Backup And Move

Feb 6, 2004

SQL Nubie need to accomplish two things. 1. backup an SQL2000 db on old hardware. 2. Use backup to build same SQL2000 db onto new hardware, which will replace old hardware as main system. Running Win2000 server standard edition on old server and Win2003 server standard edition on new server. Old server does not have a tape backup, but it has a cd burner and access to a Novell corparate network -without any established Windows domains. Asking for much, hope someone can help. Some source material would go along way. Thanks

Move Sql 2000 Backup To Sql 2005

Oct 18, 2007

Hi,

I have an existing sql server 2000 installation on one server. I now need to take one 2000 DB and restore it to a new sql server 2005 installation (on a different server).

What is the best way to do this. I can not upgrade the sql server 2000 installation to 2005. Basically i hoping all i need to do is backup the 2000 db and then restore it on the new sql 2005 server.

Is this possible...thanks for all help.

How To Backup/restore To Move Databases From One S

Nov 8, 2007

Ok. I dont know what I'm doing wrong but its not working...

I'm trying to move a "schema" (I guess thats the term) aka database from our webserver2 to our webserver3. I backup the .sql file, and move it over to webserver3. I tell it to restore that file and create the database if it does not exist. Part way thru i get all these errors like:

The Backup Set Holds A Backup Of A Database Other Than Existing Database. Restore Database Is Terminating Abnormally

Apr 9, 2008

I have a problem when i restore my .DAT_BAK file. I am getting error like "The backup set holds a backup of a database other than existing database. Restore Database is terminating abnormally".

I tried by using

RESTORE DATABASE <DATABASENAME>
FROM DISK = 'D:DATAMYTEST.DAT_BAK'
WITH MOVE 'VZAI_DATA' TO D:PROGRAM FILES..MSSQLTEST.MDF',
MOVE 'VZAI_LOG' TO D:PROGRAM FILES..MSSQLTEST.LDF',
REPLACE

And also i tried like

RESTORE DATABASE <DATABASENAME>
FROM DISK = 'D:DATAMYTEST.DAT_BAK'

WITH REPLACE

When i use like this,

RESTORE FILELISTONLY FROM DISK = 'D:DATAMYTEST.DAT_BAK'. I am able to get the output as LogicalName, PhysicalName, Type, FileGroupName, Size, etc.

Can i anyone please help me out?

Thanks in Advance,
Anand Rajagopal

SQL Server 2008 :: Powershell Script To Move Backup Files

Feb 11, 2015

I am trying to create a job using power-shell script to move the backup files from one folder to another. I am using Ola Hallengren script for backups. Ola hallengren created a common backup folder with sub-folders for databases and even more sub folders for Full and Log backups. My goal is to move full backups, which are older than a month and save them in a different drive along with the same folder structure. Move-Item : Cannot create a file when that file already exists.

BACKUP LOG Cannot Be Performed Because There Is No Current Database Backup. BACKUP LOG Is Terminating Abnormally.

Jan 31, 2008

Hi there

I'm getting this message on my third automated backup of the transaction logs of the day. Both databases are in full recovery mode, both successfully backed up at 01.00. The transaction logs backed up perfectly happily at 01:30 and 05:30, but failed at 09:30.

The only difference between 05:30 and 09:30's backups is that the log files were shrunk at 08:15 (the databases in question are the ones that sit under ILM2007, and keeping the log files small keeps the system running better).

Is it possible that shrinking the log files causes the database to think that there hasn't been a full database backup?

Thanks

Jane

Reload Or Recompile

Oct 30, 2000

Does someone know whether it is better to drop and reload or sp_recompile a stored procedure to get a new, recompiled execution plan? I have another DBA telling me it is better to drop and reload the stored procedure rather than use sp_recompile. I would think that sp_recompile would be the preferred method.

Parameter Reload

Jul 18, 2007

I have a problem with getting a dropdown list to change a txt field every time I select a new value on it.

I have a parameter called "Type" that is selected from a non-queried drop down list. This contains values like "Month" "Day" "Quarter" "Week", etc. I have a query that takes those parameters and then returns a "TimeInterval" for each one. I want this value to appear in a text box (Which is a MaxDate parameter for an entirely separate query) whenever the user selects a value from type. However there is a catch, the user needs to be able to also change the value of the textbox so that he/she can customize that end date for report rather than the values that I have pre-canned for them. This is a bit confusing so I'll try to give an example. The wants to run a report and selects "Week" from the drop down list, this value is passed one of my datasets and that data set returns the value 07/15/2007. That value will then populate in the MaxDate parameter field. The user then changes his/her mind selects "month" from the Type drop down list. What should happen is that the MaxDate field changes to be 07/01/2007 (This is returned correctly in my querry, but I can't get it to show in the maxDate field after the first time.), but instead it still shows 07/15/2007. Here is my SQL code for the dataSet that uses the parameter Type to return a date

IF(@Type= 'Day')
BEGIN
SELECT dbo.F_START_OF_DAY(getdate()) AS TimeInterval
END

IF(@Type='Year')
BEGIN
SELECT dbo.F_START_OF_YEAR(getdate()) AS TimeInterval
END

IF(@Type='Month')
BEGIN
SELECT dbo.F_START_OF_MONTH(getdate()) AS TimeInterval
END

IF(@Type='Quarter')
BEGIN
SELECT dbo.F_START_OF_QUARTER(getdate()) AS TimeInterval
END

ETC....................................

