Basic Sql Query Needed

Ok, I'm a beginner so forgive me for my ignorance. Could someone help
me with this?
tbl_x has two fields xid and xlist
xlist being a list of numbers.....1, 5, 6, 8
i want to create a new table from tbl_x that converts each number in
that xlist into a row in tbl_new
so for example
tbl_x has 3 rows
xid xlist
1 1, 4, 5
2 2, 3, 7
3 2, 1, 7
i need a query or sql script that will convert that table with a list
into the following....
tbl_new
id xid xlid
1 1 1
2 1 4
3 1 5
4 2 2
5 2 3
6 2 7
7 3 2
8 3 1
9 3 7

I have just started to use SQL Reporting services with asp.net but I must admit I am getting very confused !
The web server and sql server are on different boxes. When I use asp.net to access the server through a web page for database stuff it works fine. but I cannot get report viewer using serverreport to work.
I realised I had to configure reporting services on the sql box
( SQL Server machine called ABC1 and the database DB1 with a sql user and pwd )
When I go into database setup in configure report server the server appears in the drop down list and I select the database name as DB1
I then put Credentials type as SQL Server credentials and put in the user and password for DB1
When I click APPLY the SQL Server Connection dialog box appears.
If I select SQL Server as the credentials type and OK I get the error ' a connection could not be established....invalid object name sysdatabases'
If I select current user-integrated security two errors appear in the task status box
1. Current connection string is invalid and cannot be used to connect to SQL Server
2. Assigning Reporting servce rights to user - The reporting services rights were not applied properly
Can someone please help.
I looked at MSN but it all seemed quite difficult

I'm wanting to start to understand SQL Server. I've got the Beta Version of MS SQL Server 2000 and was wondering whether I could install this on my Windows Me box and start developing? Is this wise, or should i not use the Beta version? Is there a time when the Beta version "runs out"?
Are there any good basic SQL web sites out there? I know all about Access developement and i know some SQL, but i know nothing about SQL server. Which is the best site for me?

Hi all,
We are using SQL Server 2005, on Windows server 2003 R2.
We Have Two Database Servers say DBServer1 and DBServer2, Now I wants to do Replication between these to servers, such that
1. The Changes at DBServer1 should be reflected at DBServer2
2. The Changes at DBServer2 should be reflected at DBServer1
3. Changes includes Data changes and Schema Changes
4. After every Synchronization Both Databases should be Identical
I tried doing so, what i did was
I cofigured Distribution at DBServer1, also Publisher and Publication at DBServer1
and Made a Subscription at DBServer2.
What I successfully done is
If Publisher means DBServer1 do some changes then it gets updated at DBServer2.
But New Rows added at DBServer2 doesn't gets added at DBServer1

Suppose we get two following tables:

Table B:
[COURSE_ID] [varchar] (11) NOT NULL , [COURSE_NAME] [varchar] (50) NOT NULL , [COURSE_NO] [varchar] (15) NULL , [BEGIN_DATE] [datetime] NULL , [END_DATE] [datetime] NULL , [CREATER] [varchar] (11) NOT NULL ,
and during the execution of my program, I can get the current use's id (USER_ID), say U0001.
How can I retrieve the result set containing [COURSE_NAME], [COURSE_ID], but the current user's id (U0001) have Not been assigned in Table A.

I'm not getting it. The query below "e.g." is exactly as I think it should be except for the <Join Clause> as there is only the match on site name. I tried joing on the site name, but only got the sites in the log. I want all the site names even if they don't have a log item for a given date range.
I'd post my real query if it would help, it's just that I'm chopping up some strings and converting some time stamps to dates as varchar for readability for the final report, which is an MSExcel pivot table.

Make log an outer join to site.
e.g
select s.name, l.ondate from
site s
RIGHT OUTER JOIN log l ON <Join Clause> where
substring(id,3,6) in(select name from site)
and ondate between getdate()-8 and getdate()-1
You didn't seem to have any logical join between the tables, but i'm sure you have, just put this in the <Join Clause>.
Oh, and read BoL, it helps no end.....

my 7 day query....

This returns those sites that exist in the current log, however what I want is a result set that has a row for each name regardless if they are in the log.
I have 2 tables...

burtot

etc....

I am trouble getting the count of applications. In the below query MerApp.ApplicationID represents the applications. I'm trying to get a results of a count of applications for each sales team member.Before adding the COUNT() function. My query results show 3811 because it shows the sales team member numerous times because he has many applications with different IDs. For example sales team member A shows up in 75 rows because he has 75 different applications assigned to him.
SELECT (usr.FirstName + '' + usr.LastName)AS [Sales Team Member], MerApp.Assignedto, MerApp.ApplicationID, stm.UserID, MerApp.ActiveStatus

Hi I am having two very basic problems which are very frustrating.
I have read http://blogs.msdn.com/smartclientdata/archive/2005/08/26/456886.aspx and changed my DB to "Copy if newer" however when I use the connection string "|DataDirectory|MyDB.sdf" MyDB remains unchanged. (If I put the full path to MyDB in the connection string I will see the changes.) I have tried copying the DB file in the bindebug directory and opening the copy separately, and the changes still do not appear.
This leads me to my second issue. While trying to verify if the insert worked, I am trying to query the DB for the row I just inserted. I have found very little documentation describing how to do this; am I missing something/someplace obvious? Here is my code:

Just to be clear, I want to insert a row into my DB and then check that that row has been inserted by querying the DB.

