Back Everything Up In A Single File?

Jul 20, 2005

Greetings,

Our former SQL Server 2000 DBA backed up everything in a single disk
file. By everything I mean, full backup, differential backup and
transaction logs. See below for details of how the backup is currently
set up. When I did 'view contents' of DBBackup, I saw it contained the
mixture of log, full and diff backups of verious dates. She has quit.
Other coworkers said (in a not-sure tone) she was able to restore the
databases from such a single file, although nobody ever saw or knew how
she did recovery. My knowledge about SQL Server, especially regarding
its backup/restore is limited. But I've ever worked with other
databases, e.g. Oracle, MySQL and Postgres. I think log backups, full
backups and differential backups should be completely separated. Also,
in each type of backups, each database should have its own backup file.
Please advise.

=====
Log backup:

CREATE PROCEDURE sp_lbackup AS
Backup log AGEP To DBBackup
Backup log careerfairs To DBBackup
Backup log CoEdocuments To DBBackup
Backup log committee To DBBackup
Backup log conference To DBBackup
GO

Full backup:

CREATE PROCEDURE dbo.sp_fullbackup AS
Backup database AGEP To DBBackup WITH INIT
Backup database CoEdocuments To DBBackup
Backup database careerfairs To DBBackup
Backup database committee To DBBackup
Backup database conference To DBBackup
GO

Diff backup:

CREATE PROCEDURE sp_diffbackup AS
Backup database AGEP To DBBackup with differential
Backup database careerfairs To DBBackup with differential
Backup database CoEdocuments To DBBackup with differential
Backup database committee To DBBackup with differential
Backup database conference To DBBackup with differential
GO

Thanks in advance for any help,

Having Difficulty Setting Back Up To Back Up File Wihout Datetime Stamp SQL 2K

Apr 24, 2007

Hello,I'm trying to create a simple back up in the SQL Maintenance Plan that willmake a single back up copy of all database every night at 10 pm. I'd likethe previous nights file to be overwritten, so there will be only a singleback up file for each database (tape back up runs every night, so each daysback up will be saved on tape).Every night the maintenance plan makes a back up of all the databases to anew file with a datetime stamp, meaning the previous nights file stillexists. Even when I check "Remove files older than 22 hours" the previousnights file still exists. Is there any way to create a back up file withoutthe date time stamp so it overwrites the previous nights file? Thanks!Rick

Set Database Back To Multi User From Single User

Feb 27, 2008

I am using SharePoint Services 3.0 (SP1) with default configuration options, which installs the Microsoft##SSEE instance of SQL to my local C: drive.

While attempting to relocate the files to another drive, I set one of the databases (as recommended) to Single User by using the SQL Server Management Express tool.

I cannot now reset that database to Multi User, even by executing the query

exec sp_dboption 'database_name', 'single user', ''FALSE'

again by using the Management Express Tool.

Can someone please help, in plain english???? Thanks

Is There A Way To Control How Profiler Plays Back A File

Feb 12, 2003

I have been saving a trace file while entering orders into a new vendor application. I can replay the files just fine and everything works. My question is that I am trapping ten minutes worth of orders that are entered. However when profiler replays the trace it runs through in about a minute. I was trying to get a realistic a load approach as I can, and was wondering if there is a way to conrol how fat profiler runs the file trace. I put in 20 orders during this 10 minutes, in the real world no one could put the 20 orders into the system in a minute. Any ideas (and no,purchasing a real load testing program is not an option)

How To Verify The Integrity Of A Back-up File Prior To Restore?

Mar 22, 2007

Hello,

I have some C# (.NET 2.0) code that performs back-ups and also can perform restores of back-up files. I would like to validate the integrity of a file prior to initiating a restore operation. In other words, I want to know, before I try to restore, if the file is just a random file (picture, work doc, zipped backup, etc.) or if it is a valid SQL backup file.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

SQL Server 2012 :: View To Concatenate File / Path Names Back To Root Directory?

Sep 25, 2014

We have a hierarchical table of some 2-3k of rows that grows slowly at only 3-5 rows a month, and is never likely to be above 5k, holding file/directory names with an IdParent int value pointing at that items immediate parent or NULL if root

Below is a sample:

Id Name IdParent
1 C: NULL
2 D: NULL
3 ProgramFiles 1
4 DataFiles 2
5 Excel.EXE 3
6 MyDataList.CSV 4

iterative code required to achieve the result I am looking for is best handled in the Application layer, but in this case the design brief is that we must get our results back as a View. Speed of execution and code clarity are secondary 'icing on the cake' issues.

I have tried recursive CTE's and XML FOR solutions but without success, and while I feel the latter is probably the best all rounder the searches I have made and the examples I have read do not seem to solve this particular issue.

