Automating Taking Data From Sql Server 2000 Onto Excel 2003 Spreasheet
Jun 18, 2007
I would like to know recommendations on automate the following:
1. I want to know how to take data from various sql server 2000 data queries and load the data onto excel spreadsheets in an automated method. Some of the data loaded into the excel spreadsheets load detail data and some load data into pivot tables.
Is there any way that the data can be taken from sql server to the excel spreadsheets using odbc connections?
2. Some of the data taken from sql server 2000 database is loaded into pdf files. Is there any way this process can be automated?
Thanks!

Hi,
I need to import an SQL string from MS Excel 2003 to SQL SERVER 2000.
The string I need to import is composed by 5 different several blocks and looks like:
Code Snippet
CommandLine01 = "USE mydb"
CommandLine02 = "SELECT Block ..."
CommandLine03 = "GO
ALTER TABLE Block...
GO"
CommandLine04 = "UPDATE Block..."
CommandLine05 = "SELECT Block..."
The detail of the SQL string is at:
http://forums.microsoft.com/msdn/showpost.aspx?postid=2093921&siteid=1&sb=0&d=1&at=7&ft=11&tf=0&pageid=1
I am trying to implement OJ's suggestion:
http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2117223&SiteID=1
to use multi - batch processing to import the string to SQL SERVER, something like:
Code Snippet
Dim SqlCnt, cmd1, cmd2, cmd3
'set the properties and open a connection
cmd1="use my_db"
cmd2="create table mytb"
cmd3="insert into mytb"
SqlCnt.execute cmd1
SqlCnt.Execute cmd2
SqlCnt.Execute cmd3
Below is the code (just partial) I have, and I need help to complete it.
Thanks in advance,
Aldo.
Code Snippet
Function TestConnection()
Dim ConnectionString As New ADODB.Connection
Dim RecordSet As New ADODB.RecordSet
ConnectionString = "Driver={SQL Server};Server=myServer;Database=myDBName;Uid=UserName;Pwd=Password"
ConnectionString.Open
CmdLine01 = " USE " & myDB
CmdLine02 = " SELECT ACCOUNTS.FULLNAME FROM ACCOUNTS" ...
CmdLine03 = "GO
ALTER TABLE Block...
GO"
CmdLine04 = "UPDATE Block..."
CmdLine05 = "SELECT Block..."
RecordSet.Open CmdLine01, ConnectionString
RecordSet.Open CmdLine02, ConnectionString
ConnectionString.Execute CmdLine01
ConnectionString.Execute CmdLine02
'Retrieve Field titles
For ColNr = 1 To RecordSet.Fields.Count
ActiveSheet.Cells(1, ColNr).Value = RecordSet.Fields(ColNr - 1).Name
Next
ActiveSheet.Cells(2, 1).CopyFromRecordset RecordSet
'Close ADO objects
RecordSet.Close
ConnectionString.Close
Set RecordSet = Nothing
Set ConnectionString = Nothing
End Function

Hi guys,
When I thought everything is okay with this script, I got a new problem...
I have a VBA's script from Excel 2003 that builds sql script and retrieves data from SQL SERVER 2000.
in order to make the sql running, I need to use a multi - batch processing, to pass and execute every command line once a time.
Up to here, I am using a test case with Account number = '123456' and getting the desire results.
The code below is running okay with the test case, but when changing the account number (mark as yellow in the code) to include all the accounts (or just one other account), I am getting the following ERROR:
run - time error '-2147217871 (80040e31)' - [Microsoft] [ODBC SQL Server Driver] time out expired.
Now, if I take the same code, with the condition that generates the ERROR, and try it into SQL Server, I get the results without errors.
Thanks in advance,
Aldo.
Below the code:
Code Snippet
Function QuerySalesAging()

Hi all. I want to export data from excel 2003 to sql server 2005. I am using the following script:
EXEC sp_configure 'show advanced options', 1;
GO
RECONFIGURE;
GO
EXEC sp_configure 'Ad Hoc Distributed Queries', 1;
GO
RECONFIGURE;
GO
Insert into Pamphlet
Select * FROM OPENROWSET('Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0',
'Excel 8.0;Database=C:Pamphlet.xls;HDR=YES', 'SELECT * FROM [Sheet3$]')
But it is giving the following error:
Msg 7399, Level 16, State 1, Line 2
The OLE DB provider "Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0" for linked server "(null)" reported an error. The provider did not give any information about the error.
Msg 7303, Level 16, State 1, Line 2
Cannot initialize the data source object of OLE DB provider "Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0" for linked server "(null)".
The above script is working fine with Excel 2002 but not with 2003. Can someone please provide me exact script of importing data from excel 2003 to sql server 2005. I have also tried the Linked server option but it is still giving the same error.
Please help me.