Ok, I have a table that contains a number of columns, one of these columns contains a 'unitref' e.g.AC02/001D.
I import a new set of records, approx 7,000 per week in a DTS package from CSV Flat File into the table.
What I need to achieve at either the point of import of new data weekly, or once the new data is sitting in its final resting home, is a copy of the first two 2 Chars of the UnitRef, in the example above, this would make it 'AC' and then place that in a column named 'site_ref'.
Having posted the question on this forum relating to grabbing the first two chars of a value and placing them in a temporary table by utilising the Left(field,2) command in SQL (Kindly answered by CryptoKnight), I was wondering how I can do this possibly by using the inesrt into type command. I have many columns that get imported this is only a tiny step of many things that ideally would need to happen on an import,

I am having some difficulty writing a relatively basic query. The objective is to retrieve the new stories (headlines) for the past 3 days from the database. Since each headline can be assigned multiple categories (topics) the query returns a row for every headline assignment. I can't use the 'Group By' expression because one of the columns is nText.
So basically if there is an article written yesterday, "I Love Cats" that gets assigned both topics 'CATS' and 'PETS' I only it returned with the first topic assigned... 'CATS'. Here is a little image of the three tables being called:

I don't think that this query is too difficult, but I'm just getting my feet wet with writing queries that are more than select * from whatever. Any insight or recommendations are greatly appreciated.

In the tutorial Creating a Basic Package Using a Wizard > Lesson 1: Creating the Basic Package >
says to use the following sql statement on the query page:
SELECT * FROM [Customers$] WHERE NumberCarsOwned > 0
When I paste the query in I get the message :
This SQL statement is not a query.
Does anyone have any suggestions? The input and output are set up correctly and I have the sample excel file Customers.xls.
I am new to all this, is there some setting I need to change for the tutorial to work or..?
FYI I have installed Sql 2005, Sp1.

I am trying to write a query to collect information about from the tables. I need to collect all the Users who are not members of Group A in Association I.
Note that Users can belong to more than one group and have more than one profile.

Which works fine but i want to do the following with it. We produce quarterly statements.. So the user comes in jan or the begining of Feb to upload and process and order Statements from 10/31 to 12/31 the the 4 quarter data.. So Is there a way i can check if the user orders the statement in between jan and feb it has to reture PeriodId 5.
Any help will be appreciated.

my app contains one form (aspx) and it has different controls to be filled by user (textbox,radiobutton ..etc)it has one button which i want to use to pass values entered in these controls to other page and do some queries to sql server there (2nd page)Now the thing is ...my controls can have NULL values ...like user could enter just one parameter and hit button or user can fill 2 parameter and hit enter so on the other hand (2nd page) how should i query the database accordingly ....

I have some data that looks like this:
field1(pk) field2 field3

Field2 can have the same value.
What I need is to return all records where field3 is not 'D2468' ever for field2. So with the above data, I'd want the first 4 records returned, but not 5 and 6 because for those field2 is the same value and in 6, field3 is 'D2468'.
So, I can't simply say:
SELECT a.field2FROM table1 a inner join table2 b on a.field2 = b.field2 and a.field5 = b.field5where a.field3 not like 'D2468'
because it will still return record 5.
Can anyone help me with this? Thank you!

I have 2 tables:
Table1 has a field [Description](varchar) 100
Table2 has a field [IDDescription] int and field [Description] varchar(100)
In table 2 I have IDDescription store but some time also description wich is not store in table2
I need to pull all description (if it is from table2 or table1). How do I do this?

I have a query that need to do something like this.
About the data:

I have a rules table which has got all the rules, and a log table that has the logs which says whether the rules are satisfied or not over a point of time.
select rules, sum(decode(status,'pass','1')) as passed, sum(decode(status,'fail',1)) as failed from rulestable,logstable where rulestable.logid=logstable.id
My expected Output
---------------------------------
Rule1 passed= 10 failed=12
Rule2 passed=11 failed=15
But i donot have decode() function in mssql nor can I use IF ELSE here. Can anyone please tell me how this can be implemented here?

Ok guys.
Lets say i have 2 tables. One called 'Leads' and the other called 'Sales_Reps'. When a new lead comes in would like to assign it to the sales rep who has the least number of active leads. If there is a tie, I'll just assign it alphabetically between the sales reps who are tied with the least.
Can someone point me in the right direction here? I would assume I'd need to do some sort of select count, but I'm not sure how to begin.

Hi pals,
I need small help.
I have a table with data as follows.
select * from test_data
c1 c2 c3
----------------------
111 4 101
122 3 101
133 2 102
144 2 103
155 1 103
Now i need to generate a new column c4 as sequence number in the output
I need to get the output something as follows
c4 c1 c2 c3
-----------------------------
1 111 4 101
2 122 3 101
1 133 2 102
1 144 2 103
2 155 1 103
The newly generated column contains sequence numbers starting from 1 and the sequence should be resetted again to 1 whenever a new c3 value is encountered(for example when the c3 value changes from 101 to 102 the sequence should be resetted to 1).
Can anyone help me out on this regard.

consider i have these tables:

description
owner
tbl_owners

name
tbl_RequestStatus
id
description
am looking for output look like this:
OwnerName New Completed
x 2 5
y 4 3
table requests holds number of requests where each request has an owner, table owners holds the owners names, table status holds values for a request status for example : new, in progress and completed, the query am looking for should show each owner with the number of request he/she is handling grouped by the status, so we can say that owner X has 2 new requests and 5 completed requests.

hi all
i have table which has a userid,email and other fields.
And i have a text file called email.txt,this text file has userid and email values corresponding to those in the table.And this file has only this userid and email fields separated by commas..
for example
1,jwalton@uswest.net
2,jeff@hmhr.com
3,james@hotmail.com
And i need to update the emailid field in table with the emailid in this text file.
