Hello,
I have a column that is not auto-incremented. I would like to make it auto-incremented. For the moment, the only solution I found is to delete my column and to add a new auto-incremented column. The problem is I cannot delete it without deleting dependencies on it... So is there a solution to make an existing column auto-incremented or is it necessary to a create a new column ?
Good day gentleman, Is it possible to pad columns of Int data type with zeros?
I currently have a primary key column of data type Int which is auto-incremented by 1. My problem is I need to pad the auto-incremented ID's with ten zeros so, 0000000009 instead of 9.
I can pad the ID's in the c# dataaccess layer, but i need to generate/store them padded in the database to allow direct reporting.
I am using Enterprise Manager and i can see a Formula field when the table is in design view, can i use this? i am just guessing here.
I am trying to insert into a SQL Server table from an Oracle database. This table has an auto-incremented field, and when I try to insert into this table I get the following error:
Code Snippet [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Cannot insert the value NULL into column '<column_name>', table '<my_table>'; column does not allow nulls. UPDATE fails.[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]The statement has been terminated. (SQL State: 23000; SQL Code: 515)
When I turn off all the triggers in the database, I don't get this error. But that is just a test environment, the production environment will need to have those triggers activated.
Hi. After inserting data (new row) by using DetailsView control, how to read auto incremented primary key (identity) of this new row from sql database to use it as parameter passed to stored procedure?
I have recently been looking at a database and wondered if anyone can tell me what the advantages are supporting a unique collumn, which can essentially be seen as the primary key, with an identity seed integer primary key.
For example:
id [unique integer auto incremented primary key - not null], ClientCode [unique index varchar - not null], name [varchar null], surname [varchar null]
isn't it just better to use ClientCode as the primary key straight of because when one references the above table, it can be done easier with the ClientCode since you dont have to do a lookup on the ClientCode everytime.
I have a table called dbo.test. This table is built with two columns, namely; col_id and col_name.. Now, I want col_id to be auto-populated when a new col_name is added. But the col_id - should be of formulae xyyyy
where x = 2
and yyyy = will be incremental
Therefore, the first 3 records will be like ;
col_id Col_name 20001 A 20002 B 20003 C ...... ...... and so on
Now, is there a way SQL can auto-populate teh col_id whenever a col_name is added?
I have a column that is not set to auto increment "IDX and Im inserting 800 part numbers but i want the IDX column to start at IDX 400 and increment 1 time per part number that is inserted. how can i accomplished that task.
EXAMPLE:
IDX PART#
400 abcde 401 fghi 402 jklm
etc. and so forth until the last part# will have IDX 1200...
Hi There,I want to create a column that usto numbers upto a specified value, and the resets. I've tried using the identity column and then using DBCC CHECKIDENT, but this doesnt doesn't have the desired affect. Here's an example of what I'm after.AutoRow1234 -------- reset1234 --------resetAny help would be great, many thanksStuart
Hello, I have a table (publication) that has a primary key pubID which is an identity specification. This ID already has relationships to other tables. I am having problems trying to make one of the other columns in the same table to auto generate. This column (bibNumber) is not related to any other table. All i want to do is when i create a new record in the table, auto generate a number for this column bibNumber. How can i do this? I am using sql server express 2005 Regards
As part of auditing of our application, I want to write the values of all column in one row out to an audit table both before and after an update to see what the changes were.
I know I can SELECT * FROM tableName FOR XML AUTO to generate a single XML 'column', but I cannot figure out how to capture that output and store it.
According to MS, you cannot use FOR XML in a subselect, or fill a TEXT variable with the results of such (which, IMHO really diminishes the usefulness).
I want to stream out the results of one entire row and store that in ONE column of an audit table. XML seems like the easiest way if not for this limitation.
Hi, I have an auto incrementing int column setup which serves as my unique primary key. Just wondering what happens when the auto increment reaches the limit? Will it recycle numbers from the begining (who's rows have obviously been deleted by this stage)?
create table RECORD ( ID int not null, Issue_descr varchar(256) not null, Priority varchar(5) not null, Status varchar(12) not null, Date_add varchar(10) not null, Date_due varchar(10) not null, Date_complete varchar(10), PName varchar(32), primary key(ID), foreign key(PName) references PROJECT(PName) );
and
Code:
create table STEPS ( ID int not null, Num int not null, Descr varchar(256), Date_due varchar(10) not null, Date_complete varchar(10), Status varchar(12), primary key(ID, Num), foreign key(ID) references RECORD(ID) );
I have set PK "ID" in table RECORD to auto identity(1,1). I have done the same for PK "num" in table STEPS. However I am seeking this behavior in STEPS: ID num -- ---- 19 1 19 2 19 3 20 1 20 2 21 1
but what I'm getting is PK num doesn't "reseed" or reset to 1 as "ID" changes. PK num just auto-increments regardless of ID. Is there a workaround?
i've posted in the wrong forum, so im posting here
hi, im having problems to import data from my excel to a sql table.
in the excel file i have exact the same fields that i have in the table excepts the primary key which is an auto increment. When i try to import data, an error that i can't insert nulls into my auto increment column.
I put enable identity insert in the edit options, but still doesnt work.
