

Any advice appreciated

Identity Columns Fails To Increment After 2147483585 - Numeric Data Type

Nov 20, 2007

I had a strange problem today with one of the identity fields in a frequently used table. It appears that the Identity column for a table had stopped incrementing after it reached 2147483585. Since I had inherited this table, I am not sure if the identity column type has been modified from int to numeric, but the current type is Numeric (9) which is 19 precision and 0 scale value.

When resetting the seed to 1, it started working. I tried creating a temp table with numeric value and it increments well beyond billions with no problems.

Has anyone encountered this? Any best practices around defining Identity data type (ie. use int or bigint and avoide Numeric)?
Thanks

Last GASP On Insert Row In Table With Identity Field, And Get New Identity Back ?

Jul 9, 2006

While I have learned a lot from this thread I am still basically confused about the issues involved.

.I wanted to INSERT a record in a parent table, get the Identity back and use it in a child table. Seems simple.

To my knowledge, mine would be the only process running that would update these tables. I was told that there is no guarantee, because the OLEDB provider could write the second destination row before the first, that the proper parent-child relationship would be generated as expected. It was recommended that I create my own variable in memory to hold the Identity value and use that in my SSIS package.

1. A simple example SSIS .dts example illustrating the approach of using a variable for identity would be helpful.

2. Suppose I actually had two processes updating these tables, running at the same time. Then it seems the "variable" method will also have its problems. Is there a final solution other than locking the tables involved prior to updating them or doing something crazy like using a GUID for the primary key!

3. We have done the type of parent-child inserts I originally described from t-sql for years without any apparent problems. (Maybe we were just lucky.) Is the entire issue simply a t-sql one or does SSIS add a layer of complexity beyond t-sql that needs to be addressed?

TIA,

TSQL - Using ALTER TABLE - ALTER COLUMN To Modify Column Type / Set Identity Column

Sep 7, 2007

Hi guys,
If I have a temporary table called #CTE

[RowID Data Level]
and I need to change the column type for the columns:
[RowID Table Level]

to integer, and set the column [RowID Table Level] as Identity (index) starting from 1, incrementing 1 each time.
What will be the right syntax using SQL SERVER 2000?

I am trying to solve the question in the link below:

Thanks in advance,

I have tried the code below, but getting syntax error...

ALTER TABLE #CTE

I have also tried:

MODIFY

How To Use Identity On Non-identity Column (with Concurrence)

Aug 1, 2014

I'm working with a third-party database (SQL Server 2005) and the problem here is the following:

- There are a bunch of ETL processes that needs to insert rows on a table (let's call this table T) and at the same time, an ERP (owner of T) is up and running (reading, updating and inserting on T).

- The PK of T is an Integer.

Today all ETL processes uses (select max(ID) + 1 from T) to insert new rows, so just picture the scenario. It is a mess! Everyday they get duplicate key error when 2 or more concurrent processes are trying to insert a row (with the max) at the same time.

Considering that I can't change the PK, what is the best approach to solve this problem?

To sum up:

* I need to have processes in parallel inserting on T

* I can't change anything on T

* The PK is NOT an Identity

Float Type Steals My Decimal Points And Money Type Kills My Query

Mar 28, 2008

Happy Friday!
A while since I have posted a question, and this one is probably real easy.
I am trying to store numeric values from a php form in MSSQL 2000 database. However, the columns are set to float and if the value is 1.00, when entered into the table it is saved as 1

If I change the column type to money, the query fails, with an error message of conversion of datatype varchar to datatype money statement terminated.

How To Declare A Procedure Parameter Type To Match A Referenced Table Colum Type

Dec 14, 2007

I like to define my procedure parameter type to match a referenced table colum type,
similar to PL/SQL "table.column%type" notation.
That way, when the table column is changes, I would not have to change my stored proc.
Any suggestion?

Hi,

The table in SQL has column Availability Decimal (8,8)

Code in c# using sqlbulkcopy trying to insert values like 0.0000, 0.9999, 29.999 into the field Availability

we need to store values as is

Implement Time Interval Type In Form Of User Defined Type

Dec 7, 2011

Implement time interval type in the form of a user defined type in SS2k8r2? Specifically an interval type described in the book Temporal Data and the Relational Model by C. J. Date at all. As an example, an interval is below:

1/4/2006:1/10/2006

which would mean the time period from 1/4 to 1/10.