If you need any aditional information or have any questions, I'de be more than happy to answer them. Thanks in advance, /jcarver

Empty Data Tables And Reload

May 6, 2015

I would like to empty out my 2k8 database (remove all the data in the tables only) And reloaded it with the data from production (2k5). I know I would have to dis-enable any constraints, triggers and remove all indexes before I can run a Truncate/Delete on all tables correct And then import the data via Wizard or script And lastly enable all the constraints & triggers, rebuild the indexes. Is this the only way to go about this? I don't want to do a backup & restore because the 2k5 doesn't have a 20% of the tables that are in 2k8. The 20% of those tables in 2k8 i'm not going to remove.

Question About Move Large Amount Of Data From Database To Database

Apr 23, 2007

guys,I have a project need to move more than 100,000 records from onedatabase table to another database table every week. Currently, usersinput date range from web UI, my store procedure will take those dateranges to INSERT records to a table in another database, then deletethe records, but it will take really long time to finish this action(up to 1 or 2 hours). My question is if there is some other way I should do to speed up theaction, I am thinking about use bcp to copy those records to datafileand then use bcp to insert it into SQL Server table. Is this the rightway to do it or should I consider other solution (then, what is thesolution.)Thanks a lot!

Move Database

Jul 18, 2006

I’m working with an msde database on my local machine, but need to take that database and move it to my remote host. This is problematic because I can not just do a back up and restore.
I was wondering if there were any asp.net applications that would generate lots of sql statements to reproduce the database on my remote host.
I had built a program to back up all the tables in that way, but, forgot that the membership stuff uses stored procedures, and I don't not know how to modify my program in order to back those up too.
Any help will be much appreciated, thank you very much for reading my post

How To Move My Database

If you want to move all the databases to new server. Stop the SQL server service on existing server. Copy mdf and ldf files of all databases to same location iin new server. Also take the backup of master and msdb database from existing server. Then restore master and msdb on new server.

"

My question is how to move my database to a DIFFEREN LOCATION on a different server. My two servers are different file layout (not my choice though.)

Thanks a lot in advance.

P.S. Should I use the DTS at all to perform this task?

Database Move From SQL 6.5 To SQL 7.0

Jul 21, 2000

Hi:

I need your suggestion or experience about how to move a database from SQL 6.5 to SQL 7.0. The server where SQL 6.5 resides locates in different network than SQL 7.0. DTS does not work for the database move because of two server can not talk directly.

We need to do this task very soon in production environment. I tried to backup database to a disk (backup device in SQL 6.5) but I failed to restore it in SQL 7.0 because the backup file was not detected by restore utility in SQL 7.0.

Please tell me what I should do. Besides BCP, are there any other methods to move the database from SQL 6.5 to SQL 7.0 in diffferent networks.

Thank you very much.

Database Move

Sep 5, 2007

I have a web project in VS.NET 2005 on my development computer that uses an ASP.NET database (ASPNETDB.MDF) to manage user roles. Now I would like to move that database to a test computer with IIS. After copying the web project and database I am able to read from it but when I try to update I get the following error:
Failed to update database "C:INETPUBWWWROOTMyWebAppAPP_DATAASPNETDB.MDF" because the database is read-only.

I think this is because the user 'Network Service' that IIS uses does not have access to the database. So how do I give 'Network Service' access to the database using SQL commands?

Move A Database

Jan 25, 2008

I'm trying to move a database created on SQL Server 2005 Express Edition to the SQL 2000 Server (that's the version the company uses). I understand that this is done by making a script that, when executed, creates an exact copy of the database structure on the target server as well as copying the stored procedures.
After that I somehow need to export the data from SQL Server 2005 Express to SQL Server 2000. How can I do that. There's no export function in Management Studio Express.

How Do I Move My Database?

Jul 31, 2006

I am using VWD 2005 Express, with SQL 2005 Express. My web hosting company supports ASP 2.0 and SQL Server 2005, but have put SQL on a database server, which is separate from the application server. I successfully published a "Hello world" test application, but my database application failed after displaying the logon page, presumably when it first tried to connect to the database.

VWD has created my database within the application folder (appApp_DataASPNETDB.MDF) and created the configuration string in web.config: -

<add name="ConnectionString" connectionString="Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|ASPNETDB.MDF;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />

This all works fine on my local development server, but naturally fails when the application is copied to the web host, and the database can no longer be run from an application sub-folder. With SQL 2000 the problem would have been simple to fix. I would have created a database in the host DB server. I would then have backed up the development database, and restored it into the target database. I would then have changed the connect string, and all would have been OK.

How do I get the development database into the target database with SQL 2005 express? I can't use backup/restore, since there is no backup within VWD 2005 Express, and although there is a backup within Management Studio Express (MSE) I would need to get the database into MSE first. I tried opening the MDF file, but MSE wouldn't recognise this. I can't find any way of exporting the database - the equivalent of SQL 2000's DTS is not available within MSE!!!!!!!!! I tried installing an eval. version of the full Management Studio, but the install failed because "there is no upgrade path".

Once all that's sorted (if it can be sorted - I may have to go back to SQL 2000), where can I find out what to write in the configuration string?

Thank you, Robert Barnes