Hi ,
I have one problem regarding format of mixed data columns in excel. I am using this query to retieve data from my excel spreadsheet
Select * from OPENROWSET('Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0',
'Excel 8.0;IMEX=1;IHDR=yes;Database=E: est.xls;HDR=YES',
'SELECT * FROM [original$]')
to retrieve data from excel sheet.
I am able to retreive all data (numaric and text) , but for few cells I am getting wrong values.
like this
15106749310-> 1.51067e+010
70400672657-> 7.04007e+010
48110753143-> 4.81108e+010
registry setting are €œtext and 0€³. I am also using IMEX=1 in connection string.
I have numeric and text data both in same column,
eg:
70400503549
70400672657
KF1080420908
KF1260370908
KF1260880908
KF1260960908
Could you please help me to get the correct value from excel .
thanks in advance ,

Hi guys,
I figure this should not be a complex one. I know how to manually pull in data from Oracle 9i into SQL Server 2000 using DTS. However this is my issue.....
I simply want to automate the pulling in of data from 1 table in my ORACLE 9i database into another table in my Sql Server 200. I was hoping I could simple write a stored procedure that would sort of utilize a dblink like in ORACLE and then schedule that procedure. Is this feasible in Sql Server, and how would one go about setting this automated import up????
Thanks in Advance all............

I am running SQL Server 2000 on a desktop PC. Just recently upgraded my PC to 2gig of ram from 1 gig, in part, to try and fix the problem below. Didn't work. Have SP3 installed but not SP4 at this point.
When I open up query analyzer and edit some code, regardless of whether I actually execute the code, SQL server eventually sucks up available and cached memory to the point that my system comes to an effective halt --takes forever to do anything either in SQL server or other applications. In the task manager PF Usage climbs to just over the 2gig memory limit.
I conceptually understand the dynamic memory operation of SQL server ... but why is it sucking up most available memory when nothing is executing?
Is there a way I can release/clear the memory? Ideally, code that coould be run under a stored procedure would best meet my needs. Right now, I am "fixing" by shutting down and then restarting SQL server.
Thanks,

Hi,
I am able to do these actions interactively from SQL 2005 (not developers nor enterprise edition, just using SQL 2005 Mgmt Studio) and want to "script/batch" them so I can have them automatically run at a pre selected time.
First: I am able to delete the table by performing a right click on the table, then click Delete from Mgmt Studio SQL 2005. I verify the table is completely gone with a refresh. (I pulled the code that did this ..... DROP TABLE etc. to Notepad)
2nd: I am able to import the table (again from Mgmt Studio SQL 2005) and have saved this action as a SSIS. Execute the script and "waLa" I have all 17K rows of data. I pulled this create table code into notepad also.
Now I put the code of both of the above actions together (drop table and create table) into one SQL query and execute it. This does not give me the same results of above, instead my table is blank now.
Maybe there is a better way. The business problem I am attempting to solve: I am refreshing the data in a as/400 table weekly. I want that refreshed data to be available in the SQL2005 database without my having to press buttons first thing Monday morning. Can any one help? Thanks in advance.

Hi Folks:
We´ve migrated from SQL Server 7.0 EE to SQL Server 2000 in a 8processors, 8 GB RAM server, using W2000.
All seems go ok, but after reorganizing indexes, when we want to recover free space in the differents files using DBCC SHRINKFILE, that recovers are taking the triple of time than with previous SQL Server 7.0.
Shrinking big files (6GB to recover 1.5 GB), previously taking 3 hours now are needing 9 hours.
Any suggestion or help will be appreciated.
Best Regards.

I'm in the middle of developing a Database for a hospital that measures its audits, inhouse operations, and finance. What we currently have and do everyday is collect data from a large database that is real time with patient data, progess, infomation, etc and dump it into a data warehouse that runs on TSI/Eclipsys. We run reports using a number of programs and dump it into Excel sheets that have charts, reports, etc. This Database for which I'm developing won't come soley from the TSI/Eclypsys source, but this is the only source thats updated regularly. I don't want to have in sync with TSI/Eclipysys in fear that every day when it updates data may be lost, not read, or worse won't be up date if there is a problem. My question is is it possible to run a query from Sequel Server 2005 that will take that data upon request using the reporing features on Sequel Server 2005. i.e. What if I need to run a report on measure B in department 12 from Jan 1-Feb 1, instead of being in sync, can I just write queries to take that information rather than double the data and take up twice the space and trouble. FYI, these datatypes rarely change in the TSI/Eclipsys data warehouse. This sure was long question and didn't intended it to be . Thanks for listening and hope to hear back.

I've seen the code to import cells and ranges into sql server, but can't seem to remember what it is anymore. I've also searched through the forums and can't seem to find any examples either. Could anyone post an example or a link with some examples or explaination code. Thanks in advance.

