Im about to start a project that will be hosted by a third party web host. What is a common way to backup your database and have the backup saved ? The data may end up being several 100 MB of user settings, text etc (blog type stuff). If the DB gets to be several 100MB, then does making a backup and ftping it offsite sound reasonable ? Does ftp bandwidth usually count against your overall bandwidth usage ?
Sorry if this is elementary, but I have searched and cannot find an answer. I have a backup file of a sql server 2000 database. I want to restore it to a remote hosted sql server 2005. Using sql server management studio, it seems to me that I cannot access the files stored local on my computer. Does anybody have a solution? What is the best way to deploy my backup file to the remote server? Thanks for any suggestions!
Dear all,I'd like to explore more about indexing strategies and would appreciatea reference to some good resources this regard including book names.Best regards
hello, what are the strategies when designing tables that needspaging?in the past i used to useselect top 200 * from tablewhere id not in (select top 100 id from table)with SQL 2005, would u guys recommend using CTE and/or ROW_NUMBER?or any other advice?thanks
I have been somewhat dismayed by the lack of information available relative to testing SSIS solutions. At a time when both managed code and db code are getting tooling (through VSTS) to help drive an automated testing mentality into developers everywhere - there seems to be little out there for those using SSIS. I have seen people talk about having SSIS packages that test the actual packages - there is always the manual way to write the tests in something like C# and then programmatically invoke the package and manually validate the results. Anyone out there have approaches that are working for them?
I posted a question yesterday (http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1717961&SiteID=1) that was very specific concerning problems running WCF inside SQL. I guess its quite unlikely that anyone will have had the same problem so I'd like to ask a more general question.
What is it that is different about running a .Net method contained in an UNSAFE assembly inside SQL than running it from a console application or mstest?
One difference is the identity (typically NT Authority/System) but I've discounted that by temporarily running SQLSvr under my interaction administrator account.
One gets a lot of warnings when importing system assemblies into SQL about them not being tested but is there much different about the execution environment.
I guess one difference is the assembly loading subsystem - not fusion in SQL's case. One can't access assemblies in the GAC or in probing paths. Any other differences that might give me a clue as to why I can't get my WCF channel to work?
I'm trying to flesh out a good queue table design with our dev team.So here is a general overview of the scenario. First an application will hit a WebAPI and grab any updates to Content and store those ID's in SQL (queue table). Next is the fun part, different multi threaded apps will process ID's from the queue. One app will make updates to the data in a different SQL DB while the other will update an index (likely Elastic).
Obviously, we don't want multiple threads working on the same items. One strategy could be to use UPDLOCK & READPAST query hints. However, I'm not sure about the reliability or performance of this solution. I just started looking into setting up a service broker but that would be completely unfamiliar territory for me. Also I can see how a broker might work well within the instance but how would that work with the application making updates to Elastic?
I am looking for some published paper regarding database performancetunning performance strategies. This is for academic purpose so itneeds not to be any commerical database specific. It will be evenbetter if the paper has some kind of methods to quantify/measureperformance. Has anyone come across with any interesting paper aboutthis? Thanks, ewong
There is a great book on database refactoring that contains a comprehensive set or recipies on how to revise databases that are supposed to be always online and may have various clients that can't be upgraded at the same time. I guess this is a typical case with large databases and I would be surpised if Amazon stops their servers just to move a column from one table to another. The book describes necessary steps for such changes. Basically it's all about creating intermediate database schemas that would be used during transition period.
For example, if we need to move a column from one table to another:
Version 1. Table A columns: Name, Price Table B columns: Quantity, Date
Let's say we move Price to table B:
Version 2. Table A columns: Name Table B columns: Quantity, Date, Price
The book suggests an intermediate version:
Version 1_2. Table A columns: Name, Price Table B columns: Quantity, Date, Price Additional trigger that will synchronize "Price" columns between A and B.
Version 1_2 can be used by both clients written for version 1 and 2. Software developers don't need to rush their upgrades, transition can last months and include several changes.
This technique requires accuracy in version control management, but looks very good to implement non-interruptible database schema upgrade. I wonder if this is the only option available for data schema upgrade with no downtime. I can't think about anything else - it this how large data warehouses updata their databases?
I have SQL Server 7.0 installed on a shared disk resource in a cluster group. I am wanting to use Outlook 98 ( 97 or 2000 will also be fine if it matters) for the mail profile. Do I install Outlook on the local server drive and reference that in SQL Mail or do I install Outlook on the shared resource drive and reference it there? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Hi all, I think I have the right group, if I don't then I doapologize. My problem is that I'm trying to run a SQL script within a VBEnvironment. The actual program is WISE Installer, but I'm sure thatthe same problem arise within VB because we have also wrote an appthat is meant to run SQL scripts (But falls over the same). Basically, there are some SQL keywords that are Query Analyser only.. ie: GODoes anyone know of a list of Query only statements? The code belowfails, but since it's not as verbose as Query, all I'm getting is'INCORRECT SYNTAX NEAR THE KEYWORD "PROCEDURE". Here's what's aroundit:^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ More stuff aboveSET ANSI_NULLS OFFCREATE PROCEDURE ASP_OutstandingStaffingRequirements@stDate as datetime, @enDate as datetime, @locId as integer,@gradeCount as IntegerASCreate Table #glb_outshifts^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ More stuff below.Any help would be great as I'm banging my head against the wall here.BTW.. I don't actually know what the SQL script does, I'm just tryingto package together a deployment solution. Many Many Thanks. Regards Mark (SQL GURU.. LOL)
I have SQL 2005 database mirrror enviroment with MS jdbc driver 1.1. From code, I need to get server name that current connection connect to at run time (which server that the current connection connect to: Priciple server or mirror server). Any help for that?
