I am a network security professional rather than a MS SQL admin, so I
apologize in advance if this is a bit of a basic question for this
list. I also cross-posted this to microsoft.public.sqlserver.server,
so sorry if anyone's read it already.
I know an admin setting up a SQL server that will only be
accesible by a webserver running on the same host (not happy about
running private vs publicly avaialable services on the same host , but
it's what we've got). As such, I'd like to recommend to him that the
SQL server only listen on the localhost ip, 127.0.0.1, thereby making
it inaccesible to the outside world. I looked around the MS
knowledgebase but couldn't find a clear document stating how to do
this. Is it even possible? Is there a better option for this
configuration?
It's been suggested that firewalling is the only option, but I'd really
like to do *both* (firewall & bind to localhost). The firewall in this
case will have to be host-based instead (software) instead of hardware
for non-technical reasons, so additionally if anyone recommends a
software firewall they use for this purpose I'd appreciate it. My firs
impulse is to recommend Tiny, but I've never used a software firewall
for an MS SQL/Web server before.

The problem will show up again after I restart my computer and trying to load my project from localhost at the first time. How do I make my ASP.net project to load very fast with just 1 second or less at the first time from localhost?

I am trying to connect to my local SQL server 2005 from "Server Explorer" but it is giving the error of "Remote Connectons" not allowed.
I am using "windows authentication" login.
My SQLExpress and SQLExpress browser are running from "SQL server configuration manager".
If i use a "App.Config" file to connect to database, the SQl connection can open and i can run the stored procedure.... but cannot access the database on my local machine.

Logged in under a login id that is a db_owner on a database, I can not bind a rule owned by dbo to a table owned by dbo. Following does not work: EXEC sp_bindrule 'dbo.rule1', 'table1.column1' error:You do not own a table named 'table1' that has a column named 'column1'.
Following does not work: EXEC sp_bindrule 'dbo.rule1', 'dbo.table1.column1' error: Rule, table and user datatype must be in current database
To bind the rule, I had to change table ownership to my login id and then bind the rule. I then changed table ownership back to dbo. This method seems odd. I do not have this problem when binding defaults to dbo owned tables.
I have set up a locahost site in IIS using the "Configure Web Synchronization Wizard". One of the first test I was asked to do was to open a broweser and browse to http://localhost/MobileTest/sqlcesa30.dll
If all is well I should get a web page with the following line:
SQL Server Mobile Server Agent 3.0
But unfortunately I get an error stating : "The server has encountered an error while loading an application during the processing of your request. Please refer to the event log for more detail information. Please contact the server administrator for assistance."
I checekd the Event log and found this error related the IIS launch process on my machine.
DCOM got error "Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password. " and was unable to logon .IWAM_Rataq in order to run the server:
where Rataq is the name of my machine. Could my IWAM_Rataq account be corrupted, my other sites on the machine work.
Infact if i put in a Test.htm page in the virtual directory MobileTest I am able to browse to the page.
Can the Account be re-set? is there another problem that I am not aware of. I have Norton Internet 2006 running could that be the reason? Could Norton be blocking the dll from loading? But the event log states it is a Account error.
Any ideas why this might occur? any help is always appreciated
I got through the installation hoops for SQLEXPRESS Reporting Services in Vista and set up the default configurations in Report Services Configuration. I can explore the default directory for "Reports" in IIS7, but I can't browse in IE. I get the "The report server is not responding. verify that the report server..." message in the browser. This is after I migrated the app per the initial http 500 error using the preferred method - %systemroot%system32inetservAPPCMD.exe migrate config "Default Web Site/Reports".
I'm running Vista Ultimate, VS2005, SQLEXPRESS SP2. I've tried running IE as admin and also I've disabled UAC from gpedit.msc - ...Windows SettingsSecurity SettingsLocal PolicySecurity Options and unchecking UAC.
when i do a snapshot i have it set up to truncate before inserting. As a result I'm getting an error saying that it cant truncate a table reference in an indexed view. What settings should i use to allow for a snapshot in this instance? Should i manually drop the databinding then snap then recreate the databinding? there has to be a better way