Even to find the starting point of the search tree (i.e. the .EXE and the .CSV items) was difficult because the final slash is optional in some of the rows (.e. row 4)

The end result of my view on the above data should return:

Id FilePath
5 C:ProgramFilesExcel.EXE
6 D:DataFilesMyDataList.CSV (note the adding of the missing delimiter between DataFiles and MyDataList)

Move Report File From Reporting Server Back To Local Visual Studio Project

Apr 4, 2008

I am not sure if this is possible or not, but I have to at least ask.

I have a SQL Reporting Services project that has a QA server version and then a Production server version. So when requested changes are made to the reports, I make the changes in Visual Studio and then push to QA. After the changes have been tested and approved, I then push the changes to the Production server.

I have come across an issue, where requested changes were made in Visual Studio (a lot of changes), and pushed to QA. The users now have changed their minds and they want instead to stay with what is in production. So, I am looking for a way to recover the report file on the production web server, bring it back into my visual studio project to replace the report that I had changed.

Is this possible, or will I have to start over and step one and reverse the changes in Visual Studio.

Let me know.

Thank you,

T.J.

Exporting Multiple Tables To A Single File

Oct 1, 2004

I need to export data from multiple tables into one single file. The big problem here is that the tables will have different column types.

I am attempting to create something that allows users to be able to send me the contents of their tables's, through either email or ftp. I would prefer to make it easier for them so they only have to deal with one file, instead of the multiple files that bcp and dts create when exporting from multiple tables.

I was thinking of using DTS or BCP and then join (append) the files (either zip them or append the files together in some fashion), but I was hoping that there was an easier method out there.

Any ideas on how I may accomplish this would be greatly appreciated.

Deleting Expired Backupsets From Single .BAK File

May 28, 2008

Hi,

I'm new to SQL Server 2005 (up until now I've been an Oracle DBA exclusively) and have been tasked with backing up all (6) of our SQL Server 2005 databases on a regular basis. To accomplish this, I've created individual SQL Server jobs for each database I wish to backup. Each of these jobs executes a T-SQL script like this:

BACKUP DATABASE [MYDATA] TO DISK = N'\networksharemydata.bak' WITH RETAINDAYS = 4,
NOFORMAT,
NOINIT,
NAME = N'MyData-FullBackup',
SKIP,
NOREWIND,
NOUNLOAD,
STATS = 10
GO

My goal in specifying 'RETAINDAYS = 4' was so that there would always be 4 days worth of "backupsets" (forgive my Oracle-ese) kept in mydata.bak. But when I look at the amount of backupsets kept in mydata.bak I noticed that all of them were being kept and none were being deleted.

I researched this problem a little bit and thought I had discovered a solution by specifying 'INIT' instead of 'NOINIT' and 'NOSKIP' instead of 'SKIP', but this deletes the entire contents of mydata.bak only-if all of the backupsets contained in it are past their expiration date. I was hoping it would just delete the expired backupsets and keep the non-expired ones, but this isn't the case.

Does anyone know the simplest way - with T-SQL commands - to accmplish the task of backing up a database to 1 individual .bak file and also only retain x amount of "backupsets" within it? Any help would be greatly appreciated, and the more detailed the better. Thanks.

Single Config File Across Multiple Packages

Dec 21, 2005

I've read that a single config file can be used across multiple packages, but am unsure if it applies to what I'm trying to achieve. As an example, I have 2 packages, PackageA and PackageB. Each package has a connection manager defined - ManagerA and ManagerB and I want a single package configuration file to contain the connection string for each manager.

I can define the package configuration of PackageA with no problems. I choose XML file, define the filename and add the connection string to the config.

I then open PackageB Package Configuration and point it to the existing config file, IS tells me the file already exists and allows me to choose the option to "Reuse Existing". I then supply a configuration name and the wizard finishes, without letting me expose any properties. At this point, the configuration file still contains config details from PackageA.

If I then choose to Edit the package configuration in PackageB, I get a warning saying the config values in the config file (relating to PackageA) cannot be found, and the wizard continues. The subsequent PackageB properties which I add overwrite the existing PackageA properties.

So it would appear that what I'm trying to do cannot be done, and I need a separate configuration file for each package?

Any ideas much appreciated.

Greg.

How To Merge Report Output Into Single File?

Mar 14, 2008

Hi

I have read a few other posts about how to merge multiple report output files into a single document e.g. a single pdf.
There are a few approaches:
1) Generate post script files and then merge and oprint via a post script driver.
2) Generate seperate pdf files and then merge them into single document using a custom library.

I have a third idea and would appreciate any input:

Dynamically generate a RDL file that contains sub-reports, one for each report required in the final document, publish and run this as the final report. This could happen way before actually running the report i.e. the user has a tool where they select reports for a pack, tool then generates new RDL file and publishes it to sql reporting services, gets run at some later point in time.

Some challenges:
-Generate a table of contents with page numbering?
-Layout of sub-reports, not sure how they would be rendered across multiple pages?
-Managing parametes across sub-reports at run time.

Any suggestions or ideas?

Thanks