I have been made the point person for our migration to SQL2005. We are a law firm with approximately 750 users. The first SQL environment we will be upgrading is our document management system (DMS). This is an intensive SQL product. After this migration we will more of to our finical system, records system and then all home grown databases.
What we would like to do is consolidate servers and scale out the new SQL environment to a farm. After some initial research it does not look like we will be able to scale out, since the data in the DMS is always changing.
Does anyone have some advice or guidance on what direction we should be looking? I have done tons a online searches and can find out information on everything to do with SQL, except this.
I was wondering what was the limitations of Sql Server 2005 standard w/ 1 calThis is the version that is given out at the launch events. We are currently developing a site, that will use Sql Databases and was wondering if the version we have now will work.Like we know for a fact that the site will recieve a decent amount of traffic. Is standard limited to certain kind of sites and so forth? Thanks,Cedric
I need to upgrade a solution from SQL Express Advanced to Workgroup Edition because of the 4GB size limit. I'm planning on deploying the solution in an secure web enviroment were only authenticated users will be able to access the database. The actual username's and passwords would be stored in an Express database. Therefore since only named users would be accessing the database server web app, can I use the CAL license model??
I used 3 seperate web.config files - one for Development seerver, one for Certification server, and one for Production server. The only difference between these three is the within the <connectionStrings> tags. For Example: <connectionStrings><add name="strConn" connectionString="server=xxx;uid=xxxx;pwd=xxxxx;database=yyy;"/></connectionStrings> Within Development the connectionString points to the Development SQL server, Cert to cert SQL, and Prod to Prod SQL. I do not have permissions to copy new Web.Config files into Cert or Prod, so when I have a change within my web.config I have to have another group manually add these files. Is there a way to identify the domain I am curernt within and use a specific set of connections string within the web.config based off this information. If so, can anyone post an example of how to do this...
i have installed SQLEXPRESS (SQL Server 9.0.3042) on my windows ultimate laptop. of late am facing this issue of database. this database is from SQl 7.0 Desktop edition(the one that i use in my office machine with Xp SP2). As such it works fine in SQL 2000 server after attachment (for test).
i have run SQLEXPRESS as administrator to make/attach new database. i can attach the database easily and can even view tables and other stuffs inside database in administrator mode. the issue pops up when i run SQLEXPRESS in normal mode. when i try to open and view the same DB's content, error pops up stating
"The database XXX is not accessible. (Micorosoft.sqlserver.express.objectExplorer)"
i cannot access this DB via VB 6 form as it dosnt show up at all in database list when tried to connect via ADODC.
i want to make this DB accessibility as normal operation, not previliged only to administrator as application run on normal mode only.
the issue dosnt arise when i locally make a new database as it can be accessed when run in normal mode also. why does this happen to database that is attached and not to ones locally made.
pls guide me as i usually do my works at home and making whole database again will surely take lots of pain. why not it just attach then start working, not asking for preveliged mode.
I believe it is possible to restore databases from Enterprise edition to an enviroment with Standard edition. We have been able to do it on databases without any partitioned tables. But if a database has partitioned tables it will not start up in the Standard edition after a successful restore. The error log states that the database will not start because partitions are not allowed in Standard edition (which we knew). But we were led to believe that the databases would restore and open fine, the partitions would just not be there in Standard edition. Are we possibly doing something wrong or will this just not work?
I just added a 30MB SQL Server 2000 space for my site.
My host said that it only provides the space and nothing else. They will not be providing any means to connect to the database like Enterprise Manager 2000 or MS Client Network Utility. I'm not familiar with any of these and I looked at Microsoft's site to download it but I cannot find it.
Do you have any suggestions on how I go about setting up my hosted SQL Server? If those utilities are costly, are there cheaper/free alternatives?
I need to find out how to add roles to my SQL that is on a hosted server.I have created 2 roles, but after publishing and uploading my site, when I try and create a user, I get the error:"Exception Details: System.Configuration.Provider.ProviderException: The role 'userAtype' was not found."There are two other roles that the same happens with.Running it locally all was fine, I just didn't seem to get this info where it needs to be when I uploaded it.I'm new to messing about with SQL, so sorry if this is really elementary.I have VS2005 Standard, and the SQL Server Management Studio Express. The hosting provider I have does not allow remote connections to the DB on shared hosting, so I need to (?) generate a script to populate the DB? and run it in their browser-based Querry Window? How would I do this? Thanks.