Hi ,Have a Visual C++ app that use odbc to access sql server database.Doing a select to get value of binary field and bind a char to thatfield as follows , field in database in binary(16)char lpResourceID[32+1];rc = SQLBindCol(hstmt, 1, SQL_C_CHAR,&lpResourceID,RESOURCE_ID_LEN_PLUS_NULL , &nLen1);and this works fine , however trying to move codebase to UNICODE antested the followingWCHAR lpResourceID[32+1];rc = SQLBindCol(hstmt, 1, SQL_W_CHAR,&lpResourceID,RESOURCE_ID_LEN_PLUS_NULL , &nLen1);but only returns 1/2 the data .Any ideas , thoughts this would work fine , nit sure why loosing dataAll ideas welcome.JOhn
Is there a way to connect to an MS SQL DB locally with VBScript... I have seen code blocks use the keywork localhost... does that have something to do with it?
Sorry if this have been done before, does anyone know why I cannot connect to query analyzer using localhost? If I use my computer name, it would be fine. But not localhost. I think it might be something to do with protocols or security settings??
I got a Sql Server running on my pc machine. I can access it as a localhost just fine. Its on a network and now I can't access it on other computers. When the odbc asks for the ip of the sql server is that in the normal ip format or the 9.0.1399 number that is next to the name of the server.
I am trying to deploy a project to localhost, but I get the following error. I have only one package in this project.
"Could not save the package "C:......lah.dtsx" to SQL Server "localhost".
I tried deploying other projects that I've successfully deployed before and those also fail with the same message. Am I missing something really basic here?
After creating a WebService using SQL Server 2005 HTTP Endpoints I can only browse to the wsdl file using localhost address and not via the machine name
For example http://MACHINENAME/SomeWebService?wsdl will ask for some authentication that can never be determined while
http://localhost/SomeWebService?wsdl will successfully generate the WSDL file
This happens on the actual machine and on all other machines in the domain which pretty much defeats the purpose of using Web Services to expose functionality.
Does anyone have any idea regarding
(a) what security features are at work here, (b) Where are they documented (c) How to set or use them in such a manner as to actually be able to use web services.
While investigating I have noticed that all examples conveniently use localhost and so either avoid or never address this issue.
Hi there, I am using VWD and have my production website hosted elsewhere. The hosting company provides a backup service that allows me to download a something.bak file as the backup of my website. My query is: how to export or copy the data in the something.bak file into the database on my own computer? Can anyone helps please? Thanks in advance.

I found the 2 way to connect to database, in first one it uses Localhost but in another it uses Local. Please tell me which is the better way and what is the difrence between both?
Hi, I used Microsoft SQL server 2000 on Microsoft Windows Server 2003 for database server and used Redhat Linux Enterprise for Web server.
I wrote the PHP script (on Redhat) connect to database server, its does not work. And then I install freetds on Web server but not work too.
I have problem not be solve... - on Redhat, cannot telnet x.x.x.x 1433 to database server. But telnet to other port is success. - on database server, cannot telnet x.x.x.x 1433 and telnet 127.0.0.1 1433. - between web server and database server can used ping ! - I used command 'netstat -an' on database server is not show for 1433 port.
I am struggling to set a SQL Server Express for remote access...
Since it is the only instance on this server, I have set it up to use port 1433 by amending the IPALL entry of the Server Network Configuration, TCP/IP Properties.
I have also disabled "Shared Memory" and "Named Pipes" to leave only TCP/IP enabled as a server network config. I have stopped the Browser Service because I think I don't need it if I use port 1433.
From the server itself, I can connect to my SQL Server through "localhostSQLEXPRESS" or "servernameSQLEXPRESS" but not from "10.xxx.xxx.xxxSQLEXPRESS" or "127.0.0.1SQLEXPRESS"
I suppose until I can access my server from itself using the IPAddress, there is no chance connecting remotely...
I'm taking a .NET class and I have SQL Server 2005 installed on mymachine. When I go into Studio and then select Server Explorer and tryto add a new Connection, it seems to bomb out when I type in'localhost' for the server name. It doesn't come back with anythingfor the DBS. Is there something I need to do to get my machine tounderstand 'localhost'?
Hi. Does anybody know why I'm getting the following error when I go to http://localhost/reportserver in a browser? is there a problem with how to setup permission or Windows Vista?

http://localhost/reportserver allows me to get to the reports, but there used to be another way I did it. I thought it was http://localhost/reports, which gave me a nicer looking page and put icons that says "new" on the new reports.