I'm a bit new to SQL Server, but here is the problem I am trying to getaround:1. I have lets say an Employee table where the emp_id is an identitycolumn that is auto assigned by the db.2. I wish to insert values into the tables, but sometimes I may wish touse the value of the emp_id that i supply while inserting (andsometimes not).Is there any way in MS SQL to do this? For e.g. is it setup like aconstraint that I can temporarily drop. I do not want to alter thetable, so that option is ruled out.Any other ways to do this (I know bcp is one of them that allows me todo this, but looking for ways in the db itself using SQL if possible)Thanks,Bharat
I am migrating a web application I wrote from ASP to ASP.Net, and fromAccess to MS SQL server. In the Access version, I did not use the auto number for creatinginvoices and other documents, because I heard somewhere (perhapsincorrectly) that if the db was ever compacted or otherwise changed,it could change the values of the auto-numbers. Not a good thing. So I wrote a routine that, just before creating a new record, wouldlook for the highest value in the table and create the new record withthe next number. So my question is, am I safe in assuming that in MS SQL that I can seta starting number for the next, let's say, invoice and that newnumbers will be issued in sequence, and that these numbers will neverchange? What happens if an invoice is deleted? is the number goneforever? Just wondering how others deal with these issues...thanks.Larry- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -"Forget it, Jake. It's Chinatown."
I have a sql sever 2005 express table with an automatically incremented primary key field. I use a Detailsview to insert new records and on the Detailsview itemInserted event, i send out automated notification emails. I then received two automated emails(indicating two records have been inserted) but looking at the database, the records are not there. Whats confusing me is that even the tables primary key field had been incremented by two, an indication that indeed the two records should actually be in table. Recovering these records is not abig deal because i can re-enter them but iam wondering what the possible cause is. How come the id field was even incremented and the records are not there yet iam 100% sure no one deleted them. Its only me who can delete a record. And then how come i insert new records now and they are all there in the database but now with two id numbers for those missing records skipped. Its not crucial data but for my learning, i feel i deserve understanding why it happened because next time, it might be costly.
Along with the data that I am pulling back from query, I also need to provide an ImportID column with the following requirements:
YYMMDDGP0001, YYMMDDGP0002, YYMMDDGP0003, and so on. The 0001, 0002, and 0003 part could get big into the hundreds of thousands.
I have the YYMMDDGP part down with the following expression:
SELECT CONVERT(VARCHAR(6), GETDATE(), 12) + 'GP' AS [ImportID]
Now I need to get the Auto Incrementing number part of this. I have been researching this trying SELECT INTO a temp table using the Identity Function and declaring different variables all with no luck.
My question: Is it okay to drop all the auto generated column statistics? (for the following scenario)
- I am cleaning up unnecessary objects (tables, unused indexes, overlapping statistics etc) from databases and found out there are more than 1400 auto generated column statistics on one database (lets call it A). - Database A was used to be our reporting database but from last several years we are using database B for reporting. DB A has all the historical data while DB B only has valid records. - We are updating all the column statistics with full scan nightly on database A and it is talking almost 2.5 hours to do that. Now I want to drop all the "unnecessary" statistics those were created when DB A was reporting database and they are no longer in use. There is no way to know the creation date of the column statistics that I know of. Statistics "last update date" is of no use because of our nightly job. So I was thinking of dropping all the auto generated column statistics and let the sql server create as it needs from now.
If you use a component that has a column mapping tab (most do) then you know that the component will try and map input and output columns automatically by name.
Is there a way to disable this feature when writing your own custom components? There is already a manual way to do this: rightmouse in the mappings tab of a component and chosen "Map Items By Matching Names". I find it is less helpful to auto-map initially because the designer tends to not think about the mappings.
A way of turning of auto-mapping in existing components would be cool too!
Hello all,I'm using SS2K on W2k.I'v got a table say, humm, "Orders" with two fields in the PK:OrderDate and CustomerID. I would like to add an "ID" column whichwould be auto-increment (and would be the new PK). But, I would reallylike to have orders with the oldest OrderDate having the smallest IDnumber and, for a same OrderDate, I'd to have the smallest CustomerIDfirst. So my question is:How could I add an auto-increment column to a table and make it createits values in a particular order (sort by OrderDate then CustomerIDhere)? In the real situation, the table I want to modify has around 500krecords and the PK has 5 fields and I want to sort on three of them. Thanks for you helpYannick
Due to localization I have the need to make child tables, where there is a composite Primary Key, between the Id column and the LanguageSign column. On the parent table the Id column is Identity column with auto increment.
The problem is that during the select into query to copy columns from parent to child, this auto increment behaviour of the parent-Id is copied to the child-Id. However I do not want that, because the same Id will be used by different LanguageSign entries
Is there a way to use 'select into' without copying the auto increment, or is my only option to make a whole new column without auto increment on the child and copy the records?
btw I have used this statement
SET IDENTITY_INSERT MyTable
ON , so that inserting into the Id column is possible. I can see however that this does not take away the auto increment...
i would to make a column contains of 3 characters and 6 auto increment numbers (example: "DLL - 123456")
and made it primary key and which data type i should use. i do not know whether i use after insert trigger in two columns one for three characters and another for code which has identity property >>>so please help me