Hi,I'm running Visual Web Developer 2005 and have created a small site with a log-in function. In VWD this automatically creates the database ASPNETDB.mdf which stores all the user / log-on data.I have 1 x MS SQL Server 2005 DB which I am using to store data for my site. Can anyone advise me on how to setup my site / the ASPNetDB so that it runs on my MS SQL Server?I've searched the ASP.NET forums etc and this does seem to be an area where people are struggling. I have tried running the ASP.NET SQL Server Registration Tool (Aspnet_regsql.exe) and get the following error:"Setup failed.Exception:An error occurred during the execution of the SQL file 'InstallCommon.sql'. The SQL error number is 8152 and the SqlException message is: String or binary data would be truncated."As a beginner I've struggled from downloading an online template, then uploading it to my site, and the log-on doesn't work. There didn't seem any instructions / advice on what to do with the ASPNETDB.mdf database.Help / advice would be much appreciated! Thanks,Tom
I've tried everything. The CreateUserWizard works fine, but then, I didn't have to connect anything for that. I've tried both SQLServer and MySQL. Connection Strings are correct, everything is correct as far as I can see. I've followed every step many many times. I'm about to go back to the old style and use VB6, because this is just stupid. The error I get is "An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)" If anyone could help me out with this I'd really appreciate it.
Folks. I just moved my domain to GoDaddy.com. When I run my website locally, everything works fine.
When I ftp it to my server space on GoDaddy.com, I get a "remote connection" error. Does anyone have an example of a connection string I should be using to connect while on the server?
We've got an mssql database hosted on our fasthosts account, however I don't have any applications to access this. When using MySQL databases I use the MySQL control centre available on the MySQL website.
Are there any similar applications available (and if possible free!) that do a similar job for mssql.
Hi, I'd like to host a small website created using VS2005 EE with a company that offers just SQL2000 DB support. My question, can i use the DB created by VS site manager as a DB to the site, if not, is there any alternatives. Thanks.
I have a SQL Server 2005 database hosted by a provider that has about 500 databases on their site. I am running Access2007 on a Windows 7 Home Premium edition.
What I am trying to do is create a new Access2007 application and attach (i.e: Link) to the SQL Server tables. I am using SQL Authentication.
I have done this before where i attached via ODBC to Oracle, but it was on the corporate network - not on a hosted server. When i try to walk thru the Access process, it does not seem to let me give it the database name. I have the connection string i use in C# (for example: Data Source, Initial Catalog, UserID and Password), how to connect with Access2007.
I am working on an ASP.NET apllication which will work with sensitve data that needs stored as encrypted. The ASP.NET application and SQL Server 2005 will be hosted outside of our company.
My questions are:
When I create a database master key, a certificate and a symetric key to encrypt and decrypt my data, will I be able to use these (master key, cert and symetric key) in other databases (say my local development SQL Server 2005 instance)? Is a managed hosting a better solution to have total control over the the keys in the database? Is there a white paper or guidance document for security in hosted databases? Thanks -Al
I am using a virtual dedicated server to host sqlexpress at a remote site. I can't get the connection from MS SQL Server Management Studio Express to connect over the Internet. I only have the box IP address (xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx) and have tried various forms of xxx.xxx.xxx.xxxsqlexpress as the server name.
Can someone point me in the right direction please?
I am pushing data to a hosted facility and I can successfully push it from BIDS but the package fails login failure when scheduled as a job. I am not sure what to use on package protection level since this data is being pushed over the internet and If I encrypt all the data with a password it will be decrypted on the hosting facility.
I have been happily using RS (SQL200) on one of our local servers for some time. However, we have SQL2000 installed on a hosted, managed remote server for some applications we provide.
We need to report on the data so the obvious decision was to get RS installed on the remote machine so I could design and deploy the necessary reports from here to RS on the hosted server.
However, for various reasons (that I do not fully understand) the default install of RS does not work on the remote server and the hsoiting company won't install it in anything other than it's default dormat. So our original plan seems to be stuffed.
What are options here? It was suggested that we could 'replicate' the hosed server data to my 'local' SQL server but that seems to have hit a brick wall too.
What would I need to do to report using the 'local' RS against the 'remote' data - is this possible?
Hi, I'm having loads of trouble trying to connect to SQL Server using management studio when the database is hosted within VMware.
Here is what I've found: 1) I can ping the Virtual machine at 192.168.10.70 2) If I open the virtual machine and use management studio locally on the machine, but use the above IP address, correct credentials, the database logs in ok. 3) If I open management studio but on my development machine and put the EXACT same credentials into the login screen of step 2, I get the dreaded error: Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed to completion of the server not responding....
Remote connections are set to allowed on the VM host machine too, so I know its not this that is the problem. The VM also hosts IIS and serves ASP pages just fine.
I would like to know whether is it possible to administer a database on a hosted site - i.e inserting some lines, executing a query. I normally access the files via ftp connection. And so far the only way I figured I can mess around with the database is to download it and change it on my desktop PC.