Hola
We are getting symptoms of a 30 second timeout irrespective of what we do, but only on certain machines. Can anyone shed any light on how the connection timeout can be set, as there seems to be a factor overiding any settings we set?
We are working in Excel (2003) connecting to an Analysis Services 2005 cube through a website https://Datasource connection. When we edit the connection string that the file is using (either by forcing use of an exterior .ODC file and editing the settings in there, or by converting the xls spreadsheet into an xml spreadsheet and manually editing the connection string in there) we get no joy: after 30 seconds the error appears:
"Either a connection cannot be made to the [my server address], or Analysis services is not running on the computer specified".
This error is itself rubbish: If a smaller query (one that takes < 30 seconds) is run in the same Excel file and Pivot Table, it connects fine.
What really doesn't make sense is that the exact same file works on some machines and not others. These machines are all inside the same network (and the machines that work have been proven to work on a number of other networks). What's more there is no pattern to the machine capabilities - some newer / faster machines get the error. These machines (that work and do not) have excel 2003 SP3. (Another of the ones that works has Excel 2007).
Changing the connection string to include "Timeout=300" or "Connect Timeout=300" makes no difference, and "Command Timeout" causes a different error so that it wont even attempt to run the query (as opposed to collapsing after 30 seconds of normal progress).
Similarly in the .ODV the tags <ODC:CommandTimeout>, <CommandTimeout>, <ODC:Connect Timeout>, <ODC:Command Timeout>, <meta name=CommandTimeout content=1000> etc. have no effect (the file still gets the 30 seconds error rather than just giving up so no way of working out correct syntax)
The only pattern we can see, and we can't fix this, is that the machines that work have Retail versions of excel, and the ones that do not have corporately licensed versions of excel. We cannot see any difference between them in the Help >Abouts, but thought it might be worth mentioning.
Any help would be fantastically appreciated, we are out of ideas.
Thanks kindly
Amundo

Hello there,
We got SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition SP3 running on Windows 2003 server.
Now, we would like to apply windows 2003 SP1 to the Operating System.
We are concerned that whether windows 2003 SP1 is compatible with SQL server 2000 (SP3)?
I was looking at the application comaptibility chart for Windows 2003 SP1.Among them SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition Service Pack 3a was listed but not the Standard Edition.
My Question - Is windows 2003 server SP1 is compatible with SQL Server 2000 (SP3)?

Hi,
I am having a problem connecting my .net applications from the application server to the database server. When I run the application from my windows xp (sp2) box it works fine. When I try to connect via SQL Management Studio to the database server from the application server I get the same error.
Here is the error:
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)
Here is the Environment:
App Server:
Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition
Inside Company's Firewall/ Network
Database Server:
Windows Server 2000 Advanced Edition
SQL Server 2000 SP4
Remote Connections to the Server is checked
Enable Protocols: Named Pipes & TCP/IP
TCP/IP Port: 1402 (I don't know why it isn't the default of 1433)
The db server is sitting out side the Company's firewall (don't ask me why). I can access it fine from inside the firewall on my XP box but not from windows server 2003. There is a web server outside the our network that also connects to the db server with no problem and that is running Windows Server 2003 Web Edition.
I can ping the db server from the app server using the IP address.
I tried using the IP address and the port 1402 in my connection string but that didn't work from any machine (XP and Server).
I imagine the issue is somehow related to the company's firewall but why would it only block Windows Server 2003 and not XP?
What do I tell the network admin to change?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Oran

We have a project already developed iusing VS 2003 Enterprise architect edition using sql server 2000(have lots of table and stored procs etc.)
Now planning to switch to Sql server 2005 are there any issues associated with the switch.
I mean front end programming wise asp.net and vb.net front end codes do they work straight away or need to make any changes to all the front end codes, we are using datasets, data readers calling stored procs and also using lot of hash tables and XML object to make bulk loads to sql server via sqlxml3.0 sp3.
Please help thank you very much for the information.

Hi all,I just asked some people to help me out and phone microsoft with thefollowing information, kindly they refused unless we setup a supportcontract with them first, for pre-sales information. (That really doesnot sound like good business sense to me - anyway here is our problem,if anyone could help thanks)."To tell and ask microsoft:We will be setting up a microsoft sql server 2000 instance running on awindows 2003 server.1) We need to check this can run alongside a microsoft 2003 sql server(either workgroup or standard edition), on the same machine. Are thereany .dll clashes if we do this? If there are can we run SQL Server2000, in a virtual machine running windows 2000 professional. (I have alicenced copy we can use for this).2) If we run one instance of 2000, and one of 2003 of the sql servers,can one use the processor licence model, and one use the CAL licencemodel."Thanks for any help, and any idea why they actually force you to usenews groups for pre-sales information?David
